A finite impulse response (FIR) filter is a ubiquitous block in digital signal processing applications. Its characteristics are determined by its coefficients, which are the intellectual property (IP) for its designer. However, in a hardware efficient realization, its coefficients become vulnerable to reverse engineering. This paper presents a filter design technique that can protect this IP, taking into account hardware complexity and ensuring that the filter behaves as specified only when a secret key is provided. To do so, coefficients are hidden among decoys, which are selected beyond possible values of coefficients using three alternative methods. As an attack scenario, an adversary at an untrusted foundry is considered. A reverse engineering technique is developed to find the chosen decoy selection method and explore the potential leakage of coefficients through decoys. An oracle-less attack is also used to find the secret key. Experimental results show that the proposed technique can lead to filter designs with competitive hardware complexity and higher resiliency to attacks with respect to previously proposed methods.

Obfuscation is a technique for protecting hardware intellectual property (IP) blocks against reverse engineering, piracy, and malicious modifications. Current obfuscation efforts mainly focus on functional locking of a design to prevent black-box usage. They do not directly address hiding design intent through structural transformations, which is an important objective of obfuscation. We note that current obfuscation techniques incorporate only: (1) local, and (2) predictable changes in circuit topology. In this paper, we present SAIL, a structural attack on obfuscation using machine learning (ML) models that exposes a critical vulnerability of these methods. Through this attack, we demonstrate that the gate-level structure of an obfuscated design can be retrieved in most parts through a systematic set of steps. The proposed attack is applicable to all forms of logic obfuscation, and significantly more powerful than existing attacks, e.g., SAT-based attacks, since it does not require the availability of golden functional responses (e.g. an unlocked IC). Evaluation on benchmark circuits show that we can recover an average of around 84% (up to 95%) transformations introduced by obfuscation. Building and maintaining a silicon foundry is a costly endeavor that requires substantial financial investment. From this scenario, the semiconductor business has largely shifted to a fabless model where the Integrated Circuit supply chain is globalized but potentially untrusted. In recent years, several hardware obfuscation techniques have emerged to thwart hardware security threats related to untrusted IC fabrication. Reconfigurable-based obfuscation schemes have shown great promise of security against state-of-the-art attacks -- these are techniques that rely on the transformation of static logic configurable elements such as Look Up Tables (LUTs). This survey provides a comprehensive analysis of reconfigurable-based obfuscation techniques, evaluating their overheads and enumerating their effectiveness against all known attacks. The techniques are also classified based on different factors, including the technology used, element type, and IP type. Additionally, we present a discussion on the advantages of reconfigurable-based obfuscation techniques when compared to Logic Locking techniques and the challenges associated with evaluating these techniques on hardware, primarily due to the lack of tapeouts. The survey's findings are essential for researchers interested in hardware obfuscation and future trends in this area.

Machine learning has shown great promise in addressing several critical hardware security problems. In particular, researchers have developed novel graph neural network (GNN)-based techniques for detecting intellectual property (IP) piracy, detecting hardware Trojans (HTs), and reverse engineering circuits, to name a few. These techniques have demonstrated outstanding accuracy and have received much attention in the community. However, since these techniques are used for security applications, it is imperative to evaluate them thoroughly and ensure they are robust and do not compromise the security of integrated circuits. In this work, we propose AttackGNN, the first red-team attack on GNN-based techniques in hardware security. To this end, we devise a novel reinforcement learning (RL) agent that generates adversarial examples, i.e., circuits, against the GNN-based techniques. We overcome three challenges related to effectiveness, scalability, and generality to devise a potent RL agent. We target five GNN-based techniques for four crucial classes of problems in hardware security: IP piracy, detecting/localizing HTs, reverse engineering, and hardware obfuscation. Through our approach, we craft circuits that fool all GNNs considered in this work. For instance, to evade IP piracy detection, we generate adversarial pirated circuits that fool the GNN-based defense into classifying our crafted circuits as not pirated. For attacking HT localization GNN, our attack generates HT-infested circuits that fool the defense on all tested circuits. We explore security aspects of a new computing paradigm that combines novel memristors and traditional Complimentary Metal Oxide Semiconductor (CMOS) to construct a highly efficient analog and/or digital fabric that is especially well-suited to Machine Learning (ML) inference processors for Radio Frequency (RF) signals. Memristors have different properties than traditional CMOS which can potentially be exploited by attackers. In addition, the mixed signal approximate computing model has different vulnerabilities than traditional digital implementations. However both the memristor and the ML computation can be leveraged to create security mechanisms and countermeasures ranging from lightweight cryptography, identifiers (e.g. Physically Unclonable Functions (PUFs), fingerprints, and watermarks), entropy sources, hardware obfuscation and leakage/attack detection methods. Three different threat models are proposed: 1) Supply Chain, 2) Physical Attacks, and 3) Remote Attacks. For each threat model, potential vulnerabilities and defenses are identified. This survey reviews a variety of recent work from the hardware and ML security literature and proposes open problems for both attack and defense. The survey emphasizes the growing area of RF signal analysis and identification in terms of the commercial space, as well as military applications and threat models. A digital Finite Impulse Response (FIR) filter is a ubiquitous block in digital signal processing applications and its behavior is determined by its coefficients. To protect filter coefficients from an adversary, efficient obfuscation techniques have been proposed, either by hiding them behind decoys or replacing them by key bits. In this article, we initially introduce a query attack that can discover the secret key of such obfuscated FIR filters, which could not be broken by existing prominent attacks. Then, we propose a first of its kind hybrid technique, including both hardware obfuscation and logic locking using a point function for the protection of parallel direct and transposed forms of digital FIR filters. Experimental results show that the hybrid protection technique can lead to FIR filters with higher security while maintaining the hardware complexity competitive or superior to those locked by prominent logic locking methods. It is also shown that the protected multiplier blocks and FIR filters are resilient to existing attacks. The results on different forms and realizations of FIR filters show that the parallel direct form FIR filter has a promising potential for a secure design.

