Charge density wave (CDW) orders in YNiC2 are studied by means of combined experimental and computational techniques. On the experimental side, single crystals grown by the floating-zone method were examined by means of X-ray diffraction, as well as transport and thermal techniques. Density functional theory (DFT) calculations founded on the experimentally determined parent and CDW-modified crystal structures provide details of electronic and phononic structures as well as electron-phonon coupling and resolve changes inflicted upon entering the different CDW phases. Thereby, contrasting effects of subsequently emerging CDW states characterized by incommensurate q_{1ic} and commensurate q_{2c} modulation vectors are revealed. The former state, on-setting below T_{1ic}~ 305 K, weakly modifies the electronic structure by opening an almost isotropic gap on a minor part of the Fermi surface (FS). The latter phase, which takes over below T_{2c}~ 272 K has a more pronounced impact on physical properties via a decomposition of larger parts of the FS. These dissimilar behaviors are directly reflected in the electronic transport anisotropy, which is significantly weakened in the q_{2c}-type CDW state. As revealed by our DFT studies, CDW phases are very close in energy and their origin is directly related to the anisotropy of electron-phonon coupling, which is linked to a specific orbital character of related FS sheets. Specific heat and thermal expansion studies reveal a nearly reversible first-order phase transition at around T_{2c}~ 272 K, where both CDW phases co-exist within a T-interval of about 10 K., Comment: Manuscript with 15 pages and 11 figures; Supplemental Material with 10 pages and 9 figures

The ice giant planets Uranus and Neptune are assumed to contain large amounts of planetary ices such as water, methane, and ammonia. The properties of mixtures of such ices at the extreme pressures and temperatures of planetary interiors are not yet well understood. Ab initio computer simulations predicted that a number of ices exhibit a hydrogen superionic state and a doubly superionic state [DOI: 10.1038/s41467-023-42958-0]. Since the latter state has not yet been generated with experiments, we outline here two possible pathways for reaching and detecting such a state with dynamic compression experiments. We suggest X-ray diffraction as the principal tool for detecting when the material becomes doubly superionic and the sublattice of one of the heavy nuclei melts. That would require a temperature of $\sim$3500 K and pressures greater than $\sim$200 GPa for H$_3$NO$_4$, which we use as an example material here. Such conditions can be reached with experiments that employ an initial shock that is followed by a ramp compression wave. Here we present several use cases for using Generative AI (Gen AI) to improve systems engineering and cognitive knowledge management related to the future of astronomy from a culmination of working meetings and presentations as part of the Gen AI Task Group for the NASA Habitable Worlds Observatory (HWO) Science and Technology Architecture Review Team (START) AI/ML Working Group. Collectively, our group mission statement is "Where is the Human-in-the-loop as Gen AI systems become more powerful and autonomous?" with an emphasis on the ethical applications of Gen AI, guided by using these systems to remove drudgery from human work while simultaneously increasing opportunities for humans to experience more collective creativity and innovation. The HWO mission stands to benefit dramatically from generative models for different data types including text, time series/spectra, and image data. These cover a wide range of applications in science and engineering for HWO, including: mission development acceleration, data analysis and interpretation, enhancing imaging capabilities, anomaly detection, predictive modeling and simulation, data augmentation for machine learning, instrument calibration and optimization, public engagement and education, and assisting in mission planning. As an example, through sensitivity analysis of simulated exoplanet population science data sets of various generative model complexity, we can reverse engineer the measurement uncertainty requirements for HWO instruments to produce data that can constrain population models and thus inform HWO design requirements. This approach to HWO design is one example of a strategy that can ensure that HWO remains AI-ready. Through presenting herein a combination of visionary ideas balanced with grounded validated use case examples, we aim to support the development of a long-term strategy to keep HWO AI-ready as it moves forward., Comment: Lack of guidelines for submitting work that came out of the HWO START TAG working groups.

