Search

The exploration of topological quantum materials and topological phase transitions is at the forefront of modern condensed matter physics. Quasi-one-dimensional (quasi-1D) bismuth iodide Bi4I4 exhibits versatile topological phases of matter including weak topological insulator (WTI) and higher-order topological insulator (HOTI) phases with high tunability in response to external parameters. In this work, performing laser-based angle-resolved photoemission spectroscopy with submicron spatial resolution (micro-ARPES), we comprehensively investigate the fine electronic structure and topological phase transition of Bi4I4. Our examination of the low-temperature {\alpha}-phase reveals the presence of an energy gap on the (100) surface, providing spectroscopic evidence for the HOTI phase. Conversely, the high-temperature {\beta}-Bi4I4 harbors a gapless Dirac fermion on the (100) surface alongside gapped states on the (001) surface, thereby establishing a WTI phase. By tracking the temperature evolution of the (100) surface states, we unveil a thermal hysteresis of the surface gap in line with the {\alpha}-{\beta} structural phase transition. Our findings elucidate the topological properties of Bi4I4 and directly evidence a temperature-induced topological phase transition from WTI to HOTI, which paves the way to potential applications based on the room-temperature topological phase transition in the quasi-1D topological quantum material.

The discovery of pressurized superconductivity at 80 K in La3Ni2O7 officially brings nickelates into the family of high-temperature superconductors, which gives rise to not only new insights but also mysteries in the strongly correlated superconductivity. More recently, the sibling compound La4Ni3O10 was also shown to be superconducting below about 25 K under pressure, further boosting the popularity of nickelates in the Ruddlesden-Popper phase. In this study, combining high-resolution angle-resolved photoemission spectroscopy and ab initio calculation, we systematically investigate the electronic structures of La4Ni3O10 at ambient pressure. We reveal a high resemblance of La4Ni3O10 with La3Ni2O7 in the orbital-dependent fermiology and electronic structure, suggesting a similar electronic correlation between the two compounds. The temperature-dependent measurements imply an orbital-dependent energy gap related to the density-wave transition in La4Ni3O10. By comparing the theoretical pressure-dependent electronic structure, clues about the superconducting high-pressure phase can be deduced from the ambient measurements, providing crucial information for deciphering the unconventional superconductivity in nickelates.

Bulk Acoustic Wave (BAW) filters find applications in radio frequency (RF) communication systems for Wi-Fi, 3G, 4G, and 5G networks. In the beyond-5G (potential 6G) era, high frequency bands (>8 GHz) are expected to require resonators with high-quality factor (Q) and electromechanical coupling (k_t^2) to form filters with low insertion loss and high selectivity. However, both the Q and k_t^2 of resonator devices formed in traditional uniform polarization piezoelectric films of aluminum nitride (AlN) and aluminum scandium nitride (AlScN) decrease when scaled beyond 8 GHz. In this work, we utilized 4-layer AlScN periodically poled piezoelectric films (P3F) to construct high frequency (~17-18 GHz) resonators and filters. The resonator performance is studied over a range of device geometries, with the best resonator achieving a k_t^2 of 11.8% and a Q_p of 236.6 at the parallel resonance frequency (fp) of 17.9 GHz. These resulting figures of merit are ((FoM)_1=(k_t^2 Q)_p and (FoM_2=f_p(FoM)_1x10^-9) ) 27.9 and 500 respectively. These and the k_t^2 are significantly higher than previously reported An/AlScN-based resonators operating at similar frequencies. Fabricated 3-element and 6-element filters formed from these resonators demonstrated low insertion losses (IL) of 1.86 dB and 3.25 dB, and -3 dB bandwidths (BW) of 680 MHz (fractional BW of 3.9%) and 590 MHz (fractional BW of 3.3%) at ~17.4 GHz center frequency. The 3-element and 6-element filters achieved excellent linearity with in-band input third-order intercept point (IIP3) values of +36 dBm and +40 dBm, respectively, which are significantly higher than previously reported acoustic filters operating at similar frequencies.

In addition to the pressurized high-temperature superconductivity, bilayer and trilayer nickelate superconductors Lan+1NinO3n+1 (n = 2 and 3) exhibit many intriguing properties at ambient pressure, such as orbital-dependent electronic correlation, non-Fermi liquid behavior, and density-wave transitions. Here, using ultrafast reflectivity measurement, we observe a drastic difference between the ultrafast dynamics of the bilayer and trilayer nickelates at ambient pressure. Firstly, we observe a coherent phonon mode in La4Ni3O10 involving the collective vibration of La, Ni, and O atoms, which is absent in La3Ni2O7. Secondly, the temperature-dependent relaxation time diverges near the density-wave transition temperature of La4Ni3O10, in drastic contrast to kink-like changes in La3Ni2O7. Moreover, we estimate the electron-phonon coupling constants to be 0.05~0.07 and 0.12~0.16 for La3Ni2O7 and La4Ni3O10, respectively, suggesting a relatively minor role of electron-phonon coupling in the electronic properties of Lan+1NinO3n+1. Our work not only sheds light on the relevant microscopic interaction but also establishes a foundation for further studying the interplay between superconductivity and density-wave transitions in nickelate superconductors.

Gyrokinetic and kinetic-MHD simulations are performed for the fishbone instability in the DIII-D discharge #178631, chosen for validation of first-principles simulations to predict the energetic particle (EP) transport in an ITER prefusion baseline scenario. Fishbone modes are found to generate zonal flows, which dominate the fishbone saturation. The underlying mechanisms of the two-way fishbone-zonal flows nonlinear interplay are discussed in details. Numerical and analytical analyses identify the fishbone-induced EP redistribution as the dominant generation mechanism for zonal flows. The zonal flows modify the nonlinear dynamics of phase space zonal structures, which reduces the amount of EPs able to resonate with the mode, leading to an early fishbone saturation. Simulation results including zonal flows agree quantitatively with DIII-D experimental measurements of the fishbone saturation amplitude and EP transport, supporting this novel saturation mechanism by self-generated zonal flows. Moreover, the wave-particle mode-locking mechanism is shown to determine quantitatively the fishbone frequency down-chirping, as evident in GTC simulation results in agreement with predictions from analytical theory. Finally, the fishbone-induced zonal flows are possibly responsible for the formation of an ion-ITB in the DIII-D discharge. Based on the low EP transport and the large zonal flow shearing rates associated with the fishbone instability in gyrokinetic simulations of the ITER scenario, it is conjectured that high performance scenarios could be designed in ITER burning plasmas through fishbone-induced ITBs.

