This work introduces an approach to compute periodic phase diagram of micromagnetic systems by solving a periodic linearized Landau-Lifshitz-Gilbert (LLG) equation using an eigenvalue solver with the Finite Element Method formalism. The linear operator in the eigenvalue problem is defined as a function of the periodic phase shift wave vector. The dispersion diagrams are obtained by solving the eigenvalue problem for complex eigen frequencies and corresponding eigen states for a range of prescribed wave vectors. The presented approach incorporates a calculation of the periodic effective field, including the exchange and magnetostatic field components. The approach is general in that it allows handling 3D problems with any 1D, 2D, and 3D periodicities. The ability to calculated periodic diagrams provides insights into the spin wave propagation and localized resonances in complex micromagnetic structures.

Periodic micromagnetic finite element method (PM-FEM) is introduced to solve periodic unit cell problems using the Landau-Lifshitz-Gilbert equation. PM-FEM is applicable to general problems with 1D, 2D, and 3D periodicities. PM-FEM is based on a non-periodic FEM-based micromagnetic solver and extends it in several aspects to account for periodicities, including the computation of exchange and magnetostatic fields. For the exchange field, PM-FEM modifies the sparse matrix construction for computing the Laplace operator to include additional elements arising due to the periodicities. For the magnetostatic field, the periodic extensions include modifications in the local operators, such as gradient, divergence, and surface magnetic charges as well as the long-range superposition operator for computing the periodic scalar potential. The local operators are extended to account for the periodicities similar to handling the Laplace operator. For the long-range superposition operator, PM-FEM utilizes a periodic Green's function (PGF) and fast spatial convolutions. The PGF is computed rapidly via exponentially rapidly convergent sums. The spatial convolutions are accomplished via a modified fast Fourier transform based adaptive integral method that allows calculating spatial convolutions with non-uniform meshes in $O(N\log N)$ numerical operations. PM-FEM is implemented on CPU and GPU based computer architectures. PM-FEM allows efficiently handling cases of structures contained withing the periodic unit cell touching or not touching its boundaries as well as structures that protrude beyond the unit cell boundaries. PM-FEM is demonstrated to have about the same or even higher performance than its parent non-periodic code. The demonstrated numerical examples show the efficiency of PM-FEM for highly complex structures with 1D, 2D, and 3D periodicities.

Synchronization of coupled oscillators is a fundamental phenomenon that has been observed in many natural and engineered systems, ranging from biological cells to electronic circuits. In recent years, spin torque nano-oscillators (STNOs) have emerged as a promising platform for a variety of applications in nanoscale systems such as neuromorphic computing, due to their compact size, low power consumption, and tunable properties. However, achieving synchronization in a large array of STNOs remains a challenge, for the complexity of the interactions between the oscillators. To address this challenge, we report on the achievement of synchronization across a 2D array of STNOs. We designed a honeycomb model that created a network of interactions among the oscillators that only involved nearest neighbors. Using micromagnetic simulations, we demonstrated the effectiveness of our design and observed that global synchronization across the whole array. Such global synchronization can also be tuned by enable/disenable next-nearest neighbor interactions. We also found that our design enables synchronization at room temperature, which is crucial for practical applications. Our work contributes to the growing body of research on the synchronization of coupled oscillators in spintronics and could pave the way for the development of new types of spintronic devices and potential applications.

Coherent X-ray Diffraction Imaging (CXDI) technique offers unique insights into the nanoscale world, enabling the reconstruction of 3D structures with a nanoscale resolution achieved through computational phase reconstruction from measured scattered intensity maps. Computational demands of 3D CXDI, however, limit its real-time application in experimental settings. This work presents a carousel phase retrieval algorithm (CPRA) that enables the real-time, high-resolution reconstruction of computationally complex 3D objects. CPRA is based on representing the 3D reconstruction problem as a set of 2D reconstructions of projected images corresponding to different experimentally collected angles via the Fourier slice theorem. Consistency between the 2D reconstructed images is based on an iterative procedure, in which each 2D reconstruction accounts for the adjacent 2D reconstructed images in a periodic (carousel) manner. Demonstrations on complex systems, including a lithium-rich layered oxide particle and a Staphylococcus aureus biological cell, demonstrate that CPRA significantly enhances the reconstruction quality and enables the reconstruction process to be completed in real time during experiment.