We present a novel method for predicting binary phase diagrams through the automatic construction of a minimal basis set of representative templates. The core assumption is that any materials space can be divided into a small number of regions with similar chemical tendencies and bonding properties, and that a minimal set of templates can efficiently represent the key chemical trends across the different regions. By combining data-driven techniques with ab-initio crystal structure prediction, we can efficiently partition the materials space and construct templates reflecting variations in chemical behavior. Preliminary results demonstrate that our method predicts binary convex hulls with accuracy comparable to resource-intensive EA searches, while achieving a significant reduction in computational time (by a factor of 25). The method can be extended to ternary and multinary systems, enabling efficient high-throughput exploration and mapping of complex material spaces. Detecting complex anomalies on massive amounts of data is a crucial task in Industry 4.0, best addressed by deep learning. However, available solutions are computationally demanding, requiring cloud architectures prone to latency and bandwidth issues. This work presents VARADE, a novel solution implementing a light autoregressive framework based on variational inference, which is best suited for real-time execution on the edge. The proposed approach was validated on a robotic arm, part of a pilot production line, and compared with several state-of-the-art algorithms, obtaining the best trade-off between anomaly detection accuracy, power consumption and inference frequency on two different edge platforms.

The EXperiment for Cryogenic Large-Aperture Intensity Mapping (EXCLAIM) is a balloon-borne telescope designed to survey star formation over cosmological time scales using intensity mapping in the 420 - 540 GHz frequency range. EXCLAIM uses a fully cryogenic telescope coupled to six on-chip spectrometers featuring kinetic inductance detectors (KIDs) to achieve high sensitivity, allowing for fast integration in dark atmospheric windows. The telescope receiver is cooled to $\approx$ 1.7 K by immersion in a superfluid helium bath and enclosed in a superfluid-tight shell with a meta-material anti-reflection coated silicon window. In addition to the optics and the spectrometer package, the receiver contains the magnetic shielding, the cryogenic segment of the spectrometer readout, and the sub-Kelvin cooling system. A three-stage continuous adiabatic demagnetization refrigerator (CADR) keeps the detectors at 100 mK while a $^4$He sorption cooler provides a 900 mK thermal intercept for mechanical suspensions and coaxial cables. Conflicting theoretical scenarios for infinite-layer nickelate superconductors have been hotly debated, particularly regarding whether {only} a single Ni-3$d_{x^2-y^2}$ band is relevant at low energies besides electron pockets or whether multi-orbital physics including Ni-3$d_{z^2}$ is instead essential. The first scenario has emerged from density-functional theory plus dynamical mean-field theory (DFT+DMFT) calculations. Comparing the previous DFT+DMFT spectra to recent angular-resolved photoemission spectroscopy (ARPES) experiments, we find excellent agreement for both the Fermi surface and the strongly renormalized quasi-particle bands, supporting the first scenario. Our key findings further suggest that the "waterfalls" observed in ARPES might emerge from the quasi-particle--to--Hubbard-band crossover, and that additional spectral weight close to the $A$-pocket likely originates from the Ni-3$d_{xy}$ orbital., Comment: 8 pages, 4 figures

In this paper, we employ a Bayesian approach to assess the reliability of a critical component in the Mars Sample Return program, focusing on the Earth Entry System's risk of containment not assured upon reentry. Our study uses Gaussian Process modeling under a Bayesian regime to analyze the Earth Entry System's resilience against operational stress. This Bayesian framework allows for a detailed probabilistic evaluation of the risk of containment not assured, indicating the feasibility of meeting the mission's stringent safety goal of 0.999999 probability of success. The findings underscore the effectiveness of Bayesian methods for complex uncertainty quantification analyses of computer simulations, providing valuable insights for computational reliability analysis in a risk-averse setting.