This document summarizes the efforts of the EMMI Rapid Reaction Task Force on "Suppression and (re)generation of quarkonium in heavy-ion collisions at the LHC", centered around their 2019 and 2022 meetings. It provides a review of existing experimental results and theoretical approaches, including lattice QCD calculations and semiclassical and quantum approaches for the dynamical evolution of quarkonia in the quark-gluon plasma as probed in high-energy heavy-ion collisions. The key ingredients of the transport models are itemized to facilitate comparisons of calculated quantities such as reaction rates, binding energies, and nuclear modification factors. A diagnostic assessment of the various results is attempted and coupled with an outlook for the future., Comment: 54 pages, 19 figures

The aim of this study is to analyze the effect of the neutral beam injector (NBI) operation regime on the saturation phase of the Alfven Eigenmodes (AEs) in DIII-D plasma. The analysis is done using the linear and nonlinear versions of the gyro-fluid code FAR3d. A set of parametric analyses are performed modifying the nonlinear simulation EP \b{eta} (NBI injection power), EP energy (NBI voltage) and the radial location of the EP density profile gradient (NBI radial deposition). The analysis indicates a transition from the soft (local plasma relaxation) to the hard MHD (global plasma relaxation) limit if the simulation EP \b{eta} >= 0.02, leading to bursting MHD activity caused by radial AEs overlapping. MHD bursts cause an enhancement of the EP transport showing ballistic-like features as avalanche-like events. Simulations in the soft MHD limit show an increment of the EP density gradient as the EP \b{eta} increases. On the other hand, there is a gradient upper limit in the hard MHD limit, consistent with the critical-gradient behavior. AEs induce shear flows and zonal current leading to the deformation of the flux surfaces and the safety factor profile, respectively, particularly strong for the simulation in the hard MHD limit. Simulations in the hard MHD regime show a decrease of the AE frequency in the saturation phase; this is caused by the destabilization of a transitional mode between a 9/3-10/3 TAE and a 9/3 RSAE that may explain the AE frequency down-sweeping observed in some DIII-D discharges. Reducing the EP energy in the nonlinear simulations leads to a weakening of the plasma perturbation. On the other hand, increasing the EP energy causes the opposite effect. Nonlinear simulations of off-axis NBI profiles indicate a lower plasma perturbation as the EP density gradient is located further away from the magnetic axis.

The notion of topological insulators (TIs), characterized by an insulating bulk and conducting topological surface states, can be extended to higher-order topological insulators (HOTIs) hosting gapless modes localized at the boundaries of two or more dimensions lower than the insulating bulk1-5. In this work, by performing high-resolution angle-resolved photoemission spectroscopy (ARPES) measurements with submicron spatial and spin resolutions, we systematically investigate the electronic structure and spin texture of quasi-one-dimensional (1D) HOTI candidate Bi4Br4. In contrast to the bulk-state-dominant spectra on the (001) surface, we observe gapped surface states on the (100) surface, whose dispersion and spin-polarization agree well with our ab initio calculations. Moreover, we reveal in-gap states connecting the surface valence and conduction bands, which is an explicit signature of the existence of hinge states inside the (100) surface gap. Our findings provide compelling evidence for the HOTI phase of Bi4Br4. The identification of the higher-order topological phase will lay the promising prospect of applications based on 1D spin-momentum locked current in electronic and spintronic devices.

The flux ratios of gravitationally lensed quasars provide a powerful probe of the nature of dark matter. Importantly, these ratios are sensitive to small-scale structure, irrespective of the presence of baryons. This sensitivity may allow us to study the halo mass function even below the scales where galaxies form observable stars. For accurate measurements, it is essential that the quasar's light is emitted from a physical region of the quasar with an angular scale of milli-arcseconds or larger; this minimizes microlensing effects by stars within the deflector. The warm dust region of quasars fits this criterion, as it has parsec-size physical scales and dominates the spectral energy distribution of quasars at wavelengths greater than 10$\mu$m. The JWST Mid-Infrared Instrument (MIRI) is adept at detecting redshifted light in this wavelength range, offering both the spatial resolution and sensitivity required for accurate gravitational lensing flux ratio measurements. Here, we introduce our survey designed to measure the warm dust flux ratios of 31 lensed quasars. We discuss the flux-ratio measurement technique and present results for the first target, DES J0405-3308. We find that we can measure the quasar warm dust flux ratios with 3% precision. Our simulations suggest that this precision makes it feasible to detect the presence of 10$^7$ M$_\odot$ dark matter halos at cosmological distances. Such halos are expected to be completely dark in Cold Dark Matter models.

