Materials with chiral electronic structures are of great interest. We report a triazatruxene, TAT, molecular semiconductor with chiral alkyl side chains that crystallises from solution to form chirally-stacked columns with a helical pitch of 6 TATs (2.3 nm). These crystals show strong circularly polarised, CP, green photoluminescence, with dissymmetry of 24%. Electronic structure calculations using the full crystal structure, show that this chiral stacking associates angular momentum to the valence and conduction states and thus gives rise to the observed CP luminescence. Free-standing crystals are not useful for active semiconductor devices, but we have discovered that co-sublimation of TAT as the guest in a structurally mismatched host enables the fabrication of thin films where the chiral crystallization is achieved in-situ by thermally-triggered nano-phase segregation of dopant and host whilst preserving the integrity of the film. This enables fabrication of bright (green) organic light-emitting diodes with unexpectedly high external quantum efficiencies of up to 16% and electroluminescence dissymmetries above 10%. These materials and this process method offer significant application potential in spintronics, optical displays and multidimensional optoelectronics.

Optical control and read-out of the ground state spin structure has been demonstrated for defect states in crystalline semiconductors, including the diamond NV- center, and these are promising systems for quantum technologies. Molecular organic semiconductors offer synthetic control of spin placement, in contrast to current limitations in these crystalline systems. Here we report the discovery of spin-optical addressability in a diradical molecule that comprises two trityl radical groups coupled via a fluorene bridge. We demonstrate the three important properties that enable operation as a spin-photon interface: (i) triplet and singlet spin states show photoluminescence peaked at 640 and 700 nm respectively; this allows easy optical measurement of ground state spin. (ii) the ground state spin exchange is small (~60 {\mu}eV) that allows preparation of ground state spin population. This can be achieved by spin-selective excited state intersystem crossing, and we report up to 8% microwave-driven contrast in photoluminescence. (iii) both singlet and triplet manifolds have near-unity photoluminescence quantum yield, which is in contrast to the near-zero quantum yields in prior reports of molecular diradicals. Our results establish these tuneable open-shell organic molecules as a platform to engineer tailor-made spin-optical interfaces.

Photovoltaics (PVs) are a critical technology for curbing growing levels of anthropogenic greenhouse gas emissions, and meeting increases in future demand for low-carbon electricity. In order to fulfil ambitions for net-zero carbon dioxide equivalent (CO2eq) emissions worldwide, the global cumulative capacity of solar PVs must increase by an order of magnitude from 0.9 TWp in 2021 to 8.5 TWp by 2050 according to the International Renewable Energy Agency, which is considered to be a highly conservative estimate. In 2020, the Henry Royce Institute brought together the UK PV community to discuss the critical technological and infrastructure challenges that need to be overcome to address the vast challenges in accelerating PV deployment. Herein, we examine the key developments in the global community, especially the progress made in the field since this earlier roadmap, bringing together experts primarily from the UK across the breadth of the photovoltaics community. The focus is both on the challenges in improving the efficiency, stability and levelized cost of electricity of current technologies for utility-scale PVs, as well as the fundamental questions in novel technologies that can have a significant impact on emerging markets, such as indoor PVs, space PVs, and agrivoltaics. We discuss challenges in advanced metrology and computational tools, as well as the growing synergies between PVs and solar fuels, and offer a perspective on the environmental sustainability of the PV industry. Through this roadmap, we emphasize promising pathways forward in both the short- and long-term, and for communities working on technologies across a range of maturity levels to learn from each other., Comment: 160 pages, 21 figures

The development of luminescent organic radicals has resulted in materials with excellent optical properties for near-infrared (NIR) emission. Applications of light generation in this range span from bioimaging to surveillance. Whilst the unpaired electron arrangements of radicals enable efficient radiative transitions within the doublet-spin manifold in organic light-emitting diodes (OLEDs), their performance is limited by non-radiative pathways introduced in electroluminescence. Here, we present a host:guest design for OLEDs that exploits energy transfer with demonstration of up to 9.6% external quantum efficiency (EQE) for 800 nm emission. The tris(2,4,6-trichlorophenyl)methyl-triphenylamine (TTM-TPA) radical guest is energy-matched to the triplet state in a charge-transporting anthracene-derivative host. We show from optical spectroscopy and quantum-chemical modelling that reversible host-guest triplet-doublet energy transfer allows efficient harvesting of host triplet excitons.

The family of hybrid organic-inorganic lead-halide perovskites are the subject of intense interest for optoelectronic applications, from light-emitting diodes to photovoltaics to X-ray detectors. Due to the inert nature of most organic molecules, the inorganic sublattice generally dominates the electronic structure and therefore optoelectronic properties of perovskites. Here, we use optically and electronically active carbazole-based Cz-Ci molecules, where Ci indicates an alkylammonium chain and i indicates the number of CH2 units in the chain, varying from 3-5, as cations in the 2D perovskite structure. By investigating the photophysics and charge transport characteristics of (Cz-Ci)2PbI4, we demonstrate a tunable electronic coupling between the inorganic lead-halide and organic layers. The strongest interlayer electronic coupling was found for (Cz-C3)2PbI4, where photothermal deflection spectroscopy results remarkably demonstrate an organic-inorganic charge transfer state. Ultrafast transient absorption spectroscopy measurements demonstrate ultrafast hole transfer from the photoexcited lead-halide layer to the Cz-Ci molecules, the efficiency of which increases by varying the chain length from i=5 to i=3. The charge transfer results in long-lived carriers (10-100 ns) and quenched emission, in stark contrast with the fast (sub-ns) and efficient radiative decay of bound excitons in the more conventional 2D perovskite (PEA)2PbI4, in which phenylethylammonium (PEA) acts as an inert spacer. Electrical charge transport measurements further support enhanced interlayer coupling, showing increased out-of-plane carrier mobility from i=5 to i=3. In this study, we develop a steady state and time-dependent exciton diffusion model including singlet and triplet excitons coupled with a modified Poisson and drift-diffusion solver to explain the mechanism of hyper triplet-triplet fusion (TTF) organic light-emitting diodes (OLEDs). Using this modified simulator, we demonstrate various characteristics of OLEDs, including the J-V curve, internal quantum efficiency, transient spectrum, and electric profile. This solver can also be used to explain the mechanism of hyper-TTF-OLEDs and analyze the loss from different exciton mechanisms. Furthermore, we perform additional optimization of hyper-TTF-OLEDs that increases the internal quantum efficiency by approximately 33% (from 29% to 40%).