Hydrogen hydrates present a rich phase diagram influenced by both pressure and temperature, with the so-called C$_2$ phase emerging prominently above 2.5 GPa. In this phase, hydrogen molecules are densely packed within a cubic ice-like lattice and the interaction with the surrounding water molecules profoundly affects their quantum rotational dynamics. Herein, we delve into this intricate interplay by directly solving the Schr\"{o}dinger's equation for a quantum H$_2$ rotor in the C$_2$ crystal field at finite temperature, generated through Density Functional Theory. Our calculations reveal a giant energy splitting relative to the magnetic quantum number of $\pm$3.2 meV for $l=1$. Employing inelastic neutron scattering, we experimentally measure the energy levels of H$_2$ within the C$_2$ phase at 6.0 and 3.4 GPa and low temperatures, finding remarkable agreement with our theoretical predictions. These findings underscore the pivotal role of hydrogen--water interactions in dictating the rotational behavior of the hydrogen molecules within the C$_2$ phase and indicate heightened induced-dipole interactions compared to other hydrogen hydrates., Comment: 4 Figures

Enforcing security requirements in networked information systems relies on security controls to mitigate the risks from increasingly dangerous threats. Configuring security controls is challenging; even nowadays, administrators must perform it without adequate tool support. Hence, this process is plagued by errors that translate to insecure postures, security incidents, and a lack of promptness in answering threats. This paper presents the Security Capability Model (SCM), a formal model that abstracts the features that security controls offer for enforcing security policies, which includes an Information Model that depicts the basic concepts related to rules (i.e., conditions, actions, events) and policies (i.e., conditions' evaluation, resolution strategies, default actions), and a Data Model that covers the capabilities needed to describe different types of filtering and channel protection controls. Following state-of-the-art design patterns, the model allows for generating abstract versions of the security controls' languages and a model-driven approach for translating abstract policies into device-specific configuration settings. By validating its effectiveness in real-world scenarios, we show that SCM enables the automation of different and complex security tasks, i.e., accurate and granular security control comparison, policy refinement, and incident response. Lastly, we present opportunities for extensions and integration with other frameworks and models.

The identification of patterns in space, time, and magnitude, which could potentially encode the subsequent earthquake magnitude, represents a significant challenge in earthquake forecasting. A pivotal aspect of this endeavor involves the search for correlations between earthquake magnitudes, a task greatly hindered by the incompleteness of instrumental catalogs. A novel strategy to address this challenge is provided by the groundbreaking observation by Van der Elst (Journal of Geophysical Research: Solid Earth, 2021), that positive magnitude differences, under certain conditions, remain unaffected by incompleteness. In this letter we adopt this strategy which provides a clear and unambiguous proof regarding the existence of correlations between subsequent positive magnitude differences. Our results are consistent with a time-dependent b-value in the Gutenberg-Richter law, significantly enhancing existing models for seismic forecasting.

The Radio Neutrino Observatory - Greenland (RNO-G) seeks discovery of ultra-high energy neutrinos from the cosmos through their interactions in ice. The science program extends beyond particle astrophysics to include radioglaciology and, as we show herein, solar observations, as well. Currently seven of 35 planned radio-receiver stations (24 antennas/station) are operational. These stations are sensitive to impulsive radio signals with frequencies between 80 and 700 MHz and feature a neutrino trigger threshold for recording data close to the thermal floor. RNO-G can also trigger on elevated signals from the Sun, resulting in nanosecond resolution time-domain flare data; such temporal resolution is significantly shorter than from most dedicated solar observatories. In addition to possible RNO-G solar flare polarization measurements, the Sun also represents an extremely useful above-surface calibration source. Using RNO-G data recorded during the summers of 2022 and 2023, we find signal excesses during solar flares reported by the solar-observing Callisto network and also in coincidence with $\sim$2/3 of the brightest excesses recorded by the SWAVES satellite. These observed flares are characterized by significant time-domain impulsivity. Using the known position of the Sun, the flare sample is used to calibrate the RNO-G absolute pointing on the radio signal arrival direction to sub-degree resolution. We thus establish the Sun as a regularly observed astronomical calibration source to provide the accurate absolute pointing required for neutrino astronomy.