We propose a Fast Fourier Transform based Periodic Interpolation Method (FFT-PIM), a flexible and computationally efficient approach for computing the scalar potential given by a superposition sum in a unit cell of an infinitely periodic array. Under the same umbrella, FFT-PIM allows computing the potential for 1D, 2D, and 3D periodicities for dynamic and static problems, including problems with and without a periodic phase shift. The computational complexity of the FFT-PIM is of $O(N \log N)$ for $N$ spatially coinciding sources and observer points. The FFT-PIM uses rapidly converging series representations of the Green's function serving as a kernel in the superposition sum. Based on these representations, the FFT-PIM splits the potential into its near-zone component, which includes a small number of images surrounding the unit cell of interest, and far-zone component, which includes the rest of an infinite number of images. The far-zone component is evaluated by projecting the non-uniform sources onto a sparse uniform grid, performing superposition sums on this sparse grid, and interpolating the potential from the uniform grid to the non-uniform observation points. The near-zone component is evaluated using an FFT-based method, which is adapted to efficiently handle non-uniform source-observer distributions within the periodic unit cell. The FFT-PIM can be used for a broad range of applications, such as periodic problems involving integral equations in computational electromagnetic and acoustic, micromagnetic solvers, and density functional theory solvers.

Fatigue failure of crystalline materials is a difficult problem in science and engineering, and recent results have shown that fatigue crack growth can occur in intermittent jumps which have fat-tailed distributions. As fatigue crack propagation is known to leave markings -- called striations -- on the fracture surface, the distances between these should also have fat-tailed distributions, if the crack propagation is intermittent. Here, we combine macroscale crack tip tracking in fatigue crack growth measurements of aluminum 5005 samples with \emph{post-mortem} scanning electron microscopy imaging of the striation lines. We introduce two different methods for extracting the striation line spacing from the images. What we find is a similar distribution of striation spacings as jump sizes using one of our methods, but the average striation spacing does not correlate with the crack growth rate. We conclude that we observe avalanche-like crack propagation, reflected in both the macroscale crack tip tracking as well as the analysis of the fracture surfaces. Our results show that the fracture surfaces can be used to study the intermittency of fatigue crack propagation and in development of crack-resistant materials. The advantages and disadvantages of the two methods introduced are discussed.

This study conducts a comprehensive investigation into the reversal mechanism of magnetic vortex cores in a nanopillar system composed of two coupled ferromagnetic dots under zero magnetic field conditions. The research employs a combination of experimental and simulation methods to gain a deeper understanding of the dynamics of magnetic vortex cores. The findings reveal that by applying a constant direct current, the orientation of the vortex cores can be manipulated, resulting in a switch in one of the dots at a specific current value. The micromagnetic simulations provide evidence that this switch is a consequence of a deformation in the vortex profile caused by the increasing velocity of the vortex cores resulting from the constant amplitude of the trajectory as frequency increases. These findings offer valuable new insights into the coupled dynamics of magnetic vortex cores and demonstrate the feasibility of manipulating their orientation using direct currents under zero magnetic field conditions. The results of this study have potential implications for the development of vortex-based non-volatile memory technologies. \end{abstract}

We present a general finite element linearized Landau-Lifshitz-Gilbert equation (LLGE) solver for magnetic systems under weak time-harmonic excitation field. The linearized LLGE is obtained by assuming a small deviation around the equilibrium state of the magnetic system. Inserting such expansion into LLGE and keeping only first order terms gives the linearized LLGE, which gives a frequency domain solution for the complex magnetization amplitudes under an external time-harmonic applied field of a given frequency. We solve the linear system with an iterative solver using generalized minimal residual method. We construct a preconditioner matrix to effectively solve the linear system. The validity, effectiveness, speed, and scalability of the linear solver are demonstrated via numerical examples.

Current-induced self-sustained magnetization oscillations in spin-torque nano-oscillators (STNOs) are promising candidates for ultra-agile microwave sources or detectors. While usually STNOs behave as a monochrome source, we report here clear bimodal simultaneous emission of incommensurate microwave oscillations, where the two tones correspond to two parametrically coupled eigenmodes with tunable splitting. The emission range is crucially sensitive to the change in hybridization of the eigenmodes of free and fixed layers, for instance, through a slight tilt of the applied magnetic field from the normal of the nano-pillar. Our experimental findings are supported both analytically and by micromagnetic simulations, which ascribe the process to four-magnon scattering between a pair of radially symmetric magnon modes and a pair of magnon modes with opposite azimuthal index. Our findings open up new possibilities for cognitive telecommunications and neuromorphic systems that use frequency multiplexing to improve communication performance.