TaTe$_4$, a metallic charge-density wave (CDW) material discovered decades ago, has attracted renewed attention due to its rich interesting properties such as pressure-induced superconductivity and candidate non-trivial topological phase. Here, using high-resolution angle-resolved photoemission spectroscopy and ab-initio calculation, we systematically investigate the electronic structure of TaTe$_4$. At 26 K, we observe a CDW gap as large as 290 meV, which persists up to 500 K. The CDW-modulated band structure shows a complex reconstruction that closely correlates with the lattice distortion. Inside the CDW gap, there exist highly dispersive energy bands contributing to the remnant Fermi surface and metallic behavior in the CDW state. Interestingly, our ab-initio calculation reveals that the large CDW gap mainly opens in the electronic states with out-of-plane orbital components, while the in-gap metallic states originate from in-plane orbitals, suggesting an orbital texture that couples with the CDW order. There has been a long-standing debate about the mechanism of the unusual superconductivity in alkali-intercalated fulleride superconductors. In this work, using high-resolution angle-resolved photoemission spectroscopy, we systematically investigate the electronic structures of superconducting K3C60 thin films. We observe a dispersive energy band crossing the Fermi level with an occupied bandwidth of about 130 meV. The measured band structure shows prominent quasiparticle kinks and a replica band involving high-energy Jahn-Teller active Hg(8) phonon mode, reflecting strong electron-phonon coupling in the system. The electron-phonon coupling constant is estimated to be about 1.2, which dominates the quasiparticle mass renormalization. Moreover, we observe an isotropic nodeless superconducting gap beyond the mean-field estimation. Both the large electron-phonon coupling constant and large reduced superconducting gap suggest a strong-coupling superconductivity in K3C60, while the electronic correlation effect is indicated by the observation of a waterfall-like band dispersion and the small bandwidth compared with the effective Coulomb interaction. EuTe4 is a newly-discovered van der Waals material exhibiting a novel charge-density wave (CDW) with a large thermal hysteresis in the resistivity and CDW gap. In this work, we systematically study the electronic structure and transport properties of EuTe4 using high-resolution angle-resolved photoemission spectroscopy (ARPES), magnetoresistance measurements, and scanning tunneling microscopy (STM). We observe a CDW gap of about 200 meV at low temperatures that persists up to 400 K, suggesting that the CDW transition occurs at a much higher temperature. We observe a large thermal hysteretic behavior of the ARPES intensity near the Fermi level, consistent with the resistivity measurement. The hysteresis in the resistivity measurement does not change under a magnetic field up to 7 T, excluding the thermal magnetic hysteresis mechanism. Instead, the surface topography measured with STM shows surface domains with different CDW trimerization directions, which may be important for the thermal hysteretic behavior of EuTe4. Interestingly, we observe a large negative magnetoresistance at low temperatures that can be associated with the canting of magnetically ordered Eu spins. Our work shed light on the understanding of magnetic, transport, and electronic properties of EuTe4.

Angle-resolved photoemission spectroscopy with sub-micrometer spatial resolution ({\mu}-ARPES), has become a powerful tool for studying quantum materials. To achieve sub-micrometer or even nanometer-scale spatial resolution, it is important to focus the incident light beam (usually from the synchrotron radiation) using X-ray optics such as the zone plate or ellipsoidal capillary mirrors. Recently, we developed a laser-based {\mu}-ARPES with spin-resolution (LMS-ARPES). The 177 nm laser beam is achieved by frequency doubling a 355 nm beam using a KBBF crystal and subsequently focused using an optical lens with a focal length of about 16 mm. By characterizing the focused spot size using different methods and performing spatial-scanning photoemission measurement, we confirm the sub-micron spatial resolution of the system. Compared with the {\mu}-ARPES facilities based on synchrotron radiation, our LMS-ARPES system is not only more economical and convenient but also with higher photon flux (> 5E13 photons/s), thus enabling the high-resolution and high-statistics measurements. Moreover, the system is equipped with a two-dimensional spin detector based on exchange scattering at a surface-passivated iron film grown on a W(100) substrate. We investigate the spin structure of the prototype topological insulator Bi2Se3 and reveal a high spin-polarization rate, confirming its spin-momentum locking property. This lab-based LMS-ARPES will be a powerful research tool for studying the local fine electronic structures of different condensed matter systems, including topological quantum materials, mesoscopic materials and structures, and phase-separated materials., Comment: To appear in RSI

Gyrokinetic simulations of the fishbone instability in DIII-D tokamak plasmas find that self-generated zonal flows can dominate the nonlinear saturation by preventing coherent structures from persisting or drifting in the energetic particle phase space when the mode frequency down-chirps. Results from the simulation with zonal flows agree quantitatively, for the first time, with experimental measurements of the fishbone saturation amplitude and energetic particle transport. Moreover, the fishbone-induced zonal flows are likely responsible for the formation of an internal transport barrier that was observed after fishbone bursts in this DIII-D experiment. Although the concept of Luttinger liquid (LL) that describes a one-dimensional (1D) interacting fermion system collapses in higher dimensions, it has been proposed to be closely related to many mysteries including the normal state of cuprate superconductor, unconventional metal, and quantum criticality. Therefore, the generalization of LL model to higher dimensions has attracted substantial research attention. Here we systematically investigate the electronic structure of a quasi-2D compound {\eta}-Mo4O11 using high-resolution angle-resolved photoemission spectroscopy and ab-initio calculation. Remarkably, we reveal a prototypical LL behavior originating from the crossing quasi-1D chain arrays hidden in the quasi-2D crystal structure. Our results suggest that {\eta}-Mo4O11 materializes the long sought-after crossed LL phase, where the orthogonal orbital components significantly reduce the coupling between intersecting quasi-1D chains and therefore maintain the essential properties of LL. Our finding not only presents a realization of 2D LL, but also provides a new angle to understand non-Fermi liquid behaviors in other 2D and 3D quantum materials.

The interaction between localized f and itinerant conduction electrons is crucial in the electronic properties of heavy fermion and valence fluctuating compounds. Using high-resolution angle-resolved photoemission spectroscopy, we systematically investigate the electronic structure of the archetypical valence fluctuating compound EuNi2P2 that hosts multiple f electrons. At low temperatures, we reveal the hybridization between Eu 4f and Ni 3d states, which contributes to the electron mass enhancement, consistent with the periodic Anderson model. With increasing temperature, interestingly, we observe opposite temperature evolution of electron spectral function above and below the Kondo coherence temperature near 110 K, which is in contrast to the monotonic valence change and beyond the expectation of the periodic Anderson model. We argue that both f-d hybridization and correlation are imperative in the electronic properties of EuNi2P2. Our results shed light on the understanding of novel properties, such as heavy fermion behaviors and valence fluctuation, of rare-earth transition-metal intermetallic compounds with multiple f electrons.