Neural networks (NNs) are already deployed in hardware today, becoming valuable intellectual property (IP) as many hours are invested in their training and optimization. Therefore, attackers may be interested in copying, reverse engineering, or even modifying this IP. The current practices in hardware obfuscation, including the widely studied logic locking technique, are insufficient to protect the actual IP of a well-trained NN: its weights. Simply hiding the weights behind a key-based scheme is inefficient (resource-hungry) and inadequate (attackers can exploit knowledge distillation). This paper proposes an intuitive method to poison the predictions that prevent distillation-based attacks; this is the first work to consider such a poisoning approach in hardware-implemented NNs. The proposed technique obfuscates a NN so an attacker cannot train the NN entirely or accurately. We elaborate a threat model which highlights the difference between random logic obfuscation and the obfuscation of NN IP. Based on this threat model, our security analysis shows that the poisoning successfully and significantly reduces the accuracy of the stolen NN model on various representative datasets. Moreover, the accuracy and prediction distributions are maintained, no functionality is disturbed, nor are high overheads incurred. Finally, we highlight that our proposed approach is flexible and does not require manipulation of the NN toolchain.

Integrated circuit (IC) piracy and overproduction are serious issues that threaten the security and integrity of a system. Logic locking is a type of hardware obfuscation technique where additional key gates are inserted into the circuit. Only the correct key can unlock the functionality of that circuit otherwise the system produces the wrong output. In an effort to hinder these threats on ICs, we have developed a probability-based logic locking technique to protect the design of a circuit. Our proposed technique called "ProbLock" can be applied to combinational and sequential circuits through a critical selection process. We used a filtering process to select the best location of key gates based on various constraints. Each step in the filtering process generates a subset of nodes for each constraint. We also analyzed the correlation between each constraint and adjusted the strength of the constraints before inserting key gates. We have tested our algorithm on 40 benchmarks from the ISCAS '85 and ISCAS '89 suite.

Hardware IP protection has been one of the most critical areas of research in the past years. Recently, attacks on hardware IPs (such as reverse engineering or cloning) have evolved as attackers have developed sophisticated techniques. Therefore, hardware obfuscation has been introduced as a powerful tool to protect IPs against piracy attacks. However, many recent attempts to break existing obfuscation methods have been successful in unlocking the IP and restoring its functionality. In this paper, we propose SARO, a Scalable Attack-Resistant Obfuscation that provides a robust functional and structural design transformation process. SARO treats the target circuit as a graph, and performs a partitioning algorithm to produce a set of sub-graphs, then applies our novel Truth Table Transformation (T3) process to each partition. We also propose the $T3_{metric}$, which is developed to quantify the structural and functional design transformation level caused by the obfuscation process. We evaluate SARO on ISCAS85 and EPFL benchmarks, and provide full security and performance analysis of our proposed framework.