The transport response of dipole skyrmions in amorphous centrosymmetric Fe/Gd multilayer is investigated by temperature and field-dependent resistivity measurements collected in three current and magnetic field configurations. It is shown that a dipole skyrmion lattice phase may form at certain temperatures leading to a unique signature of the polar longitudinal resistivity. This signature differs from the conventional field-varying parabolic response associated with stripe phases, which transition to a disordered skyrmion phase under applied fields. Transport measurements under different field history protocols reveal that the anomaly in the polar longitudinal resistivity appears under specific field history reversal processes. Our experimental results are reproduced using micromagnetic simulations that show the anomaly in the polar longitudinal resistivity is related to a domain wall reconfiguration that occurs as the domain morphology transitions from disordered stripes to a skyrmion lattice under applied perpendicular fields.

We report on experimental study of the effect of disorder on electronic parameters and inelastic scattering mechanisms in ultrathin superconducting NbN films, which are commonly used in single-photon detectors. An increase in disorder in the studied 2.5 nm thick NbN films characterized by Ioffe-Regel parameter from 6.3 to 1.6 is accompanied by a decrease in the critical temperature $T_c$ from 11.5 K to 3.4 K. By measuring magnetoconductance in the range from $T_c$ to $\sim3T_c$, we extract the inelastic scattering rates of electrons, including electron-phonon (e-ph) scattering rates $\tau_{e-ph}^{-1}$. We observe that $\tau_{e-ph}^{-1}$ and their temperature dependencies are insensitive to disorder that is not described by the existing models of the e-ph scattering in disordered metals and can be due to the presence of weakly disordered metal grains. As the temperature decreases the temperature dependence $\tau_{e-ph}^{-1}$ changes from $T^3$ to $T^2$, which can be result of a decrease in the dimension of the phonons involved in the e-ph scattering. Neuromorphic computing approaches become increasingly important as we address future needs for efficiently processing massive amounts of data. The unique attributes of quantum materials can help address these needs by enabling new energy-efficient device concepts that implement neuromorphic ideas at the hardware level. In particular, strong correlations give rise to highly non-linear responses, such as conductive phase transitions that can be harnessed for short and long-term plasticity. Similarly, magnetization dynamics are strongly non-linear and can be utilized for data classification. This paper discusses select examples of these approaches, and provides a perspective for the current opportunities and challenges for assembling quantum-material-based devices for neuromorphic functionalities into larger emergent complex network systems.

We present an eigenvalue-based approach for studying the magnetization dynamics in magnetic nanostructures driven by spintronic excitations, such as spin transfer torque and spin orbit torque. The approach represents the system dynamics in terms of normal oscillation modes (eigenstates) with corresponding complex eigenfrequencies. The dynamics is driven by a small number of active eigenstates and often considering just a single eigenstate is sufficient. We develop a perturbation theory that provides semi-analytical dynamic solutions by using eigenstates for the case in the absence of damping and spintronic excitations as a basis. The approach provides important insights into dynamics in such systems and allows solving several difficulties in their modeling, such as extracting the switching current in magnetic random access memories (MRAM) and understanding switching mechanisms. We show that the presented approach directly predicts the critical switching current, i.e., switching current for an infinite time. The approach also provides solutions for the switching dynamics allowing obtaining the switching current for a finite switching time, provided that the system symmetry is broken, e.g., by tilting the polarizer, so that switching by a finite pulse is possible.

The discovery of new mechanisms of controlling magnetic properties by electric fields or currents furthers the fundamental understanding of magnetism and has important implications for practical use. Here, we present a novel approach of utilizing resistive switching to control magnetic anisotropy. We study a ferromagnetic oxide that exhibits an electrically triggered metal-to-insulator phase transition producing a volatile resistive switching. This switching occurs in a characteristic spatial pattern: the formation of a transverse insulating barrier inside a metallic matrix resulting in an unusual ferromagnetic/paramagnetic/ferromagnetic configuration. We found that the formation of this voltage-driven paramagnetic insulating barrier is accompanied by the emergence of a strong uniaxial magnetic anisotropy that overpowers the intrinsic material anisotropy. Our results demonstrate that resistive switching is an effective tool for manipulating magnetic properties. Because resistive switching can be induced in a very broad range of materials, our findings could enable a new class of voltage-controlled magnetism systems.

We study three structurally different states of nanocrystalline 316 steel and show that the state, where boundaries containing excess concentration of alloying elements are combined with mobile dislocations in grain interiors, allows maintaining extraordinarily high strength and remarkably enhanced plasticity. Underlying mechanisms featuring interaction between the segregations and mobile dislocations are discussed.