An Imaging Neutral Particle Analyser (INPA) diagnostic has been designed for the ASDEX Upgrade (AUG) tokamak. The AUG INPA diagnostic will measure fast neutrals escaping the plasma after CX reactions. The neutrals will be ionised by a 20 nm carbon foil and deflected towards a scintillator by the local magnetic field. The use of a neutral beam injector (NBI) as active source of neutrals will provide radially resolved measurements while the use of a scintillator as active component will allow us to cover the whole plasma along the NBI line with unprecedented phase-space resolution ($ < $ 12 keV and 8 cm) and fast temporal response (up to 1 kHz with the high resolution acquisition system and above 100 kHz with the low resolution one); making it suitable to study localised fast-ions redistributions in phase-space.

Crystal geometry can greatly influence the emergent properties of quantum materials. As an example, the kagome lattice is an ideal platform to study the rich interplay between topology, magnetism, and electronic correlation. In this work, combining high-resolution angle-resolved photoemission spectroscopy and ab-initio calculation, we systematically investigate the electronic structure of XMn6Sn6 (X = Dy, Tb, Gd, Y) family compounds. We observe the Dirac fermion and the flat band arising from the magnetic kagome lattice of Mn atoms. Interestingly, the flat band locates in the same energy region in all compounds studied, regardless of their different magnetic ground states and 4f electronic configurations. These observations suggest a robust Mn magnetic kagome lattice across the XMn6Sn6 family, thus providing an ideal platform for the search and investigation on new emergent phenomena in magnetic topological materials., Comment: PRB accepted

The superconducting infinite-layer nickelate family has risen as a promising platform for revealing the mechanism of high-temperature superconductivity. However, its challenging material synthesis has obscured effort in understanding the nature of its ground state and low-lying excitations, which is a prerequisite for identifying the origin of the Cooper pairing in high-temperature superconductors. In particular, the superconducting gap symmetry of nickelates has hardly been investigated and remains controversial. Here, we report the pairing symmetry of the infinite-layer nickelates determined by London penetration depth measurements in neodymium-based (Nd,Sr)NiO$_2$ and lanthanide-based (La,Ca)NiO$_2$ thin films of high crystallinity. A rare-earth-specific order parameter is observed. While the lanthanide nickelates follow dirty line-node behaviour, the neodymium-counterpart exhibits nodeless order parameters such as the $(d+is)$ wave. In contrast to the cuprates, our results suggest that the superconducting order parameter in nickelates is beyond a single $d_(x^2-y^2 )$-wave gap. Furthermore, the superfluid density shows a long tail near the superconducting transition temperature which is consistent with the emergence of a two-dimensional to three-dimensional crossover in the superconducting state. Microwave loss in niobium metallic structures used for superconducting quantum circuits is limited by a native surface oxide layer formed over a timescale of minutes when exposed to an ambient environment. In this work, we show that nitrogen plasma treatment forms a niobium nitride layer at the metal-air interface which prevents such oxidation. X-ray photoelectron spectroscopy confirms the doping of nitrogen more than 5 nm into the surface and a suppressed oxygen presence. This passivation remains stable after aging for 15 days in an ambient environment. Cryogenic microwave characterization shows an average filling factor adjusted two-level-system loss tangent $\rm{F\delta_{TLS}}$ of $(2.9\pm0.5)\cdot10^{-7}$ for resonators with 3 $\rm{\mu}$m center strip and $(1.0\pm0.3)\cdot10^{-7}$ for 20 $\rm{\mu}$m center strip, exceeding the performance of unpassivated samples by a factor of four., Comment: 7 pages, 5 figures

(Quasi-)one-dimensional systems exhibit various fascinating properties such as Luttinger liquid behavior, Peierls transition, novel topological phases, and the accommodation of unique quasiparticles (e.g., spinon, holon, and soliton, etc.). Here we study molybdenum blue bronze A0.3MoO3 (A = K, Rb), a canonical quasi-one-dimensional charge-density-wave material, using laser-based angle-resolved photoemission spectroscopy. Our experiment suggests that the normal phase of A0.3MoO3 is a prototypical Luttinger liquid, from which the charge-density-wave emerges with decreasing temperature. Prominently, we observe strong renormalizations of band dispersions, which is recognized as the spectral function of Holstein polaron derived from band-selective electron-phonon coupling in the system. We argue that the strong electron-phonon coupling plays a dominant role in electronic properties and the charge-density-wave transition in blue bronzes. We characterize low-loss electron-beam evaporated niobium thin films deposited under ultra-high vacuum conditions. Slow deposition yields films with a high superconducting transition temperature ($9.20 \pm 0.06 \rm ~K$) as well as a residual resistivity ratio of $4.8$. We fabricate the films into coplanar waveguide resonators to extract the intrinsic loss due to the presence of two-level-system fluctuators using microwave measurements. For a coplanar waveguide resonator gap of $2~\mu \rm m$, the films exhibit filling-factor-adjusted two-level-system loss tangents as low as $1.5 \times 10^{-7}$ with single-photon regime internal quality factors in excess of one million after removing native surface oxides of the niobium., Comment: 5 pages, 3 figures

A dedicated device to fully determine the four-dimensional beam matrix, called ROSE (ROtating System for Emittance measurements) was successfully commissioned. Results obtained with 83Kr13+ at 1.4 MeV/u are reported in Phys. Rev. Accel. Beams 19, 072802 (2016). Coupled moments were determined with an accuracy of about 10%, which is sufficiently low to reliably determine a lattice which could decouple the beam. However, the remaining uncertainty on the corresponding eigen emittances was still considerable high. The present paper reports on improvement of the evaluation procedure which lowers the inaccuracy of measured eigen emittances significantly to the percent level. The method is based on trimming directly measured data within their intrinsic measurement resolution such that the finally resulting quantity is determined with high precision.