This paper presents the design of an 800 V 11 kVA three-level three-phase active neutral point clamped inverter, utilizing 650 V gallium nitride enhancement-mode high-electron-mobility transistors, to evaluate its feasibility in electric traction systems. The modular approach of the presented power converter design is detailed discussed and the different printed circuit boards composing the power converter are presented, together with critical design issues. Thermoelectric (TE) materials are useful for applications such as waste heat harvesting or efficient and targeted cooling. While various strategies towards superior thermoelectrics through a reduction of the lattice thermal conductivity have been developed, a path to enhance the power factor is pressing. Here, we report large power factors up to 5 mW m$^{-1}$ K$^{-2}$ at room temperature in the kagome metal Ni$_3$In$_{1-x}$Sn$_x$. This system is predicted to feature almost dispersionless flat bands in conjunction with highly dispersive Dirac-like bands in its electronic structure around the Fermi energy $E_\text{F}$ [L. Ye et al., Nature Physics 1-5 (2024)]. Within this study, we experimentally and theoretically showcase that tuning this flat band precisely below $E_\text{F}$ by chemical doping $x$ boosts the Seebeck coefficient and power factor, as highly mobile charge carriers scatter into the flat-band states. Our work demonstrates the prospect of engineering extremely flat and highly dispersive bands towards the Fermi energy in kagome metals and introduces topological flat bands as a novel tuning knob for thermoelectrics.

We present the first $ab$-$initio$ study of superconductivity in NbTi, the workhorse for many applications. Despite its apparent simplicity, NbTi turns out to be a major challenge for computational superconductivity. In fact, anharmonic effects are crucial to obtain dynamically stable phonons for the ordered bcc phase, unstable at the harmonic level, and beyond-Morel Anderson effects in the Coulomb interaction reduce the Tc by more than 20%. Lattice disorder causes an additional large discrepancy in $T_c$ compared to experiment. A generalized Bose-Hubbard model in a two-mode approximation is applied to study the rotational dynamics of a direct-current atomtronic quantum interference device. Modified values of on-site interaction and pair-tunneling parameters of the Hamiltonian, derived from the small-oscillation periods of the Josephson modes, are shown to provide an excellent agreement to the Gross-Pitaevskii simulation results for the whole rotational frequency range, reaching also the critical values of imbalance and current. This amounts to a full validation of the semiclassical approximation of the modified Hamiltonian, whose quantization is employed to investigate the quantum features of the stationary states. Focusing on the frequency interval where the potential energy presents two minima, it is shown that the central frequency, at which such minima are symmetric, yields an atom number parity-protected qubit with a maximum entanglement of both persistent-current states, similar to those of superconducting circuits threaded by a half-quantum of applied flux. Such a parity protection scheme survives within a small interval around the central frequency, which sets the minimum rotational frequency precision that should be required to implement the qubit. It is found that such a maximum admissible error in the frequency determination turns out to be inversely proportional to the qubit quality factor that measures the gap between the qubit energy levels and the following levels. It is shown that the chemical potential or condensate particle number could be employed as suitable control parameters to achieve the best trade-off between such qubit characteristics.

This paper introduces the HEX (High-pressure Elemental Xstals) database, a complete database of the ground-state crystal structures of the first 57 elements of the periodic table, from H to La, at 0, 100, 200 and 300 GPa. HEX aims to provide a unified reference for high-pressure research, by compiling all available experimental information on elements at high pressure, and complementing it with the results of accurate evolutionary crystal structure prediction runs based on Density Functional Theory. Besides offering a much-needed reference, our work also serves as a benchmark of the accuracy of current ab-initio methods for crystal structure prediction. We find that, in 98 % of the cases in which experimental information is available, ab-initio crystal structure prediction yields structures which either coincide or are degenerate in enthalpy to within 300 K with experimental ones. We describe a testbed to characterize the optical response of compact superconducting on-chip spectrometers in development for the Experiment for Cryogenic Large-Aperture Intensity Mapping (EXCLAIM) mission. EXCLAIM is a balloonborne far-infrared experiment to probe the CO and CII emission lines in galaxies from redshift 3.5 to the present. The spectrometer, called u-Spec, comprises a diffraction grating on a silicon chip coupled to kinetic inductance detectors (KIDs) read out via a single microwave feedline. We use a prototype spectrometer for EXCLAIM to demonstrate our ability to characterize the spectrometers spectral response using a photomixer source. We utilize an on-chip reference detector to normalize relative to spectral structure from the off-chip optics and a silicon etalon to calibrate the absolute frequency.