Molecules present a versatile platform for quantum information science, and are candidates for sensing and computation applications. Robust spin-optical interfaces are key to harnessing the quantum resources of materials. To date, carbon-based candidates have been non-luminescent, which prevents optical read-out. Here we report the first organic molecules displaying both efficient luminescence and near-unity generation yield of high-spin multiplicity excited states. This is achieved by designing an energy resonance between emissive doublet and triplet levels, here on covalently coupled tris(2,4,6-trichlorophenyl) methyl-carbazole radicals (TTM-1Cz) and anthracene. We observe the doublet photoexcitation delocalise onto the linked acene within a few picoseconds and subsequently evolve to a pure high spin state (quartet for monoradicals, quintet for biradical) of mixed radical-triplet character near 1.8 eV. These high-spin states are coherently addressable with microwaves even at 295 K, with optical read-out enabled by intersystem crossing to emissive states. Furthermore, for the biradical, on return to the ground state the previously uncorrelated radical spins either side of the anthracene show strong spin correlation. Our approach simultaneously supports a high efficiency of initialisation, spin manipulations and light-based read-out at room temperature. The integration of luminescence and high-spin states creates an organic materials platform for emerging quantum technologies.

Nanoribbons - nanometer wide strips of a two-dimensional material - are a unique system in condensed matter physics. They combine the exotic electronic structures of low-dimensional materials with an enhanced number of exposed edges, where phenomena including ultralong spin coherence times, quantum confinement and topologically protected states can emerge. An exciting prospect for this new material concept is the potential for both a tunable semiconducting electronic structure and magnetism along the nanoribbon edge. This combination of magnetism and semiconducting properties is the first step in unlocking spin-based electronics such as non-volatile transistors, a route to low-energy computing, and has thus far typically only been observed in doped semiconductor systems and/or at low temperatures. Here, we report the magnetic and semiconducting properties of phosphorene nanoribbons (PNRs). Static (SQUID) and dynamic (EPR) magnetization probes demonstrate that at room temperature, films of PNRs exhibit macroscopic magnetic properties, arising from their edge, with internal fields of ~ 250 to 800 mT. In solution, a giant magnetic anisotropy enables the alignment of PNRs at modest sub-1T fields. By leveraging this alignment effect, we discover that upon photoexcitation, energy is rapidly funneled to a dark-exciton state that is localized to the magnetic edge and coupled to a symmetry-forbidden edge phonon mode. Small molecule organic semiconductors hold great promise for efficient, printable, and flexible optoelectronic applications like solar cells and displays. However, strong excited-state quenching due to uncontrolled aggregation currently limits their performance and employability in devices. Here, we report on the self-assembly of a supramolecular pseudo-cube formed from six modified tetradentate perylene diimides (PDIs). The rigid, shape-persistent cage sets the distance and orientation of the PDI chromophores and suppresses intramolecular rotations and vibrations, leading to non-aggregated, monomer-like electronic properties in solution as well as in the solid state, in contrast to the fast fluorescence quenching in the free ligand. The stabilized excited state and electronic purity of the cage enable the observation of delayed fluorescence due to a bright excited multimer state, which acts as an excited state reservoir, due to a rare case of benign inter-chromophore interactions in the cage. Our results suggest that not only the photophysical properties of the subcomponents but the geometric structure is crucial for the overall optoelectronic properties of supramolecular systems. We show that self-assembly provides a powerful tool for retaining and controlling the electronic properties of well-studied chromophores, providing a route to bring molecular electronics applications in reach.

Bandgap tunability of lead mixed-halide perovskites makes them promising candidates for various applications in optoelectronics since they exhibit sharp optical absorption onsets despite the presence of disorder from halide alloying. Here we use localization landscape theory to reveal that the static disorder due to compositional alloying for iodide:bromide perovskite contributes at most 3 meV to the Urbach energy. Our modelling reveals that the reason for this small contribution is due to the small effective masses in perovskites, resulting in a natural length scale of around 20nm for the "effective confining potential" for electrons and holes, with short range potential fluctuations smoothed out. The increase in Urbach energy across the compositional range agrees well with our optical absorption measurements. We model systems of sizes up to 80 nm in three dimensions, allowing us to explore halide segregation, accurately reproducing the experimentally observed absorption spectra and demonstrating the scope of our method to model electronic structures on large length scales. Photosystems II and I (PSII and PSI) are the reaction centre complexes that drive the light reactions of photosynthesis. PSII performs light-driven water oxidation (quantum efficiencies and catalysis rates of up to 80% and 1000 $e^{-}\text{s}^{-1}$, respectively) and PSI further photo-energises the harvested electrons (quantum efficiencies of ~100%). The impressive performance of the light harvesting components of photosynthesis has motivated extensive biological, artificial and biohybrid approaches to re-wire photosynthesis to enable higher efficiencies and new reaction pathways, such as H2 evolution or alternative CO2 fixation. To date these approaches have focussed on charge extraction at the terminal electron quinones of PSII and terminal iron-sulfur clusters of PSI. Ideally electron extraction would be possible immediately from the photoexcited reaction centres to enable the greatest thermodynamic gains. However, this was believed to be impossible because the reaction centres are buried around 4 nm within PSII and 5 nm within PSI from the cytoplasmic face. Here, we demonstrate using in vivo ultrafast transient absorption (TA) spectroscopy that it is possible to extract electrons directly from photoexcited PSI and PSII, using both live cyanobacterial cells and isolated photosystems, with the exogenous electron mediator 2,6-dichloro1,4-benzoquinone (DCBQ). We postulate that DCBQ can oxidise peripheral chlorophyll pigments participating in highly delocalised charge transfer (CT) states after initial photoexcitation. Our results open new avenues to study and re-wire photosynthesis for bioenergy and semi-artificial photosynthesis.