Systematic variation of the pre-disruption core electron temperature (Te) from 1 to 12 keV using an internal transport barrier scenario reveals a dramatic increase in the production of seed runaway electrons (REs), ultimately accessing near-complete conversion of the pre-disruption current into sub-MeV RE current. Injected Ar pellets are observed to ablate more intensely and promptly as Te rises. At high Te, the observed ablation exceeds predictions from published thermal ablation models. Simultaneously, the thermal quench (TQ) is observed to significantly shorten with increasing Te -- a surprising result. While the reason for the shorter TQ is not yet understood, candidate mechanisms include: insufficiently accurate thermal ablation models, enhanced ablation driven by the seed RE population, or significant parallel heat transport along stochastic fields. Kinetic modeling that self-consistently treats the plasma cooling via radiation, the induced electric field, and the formation of the seed RE is performed. Including the combined effect of the inherent dependence of hot-tail RE seeding on Te together with the shortened TQ, modeling recovers the progression towards near-complete conversion of the pre-disruption current to RE current as Te rises. Measurement of the HXR spectrum during the early current quench (CQ) reveals a trend of decreasing energy with pre-disruption Te. At the very highest Te ($\approx$ 12 keV), $\approx$ 100% conversion of the thermal current to runaway current is found. The energy of this peculiar RE beam is inferred to be sub-MeV as it emits vanishingly few MeV hard X-rays (HXRs). These measurements demonstrate novel TQ dynamics as Te is varied and illustrate the limitations of treating the RE seed formation problem without considering the inter-related dependencies of the pellet ablation, radiative energy loss, and resultant variations of the TQ duration.

The DRAO Synthesis Telescope (ST) is a forefront telescope for imaging large-scale neutral hydrogen and polarized radio continuum emission at arcminute resolution. Equipped for observations at 1420 and 408 MHz, the ST completed the Canadian Galactic Plane Survey, providing pioneering measurements of arcminute-scale structure in HI emission and self-absorption and of the diffuse polarized emission, using a fine grid of Rotation Measures to chart the large-scale Galactic magnetic field, and advancing the knowledge of the Galactic rotation curve. In this paper we describe a plan for renewal of the Synthesis Telescope that will create a forefront scientific instrument, a testbed for new radio astronomy technologies, and a training ground for the next generation of Canadian radio astronomers and radio telescope engineers. The renewed telescope will operate across the entire range 400 to 1800 MHz. Collaborations between DRAO and university partners have already demonstrated a novel feed antenna to cover this range, low-noise amplifiers, and a new GPU-based correlator of bandwidth 400 MHz. The renewed ST will provide excellent sensitivity to extended HI, covering the Galactic disk and halo, spectro-polarimetry with unprecedented resolution in angle and in Faraday depth, the ability to search for OH masers in all four 18-cm lines simultaneously, and sensitive recombination-line observations stacked over as many as forty transitions. As a testbed the renewed ST will evaluate low-cost digital clocking and sampling techniques of wide significance for the ngVLA, SKA, and other future telescopes, and a prototype of the digital correlator developed at DRAO for SKA-mid., Comment: A White Paper submitted to the Long Range Plan 2020 for Canadian astronomy

We systematically investigate the scaling property of mesons (pions and kaons) and baryons (protons, ${\rm \Lambda}$, ${\rm \Xi}$ and ${\rm \Omega}$) transverse momentum ($p_{\rm T}$) spectra at different centrality classes (0-5$\%$, 5-10$\%$, 10-20$\%$, 20-40$\%$, 40-60$\%$, 60-80$\%$ and 80-100$\%$) in proton-lead collisions with center of mass energy per nucleon pair 5.02 TeV. In the low $p_{\rm T}$ region with $p_{\rm{T}}\leq $ 3.9 (3.1, 2.5, 2.7, 2.4 and 2.8) GeV/c, a universal scaling independent of the centrality is observed in the pion (kaon, proton, ${\rm \Lambda}$, ${\rm \Xi}$ and ${\rm \Omega}$) spectra when a dilatation, $p_{\rm T}\rightarrow p_{\rm T}/K$, is applied. Here $K$ is a scaling parameter depending on the centrality class. We find that the rates at which ln$K$ changes with the logarithmic value of the average value of the number of participating nucleons, ln$\langle N_{\rm{part}}\rangle$, are stronger for baryons than those for mesons. In the high $p_{\rm T}$ region, there is a deviation from the scaling. The more peripheral the collisions are, the more obvious the violation of the scaling is. In the framework of the colour string percolation (CSP) model, we show that mesons and baryons are generated from the decay of clusters formed by strings overlapping in the transverse plane with the same size dispersion but with different mean size. The mean size of clusters for baryons is smaller than that of mesons. For the same hadrons at different centrality classes, the mean size of clusters decreases with the increase of centrality. The fragmentation functions for cluster decay are different for different hadrons, while they are universal for the same hadrons at different centrality classes. The universal scaling of the meson and baryon spectra in the low $p_{\rm T}$ region can be quantitatively understood with the CSP model at the same time., Comment: 17 pages, 8 figs.,6 tables. Recent observations of neutron-star properties, in particular the recent detection of gravitational waves emitted from binary neutron stars, GW 170817, open the way to put strong constraints on nuclear interactions. In this paper, we review the state of the art in calculating the equation of state of strongly interacting matter from first principle calculations starting from microscopic interactions among nucleons. In this work, we study matter in the cores of proto-neutron stars, focusing on the impact of their composition on the stellar structure. We begin by examining the effects of finite temperature (through a fixed entropy per baryon) and lepton fraction on purely nucleonic matter by making use of the DSH model . We then turn our attention to a relativistic mean-field model containing exotic degrees of freedom, the Chiral Mean Field (CMF) model, again, under the conditions of finite temperature and trapped neutrinos. In the latter, since both hyperons and quarks are found in the cores of large-mass stars, their interplay and the possibility of mixtures of phases is taken into account and analyzed. Finally, we discuss how stellar rotation can affect our results.