High-temperature unconventional superconductivity quite generically emerges from doping a strongly correlated parent compound, often (close to) an antiferromagnetic insulator. The recently developed dynamical vertex approximation is a state-of-the-art technique that has quantitatively predicted the superconducting dome of nickelates. Here, we apply it to study the effect of pressure in the infinite-layer nickelate Sr$_x$Pr$_ {1-x}$NiO$_2$. We reproduce the increase of the critical temperature ($T_c$) under pressure found in experiment up to 12 GPa. According to our results, $T_c$ can be further increased with higher pressures. Even without Sr-doping the parent compound, PrNiO$_2$, will become a high-temperature superconductor thanks to a strongly enhanced self-doping of the \nidxsqysq{} orbital under pressure. With a maximal \Tc{} of 100\,K around 100\,GPa, nickelate superconductors can reach that of the best cuprates., Comment: Main text: 6 pages, 4 figures. In the last years, transition metal dichalcogenides (TMDs), especially at the two-dimensional (2D) limit, gained a large interest due to their unique optical and electronic properties. Among them, MoS2 received great attention from the scientific community due to its versatility, workability, and applicability in a large number of fields such as electronics, optoelectronics and electrocatalysis. To open the possibility of 2D-MoS2 exploitation, its synthesis over large macroscopic areas using cost-effective methods is fundamental. In this study, we report a method for the synthesis of large-area (~ cm2) few-layers MoS2 via liquid precursor CVD (L-CVD), where the Mo precursor (i.e. ammonium heptamolybdate AHM) is provided via a solution that is spin-coated over the substrate. Given the capability of organic and inorganic molecules, such as alkaline salts, to enhance MoS2 growth, we investigated the action of different inorganic salts as seed promoters. In particular, by using visible Raman spectroscopy, we focused on the effect of Na(OH), KCl, KI, and Li(OH) on the thickness, morphology, uniformity and degree of coverage of the grown MoS2. We optimized the process tuning parameters such as the volume of spin-coated solution, the growth temperature, and the seed promoter concentration, to synthesise the lowest possible thickness which resulted to be 2 layers (2L) of the highest quality. We witnessed that the addition of an inorganic seed promoter in the solution improves the extension of the grown MoS2 promoting lateral growth front, and therefore the degree of coverage. From this study, we conclude that, amongst the investigated seed promoters, K-based salts proved to grant the growth of high-quality two-layer MoS2 with optimal and uniform coverage of the SiO2/Si substrate surface.