The orbital observatory Spectrum-Roentgen-Gamma (SRG), equipped with the grazing-incidence X-ray telescopes Mikhail Pavlinsky ART-XC and eROSITA, was launched by Roscosmos to the Lagrange L2 point of the Sun-Earth system on July 13, 2019. The launch was carried out from the Baikonur Cosmodrome by a Proton-M rocket with a DM-03 upper stage. The German telescope eROSITA was installed on SRG under an agreement between Roskosmos and the DLR, the German Aerospace Agency. In December 2019, SRG started to perform its main scientific task: scanning the celestial sphere to obtain X-ray maps of the entire sky in several energy ranges (from 0.2 to 8 keV with eROSITA, and from 4 to 30 keV with ART-XC). By mid-June 2021, the third six-month all-sky survey had been completed. Over a period of four years, it is planned to obtain eight independent maps of the entire sky in each of the energy ranges. The sum of these maps will provide high sensitivity and reveal more than three million quasars and over one hundred thousand massive galaxy clusters and galaxy groups. The availability of eight sky maps will enable monitoring of long-term variability (every six months) of a huge number of extragalactic and Galactic X-ray sources, including hundreds of thousands of stars with hot coronae. The rotation of the satellite around the axis directed toward the Sun with a period of four hours enables tracking the faster variability of bright X-ray sources during one day every half year. The chosen strategy of scanning the sky leads to the formation of deep survey zones near both ecliptic poles. We present a micromagnetic formulation for modeling the magnetization dynamics and thermal equilibrium in ferrimagnetic materials at low and elevated temperatures. The formulation is based on a mean field approximation (MFA). In this formulation, the ferrimagnet is described micromagnetically by two coupled sublattices with corresponding interactions, including inter- and intra-sublattice micromagnetic exchange as well as four-spin interactions described as an inter-sublattice molecular field with a cubic dependence of the magnetization. The MFA is used to derive a Landau Lifshitz Bloch type equation for ferrimagnetic material, including cases with a ferromagnetic - antiferromagnetic phase transitions. ART-XC (Astronomical Roentgen Telescope - X-ray Concentrator) is the hard X-ray instrument with grazing incidence imaging optics on board the Spektr-Roentgen-Gamma (SRG) observatory. The SRG observatory is the flagship astrophysical mission of the Russian Federal Space Program, which was successively launched into orbit around the second Lagrangian point (L2) of the Earth-Sun system with a Proton rocket from the Baikonur cosmodrome on 13 July 2019. The ART-XC telescope will provide the first ever true imaging all-sky survey performed with grazing incidence optics in the 4-30 keV energy band and will obtain the deepest and sharpest map of the sky in the energy range of 4-12 keV. Observations performed during the early calibration and performance verification phase as well as during the on-going all-sky survey that started on 12 Dec. 2019 have demonstrated that the in-flight characteristics of the ART-XC telescope are very close to expectations based on the results of ground calibrations. Upon completion of its 4-year all-sky survey, ART-XC is expected to detect ~5000 sources (~3000 active galactic nuclei, including heavily obscured ones, several hundred clusters of galaxies, ~1000 cataclysmic variables and other Galactic sources), and to provide a high-quality map of the Galactic background emission in the 4-12 keV energy band. ART-XC is also well suited for discovering transient X-ray sources. Imagine an app on your phone or computer that can tell if you are being dishonest, just by processing affective features of your facial expressions, body movements, and voice. People could ask about your political preferences, your sexual orientation, and immediately determine which of your responses are honest and which are not. In this paper we argue why artificial intelligence-based, non-invasive lie detection technologies are likely to experience a rapid advancement in the coming years, and that it would be irresponsible to wait any longer before discussing its implications. Legal and popular perspectives are reviewed to evaluate the potential for these technologies to cause societal harm. To understand the perspective of a reasonable person, we conducted a survey of 129 individuals, and identified consent and accuracy as the major factors in their decision-making process regarding the use of these technologies. In our analysis, we distinguish two types of lie detection technology, accurate truth metering and accurate thought exposing. We generally find that truth metering is already largely within the scope of existing US federal and state laws, albeit with some notable exceptions. In contrast, we find that current regulation of thought exposing technologies is ambiguous and inadequate to safeguard civil liberties. All-optical switching of the magnetization in magnetic nanostructures by femtosecond circularly polarized laser pulses has been demonstrated in several systems. We present a Landau-Lifshitz-Lambda (LLL) model which describes the magnetization dynamics using three density states: two ferromagnetic grounds states and an excited optical state. One of the ferromagnetic ground states is optically excited by circularly polarized light to a spin reversed state, which is then "Coulomb collapsed" to the magnetization reversed ground state. The time evolution of the optically excited states is described by a Lindblad master equation, in which the optical excitation is introduced via the Hamiltonian. Dissipation terms are introduced via Lindblad operators. The LLL model combines the precessional motion of the magnetization described by the Landau-Lifshitz theory, with the response of the three level Lambda system. The optical excitation lasts for the duration of the laser pulse and the system relaxes at a fast rate due to the electron-electron interaction. We study the solution of the eigenvalues problem of the optical equation of motion for the magnetization and identify a coherent and incoherent regimes and derive an LLL model that can be integrated with existing micromagnetic codes to describe optical excitation of magnetic materials., Comment: 22 pages, 9 figures