The future opportunities for high-density QCD studies with ion and proton beams at the LHC are presented. Four major scientific goals are identified: the characterisation of the macroscopic long wavelength Quark-Gluon Plasma (QGP) properties with unprecedented precision, the investigation of the microscopic parton dynamics underlying QGP properties, the development of a unified picture of particle production and QCD dynamics from small (pp) to large (nucleus--nucleus) systems, the exploration of parton densities in nuclei in a broad ($x$, $Q^2$) kinematic range and the search for the possible onset of parton saturation. In order to address these scientific goals, high-luminosity Pb-Pb and p-Pb programmes are considered as priorities for Runs 3 and 4, complemented by high-multiplicity studies in pp collisions and a short run with oxygen ions. High-luminosity runs with intermediate-mass nuclei, for example Ar or Kr, are considered as an appealing case for extending the heavy-ion programme at the LHC beyond Run 4. The ${}^{12}\mathrm{C}(\alpha,\gamma){}^{16}\mathrm{O}$ reaction plays a key role in the evolution of stars with masses of $M >$ 0.55 $M_\odot$. The cross-section of the ${}^{12}\mathrm{C}(\alpha,\gamma){}^{16}\mathrm{O}$ reaction within the Gamow window ($E_\textrm{c.m.}$ = 300 keV, $T_\textrm9$ = 0.2) is extremely small (about $10^{-17}$ barn), which makes the direct measurement in a ground-based laboratory with existing techniques unfeasible. Up until now, the cross-sections at lower energies can only be extrapolated from the data at higher energies. However, two subthreshold resonances, located at $E_x$ = 7.117 MeV and $E_x$ = 6.917 MeV, make this extrapolation more complicated. In this work, the 6.917 MeV subthreshold resonance in the ${}^{12}\mathrm{C}(\alpha,\gamma){}^{16}\mathrm{O}$ reaction was investigated via the ${}^{12}\mathrm{C}({}^{11}\mathrm{B},{}^{7}\mathrm{Li}){}^{16}\mathrm{O}$ reaction. The experiment was performed using the Q3D magnetic spectrograph at the HI-13 tandem accelerator. We measured the angular distribution of the ${}^{12}\mathrm{C}({}^{11}\mathrm{B},{}^{7}\mathrm{Li}){}^{16}\mathrm{O}$ transfer reaction leading to the 6.917 MeV state. Based on the FRDWBA analysis, we derived the asymptotic normalization coefficient (ANC) of the 6.917 MeV level in $^{16}$O to be (1.10 $\pm$ 0.29) $\times 10^{10}$ fm$^{-1}$, with which the reduced $\alpha$ width was computed to be $18.0\pm4.7$ keV at the channel radius of 6.5 fm. Finally, we calculated the astrophysical $S_{E2}(300)$ factor of the ground-state transitions to be 46.2 $\pm$ 7.7 keV b. The result for the astrophysical $S_{E2}(300)$ factor confirms the values obtained in various direct and indirect measurements and presents an independent examination of the most important data in nuclear astrophysics., Comment: submitted to Physical Review C

With the experimental data collected by the ALICE collaboration in Pb-Pb collisions at a center-of-mass energy per nucleon pair 2.76 TeV for six different centralities (0-5$\%$, 5-10$\%$, 10-20$\%$, 20-40$\%$, 40-60$\%$ and 60-80$\%$), we investigate the scaling property of the pion, kaon and proton transverse momentum ($p_{\rm{T}}$) spectra at these centralities. We show that in the low $p_{\rm{T}}$ region with $p_{\rm T} \leq$ 2.75 (3.10 and 2.35) GeV/c the pion (kaon and proton) spectra exhibit a scaling behaviour independent of the centrality of the collisions. This scaling behaviour arises when these spectra are presented in terms of a suitable variable, $z=p_{\rm{T}}/K$. The scaling parameter $K$ is determined by the quality factor method and is parameterized by $a \langle N_{\rm{part}}\rangle^{b}$, where $\langle N_{\rm{part}}\rangle$ is the average value of the number of participating nucleons, $a$ and $b$ are free parameters, $b$ characterizes the rate at which $\textrm{ln} K$ changes with $\textrm{ln} \langle N_{\rm{part}}\rangle$. The values of $b$ for pions and kaons are consistent within uncertainties, while they are smaller than that for protons. In the high $p_{\rm{T}}$ region, due to the suppression of the spectra, a violation of the proposed scaling is observed going from central to peripheral collisions. The more peripheral the collisions are, the more clearly violated the proposed scaling becomes. In the framework of the colour string percolation model, we argue that the pions, kaons and protons originate from the fragmentation of clusters which are formed by strings overlapping and the cluster's fragmentation functions are different for different hadrons. The scaling behaviour of the pion, kaon and proton spectra in the low $p_{\rm T}$ region can be simultaneously explained by the colour string percolation model in a qualitative way., Comment: 15 pages, 6 figures, accepted by Nucl. We use variable-temperature x-ray thermal diffuse scattering and inelastic scattering to investigate the lattice dynamics in single crystals of multiferroic CaMn7O12 which undergo a series of orbital and magnetic transitions at low temperatures. Upon approaching the charge and orbital ordering temperature To=250 K from above, we observe intense diffuse scattering features and a pronounced optical phonon softening centered around the superstructure reflections of the incommensurately modulated structure. The phonon anomaly appears well above To and continuously increases upon cooling, following a canonical power-law temperature dependence that confirms the transition at To to be of second order and related to a soft-phonon lattice instability. Microscopic mechanisms for the incommensurate charge and orbital ordering based on competing interactions and on momentum dependent electron-phonon coupling could both account for the observed extended momentum width of the phonon softening. Knowledge of the transverse four-dimensional beam rms-parameters is essential for applications that involve lattice elements that couple the two transverse degrees of freedom (planes). Of special interest is the removal of inter-plane correlations to reduce the projected emittances. A dedicated ROtating System for Emittance measurements (ROSE) has been proposed, developed, and successfully commissioned to fully determine the four-dimensional beam matrix. This device has been used at the High Charge injector (HLI) at GSI using a beam line which is composed of a skew quadrupole triplet, a normal quadrupole doublet, and ROSE. The Daya Bay experiment was the first to report simultaneous measurements of reactor antineutrinos at multiple baselines leading to the discovery of $\bar{\nu}_e$ oscillations over km-baselines. Subsequent data has provided the world's most precise measurement of $\rm{sin}^22\theta_{13}$ and the effective mass splitting $\Delta m_{ee}^2$. The experiment is located in Daya Bay, China where the cluster of six nuclear reactors is among the world's most prolific sources of electron antineutrinos. Multiple antineutrino detectors are deployed in three underground water pools at different distances from the reactor cores to search for deviations in the antineutrino rate and energy spectrum due to neutrino mixing. Instrumented with photomultiplier tubes (PMTs), the water pools serve as shielding against natural radioactivity from the surrounding rock and provide efficient muon tagging. Arrays of resistive plate chambers over the top of each pool provide additional muon detection. The antineutrino detectors were specifically designed for measurements of the antineutrino flux with minimal systematic uncertainty. Relative detector efficiencies between the near and far detectors are known to better than 0.2%. With the unblinding of the final two detectors' baselines and target masses, a complete description and comparison of the eight antineutrino detectors can now be presented. A search for light sterile neutrino mixing was performed with the first 217 days of data from the Daya Bay Reactor Antineutrino Experiment. The experiment's unique configuration of multiple baselines from six 2.9~GW$_{\rm th}$ nuclear reactors to six antineutrino detectors deployed in two near (effective baselines 512~m and 561~m) and one far (1579~m) underground experimental halls makes it possible to test for oscillations to a fourth (sterile) neutrino in the $10^{\rm -3}~{\rm eV}^{2} < |\Delta m_{41}^{2}| < 0.3~{\rm eV}^{2}$ range. The relative spectral distortion due to electron antineutrino disappearance was found to be consistent with that of the three-flavor oscillation model. The derived limits on $\sin^22\theta_{14}$ cover the $10^{-3}~{\rm eV}^{2} \lesssim |\Delta m^{2}_{41}| \lesssim 0.1~{\rm eV}^{2}$ region, which was largely unexplored., Comment: 7 pages, 4 figures