Motivated by unexpected reports of a 26 K superconducting transition in elemental titanium at high pressure, we carry out an accurate ab-initio study of its properties to understand the rationale for this observation. The critical superconducting temperatures (Tc's) predicted under the assumption of a phononic pairing mechanism are found to be significantly lower than those experimentally observed. We argue that this disagreement cannot be explained by an unconventional coupling, as previously suggested, or by the existence of competing metastable structural phases. As a physically meaningful hypothesis to reconcile experimental and theoretical results, we assume the presence of Ti vacancies in the lattice. Our first-principles calculations indeed show that lattice vacancies can cause pressure dependent phonon softening and substantially increase the electron-phonon coupling at high pressure, yielding computed Tc's in agreement with the experimental measurements over the full pressure range from 150 to 300 GPa. We briefly review the status quo of research on the putative superconductor Pb$_9$Cu(PO$_4$)$_6$O also known as LK-99. Further, we provide {\em ab initio} derived tight-binding parameters for a two- and five-band model, and solve these in dynamical-mean-field theory. The ratio interaction-to-bandwidth makes LK-99 a Mott or charge transfer insulator. Electron or hole doping (which is different from substituting Pb by Cu and thus differs from LK-99) is required to make it metallic and potentially superconducting., Comment: 7 figures, 9 pages, 2 tables. IceCube-Gen2 is a planned next-generation neutrino observatory at the South Pole that builds upon the successful design of IceCube. Integrating two complementary detection technologies for neutrinos, optical and radio Cherenkov emission, in combination with a surface array for cosmic ray air shower detection, IceCube-Gen2 will cover a broad neutrino energy range from MeV to EeV. This index of contributions to the 38th International Cosmic Ray Conference in Nagoya, Japan (July 26 - August 3, 2023) describes research and development efforts for IceCube-Gen2. Industry 4.0 involves the integration of digital technologies, such as IoT, Big Data, and AI, into manufacturing and industrial processes to increase efficiency and productivity. As these technologies become more interconnected and interdependent, Industry 4.0 systems become more complex, which brings the difficulty of identifying and stopping anomalies that may cause disturbances in the manufacturing process. This paper aims to propose a diffusion-based model for real-time anomaly prediction in Industry 4.0 processes. Using a neuro-symbolic approach, we integrate industrial ontologies in the model, thereby adding formal knowledge on smart manufacturing. Finally, we propose a simple yet effective way of distilling diffusion models through Random Fourier Features for deployment on an embedded system for direct integration into the manufacturing process. The evaluation of the $b$ value of the Gutenberg-Richter (GR) law, for a sample composed of $n$ earthquakes, presents a systematic positive bias $\delta b$ which is proportional to $1/n$, as already observed by Ogata \& Yamashina (1986). In this study we show how to incorporate in $\delta b$ the bias introduced by deviations from the GR law. More precisely we show that $\delta b$ is proportional to the square of the variability coefficient $CV$, defined as the ratio between {the standard deviation of the magnitude distribution and its mean value.} When the magnitude distribution follows the GR law $CV=1$ and this allows us to introduce a new procedure, based on the dependence of $b$ on $n$, which allows us to {identify} the incompleteness magnitude $m_c$ as the threshold magnitude leading to $CV=1$. The method is tested on synthetic catalogs and it is applied to estimate $m_c$ in Southern California, Japan and New Zealand.

We use techniques of Alper-Hall-Rydh to prove a local structure theorem for smooth morphisms between smooth stacks around points with linearly reductive stabilizers. This implies that the good moduli space of a smooth stack over a base has equisingular fibers. As an application, we show that any two fibres have isomorphic $\ell$-adic cohomology rings and intersection cohomology groups. If we work over the complex numbers, we show that the family is topologically locally trivial on the base, and that the intersection cohomology groups of the fibers fit into a polarizable variation of pure Hodge structures. We apply these results to derive some consequences for the moduli spaces of $G$-bundles on smooth projective curves, and for the moduli spaces of sheaves on "negatively polarized" surfaces and on del Pezzo Gorenstein surfaces for nongeneric stability parameters., Comment: 21 pages. The mobility edge (ME) is a crucial concept in understanding localization physics, marking the critical transition between extended and localized states in the energy spectrum. Anderson localization scaling theory predicts the absence of ME in lower dimensional systems. Hence, the search for exact MEs, particularly for single particles in lower dimensions, has recently garnered significant interest in both theoretical and experimental studies, resulting in notable progress. However, several open questions remain, including the possibility of a single system exhibiting multiple MEs and the continual existence of extended states, even within the strong disorder domain. Here, we provide experimental evidence to address these questions by utilizing a quasiperiodic mosaic lattice with meticulously designed nanophotonic circuits. Our observations demonstrate the coexistence of both extended and localized states in lattices with broken duality symmetry and varying modulation periods. By single site injection and scanning the disorder level, we could approximately probe the ME of the modulated lattice. These results corroborate recent theoretical predictions, introduce a new avenue for investigating ME physics, and offer inspiration for further exploration of ME physics in the quantum regime using hybrid integrated photonic devices.