eROSITA (extended ROentgen Survey with an Imaging Telescope Array) is the primary instrument on the Spectrum-Roentgen-Gamma (SRG) mission, which was successfully launched on July 13, 2019, from the Baikonour cosmodrome. After the commissioning of the instrument and a subsequent calibration and performance verification phase, eROSITA started a survey of the entire sky on December 13, 2019. By the end of 2023, eight complete scans of the celestial sphere will have been performed, each lasting six months. At the end of this program, the eROSITA all-sky survey in the soft X-ray band (0.2--2.3\,keV) will be about 25 times more sensitive than the ROSAT All-Sky Survey, while in the hard band (2.3--8\,keV) it will provide the first ever true imaging survey of the sky. The eROSITA design driving science is the detection of large samples of galaxy clusters up to redshifts $z>1$ in order to study the large-scale structure of the universe and test cosmological models including Dark Energy. In addition, eROSITA is expected to yield a sample of a few million AGNs, including obscured objects, revolutionizing our view of the evolution of supermassive black holes. The survey will also provide new insights into a wide range of astrophysical phenomena, including X-ray binaries, active stars, and diffuse emission within the Galaxy. Results from early observations, some of which are presented here, confirm that the performance of the instrument is able to fulfil its scientific promise. The field of magnonics, which aims at using spin waves as carriers in data processing devices, has attracted increasing interest in recent years. We present and study micromagnetically a nonlinear nanoscale magnonic ring resonator device for enabling implementations of magnonic logic gates and neuromorphic magnonic circuits. In the linear regime, this device efficiently suppresses spin-wave transmission using the phenomenon of critical resonant coupling, thus exhibiting the behavior of a notch filter. By increasing the spin-wave input power, the resonance frequency is shifted leading to transmission curves, depending on the frequency, reminiscent of the activation functions of neurons or showing the characteristics of a power limiter. An analytical theory is developed to describe the transmission curve of magnonic ring resonators in the linear and nonlinear regimes and validated by a comprehensive micromagnetic study. The ExoMars Trace Gas Orbiter (TGO) was sent to Mars in March 2016 to search for trace gases diagnostic of active geological or biogenic processes. We report the first observation of the spectral features of Martian ozone (O3) in the mid-infrared range using the Atmospheric Chemistry Suite (ACS) Mid-InfaRed (MIR) channel, a cross-dispersion spectrometer operating in solar occultation mode with the finest spectral resolution of any remote sensing mission to Mars. Observations of ozone were made at high northern latitudes (>65N) prior to the onset of the 2018 global dust storm (Ls = 163-193). During this fast transition phase between summer and winter ozone distribution, the O3 volume mixing ratio observed is 100-200 ppbv near 20 km. These amounts are consistent with past observations made at the edge of the southern polar vortex in the ultraviolet range. The observed spectral signature of ozone at 3000-3060 cm-1 directly overlaps with the spectral range of the methane (CH4) nu3 vibration-rotation band, and it, along with a newly discovered CO2 band in the same region, may interfere with measurements of methane abundance., Comment: 7 pages, 6 figures