A new measurement of the $\theta_{13}$ mixing angle has been obtained at the Daya Bay Reactor Neutrino Experiment via the detection of inverse beta decays tagged by neutron capture on hydrogen. The antineutrino events for hydrogen capture are distinct from those for gadolinium capture with largely different systematic uncertainties, allowing a determination independent of the gadolinium-capture result and an improvement on the precision of $\theta_{13}$ measurement. With a 217-day antineutrino data set obtained with six antineutrino detectors and from six 2.9 GW$_{th}$ reactors, the rate deficit observed at the far hall is interpreted as $\sin^22\theta_{13}=0.083\pm0.018$ in the three-flavor oscillation model. When combined with the gadolinium-capture result from Daya Bay, we obtain $\sin^22\theta_{13}=0.089\pm0.008$ as the final result for the six-antineutrino-detector configuration of the Daya Bay experiment.

All the 16F levels are unbound by proton emission. To date the four low-lying 16F levels below 1 MeV have been experimentally identified with well established spin-parity values and excitation energies with an accuracy of 4 - 6 keV. However, there are still considerable discrepancies for their level widths. The present work aims to explore these level widths through an independent method. The angular distributions of the 15N(7Li, 6Li)16N reaction leading to the first four states in 16N were measured using a high-precision Q3D magnetic spectrograph. The neutron spectroscopic factors and the asymptotic normalization coefficients for these states in 16N were then derived based on distorted wave Born approximation analysis. The proton widths of the four low-lying resonant states in 16F were obtained according to charge symmetry of strong interaction., Comment: 14 pages, 6 figures, 4 tables

Fluorine is a key element for nucleosynthetic studies since it is extremely sensitive to the physical conditions within stars. The astrophysical site to produce fluorine is suggested to be asymptotic giant branch (AGB) stars. In these stars the 15N(n, g)16N reaction could affect the abundance of fluorine by competing with 15N(a, g)19F. The 15N(n, g)16N reaction rate depends directly on the neutron spectroscopic factors of the low-lying states in 16N. The angular distributions of the 15N(7Li, 6Li)16N reaction populating the ground state and the first three excited states in 16N are measured using a Q3D magnetic spectrograph and are used to derive the spectroscopic factors of these states based on distorted wave Born approximation (DWBA) analysis. The spectroscopic factors of these four states are extracted to be 0.96+-0.09, 0.69+-0.09, 0.84+-0.08 and 0.65+-0.08, respectively. Based on the new spectroscopic factors we derive the 15N(n,g)16N reaction rate. The accuracy and precision of the spectroscopic factors are enhanced due to the first application of high-precision magnetic spectrograph for resolving the closely-spaced 16N levels which can not be achieved in most recent measurement. The present result demonstrates that two levels corresponding to neutron transfers to the 2s1/2 orbit in 16N are not so good single-particle levels although 15N is a closed neutron-shell nucleus. This finding is contrary to the shell model expectation. A measurement of the energy dependence of antineutrino disappearance at the Daya Bay Reactor Neutrino Experiment is reported. Electron antineutrinos ($\overline{\nu}_{e}$) from six $2.9$ GW$_{\rm th}$ reactors were detected with six detectors deployed in two near (effective baselines 512 m and 561 m) and one far (1579 m) underground experimental halls. Using 217 days of data, 41589 (203809 and 92912) antineutrino candidates were detected in the far hall (near halls). An improved measurement of the oscillation amplitude $\sin^{2}2\theta_{13} = 0.090^{+0.008}_{-0.009} $ and the first direct measurement of the $\overline{\nu}_{e}$ mass-squared difference $|\Delta m^{2}_{ee}|= (2.59_{-0.20}^{+0.19}) \times 10^{-3}\ {\rm eV}^2 $ is obtained using the observed $\overline{\nu}_{e}$ rates and energy spectra in a three-neutrino framework. This value of $|\Delta m^{2}_{ee}|$ is consistent with $|\Delta m^{2}_{\mu\mu}|$ measured by muon neutrino disappearance, supporting the three-flavor oscillation model., Comment: As accepted for publication by Phys. We report an improved measurement of the neutrino mixing angle $\theta_{13}$ from the Daya Bay Reactor Neutrino Experiment. We exclude a zero value for $\sin^22\theta_{13}$ with a significance of 7.7 standard deviations. Electron antineutrinos from six reactors of 2.9 GW$_{\rm th}$ were detected in six antineutrino detectors deployed in two near (flux-weighted baselines of 470 m and 576 m) and one far (1648 m) underground experimental halls. Using 139 days of data, 28909 (205308) electron antineutrino candidates were detected at the far hall (near halls). The ratio of the observed to the expected number of antineutrinos assuming no oscillations at the far hall is $0.944\pm 0.007({\rm stat.}) \pm 0.003({\rm syst.})$. An analysis of the relative rates in six detectors finds $\sin^22\theta_{13}=0.089\pm 0.010({\rm stat.})\pm0.005({\rm syst.})$ in a three-neutrino framework., Comment: 21 pages, 24 figures. We report on an estimate of \alpha_s, renormalised in the MSbar scheme at the tau and Z^0 mass scales, by means of lattice QCD. Our major improvement compared to previous lattice calculations is that, for the first time, no perturbative treatment at the charm threshold has been required since we have used statistical samples of gluon fields built by incorporating the vacuum polarisation effects of u/d, s and c sea quarks. Extracting \alpha_s in the Taylor scheme from the lattice measurement of the ghost-ghost-gluon vertex, we obtain \alpha_s^{MSbar}(m^2_Z)=0.1200(14) and \alpha_s^{MSbar}(m^2_tau)=0.339(13)., Comment: Proceedings of the "QCD 12" conference in Montpellier