Organic solar cells (OSCs) have recently shown a rapid improvement in their performance, bringing power conversion efficiencies (PCEs) closer to the point where commercial applications of the technology become viable. However, the low open-circuit voltage (Voc) of OSCs relative to their optical gap still limits PCEs to below 20%. A key factor contributing to the large Voc deficit in OSCs is non-radiative recombination to spin-triplet excitons, which is widely, but not universally, observed in blends using both fullerene and non-fullerene electron acceptors. Here, we present an experimental framework that combines time resolved optical and magnetic resonance spectroscopies to detect triplet excitons and identify their formation mechanisms. We apply our methodology to two well-studied polymer:fullerene systems, PM6:PC60BM and PTB7-Th:PC60BM, enabling us to selectively investigate distinct triplet formation pathways. In contrast to the more efficient non-fullerene acceptor systems that show only triplet states formed via non-geminate recombination, the fullerene systems also show significant triplet formation via geminate processes. We associate this with electrons trapped at the isolated fullerenes that sit within the alkyl sidechains of the donor polymers. Thus, our model study demonstrates how these complex and overlapping processes can be successfully deconvoluted to reveal the intricacies of triplet generation dynamics in OSC blends., Comment: 64 pages, 4 main-text figures

Organic light-emitting diodes (OLEDs) must be engineered to circumvent the efficiency limit imposed by the 3:1 ratio of triplet to singlet exciton formation following electron-hole capture. Here we show the spin nature of luminescent radicals such as TTM-3PCz allows direct energy harvesting from both singlet and triplet excitons through energy transfer, with subsequent rapid and efficient light emission from the doublet excitons. This is demonstrated with a model Thermally-Activated Delayed Fluorescence (TADF) organic semiconductor, 4CzIPN, where reverse intersystem crossing from triplets is characteristically slow (50% emission by 1 microsecond). The radical:TADF combination shows much faster emission via the doublet channel (80% emission by 100 ns) than the comparable TADF-only system, and sustains higher electroluminescent efficiency with increasing current density than a radical-only device. Thermally-activated delayed fluorescence (TADF) enables organic semiconductors with charge transfer (CT)-type excitons to convert dark triplet states into bright singlets via a reverse intersystem crossing (rISC) process. Here, we consider the role of the dielectric environment in a range of TADF materials with varying changes in dipole moment upon optical excitation. In a dipolar reference emitter, TXO-TPA, environmental reorganisation after excitation in both solution and doped films triggers the formation of the full CT product state. This lowers the singlet excitation energy by 0.3 eV and minimises the singlet-triplet energy gap ({\Delta}EST). Using impulsive Raman measurements, we observe the emergence of two (reactant-inactive) modes at 412 and 813 cm-1 as a vibrational fingerprint of the CT product. In contrast, the dielectric environment plays a smaller role in the electronic excitations of a less dipolar material, 4CzIPN. Quantum-chemical calculations corroborate the appearance of these new product modes in TXO-TPA and show that the dynamic environment fluctuations are large compared to {\Delta}EST. The analysis of the energy-time trajectories and the corresponding free energy functions reveals that the dielectric environment significantly reduces the activation energy for rISC, thus increasing the rISC rate by up to three orders of magnitude when compared to a vacuum environment., Comment: 67 pages, 7 main-text figures

The radiative recombination of injected charge carriers gives rise to electroluminescence (EL), a central process for light-emitting diode (LED) operation. It is often presumed in some emerging fields of optoelectronics, including perovskite and organic LEDs, that the minimum voltage required for light emission is the semiconductor bandgap divided by the elementary charge. Here we show for many classes of LEDs, including those based on metal halide perovskite, organic, chalcogenide quantum-dot and commercial III-V semiconductors, photon emission can be generally observed at record-low driving voltages of 36%-60% of their bandgaps, corresponding to a large apparent energy gain of 0.6-1.4 eV per emitted photon. Importantly, for various classes of LEDs with very different modes of charge injection and recombination (dark saturation current densities ranging from ~10^-35 to ~10^-21 mA/cm2), their EL intensity-voltage curves under low voltages exhibit similar behaviors, revealing a universal origin of ultralow-voltage device operation. Finally, we demonstrate as a proof-of-concept that perovskite LEDs can transmit data efficiently to a silicon detector at 1V, a voltage below the silicon bandgap. Our work provides a fresh insight into the operational limits of electroluminescent diodes, highlighting the significant potential of integrating low-voltage LEDs with silicon electronics for next-generation communications and computational applications.