A complex study of aging kinetics for both coarse-grained and nanostructured by severe plastic deformation Cu -- 2 wt% Be alloy is reported. It is shown that aging of a coarse-grained alloy leads to continuous formation of nanosized CuBe body centred cubic (bcc, CsCl -- type) semi-coherent particles with the {220} Cu // {200} CuBe crystallographic orientation relationship. These particles created significant internal stress fields and became obstacles for dislocation glide that resulted in a change in the hardness from 95 Vickers hardness (HV) for the solubilized alloy to 400 HV for the aged one. The severe plastic deformation led to the formation of a single-phase nanograined microstructure with an average grain size of 20 nm and 390 HV. It was found that this grain size was slightly driven by grain boundary segregation. Further aging of the nanocrystalline alloy led to the discontinuous formation of precipitates on the former Cu grain boundaries and skipping of metastable phases. Significant age hardening with a maximum hardness of 466 HV for the aged nanostructured alloy was observed. Mechanical tests result revealed a strong influence of microstructure and further aging on strength capability of the alloy for both coarse-grained and nanostructured alloy. A good thermal stability in the nanostructured alloy was also noticed. Theoretical calculations of the hardness value for the CuBe phase are provided. It was shown that Be as a light alloying elements could be used for direct change of microstructure of severely deformed copper alloys.

In this paper, we consider the task of one-shot object detection, which consists in detecting objects defined by a single demonstration. Differently from the standard object detection, the classes of objects used for training and testing do not overlap. We build the one-stage system that performs localization and recognition jointly. We use dense correlation matching of learned local features to find correspondences, a feed-forward geometric transformation model to align features and bilinear resampling of the correlation tensor to compute the detection score of the aligned features. All the components are differentiable, which allows end-to-end training. Experimental evaluation on several challenging domains (retail products, 3D objects, buildings and logos) shows that our method can detect unseen classes (e.g., toothpaste when trained on groceries) and outperforms several baselines by a significant margin. A formulation for thermal noise in the stochastic form of the Landau Lifshitz Bloch equation used for modeling the magnetization dynamics at elevated temperatures is presented. The diffusion coefficients for thermal fluctuations are obtained via the Fokker-Plank equation using the mean field approximation of the field in defining the free energy. The presented model leads to a mean magnetization consistent with the equilibrium magnetization for small and large particles. The distribution of the magnetization magnitude is of a Poisson-like type rather than the classical Boltzmann distribution. The presented model was tested by studying the equilibrium magnetization in macrospin particles at high temperatures. This paper presents a method for algebraic fault detection and identification of nonlinear mechanical systems, describing rigid robots, by using an approximation with orthonormal Jacobi polynomials. An explicit expression is derived for the fault from the equation of motion, which is decoupled from disturbances and only depends on measurable signals and their time derivatives. Fault detection and identification is then achieved by polynomial approximation of the determined fault term. The results are illustrated for a faulty SCARA.

We describe the inclusion of electrodynamic fields in Time-Dependent Density Functional Theory (TDDFT) by incorporating both the induced scalar and vector potentials within the time-dependent Kohn-Sham equation. The Hamiltonian is described in both the Coulomb and Lorenz gauges, and the advantages of the latter are outlined. Integral expressions are defined for the retarded potentials of each gauge and a methodological approach to evaluate these nontrivial expressions with low computational cost is adopted. Various molecular structures of relatively small sizes are studied, including water, benzene, and conductive carbon chains. Absorption cross sections resulting from both pulse and boost excitations suggest a preserved gauge-invariance of the proposed formal approach to TDDFT in the weak magnetic field limit.

We report on experimental and computational investigations of the domain structure of ~0.2 x 0.2 x 8 {\mu}m single-crystal Ni nanowires (NWs). The Ni NWs were grown by a thermal chemical vapor deposition technique that results in highly-oriented single-crystal structures on amorphous SiOx coated Si substrates. Magnetoresistance measurements of the Ni NWs suggest the average magnetization points largely off the NW long axis at zero field. X-ray photoemission electron microscopy images show a well-defined periodic magnetization pattern along the surface of the nanowires with a period of {\lambda} = 250 nm. Finite element micromagnetic simulations reveal that an oscillatory magnetization configuration with a period closely matching experimental observation ({\lambda} = 240 nm) is obtainable at remanence. This magnetization configuration involves a periodic array of alternating chirality vortex domains distributed along the length of the NW. Vortex formation is attributable to the cubic anisotropy of the single crystal Ni NW system and its reduced structural dimensions. The periodic alternating chirality vortex state is a topologically protected metastable state, analogous to an array of 360{\deg} domain walls in a thin strip. Simulations show that other remanent states are also possible, depending on the field history. Effects of material properties and strain on the vortex pattern are investigated. It is shown that at reduced cubic anisotropy vortices are no longer stable, while negative uniaxial anisotropy and magnetoelastic effects in the presence of compressive biaxial strain contribute to vortex formation., Comment: 15 pages, 11 figures

We use an efficient projection scheme for the Fock operator to analyze the size dependence of silicon quantum dots (QDs) electronic properties. We compare the behavior of hybrid, screened hybrid and local density functionals as a function of the dot size up to $\sim$800 silicon atoms and volume of up to $\sim$20nm$^3$. This allows comparing the calculations of hybrid and screened hybrid functionals to experimental results over a wide range of QD sizes. We demonstrate the size dependent behavior of the band gap, density of states, ionization potential and HOMO level shift after ionization. Those results are compared to experiment and to other theoretical approaches, such as tight-binding, empirical pseudopotentials, TDDFT and GW.

