The Multi-Order Solar Extreme Ultraviolet Spectrograph (MOSES) sounding rocket was launched from White Sands Missile Range on 2006 February 8th, to capture images of the Sun in the He ii 303.8 Å emission line. MOSES is a slitless spectrograph that forms images in multiple spectral orders simultaneously using a concave diffraction grating in an effort to measure line profiles over a wide field of view from a single exposure. Early work on MOSES data showed evidence of solar features composed of neither He ii 303.8 Å nor the nearby Si xi 303.3 Å spectral lines. We have built a forward model that uses cotemporal EIT images and the Chianti atomic database to fit synthetic images with known spectra to the MOSES data in order to quantify this additional spectral content. Our fit reveals a host of dim lines that alone are insignificant but combined contribute a comparable intensity to MOSES images as Si xi 303.3 Å. In total, lines other than He ii 303.8 Å and Si xi 303.3 Å contribute approximately 10% of the total intensity in the MOSES zero order image. This additional content, if not properly accounted for, could significantly impact the analysis of MOSES and similar slitless spectrograph data, especially those using a zero-order (undispersed) image. More broadly, this serves as a reminder that multilayer EUV imagers are sensitive to a host of weak contaminant lines.

This chapter on higher education returns after a 6-year absence during which time a separate yearbook on higher education law was published. Because not all higher education law cases reported during 1981 could be included, the author summarized only the more significant cases that seemed to best illustrate the legal parameters regarding the specific topic. The cases are organized under governance and finance, liability, employees, collective bargaining, and students. Cases involving employees concern First Amendment rights, alleged discrimination, elimination of tenure, reduction of salary, and confidentiality of faculty evaluations. Cases involving students include freedom of expression, interpretation of statutes, rules and regulations, organizations, financial matters, admissions, athletics, religious matters, and handicapped students. Educational consumerism continues to be the major focus of litigation involving students. Disputes over admissions practices, grades, academic terminations, and financial aid comprised the largest proportion of cases reported this year. The section on academic affairs is the largest single section. As the job market gets tighter and the cost of education continues to increase, students' interests seem to be shifting from issues of due process and demonstrations to economic concerns. Within the framework of these consumer issues, a large number of cases have arisen at the graduate and professional school level. The proliferation of federal and state laws affecting higher education has also given rise to a relatively new area of litigation as institutions and students challenge regulations administered by bureaucratic agencies. This, the third annual yearbook on higher education law, provides a comprehensive summary and analysis of all state and federal court cases involving higher education reported during 1978. The chapters have been authored by individuals who are experts in higher education law and specialists in the particular topics of their chapter. The chapters are devoted to the following topics: governance and finance, property, liability, employees, collective bargaining, and students. The two largest chapters are those on employees and students. The employees chapter discusses such topics as employment, equal pay, employment discrimination, and retirement benefits, while the chapter on students examines freedom of expression, due process, publications, organizations, student fees, tuition, admissions, resident housing, academic affairs, financial aid, athletics, and related topics. A review of 1977 cases that involved students and institutions of higher education indicates that students seem to be more concerned with their rights as educational consumers. The majority of cases concern controversies focusing on classroom and academic evaluation and treatment of students; receipt of various forms of financial aid; use of student fees, fines, and other charges; and generally "getting what I paid for." The other issue which seems to be emerging relates to standards for admission. Further, many 1977 educational-consumer cases involved graduate and professional students who invested a great deal of time and money in their educational preparation. Other issues addressed in this chapter include due process, search and seizure, religious matters, publications, organizations, resident housing, athletics, parental support of students, and student voting. Court cases involving the relationship between institutions of higher education and their students during 1980 are discussed in this sixth and final chapter. A number of cases concerned constitutional issues such as rights of expression, due process, and association; separation of church and state; and freedom from undue search and seizure. Also considered are cases involving university regulation of students and policies on tuition, admissions, housing, graduation, athletics, financial aid, and student organizations.
