As humanity pushes the boundaries of space exploration, human factors research becomes more important. Human factors encompass a broad spectrum of psychological, physiological, and ergonomic factors that affect human performance, well-being, and safety in the unique and challenging space environment. This panel explores the multifaceted field of human factors in space exploration and highlights the opportunities that lie in fostering international and interdisciplinary cooperation. This exploration delves into the current state of research on human factors in space missions, addressing the physiological and psychological challenges astronauts face during long space flights. At first glance, the ruins of the Roman Theatre in the Italian town of Volterra have little in common with cassette tapes containing Atari games. One is certainly considered an important historical landmark, while the consensus on the importance of the other is partial at best. Still, both are remnants of times vastly different from the present and are at risk of oblivion. Unearthed architectural structures are exposed to the elements just as the deteriorating signals stored on magnetic tapes. However, the rate of deterioration is much faster with the magnetic media, as their life expectancy is counted in decades, whereas the Roman Theater, which is already in ruin, measures its lifespan in centuries. Hence, both would benefit from some form of digital preservation and reconstruction. Despite the decades-long history of 3D printing, it is not used to its full potential. Yet 3D printing holds promise for isolated communities, aiming for self-sufficiency. In this experiential study conducted in an analog space habitat we evaluated challenges and opportunities of using 3D printing. Our study revealed barriers such as: 1) setting up and maintaining the 3D printing equipment while minding different kinds of pollution, that is air, temperature and sound, 2) design skill and familiarity with specialized software as well as materials and 3) the awareness of what can be achieved to meet community needs. We observed that in-community experience and know-how are reliable sources of 3D print ideas, that improve quality of life of community members if they are encouraged and supported by participatory design. A Round Robin study has been carried out to estimate the impact of the human element in small-angle scattering data analysis. Four corrected datasets were provided to participants ready for analysis. All datasets were measured on samples containing spherical scatterers, with two datasets in dilute dispersions, and two from powders. Most of the 46 participants correctly identified the number of populations in the dilute dispersions, with half of the population mean entries within 1.5% and half of the population width entries within 40%, respectively. Due to the added complexity of the structure factor, much fewer people submitted answers on the powder datasets. For those that did, half of the entries for the means and widths were within 44% and 86% respectively. To understand and begin to address the challenge of air pollution in Europe we conducted participatory research, art and design activities with the residents of one of the areas most affected by smog in Poland. The participatory research events, described in detail in this article, centered around the theme of ecology and served to design an application that would allow us to conduct field research on pro-environmental behaviours at a larger scale. As a result we developed a research application, rooted in local culture and history and place attachment, which makes use of gamification techniques. The application gathers air quality data from the densest network of air pollution sensors in Europe, thereby aligning the visible signs of pollution in the app with the local sensor data. At the same time it reinforces the users' pro-environmental habits and exposes them to educational messages about air quality and the environment. The data gathered with this application will validate the efficacy of this kind of an intervention in addressing residents' smog-causing behaviours.

Metal nanoparticles have a substantial impact across different fields of science, such as photochemistry, energy conversion, and medicine. Among the commonly used nanoparticles, silver nanoparticles are of special interest due to their antibacterial properties and applications in sensing and catalysis. However, many of the methods used to synthesize silver nanoparticles often do not result in well-defined products, the main obstacles being high polydispersity or a lack of particle size tunability. We describe an automated approach to on-demand synthesis of adjustable particles with mean radii of 3 and 5 nm using the polyol route. The polyol process is a promising route for silver nanoparticles e.g., to be used as reference materials. Industrial and agricultural waste streams, which contain high concentrations of NH4+, PO43- and transition metals are environmentally harmful and toxic pollutants. At the same time phosphorous and transition metals constitute highly valuable resources. Typically, separate pathways have been considered to extract hazardous transition metals or phosphate, independently from each other. Investigations on the simultaneous removal of multiple components have been studied only to a limited extent. Here, we report the synthesis routes for Co- and Ni-struvites (NH4MPO4.6H2O, M = Ni2+, Co2+ ), which allow for P, ammonia and metal co precipitation. By evaluating different reaction parameters, the phase and stability of transition metal struvites, as well as their crystal morphologies, and sizes could be optimized. Ni-struvite is stable in a wide reactant concentration range and at different metal/phosphorus (M/P) ratios, whereas Co-struvite only forms at low M/P ratios. Detailed investigations of the precipitation process using ex situ and in situ techniques provided insights into the crystallization mechanisms/crystal engineering of these materials. M-struvites crystallize via intermediate colloidal nanophases, which subsequently aggregate and condense to final crystals after extended reaction times. However, the exact reaction kinetics of the formation of a final crystalline product varies significantly depending on the metal cation involved in the precipitation process: several seconds (Mg) to minutes (Ni) to hours (Co). The achieved level of control over the morphology and size, makes precipitation of metal struvites a promising method for direct metal recovery and binding them in the form of valuable phosphate raw materials. In recent years, we have come to appreciate the astounding intricacy of the formation process of minerals from ions in aqueous solutions. In this context, a number of studies have revealed that nucleation in the calcium sulfate system is non-classical, involving the aggregation and reorganization of nanosized prenucleation particles. In a recent work we have shown that this particle-mediated nucleation pathway is actually imprinted in the resultant single micron-sized CaSO4 crystals. This property of CaSO4 minerals provides us with an unique opportunity to search for evidence of non-classical nucleation pathways in geological environments. In particular, we focused on the quintessential single crystals of anhydrite extracted from the Naica mine in Mexico. We elucidated the growth history from this mineral sample by mapping growth defects at different length scales. Based on these data we argue that the nano-scale misalignment of the structural sub-units observed in the initial calcium sulfate crystal seed propagate through different length-scales both in morphological, as well as strictly crystallographic aspects, eventually causing the formation of large mesostructured single crystals of anhydrite. Hence, the nanoparticle mediated nucleation mechanism introduces a 'seed of imperfection', which leads to a macroscopic single crystal, in which its fragments do not fit together at different length-scales in a self-similar manner. Consequently, anisotropic voids of various sizes are formed with very well-defined walls/edges. But, at the same time the material retains its essential single crystal nature. CaSO4 minerals (i.e. gypsum, anhydrite and bassanite) are widespread in natural and industrial environments. During the last several years, a number of studies have revealed that nucleation in the CaSO4-H2O system is non-classical, where the formation of crystalline phases involves several steps. Based on these recent insights we have formulated a tentative general model for calcium sulfate precipitation from solution. This model involves primary species that are formed through the assembly of multiple Ca2+ and SO42- ions into nanoclusters. These nanoclusters assemble into poorly ordered (i.e. amorphous) hydrated aggregates, which in turn undergo ordering into coherent crystalline units. The thermodynamic (meta)stability of any of the three CaSO4 phases is regulated by temperature, pressure and ionic strength with gypsum being the stable form at low temperatures and low to medium ionic strengths, and anhydrite the stable phase at high temperatures and lower temperature at high salinities. Bassanite is metastable across the entire phase diagram but readily forms as the primary phase at high ionic strengths across a wide range of temperatures, and can persist up to several months. Although the physicochemical conditions leading to bassanite formation in aqueous systems are relatively well established, nanoscale insights into the nucleation mechanisms and pathways are still lacking. To fill this gap, and to further improve our general model for calcium sulfate precipitation, we have conducted in situ scattering measurements at small- and wide-angles (SAXS/WAXS) and complemented these with in situ Raman spectroscopic characterization. Although clays are crucial mineral phases in Earth's weathering engine, it is unclear how they form in surface environments under (near-)ambient pressures and temperature. Most synthesis routes, attempting to give insights into the plausible mechanisms, rely on hydrothermal conditions, yet many geological studies showed that clays may actually form at moderate temperatures (< 100 deg. C) in most terrestrial settings. Here, we present the mechanism of the low-temperature (25-95 deg. C) crystallization of a synthetic Mg-clay, saponite. We describe the pathway at the various sub-stages of the reaction, as we derived from high-energy X-ray diffraction, infrared spectroscopy and transmission electron microscopy data. Our results reveal that saponite crystallizes via a two stage process: 1) a rapid (several minutes) co-precipitation where ~20% of the available magnesium becomes incorporated into an aluminosilicate network followed by 2) a much slower crystallization mechanism (many hours to days) where the remaining magnesium becomes gradually incorporated into the growing saponite sheet structure., Comment: manuscript + supporting information