The dynamic response of dipole skyrmions in Fe/Gd multilayer films is investigated by ferromagnetic resonance measurements and compared to micromagnetic simulations. We detail thickness and temperature dependent studies of the observed modes as well as the effects of magnetic field history on the resonant spectra. Correlation between the modes and the magnetic phase maps constructed from real-space imaging and scattering patterns allows us to conclude the resonant modes arise from local topological features such as dipole skyrmions but does not depend on the collective response of a closed packed lattice of these chiral textures. Using, micromagnetic modeling, we are able to quantitatively reproduce our experimental observations which suggests the existence of localized spin-wave modes that are dependent on the helicity of the dipole skyrmion. We identify four localized spin wave excitations for the skyrmions that are excited under either in-plane or out-of-plane r.f. fields. Lastly we show that dipole skyrmions and non-chiral bubble domains exhibit qualitatively different localized spin wave modes., Comment: 38 pages, 17 figures

Recently, Lorentz transmission electron microscopy (LTEM) has helped researchers advance the emerging field of magnetic skyrmions. These magnetic quasi-particles, composed of topologically non-trivial magnetization textures, have a large potential for application as information carriers in low-power memory and logic devices. LTEM is one of a very few techniques for direct real space imaging of magnetic features at the nanoscale. For Fresnel-contrast LTEM, the transport of intensity equation (TIE) is the tool of choice for quantitative reconstruction of the local magnetic induction through the sample thickness. Typically this analysis requires collection of at least three images.Here we show that for uniform thin magnetic films which includes many skyrmionic samples, the magnetic induction can be quantitatively determined from a single defocused image using a simplified TIE approach.

The interesting physics and potential memory technologies resulting from topologically protected spin textures such as skyrmions, has prompted efforts to discover new material systems that can host these kind of magnetic structures. Here we use the highly tunable magnetic properties of amorphous Fe/Gd multilayer films to explore the magnetic properties that lead to dipole-stabilized skyrmions and skyrmion lattices that form from the competition of dipolar field and exchange energy. Using both real space imaging and reciprocal space scattering techniques we determined the range of material properties and magnetic fields where skyrmions form. Micromagnetic modeling closely matches our observation of small skyrmion features (~50 to 70nm) and suggests these class of skyrmions have a rich domain structure that is Bloch like in the center of the film and more N\'eel like towards each surface. Our results provide a pathway to engineer the formation and controllability of dipole skyrmion phases in a thin film geometry at different temperatures and magnetic fields., Comment: 34 pages, 11 figures

Graph algorithms are increasingly used in applications that exploit large databases. However, conventional processor architectures are inadequate for handling the throughput and memory requirements of graph computation. Lincoln Laboratory's graph-processor architecture represents a rethinking of parallel architectures for graph problems. Our processor utilizes innovations that include a sparse matrix-based graph instruction set, a cacheless memory system, accelerator-based architecture, a systolic sorter, high-bandwidth multi-dimensional toroidal communication network, and randomized communications. In order to increase the thermal stability of a magnetic random access memory (MRAM) cell, materials with high spin-orbit interaction are often introduced in the storage layer. As a side effect, a strong Dzyaloshinskii-Moriya interaction (DMI) may arise in such systems. Here we investigate the impact of DMI on the magnetic cell performance, using micromagnetic simulations. We find that DMI strongly promotes non-uniform magnetization states and non-uniform switching modes of the magnetic layer. It appears to be detrimental for both the thermal stability of the cell and its switching current, leading to considerable deterioration of the cell performance even for a moderate DMI amplitude., Comment: 5 pages, 3 figures

Magnetic nanowires supporting field- and current-driven domain wall motion are envisioned for new methods of information storage and processing. A major obstacle for their practical use is the domainwall velocity, which is traditionally limited due to the Walker breakdown occurring when the forcing field or current reaches a critical threshold value. We show through numerical and analytical modeling that the Walker breakdown limit can be extended or completely eliminated in antiferromagnetically coupled magnetic nanowires. These coupled nanowires allow for giant domain-wall velocities driven by field and/or current via spin transfer torque as compared to conventional nanowires.