Engineering a low singlet-triplet energy gap ({\Delta}EST) is necessary for efficient reverse intersystem crossing (rISC) in delayed fluorescence (DF) organic semiconductors, but results in a small radiative rate that limits performance in LEDs. Here, we study a model DF material, BF2, that exhibits a strong optical absorption (absorption coefficient =3.8x10^5 cm^-1) and a relatively large {\Delta}EST of 0.2 eV. In isolated BF2 molecules, intramolecular rISC is slow (260 {\mu}s), but in aggregated films, BF2 generates intermolecular CT (inter-CT) states on picosecond timescales. In contrast to the microsecond intramolecular rISC that is promoted by spin-orbit interactions in most isolated DF molecules, photoluminescence-detected magnetic resonance shows that these inter-CT states undergo rISC mediated by hyperfine interactions on a ~24 ns timescale and have an average electron-hole separation of >1.5 nm. Transfer back to the emissive singlet exciton then enables efficient DF and LED operation. The Shockley-Queisser (SQ) limit, introduced by W. Shockley and H. J. Queisser in 1961, is the most well-established fundamental efficiency limit for single-junction photovoltaic solar cells. For widely-studied semiconductors such as Si, GaAs and lead-halide perovskite, the SQ limits under standard solar illumination (1-sun) are 32.7%, 32.5% and 31% for bandgaps of 1.12 eV, 1.43 eV and 1.55 eV, respectively. Here, we propose that the fundamental efficiency limits for single-junction solar cells may be surpassed via photon confinement, substantially raising the theoretical limits to 49%, 45.2% and 42.1% for Si, GaAs and methylammonium lead iodide (MAPbI3) perovskite cells under 1-sun. Such enhancement is possible through the containment of luminescent photons within the solar cell, allowing the suppression of both non-radiative and radiative recombination losses, which were considered inevitable in the classical SQ model. Importantly, restricting photon emission from the solar cells raises the open-circuit voltage (VOC) to values approaching the semiconductor bandgaps, surpassing the theoretical VOC values predicted by the SQ model. The fill factors of the cells are expected to increase substantially, resulting in current-voltage characteristics with very-high squareness for ideal diode operation. Our work introduces a new framework for improving solar cell performance beyond the conventional limits.

Perovskite nanoplatelets (NPls) hold great promise for light-emitting applications, having achieved high photoluminescence quantum efficiencies (PLQEs) approaching unity in the blue wavelength range, where other metal-halide perovskites have typically been ineffective. However, the external quantum efficiency (EQE) of blue-emitting NPl light-emitting diodes (LEDs) have only reached 0.12%, with typical values well below 0.1%. In this work, we show that the performance of NPl LEDs is primarily hindered by a poor electronic interface between the emitter and hole-injector. Through Kelvin Probe and X-ray photoemission spectroscopy measurements, we reveal that the NPls have remarkably deep ionization potentials (>=6.5 eV), leading to large barriers for hole injection, as well as substantial non-radiative decay at the interface between the emitter and hole-injector. We find that an effective way to reduce these non-radiative losses is by using poly(triarylamine) interlayers. This results in an increase in the EQE of our blue LEDs emitting at 464 nm wavelength to 0.3%. We find that our results can be generalized to thicker sky-blue-emitting NPls, where we increase the EQE to 0.55% using the poly(triarylamine) interlayer. Our work also identifies the key challenges for further efficiency increases.

The power conversion efficiencies (PCEs) of organic solar cells (OSCs) using non-fullerene acceptors (NFAs) have now reached 18%. However, this is still lower than inorganic solar cells, for which PCEs >20% are commonplace. A key reason is that OSCs still show low open-circuit voltages (Voc) relative to their optical band gaps, attributed to non-radiative recombination. For OSCs to compete with inorganics in efficiency, all non-radiative loss pathways must be identified and where possible, removed. Here, we show that in most NFA OSCs, the majority of charge recombination at open-circuit proceeds via formation of non-emissive NFA triplet excitons (T1); in the benchmark PM6:Y6 blend, this fraction reaches 90%, contributing 60 mV to the reduction of Voc. We develop a new design to prevent recombination via this non-radiative channel through the engineering of significant hybridisation between the NFA T1 and the spin-triplet charge transfer exciton (3CTE). We model that the rate of the back charge transfer from 3CTE to T1 can be reduced by an order of magnitude, allowing re-dissociation of the 3CTE. We then demonstrate NFA systems where T1 formation is suppressed. Efficient energy transport is highly desirable for organic semiconductor (OSC) devices such as photovoltaics, photodetectors, and photocatalytic systems. However, photo-generated excitons in OSC films mostly occupy highly localized states over their lifetime. Energy transport is hence thought to be mainly mediated by the site-to-site hopping of localized excitons, limiting exciton diffusion coefficients to below ~10^{-2} cm^2/s with corresponding diffusion lengths below ~50 nm. Here, using ultrafast optical microscopy combined with non-adiabatic molecular dynamics simulations, we present evidence for a new highly-efficient energy transport regime: transient exciton delocalization, where energy exchange with vibrational modes allows excitons to temporarily re-access spatially extended states under equilibrium conditions. In films of highly-ordered poly(3-hexylthiophene) nanofibers, prepared using living crystallization-driven self-assembly, we show that this enables exciton diffusion constants up to 1.1+-0.1 cm^2/s and diffusion lengths of 300+-50 nm. Our results reveal the dynamic interplay between localized and delocalized exciton configurations at equilibrium conditions, calling for a re-evaluation of the basic picture of exciton dynamics. This establishes new design rules to engineer efficient energy transport in OSC films, which will enable new devices architectures not based on restrictive bulk heterojunctions., Comment: 61 pages, 4 main figures

Nanocrystals based on metal-halide perovskites offer a promising material platform for highly efficient lighting. Using transient optical spectroscopy, we study excitation recombination dynamics in manganese-doped CsPb(Cl,Br)3 perovskite nanocrystals. We find an increase in the intrinsic excitonic radiative recombination rate upon doping, which is typically a challenging material property to tailor. Supported by ab initio calculations, we can attribute the enhanced emission rates to increased exciton localization through lattice periodicity breaking from Mn dopants, which increases exciton effective masses and overlap of electron and hole wavefunctions and thus the oscillator strength. Our report of a fundamental strategy for improving luminescence efficiencies in perovskite nanocrystals will be valuable for maximizing efficiencies in light-emitting applications.

