The article reports that the researchers at the Technion-Israel Institute of Technology have discovered polymorphic crystalline structures of triacetone-triperoxide (TATP), the easy-to-make but difficult to detect explosive used by terrorists worldwide. Professor Ehud Keinan of the Technion Faculty of Chemistry and his colleagues have found that the explosive can form at least six different types of crystals, depending on the conditions during its synthesis and crystallization.

The article reports that the disclosure in which British officials foiled a potential terrorist plot to explode bombs aboard several or more aircraft using liquid explosives and other materials, showed that security systems, particularly at passenger checkpoints, are still lacking in their ability to detect certain explosives. Analysts and industry officials say that few airports worldwide have deployed technology at their passenger security checkpoints to detect liquid explosives.

The article reports that Cubic Corp. and General Electric said they have integrated explosives detection technology into a ticket vending machine and expect to announce a pilot program, as of March 8, 2006.