The Daya Bay Reactor Neutrino Experiment has measured a non-zero value for the neutrino mixing angle $\theta_{13}$ with a significance of 5.2 standard deviations. Antineutrinos from six 2.9 GW$_{\rm th}$ reactors were detected in six antineutrino detectors deployed in two near (flux-weighted baseline 470 m and 576 m) and one far (1648 m) underground experimental halls. With a 43,000 ton-GW_{\rm th}-day livetime exposure in 55 days, 10416 (80376) electron antineutrino candidates were detected at the far hall (near halls). The Daya Bay Reactor Neutrino Experiment is designed to determine precisely the neutrino mixing angle $\theta_{13}$ with a sensitivity better than 0.01 in the parameter sin$^22\theta_{13}$ at the 90% confidence level. To achieve this goal, the collaboration will build eight functionally identical antineutrino detectors. The first two detectors have been constructed, installed and commissioned in Experimental Hall 1, with steady data-taking beginning September 23, 2011. This letter reports on the first computation, from data obtained in lattice QCD with $u,d,s$ and $c$ quarks in the sea, of the running strong coupling via the ghost-gluon coupling renormalized in the MOM Taylor scheme. We provide with estimates of $\ams(m_\tau^2)$ and $\ams(m_Z^2)$ in very good agreement with experimental results. We present preliminary results of the non-perturbative computation of the RI-MOM renormalisation constants in a mass-independent scheme for the action with Iwasaki glue and four dynamical Wilson quarks employed by ETMC. Our project requires dedicated gauge ensembles with four degenerate sea quark flavours at three lattice spacings and at several values of the standard and twisted quark mass parameters. We study RI/MOM renormalization constants of bilinear quark operators for $N_f=4$ and the strong coupling constant for $N_f=2+1+1$ using Wilson twisted-mass fermions. We use the "egalitarian" method to remove H(4) hypercubic artifacts non-perturbatively, which enables us to study physical quantities in a wide range of momenta. This paper is a first report on the determination of $\Lambda_{\msbar}$ from lattice simulations with 2+1+1 twisted-mass dynamical flavours {\it via} the computation of the ghost-gluon coupling renormalized in the MOM Taylor scheme. We show this approach allows a very good control of the lattice artefacts and confirm the picture from previous works with quenched and ${\rm N}_f$=2 twisted-mass field configurations which prove the necessity to include non-perturbative power corrections in the description of the running. We provide with an estimate of $\Lambda_{\msbar}$ in very good agreement with experimental results. To our knowledge it is the first calculation with a dynamical charm quark which makes the running up to $\alpha_s(M_Z)$ much safer., Comment: 11 pages, 3 figures, 3 tables (new version accepted to be published in Phys. We present the current status of the MILC collaboration's calculations of the properties of the light pseudoscalar meson sector. We use asqtad staggered ensembles with 2+1 dynamical flavors down to $a \approx 0.045$ fm and light quark mass down to 0.05 $m_s$. Here we describe fits to the data using chiral forms from SU(3) chiral perturbation theory, including all staggered taste violations at NLO and the continuum NNLO chiral logarithms. In the light pseudoscalar sector, we study rooted staggered chiral perturbation theory in the two-flavor case. The pion mass and decay constant are calculated through NLO for a partially-quenched theory. In the limit where the strange quark mass is large compared to the light quark masses and the taste splittings, we show that the SU(2) staggered chiral theory emerges from the SU(3) staggered chiral theory, as expected. Explicit relations between SU(2) and SU(3) low energy constants and taste-violating parameters are given. Strongly correlated electron liquids which occur in quantizing magnetic fields reveal a cornucopia of fascinating quantum phenomena such as fractionally charged quasiparticles, anyonic statistics, topological order, and many others. Probing these effects in GaAs-based systems, where electron interactions are relatively weak, requires sub-kelvin temperatures and record-high electron mobilities, rendering some of the most interesting states too fragile and difficult to access. This prompted a quest for new high-mobility systems with stronger electron interactions. Recently, fractional-quantized Hall effect was observed in suspended graphene (SG), a free-standing monolayer of carbon, where it was found to persist up to T=10 K. The best results in those experiments were obtained on micron-size flakes, on which only two-terminal transport measurements could be performed. Here we pose and solve the problem of extracting transport coefficients of a fractional quantum Hall state from the two-terminal conductance. We develop a method, based on the conformal invariance of two-dimensional magnetotransport, and illustrate its use by analyzing the measurements on SG. From the temperature dependence of longitudinal conductivity, extracted from the measured two-terminal conductance, we estimate the energy gap of quasiparticle excitations in the fractional-quantized nu=1/3 state. The gap is found to be significantly larger than in GaAs-based structures, signaling much stronger electron interactions in suspended graphene. Our approach provides a new tool for the studies of quantum transport in suspended graphene and other nanoscale systems.