Bulk-heterojunction (BHJ) non-fullerene organic solar cells prepared from sequentially deposited donor and acceptor layers (sq-BHJ) have recently been promising to be highly efficient, environmentally friendly, and compatible with large area and roll-to-toll fabrication. However, the related photophysics at donor-acceptor interface and the vertical heterogeneity of donor-acceptor distribution, critical for exciton dissociation and device performance, are largely unexplored. Herein, steady-state and time-resolved optical and electrical techniques are employed to characterize the interfacial trap states. Correlation with the luminescent efficiency of interfacial states and its non-radiative recombination, interfacial trap states are characterized to be about 50% more populated in the sq-BHJ than as-cast BHJ (c-BHJ), which probably limits the device voltage output. Cross-sectional energy-dispersive X-ray spectroscopy and ultraviolet photoemission spectroscopy depth profiling directly vizualize the donor-acceptor vertical stratification with a precision of 1-2 nm. From the proposed "needle" model, the high exciton dissociation efficiency is rationalized. Our study highlights the promise of sequential deposition to fabricate efficient solar cells, and points towards improving the voltage output and overall device performance via eliminating interfacial trap states.

Energy level diagrams in organic electronic devices play a crucial role in device performance and interpretation of device physics. In the case of organic solar cells, it has become routine to estimate the photovoltaic gap of the donor:acceptor blend using the energy values measured on the individual blend components, resulting in a poor agreement with the corresponding open-circuit voltage of the device. To address this issue, we developed a method that allows a direct visualisation of the vertical energetic landscape in the blend, obtained by combining ultraviolet photoemission spectroscopy and argon cluster etching. We investigate both model and high-performance photovoltaic systems and demonstrate that the resulting photovoltaic gaps are in close agreement with the measured CT energies and open-circuit voltages. Furthermore, we show that this method allows us to study the evolution of the energetic landscape upon environmental degradation, critically important for understanding degradation mechanisms and development of mitigation strategies.

Halide double perovskites have gained significant attention, owing to their composition of low-toxicity elements, stability in air and long charge-carrier lifetimes. However, most double perovskites, including Cs2AgBiBr6, have wide bandgaps, which limit photo conversion efficiencies. The bandgap can be reduced through hallowing with Sb3+, but Sb-rich alloys are difficult to synthesise due to the high formation energy of Cs2AgSbBr6, which itself has a wide bandgap. We develop a solution-based route to synthesis phase-pure Cs2Ag(SbxBi1-x)Br6 thin films, with the mixing parameter x continuous varying over the entire composition range. We reveal that the mixed alloys (x between 0.5 and 0.9) demonstrate smaller bandgaps (as low as 2.08 eV) than the pure Sb- (2.18 eV) and Bi-based (2.25 eV) compounds, with strong deviation from Vegard's law. Through in-depth computations, we propose that bandgap lowering arises from the Type II band alignment between Cs2AgBiBr6 and Cs2AgSbBr6. The energy mismatch between the Bi and Sb s and p atomic orbitals, coupled with their non-linear mixing, results in the alloys adopting a smaller bandgap than the pure compounds. Organic semiconductors exhibit properties of individual molecules and extended crystals simultaneously. The strongly bound excitons they host are typically described in the molecular limit, but excitons can delocalize over many molecules, raising the question of how important the extended crystalline nature is. Using accurate Green's function based methods for the electronic structure and non-perturbative finite difference methods for exciton-vibration coupling, we describe exciton interactions with molecular and crystal degrees of freedom concurrently. We find that the degree of exciton delocalization controls these interactions, with thermally activated crystal phonons predominantly coupling to delocalized states, and molecular quantum fluctuations predominantly coupling to localized states. Based on this picture, we quantitatively predict and interpret the temperature and pressure dependence of excitonic peaks in the acene series of organic semiconductors, which we confirm experimentally, and we develop a simple experimental protocol for probing exciton delocalization. Overall, we provide a unified picture of exciton delocalization and vibrational effects in organic semiconductors, reconciling the complementary views of finite molecular clusters and periodic molecular solids.

Organic solar cells (OSCs) based on non-fullerene acceptors can show high charge generation yields despite near-zero donor-acceptor energy offsets to drive charge separation and overcome the mutual Coulomb attraction between electron and hole. Here we use time-resolved optical spectroscopy to show that free charges in these systems are generated by thermally activated dissociation of interfacial charge-transfer excitons (CTEs) that occurs over hundreds of picoseconds at room temperature, three orders of magnitude slower than comparable fullerene-based systems. Upon free electron-hole encounters at later times, CTEs and emissive excitons are regenerated, thus setting up an equilibrium between excitons, CTEs and free charges. This endothermic charge separation process enables these systems to operate close to quasi-thermodynamic equilibrium conditions with no requirement for energy offsets to drive charge separation and achieve greatly suppressed non-radiative recombination., Comment: 30 pages, 4 figures

Luminescent colloidal CdSe nanorings are a new type of semiconductor structure that have attracted interest due to the potential for unique physics arising from their non-trivial toroidal shape. However, the exciton properties and dynamics of these materials with complex topology are not yet well understood. Here, we use a combination of femtosecond vibrational spectroscopy, temperature-resolved photoluminescence (PL), and single particle measurements to study these materials. We find that on transformation of CdSe nanoplatelets to nanorings, by perforating the center of platelets, the emission lifetime decreases and the emission spectrum broadens due to ensemble variations in the ring size and thickness. The reduced PL quantum yield of nanorings (~10%) compared to platelets (~30%) is attributed to an enhanced coupling between: (i) excitons and CdSe LO-phonons at 200 cm-1 and (ii) negatively charged selenium-rich traps which give nanorings a high surface charge (~-50 mV). Population of these weakly emissive trap sites dominates the emission properties with an increased trap emission at low temperatures relative to excitonic emission. Our results provide a detailed picture of the nature of excitons in nanorings and the influence of phonons and surface charge in explaining the broad shape of the PL spectrum and the origin of PL quantum yield losses. Furthermore, they suggest that the excitonic properties of nanorings are not solely a consequence of the toroidal shape but are also a result of traps introduced by puncturing the platelet center., Comment: 38 pages, 10 figures

