Spinel oxides are recognized as promising Fenton-like catalysts for the degradation of antibiotics. However, the catalytic performance is restrained by the poor electron transfer rate (ETR). Herein, hollow NiCo2O4@C nanocages are rationally designed and prepared to accelerate ETR in peroxymonosulfate (PMS) activation for tetracycline (TC) degradation.

Force tests on a 0.0035-scale model of the General Dynamics/Convair aerospace space shuttle B-15B-1 booster were conducted in the MSFC trisonic wind tunnel. The configuration has a low delta wing, all-movable delta-planform canard controls, and a single vertical tail. The test was devoted to investigating the effects of various configuration variables upon lateral-directional characteristics. These variables included wing dihedral, rudder flare, and body flap deflection. Yaw runs were made at angles of attack of 6, 10, 15, 25, 30, and 35 degrees. The Mach number range for this test was 1.20 to 4.96.

Wind tunnel stability tests of space shuttle model at subsonic to hypersonic speeds

The transonic phase of the 0.0088105-scale MSC orbiter booster separation test was conducted in the LTV 4-foot high speed wind tunnel, at Mach numbers of 0.6,0.9, 1.1, and 1.38. The purpose of this test was to define the effects of the orbiter/ booster proximity interference on the aerodynamic characteristics of the launch configuration during separation or abort maneuvers. Each model had both straight and delta wings available for variation of launch vehicle configuration concepts.

Water's viscosity dependence on pressure was also not affected by O-GNFs, except at 10 ppm, where the shuttle effect may have increased the presence of hydrophobic methane bubbles in the solution. Under high pressure, the relative viscosity of the system remained non-Einsteinian at all temperatures except 2C. This may have been because the density anomaly of water was shifted to a colder temperature as the hydrogen bonding network was weaker. The phase transition from liquid to hydrate was identical to that of pure water, indicating that the presence of different stages of growth was not affected by the presence of O-GNF. However, the times to reach a maximum viscosity were faster in O-GNF systems compared to pure water. This said, the hydrate formation limitations inherent to the measurement system were not overcome by the presence of O-GNFs. The times to application-relevant viscosity values were maximized in the 1 ppm system at 49.75 % (200 mPa.s) and 31.93 % (500 mPa.s) faster than the baseline. Therefore, the presence of O-GNFs allowed for shorter times to desired viscosities and at lower driving forces than the baseline, improving the viability of the hydrate technologies to which they can be added.

Lithium--sulfur (Li/S) batteries are regarded as one of the most promising energy storage devices beyond lithium-ion batteries because of their high energy density of 2600 Wh/kg and an affordable cost of sulfur. Meanwhile, some challenges inherent to Li/S batteries remain to be tackled, for instance, the polysulfide (PS) shuttle effect, the irreversible solidification of Li$_2$S, and the volume expansion of the cathode material during discharge. On the molecular level, these issues originate from the structural and solubility behavior of the PS species in bulk and in the electrode confinement. In this study, we use classical molecular dynamics (MD) simulations to develop a working model for PS of different chain lengths in applied electrolyte solutions of lithium bistriflimide (LiTFSI) in 1,2-dimethoxyethane (DME) and 1,3-dioxolane (DOL) mixtures. We investigate conductivities, diffusion coefficients, solvation structures, and clustering behavior and verify our simulation model with experimental measurements available in literature and newly performed by us. Our results show that diffusion coefficients and conductivities are significantly influenced by the chain length of PS. The conductivity contribution of the short chains, like Li$_2$S$_4$, is lower than of longer PS chains, such as Li$_2$S$_6$ or Li$_2$S$_8$, despite the fact that the diffusion coefficient of Li$_2$S$_4$ is higher than for longer PS chains. The low conductivity of Li$_2$S$_4$ can be attributed to its low degree of dissociation and even to a formation of large clusters in the solution. It is also found that an addition of 1 M LiTFSI into PS solutions considerably reduces the clustering behavior. The practical applications of lithium selenium (Li-Se) batteries are impeded primarily due to the dissolution and migration of higher order polyselenides (Li2Sen) into the electrolyte (known as shuttle effect) and inactive deposition of lower order polyselenides. The high electrical conductivity and mechanical strengths of MXenes make them a suitable candidate to provide adequate anchoring to prevent polyselenides dissolution and improved electrochemical performance. Herein, we used density functional theory (DFT) calculations to understand the binding mechanism of Li2Sen on graphene and surface functionalized Ti3C2 MXenes. We used graphene as reference material to assess Li2Sen binding strengths on functionalized Ti3C2X2 (where X = S, O, F, and Cl). We observed that Ti3C2S2 and Ti3C2O2 exhibit superior anchoring behavior compared to graphene, Ti3C2F2, and Ti3C2Cl2. The calculated Li2Sen adsorption strength provided by S and O terminated Ti3C2 are stronger than the commonly used ether-based electrolyte, which is a requisite for effective suppression of the Li2Sen shuttling. The adsorbed Li2Sen on Ti3C2X2 and graphene retains their structural integrity without a chemical decomposition. The density of states (DOS) analysis exhibits that the conductive behavior of the Ti3C2X2 is preserved even after Li2Sen adsorption, which can stimulate the electrochemical activity of involved Li2Sen chemistry. Based on our unprecedented results, Ti3C2S2 and Ti3C2O2 are found to exhibit superior anchoring behavior for Li2Sen adsorption, which can be leveraged for designing effective selenium-based cathode materials to boost the electrochemical performance of the Li-Se battery system

Previous calculations by five different modeling groups of the effect of space shuttle operations on the ozone layer yielded an estimate of 0.2 percent ozone reduction for the Northern Hemisphere at 60 launches per year. Since these calculations were made, the accepted rate constant for the reaction between hydroperoxyl and nitric oxide to yield hydroxyl and nitrogen dioxide, HO2 + NO yields OH + NO2, was revised upward by more than an order of magnitude, with a resultant increase in the predicted ozone reduction for chlorofluoromethanes by a factor of approximately 2. New calculations of the shuttle effect were made with use of the new rate constant data, again by five different modeling groups. The new value of the shuttle effect on the ozone layer was found to be 0.25 percent. The increase resulting from the revised rate constant is considerably less for space shuttle operations than for chlorofluoromethane production, because the new rate constant also increases the calculated rate of downward transport of shuttle exhaust products out of the stratosphere.