Understanding the gypsum (CaSO4.2H2O) formation pathway from aqueous solution has been the subject of intensive research in the past years. This interest stems from the fact that gypsum appears to fall into a broader category of crystalline materials whose formation does not follow classical nucleation and growth theories. The pathways involve transitory precursor cluster species, yet the actual structural properties of such clusters are not very well understood. Here, we show how in situ high-energy X-ray diffraction experiments and molecular dynamics (MD) simulations can be combined to derive the structure of small CaSO4 clusters, which are precursors of crystalline gypsum. We fitted several plausible structures to the derived pair distribution functions and explored their dynamic properties using unbiased MD simulations based on both rigid ion and polarizable force fields. Calcium sulfate minerals are found under the form of three crystalline phases: gypsum (CaSO4.2H2O), bassanite (CaSO4.0.5H2O), and anhydrite (CaSO4). Due to its relevance in natural and industrial processes, the formation pathways of these calcium sulphate phases from aqueous solution have been the subject of intensive research. There is a growing body of literature, that calcium sulfate forms essentially through a non-classical nanoparticle- or cluster-mediated crystallisation process. At the early stages of precipitation calcium sulfate crystals grow through the reorganization and coalescence of aggregates rather than through classical unit addition. Here, we show by using low-dose dark field (DF) transmission electron microscopy (TEM) and electron diffraction, that these re-structuring processes by no means continue until a near-perfectly homogeneous single crystal is obtained. Instead the growth process yields a final imperfect mesocrystal of the overall morphology resembling that of a single crystal, yet composed of smaller nano-domains. Hence, our data indicate that organic-free mesocrystal grown by a particle mediated-pathway may preserve a 'memory or 'imprint' of the non-classical growth process in the final crystal structure, something that has been largely overlooked until now. A quantitative understanding of aggregation mechanisms leading to the formation of inorganic nanoparticles (NPs) and protein composites in aqueous media is of paramount interest for colloid chemistry. In particular, the interactions between silica (SiO2) NPs and lysozyme (LZM) have attracted attention, because LZM is well-known to adsorb strongly to silica NPs, while at the same time preserving its enzymatic activity. The inherent nature of the aggregation processes leading to NP-LZM composites involves structural changes at length-scales from few to hundreds of nanometres but also time scales << 1 second. To unravel these we used in situ synchrotron-based small-angle X-ray scattering (SAXS) and followed the subtle interparticle interactions in solution at a time resolution of 50 ms/frame (20 fps). We show that if the size of silica NPs (~5 nm diameter) is matched by the dimensions of LZM, the evolving scattering patterns contain a unique structure factor contribution originating from the presence of LZM. Can we control the crystallization of solid CaCO3 from supersaturated aqueous solutions and thus mimic a natural process predicted to occur in living organisms that produce biominerals? Here we show how we achieved this by confining the reaction between Ca2+ and CO32- ions to the environment of nanosized water cores of water-in-oil microemulsions. Using a combination of in situ small-angle X-ray scattering, high-energy X-ray diffraction, and low-dose liquid-cell scanning transmission electron microscopy, we elucidate how the presence of micellar interfaces leads to the formation of a solute CaCO3 phase that can be stabilized for extended periods of time inside micellar water nano-droplets. The formation of crystalline calcium sulfate (CaSO4*xH2O) polymorphs from aqueous solutions is assumed to occur via a single-step process following the classical nucleation paradigm. However, although recent research contradicts this classical picture and indicates that CaSO4*2H2O forms at room temperature through multiple steps at different length and time-scales, these steps have so far not been quantified. By using in situ and fast time-resolved small angle X-ray scattering (SAXS), we demonstrate that the nucleation and growth of CaSO4*2H2O involves at the very initial stages the formation of well-defined, primary species of < 3 nm in length (stage I). Stage II of the reaction is characterized by the arrangement of these primary species into domains, while in stage III these domains condense into larger aggregates. Based on volume fractions and electron density considerations we propose that the fast forming primary species from supersaturated aqueous CaSO4 solutions are composed of anhydrous Ca-SO4-cores. The first three stages of nucleation and aggregation of the primary species are followed by a final stage (stage IV), where the primary species grow within the aggregates, and eventually transform into gypsum (CaSO4*2H2O). This final stage was also confirmed through simultaneously collected wide-angle scattering (diffraction, WAXS) data, which clearly show the growth of gypsum during stage IV only.