Electroluminescence (EL) of colloidal nanocrystals promises a new generation of high-performance and solution-processable light-emitting diodes (LEDs). The operation of nanocrystal-based LEDs relies on the recombination of electrically-generated excitons. However, a fundamental question, i.e, how excitons are electrically generated in individual nanocrystals, remains unanswered. Here, we reveal a molecular mechanism of sequential electron-hole injection for the exciton generation in nanocrystal-based EL devices. To decipher the corresponding elementary processes, we develop electrically-pumped single-nanocrystal spectroscopy. While hole injection into neutral quantum dots (QDs) is generally-considered to be inefficient, we find that the intermediate negatively-charged state of QD triggers confinement-enhanced Coulomb interactions, which simultaneously accelerate hole injection and hinder excessive electron injection. In-situ/operando spectroscopy on state-of-the-art QD-LEDs demonstrate that exciton generation at the ensemble level is consistent with the charge-confinement-enabled sequential electron-hole injection mechanism revealed at the single-nanocrystal level. Our findings provide a universal mechanism for enhancing charge balance in nanocrystal-based EL devices.

The formation of exciton-polaritons allows the transport of energy over hundreds of nanometres at velocities up to 10^6 m s^-1 in organic semiconductors films in the absence of external cavity structures.

Perovskite-based optoelectronic devices have gained significant attention due to their remarkable performance and low processing cost, particularly for solar cells. However, for perovskite light-emitting diodes (LEDs), non-radiative charge carrier recombination has limited electroluminescence (EL) efficiency. Here we demonstrate perovskite-polymer bulk heterostructure LEDs exhibiting record-high external quantum efficiencies (EQEs) exceeding 20%, and an EL half-life of 46 hours under continuous operation. This performance is achieved with an emissive layer comprising quasi-2D and 3D perovskites and an insulating polymer. Transient optical spectroscopy reveals that photogenerated excitations at the quasi-2D perovskite component migrate to lower-energy sites within 1 ps. The dominant component of the photoluminescence (PL) is primarily bimolecular and is characteristic of the 3D regions. From PL quantum efficiency and transient kinetics of the emissive layer with/without charge-transport contacts, we find non-radiative recombination pathways to be effectively eliminated. Light outcoupling from planar LEDs, as used in OLED displays, generally limits EQE to 20-30%, and we model our reported EL efficiency of over 20% in the forward direction to indicate the internal quantum efficiency (IQE) to be close to 100%. Together with the low drive voltages needed to achieve useful photon fluxes (2-3 V for 0.1-1 mA/cm2), these results establish that perovskite-based LEDs have significant potential for light-emission applications.

From organic electronics to biological systems, understanding the role of intermolecular interactions between spin pairs is a key challenge. Here we show how such pairs can be selectively addressed with combined spin and optical sensitivity. We demonstrate this for bound pairs of spin-triplet excitations formed by singlet fission, with direct applicability across a wide range of synthetic and biological systems. We show that the site-sensitivity of exchange coupling allows distinct triplet pairs to be resonantly addressed at different magnetic fields, tuning them between optically bright singlet (S=0) and dark triplet, quintet (S=1,2) configurations: this induces narrow holes in a broad optical emission spectrum, uncovering exchange-specific luminescence. Using fields up to 60 T, we identify three distinct triplet-pair sites, with exchange couplings varying over an order of magnitude (0.3-5 meV), each with its own luminescence spectrum, coexisting in a single material. Halide perovskites are promising semiconductors for inexpensive, high-performance optoelectronics. Despite a remarkable defect tolerance compared to conventional semiconductors, perovskite thin films still show substantial microscale heterogeneity in key properties such as luminescence efficiency and device performance. This behavior has been attributed to spatial fluctuations in the population of sub-bandgap electronic states that act as trap-mediated non-radiative recombination sites. However, the origin of the variations, trap states and extent of the defect tolerance remains a topic of debate, and a precise understanding is critical to the rational design of defect management strategies. By combining scanning X-ray diffraction beamlines at two different synchrotrons with high-resolution transmission electron microscopy, we reveal levels of heterogeneity on the ten-micrometer scale (super-grains) and even ten-nanometer scale (sub-grain domains). We find that local strain is associated with enhanced defect concentrations, and correlations between the local structure and time-resolved photoluminescence reveal that these strain-related defects are the cause of non-radiative recombination. We reveal a direct connection between defect concentrations and non-radiative losses, as well as complex heterogeneity across multiple length scales, shedding new light on the presence and influence of structural defects in halide perovskites.

We explore the degradation behaviour under continuous illumination and direct oxygen exposure of inverted unencapsulated formamidinium(FA)0.83Cs0.17Pb(I0.8Br0.2)3, CH3NH3PbI3, and CH3NH3PbI3-xClx perovskite solar cells. We continuously test the devices in-situ and in-operando with current-voltage sweeps, transient photocurrent, and transient photovoltage measurements, and find that degradation in the CH3NH3PbI3-xClx solar cells due to oxygen exposure occurs over shorter timescales than FA0.83Cs0.17Pb(I0.8Br0.2)3 mixed-cation devices. We attribute these oxygen-induced losses in the power conversion efficiencies to the formation of electron traps within the perovskite photoactive layer. Our results highlight that the formamidinium-caesium mixed-cation perovskites are much less sensitive to oxygen-induced degradation than the methylammonium-based perovskite cells, and that further improvements in perovskite solar cell stability should focus on the mitigation of trap generation during ageing.