The threat of hardware reverse engineering is a growing concern for a large number of applications. A main defense strategy against reverse engineering is hardware obfuscation. In this paper, we investigate physical obfuscation techniques, which perform alterations of circuit elements that are difficult or impossible for an adversary to observe. The examples of such stealthy manipulations are changes in the doping concentrations or dielectric manipulations. An attacker will, thus, extract a netlist, which does not correspond to the logic function of the device-under-attack. This approach of camouflaging has garnered recent attention in the literature. In this paper, we expound on this promising direction to conduct a systematic end-to-end study of the VLSI design process to find multiple ways to obfuscate a circuit for hardware security. This paper makes three major contributions. First, we provide a categorization of the available physical obfuscation techniques as it pertains to various design stages. There is a large and multidimensional design space for introducing obfuscated elements and mechanisms, and the proposed taxonomy is helpful for a systematic treatment. Second, we provide a review of the methods that have been proposed or in use. Third, we present recent and new device and logic-level techniques for design obfuscation. For each technique considered, we discuss feasibility of the approach and assess likelihood of its detection. Then we turn our focus to open research questions, and conclude with suggestions for future research directions.

To reduce the cost of ICs and to meet the market's demand, a considerable portion of manufacturing supply chain, including silicon fabrication, packaging and testing may be pushed offshore. Utilizing a global IC manufacturing supply chain, and inclusion of non-trusted parties in the supply chain has raised concerns over security and trust related challenges including those of overproduction, counterfeiting, IP piracy, and Hardware Trojans to name a few. To reduce the risk of IC manufacturing in an untrusted and globally distributed supply chain, the researchers have proposed various locking and obfuscation mechanisms for hiding the functionality of the ICs during the manufacturing, that requires the activation of the IP after fabrication using the key value(s) that is only known to the IP/IC owner. At the same time, many such proposed obfuscation and locking mechanisms are broken with attacks that exploit the inherent vulnerabilities in such solutions. The past decade of research in this area, has resulted in many such defense and attack solutions. In this paper, we review a decade of research on hardware obfuscation from an attacker perspective, elaborate on attack and defense lessons learned, and discuss future directions that could be exploited for building stronger defenses.

With the emergence of the Internet-of-Things (IoT), there is a growing need for access control and data protection on low-power, pervasive devices. Biometric-based authentication is promising for IoT due to its convenient nature and lower susceptibility to attacks. However, the costs associated with biometric processing and template protection are nontrivial for smart cards, key fobs, and so forth. In this paper, we discuss the security, cost, and utility of biometric systems and develop two major frameworks for improving them. First, we introduce a new framework for implementing biometric systems based on physical unclonable functions (PUFs) and hardware obfuscation that, unlike traditional software approaches, does not require nonvolatile storage of a biometric template/key. Aside from reducing the risk of compromising the biometric, the nature of obfuscation also provides protection against access control circumvention via malware and fault injection. The PUF provides non-invertibility and non-linkability. Second, a major requirement of the proposed PUF/obfuscation approach is that a reliable (robust) key be generated from the users input biometric. We propose a noiseaware biometric quantization framework capable of generating unique, reliable keys with reduced enrollment time and denoising costs. Finally, we conduct several case studies. In the first, the proposed noise-aware approach is compared to our previous approach for multiple biometric modalities, including popular ones (fingerprint and iris) and emerging cardiovascular ones (ECG and PPG). The results show that ECG provides the best tradeoff between reliability, key length, entropy, and cost. In the second and third case studies, we demonstrate how reliability, denoising costs, and enrollment times can be simultaneously improved by modeling subject intra-variations for ECG., Comment: 11 pages, 9 figures

This is the first work augmenting hardware attacks mounted on obfuscated circuits by incorporating deep recurrent neural network (D-RNN). Logic encryption obfuscation has been used for thwarting counterfeiting, overproduction, and reverse engineering but vulnerable to attacks. There have been efficient schemes, e.g., satisfiability-checking (SAT) based attack, which can potentially compromise hardware obfuscation circuits. Nevertheless, not only there exist countermeasures against such attacks in the state-of-the-art (including the recent delay+logic locking (DLL) scheme in DAC'17), but the sheer amount of time/resources to mount the attack could hinder its efficacy. In this paper, we propose a deep RNN-oriented approach, called BOCANet, to (i) compromise the obfuscated hardware at least an order-of magnitude more efficiently (>20X faster with relatively high success rate) compared to existing attacks; (ii) attack such locked hardware even when the resources to the attacker are only limited to insignificant number of I/O pairs (< 0.5\%) to reconstruct the secret key; and (iii) break a number of experimented benchmarks (ISCAS-85 c423, c1355, c1908, and c7552) successfully.