The generation of coherent radiation in nanostructures has attracted considerable interest in recent years owing both to the quantum electrodynamical effects that emerge in small volumes, and to their potential for future applications. The progress towards exploring this size regime, however, has been hindered by the lack of a systematic approach to scaling down the mode as the structures shrink in size and by the high threshold power required for lasing in small cavities. Here we present a new family of metamaterial-like nano-cavities consisting of metallic coaxial nanostructures that solves both of these problems. The proposed nanoscale coaxial cavities can operate as thresholdless lasers, and their size is not restricted by the mode cut-off. Using these new nano-cavities we have succeeded to demonstrate for the first time thresholdless lasing in a broadband gain medium, and the smallest room temperature, continuous wave, telecom laser to date. The nanoscale coaxial cavities are the first systematic step towards unveiling the potentials of ultra small quantum electrodynamical objects in which atom-field interactions generate new functionalities., Comment: 16 pages, 4 figures

We introduce a new fundamental property of waveguides induced by the forces of the guided light, namely, the ability to self align or be in instability. A nanoscale waveguide broken by an offset and a gap may tend to self align to form a continuous waveguide. Conversely, depending on the geometry and light polarization, the two parts of the waveguide may be deflected away from each other, thus being in an unstable state. These effects are unique as they rely on the presence of both the guided mode and the scattered light. Strong self alignment forces may be facilitated by near field interaction with polarization surface charges.

Hybrid spectral-spatial representations are introduced to rapidly calculate periodic scalar and dyadic Green's functions of the Helmholtz equation for 2D and 3D configurations with a 1D (linear) periodicity. The presented schemes work seamlessly for any observation location near the array and for any practical array periodicities, including electrically small and large periodicities. The representations are based on the expansion of the periodic Green's functions in terms of the continuous spectral integrals over the transverse (to the array) spectral parameters. To achieve high convergence and numerical efficiency, the introduced integral representations are cast in a hybrid form in terms of (i) a small number of contributions due to sources located around the unit cell of interest, (ii) a small number of symmetric combinations of the Floquet modes, and (iii) an integral evaluated along the steepest descent path (SDP). The SDP integral is regularized by extracting the singular behavior near the saddle point of the integrand and integrating the extracted components in closed form. Efficient quadrature rules are established to evaluate this integral using a small number of quadrature nodes with arbitrary small error for a wide range of structure parameters. A vital, outstanding question is how and when these planets diverged in their atmospheric evolutions. Significantly, recent investigations present evidence for microbial life in Venus' cloud deck. Venus presents us with fundamental questions about the origin and evolution of planetary bodies and life in our Solar System.Venera-D (D stands for the Russian word for "long-lived:" dolgozhivushaya) is a potential mission that would combine simultaneous observations of Venus' atmosphere, plasma environment, and surface to try to answer these essential questions.

Spectrum Roentgen Gamma (SRG) is an X-ray astrophysical observatory, developed by Russia in collaboration with Germany. The mission will be launched in March 2016 from Baikonur, by a Zenit rocket with a Fregat booster and placed in a 6-month-period halo orbit around L2. The scientific payload consists of two independent telescopes - a soft-x-ray survey instrument, eROSITA, being provided by Germany and a medium-x-ray-energy survey instrument ART-XC being developed by Russia. ART-XC will consist of seven independent, but co-aligned, telescope modules. The NASA Marshall Space Flight Center (MSFC) is fabricating the flight mirror modules for the ART-XC/SRG. Each mirror module will be aligned with a focal plane CdTe double-sided strip detectors which will operate over the energy range of 6-30 keV, with an angular resolution of less than 1′, a field of view of approximately 34′ and an expected energy resolution of about 10 percent at 14 keV.

Rapid, size-based, deposition of particles from liquid suspension is accomplished using a nonuniform electric field created by coplanar microelectrode strips patterned on an insulating substrate. The scheme uses the dielectrophoretic force both to distribute aqueous liquid containing particles and, simultaneously, to separate the particles. Size-based separation is found within nanoliter droplets formed along the structure after voltage removal. Bioparticles or macromolecules of similar size can also be separated based on subtle differences in dielectric property, by controlling the frequency of the AC current supplied to the electrodes.