Metal halide perovskites are attracting tremendous interest for a variety of optoelectronic applications. The ability to tune the perovskite bandgap by tweaking the chemical compositions opens up new applications as coloured emitters and as components of tandem photovoltaics. Nevertheless, non-radiative losses are still limiting performance, with luminescence yields in state-of-the-art perovskite solar cells still far from 100% under solar illumination conditions. Furthermore, in mixed halide perovskite systems designed for continuous bandgap tunability (bandgaps ~1.7-1.9 eV), photo-induced ion segregation leads to bandgap instabilities. Here, we substantially mitigate both non-radiative losses and photo-induced ion migration in perovskite structures by decorating the surfaces and grain boundaries with passivating potassium-halide interlayers. We demonstrate external photo-luminescence quantum yields of 66%, translating to internal yields exceeding 95%. The high luminescence yields are achieved while maintaining high mobilities over 40 cm2V-1s-1, giving the elusive combination of both high luminescence and excellent charge transport. We find that the external luminescence yield when interfaced with electrodes in a solar cell device stack, a quantity that must be maximized to approach the efficiency limits, remains as high as 15%, indicating very clean interfaces. We also demonstrate the inhibition of photo-induced ion migration processes across a wide range of mixed halide perovskite bandgaps that otherwise show bandgap instabilities. We validate these results in full operating solar cells, highlighting the importance of stabilising luminescence in device structures. Our work represents a critical breakthrough in the construction of tunable halide perovskite films and interfaces that can approach the efficiency limits in tandem solar cells and coloured LEDs.

In photovoltaics (PVs) and artificial photosynthetic systems based on excitons, the question of how energy must be lost in overcoming the Coulomb barrier, converting excitons to free charges, is fundamental, as it determines the achievable open-circuit voltage or over-potential1-3. Here, using transient and steady-state optical spectroscopy we study a model system, pentacene/C60, where pentacene triplet excitons are dissociated to form charge transfer states, which we show to be degenerate in energy with the triplet excitons. We directly track these charge transfer states undergoing efficient long-range separation to free charges within 50 ps, despite a significant Coulomb barrier that we measure to be 220 meV. We model this endothermic charge separation to be driven by entropic gain. Our results demonstrate that endothermic charge separation can proceed rapidly with near unity efficiency, overcoming Coulomb barriers greater than 200meV via a gain in entropy, thus minimising loss of open-circuit voltage or over-potential. In the pentacene/C60 system this leads here to an effective VOC loss of only 400meV with respect to the energy of the triplet exciton. This suggests that excitonic photoconversion systems have no fundamental disadvantage compared to systems which generate free changes directly upon photoexcitation.

Singlet exciton fission (SF), the conversion of one spin-singlet exciton (S1) into two spin-triplet excitons (T1), could provide a means to overcome the Shockley-Queisser limit in photovoltaics. SF as measured by the decay of S1 has been shown to occur efficiently and independently of temperature even when the energy of S1 is as much as 200 meV less than 2T1. Here, we study films of TIPS-tetracene using transient optical spectroscopy and show that the initial rise of the triplet pair state (TT) occurs in 300 fs, matched by rapid loss of S1 stimulated emission, and that this process is mediated by the strong coupling of electronic and vibrational degrees of freedom. This is followed by a slower 10 ps morphology-dependent phase of S1 decay and TT growth. We observe the TT to be thermally dissociated on 10-100 ns timescales to form free triplets. This provides a model for "temperature independent", efficient TT formation and thermally activated TT separation.

In band-like semiconductors, charge carriers form a thermal energy distribution rapidly after optical excitation. In hybrid lead halide perovskites, the cooling of such thermal carrier distributions occurs on timescales of ~300 fs via carrier-phonon scattering. However, the initial build-up of the thermal distribution proved difficult to resolve with pump-probe techniques due to the requirement of high resolution, both in time and in energy. Here, we use two-dimensional electronic spectroscopy with sub-10fs resolution to directly observe the carrier interactions that lead to the formation of a thermal carrier distribution. We find that thermalization occurs dominantly via carrier-carrier scattering under the investigated fluences and report the dependence of carrier scattering rates on excess energy and carrier density. We extract characteristic carrier thermalization times from below 10 fs to 85 fs. These values allow for mobilities of up to 500 cm^2 V^(-1) s^(-1) at carrier densities lower than 2x10^19 cm^(-3) and limit the time for carrier extraction in hot carrier solar cells.

The efficiency of an organic light-emitting diode (OLED) is fundamentally governed by the spin of recombining electron-hole pairs (singlet and triplet excitons), since triplets cannot usually emit light. The singlet-triplet energy gap, a key factor for efficient utilization of triplets, is normally positive. Here we show that in a family of materials with amide donor and carbene acceptor moieties linked by a metal, this energy gap for singlet and triplet excitons with charge-transfer character can be tuned from positive to negative values via the rotation of donor and acceptor about the metal-amide bond. When the gap is close to zero, facile intersystem crossing is possible, enabling efficient emission from singlet excitons. We demonstrate solution-processed LEDs with exceptionally high quantum efficiencies (near-100% internal and >27% external quantum efficiencies), and current and power efficiencies (87 cd/A and 75 lm/W) comparable to, or exceeding, those of state-of-the-art vacuum-processed OLEDs and quantum dot LEDs.

Scanning nanofocus X-ray diffraction (nXRD) performed at a synchrotron is used for the first time to simultaneously probe the morphology and the structural properties of spin-coated CH3NH3PbI3 (MAPI) perovskite films for photovoltaic devices. MAPI films are spin-coated on a Si/SiO2/PEDOT:PSS substrate held at different temperatures during the deposition in order to tune the perovskite film coverage, and then investigated by nXRD, scanning electron microscopy (SEM) and grazing incidence wide angle X-ray scatter-ing (GI-WAXS). The advantages of nXRD over SEM and GI-WAXS are dis-cussed. A method to visualize, selectively isolate, and structurally charac-terize single perovskite grains buried within a complex, polycrystalline film is developed. The results of nXRD measurements are correlated with solar cell device measurements, and it is shown that spin-coating the perovskite precursor solution at elevated temperatures leads to improved surface coverage and enhanced solar cell performance.

Silicon solar cells dominate the solar cell market with record lab efficiencies reaching almost 26%. However, after 60 years of research, this efficiency saturated close to the theoretical limit for silicon, and radically new approaches are needed to further improve the efficiency. Here we present parallel-connected tandem solar cells based on down-conversion via singlet fission. This design allows raising the theoretical power conversion efficiency limit to 45% with far superior stability under changing sunlight conditions in comparison to traditional series tandems. We experimentally demonstrate a silicon/pentacene parallel tandem solar cell that exceeds 100% external quantum efficiency at the main absorption peak of pentacene, showing efficient photocurrent addition and proving this design as a realistic prospect for real-world applications.

The electron-hole pair created via photon absorption in organic photoconversion systems must overcome the Coulomb attraction to achieve long-range charge separation. We show that this process is facilitated through the formation of excited, delocalized band states. In our experiments on organic photovoltaic cells, these states were accessed for a short time (<1ps) via IR optical excitation of electron-hole pairs bound at the heterojunction. Atomistic modelling showed that the IR photons promote bound charge pairs to delocalised band states, similar to those formed just after singlet exciton dissociation, which indicates that such states act as the gateway for charge separation. Our results suggest that charge separation in efficient organic photoconversion systems, occurs through hot-state charge delocalisation rather than energy-gradient-driven intermolecular hopping.

The formation of bound electron-hole pairs, also called charge-transfer (CT) states, in organic-based photovoltaic devices is one of the dominant loss mechanisms hindering performance. While CT state dynamics following electron transfer from donor to acceptor have been widely studied, there is not much known about the dynamics of bound CT states produced by hole transfer from the acceptor to the donor. In this letter, we compare the dynamics of CT states formed in the different charge-transfer pathways in a range of model systems. We show that the nature and dynamics of the generated CT states are similar in the case of electron and hole transfer. However the yield of bound and free charges is observed to be strongly dependent on the HOMOD-HOMOA and LUMOD-LUMOA energy differences of the material system. We propose a qualitative model in which the effects of static disorder and sampling of states during the relaxation determine the probability of accessing CT states favourable for charge separation.

In photovoltaic diodes recombination of photogenerated electrons and holes is a major loss process. Biological light harvesting complexes (LHCs) prevent recombination via the use of cascade structures, which lead to spatial separation of charge-carriers1. In contrast, the nanoscale morphology and high charge densities in organic photovoltaic cells (OPVs) give a high rate of electron-hole encounters, which should result in the formation of spin triplet excitons, as in organic light emitting diodes (OLEDs)2. OPVs would have poor quantum efficiencies if every encounter lead to recombination, but state-of-the-art OPVs demonstrate near-unity quantum efficiency3. Here we show that this suppression of recombination can be engineered through the interplay between spin, energetics and delocalisation of electronic excitations in organic semiconductors. We use time-resolved spectroscopy to study a series of model, high efficiency polymer-fullerene systems in which the lowest lying molecular triplet exciton (T1) (on the polymer) lies below the intermolecular charge transfer state (CT). We observe the formation of T1 states following bimolecular recombination, indicating that encounters of spin-uncorrelated electrons and holes generate CT states with both spin singlet (1CT) and spin triplet (3CT) characters. We show that triplet exciton formation can be the major loss mechanism in OPVs. However, we find that even when energetically favoured, the relaxation of 3CT to T1 can be strongly suppressed, via control over wavefunction delocalisation, allowing for the dissociation of 3CT back to free changes, thereby reducing recombination and enhancing device performance. Our results point towards new design rules for artificial photo-conversion systems, enabling the suppression of electron-hole recombination, and also for OLEDs, avoiding the formation of triplet states and enhancing fluorescence efficiency., Comment: 4 FIgures

We analyze the linear absorption spectrum of regioregular poly(3-hexylthiophene) films spun from a variety of solvents to probe directly the film microstructure and how it depends on processing conditions. We estimate the exciton bandwidth and the percentage of the film composed of aggregates quantitatively using a weakly interacting H-aggregate model. We address the role of excitonic coulping on the nature of photoexcitations in the conjugated polymer regioregular poly(3-hexylthiophene). By means of temperature-dependent absorption and photoluminescence spectroscopy, we show that optical emission is overwhelmingly dominated by weakly coupled H-aggregates. The relative absorbance of the 0-0 and 0-1 vibronic peaks provides a powerfully simple means to extract the magnitude of the intermolecular coupling energy, approximately 5 and 30 meV for films spun from isodurene and chloroform solutions respectively., Comment: 10 pages, 4 figures, published in Phys. Control of the band-edge offsets at heterojunctions between organic semiconductors allows efficient operation of either photovoltaic or light-emitting diodes. We investigate systems where the exciton is marginally stable against charge separation, and show via E-field-dependent time-resolved photoluminescence spectroscopy that excitons that have undergone charge separation at a heterojunction can be efficiently regenerated. This is because the charge transfer produces a geminate electron-hole pair (separation 2.2-3.1nm) which may collapse into an exciplex and then endothermically (E=100-200meV) back-transfer towards the exciton., Comment: 10 pages, 4 figures.