In this paper we present a first-principles study of the high-pressure superconducting phase diagram of calcium alanates (Ca-Al-H), based on ab-initio crystal structure prediction and anisotropic Migdal-Eliashberg Theory. Calcium alanates have been intensively studied at ambient pressure for their hydrogen-storage properties, but their high-pressure behavior is largely unknown. By performing a full scan of the ternary convex hull at several pressures between 0 and 300 GPa, we identify several new structural motifs, characterized by a high Al-H coordination, where Al--$d$ orbitals participate in the bonding. Among all new phases thus identified, we focus in particular on a phase with CaAlH$_7$ composition, which lies on the convex hull at 300 GPa, and remains dynamically stable down to 50 GPa, with a predicted superconducting T$_c$ of 82 K, which likely represents a new promising template to achieve increase chemical precompression in ternary hydrides. Our findings reveal important insights into the structure-property relationships of calcium alanates under high pressure, and highlight a possible strategy to achieve conventional superconductivity at low pressures., Comment: 5 figures, submitted to JPCM

Glacial ice is used as a target material for the detection of ultra-high energy neutrinos, by measuring the radio signals that are emitted when those neutrinos interact in the ice. Thanks to the large attenuation length at radio frequencies, these signals can be detected over distances of several kilometers. One experiment taking advantage of this is the Radio Neutrino Observatory Greenland (RNO-G), currently under construction at Summit Station, near the apex of the Greenland ice sheet. These experiments require a thorough understanding of the dielectric properties of ice at radio frequencies. Towards this goal, calibration campaigns have been undertaken at Summit, during which we recorded radio reflections off internal layers in the ice sheet. Using data from the nearby GISP2 and GRIP ice cores, we show that these reflectors can be associated with features in the ice conductivity profiles; we use this connection to determine the index of refraction of the bulk ice as n=1.778 +/- 0.006.

Motivated by the recent report of room-temperature superconductivity at near-ambient pressure in N-doped lutetium hydride by Dasenbrock et al. [Nature 615, 244 (2023)], we performed a comprehensive, detailed study of the phase diagram of the Lu-N-H system, looking for superconducting phases. We combined ab initio crystal structure prediction with ephemeral data-derived interatomic potentials to sample over 200,000 different structures. Out of the more than 150 structures predicted to be metastable within $\sim$ 50 meV from the convex hull we identify 52 viable candidates for conventional superconductivity, for which we computed their superconducting properties from Density Functional Perturbation Theory. Although for some of these structures we do predict a finite superconducting $T_{\text{c}}$, none is even remotely compatible with room-temperature superconductivity as reported by Dasenbrock et al. Our work joins the broader community effort that has followed the report of near-ambient superconductivity, confirming beyond reasonable doubt that no conventional mechanism can explain the reported $T_{\text{c}}$ in Lu-N-H.

A recent experiment [X. Ding et al., Nature 615, 50 (2023)] indicates that superconductivity in nickelates is restricted to a narrow window of hydrogen concentration: 0.22 < x < 0.28 in Nd$_{0.8}$Sr$_{0.2}$NiO$_{2}$H$_{x}$. This reported necessity of hydrogen suggests that it plays a crucial role for superconductivity, as it does in the vast field of hydride superconductors. Using density-functional theory and its extensions, we explore the effect of topotactic hydrogen on the electronic structure and phonon-mediated superconductivity in nickelate superconductors. Our calculations show that the electron-phonon coupling in hydrogen-intercalated nickelates is not strong enough to drive the electron pairing, and thus cannot explain the reported superconductivity., Comment: 3 figures, 1 table

The last years have seen an increase in Man-at-the-End (MATE) attacks against software applications, both in number and severity. However, software protection, which aims at mitigating MATE attacks, is dominated by fuzzy concepts and security-through-obscurity. This paper presents a rationale for adopting and standardizing the protection of software as a risk management process according to the NIST SP800-39 approach. We examine the relevant constructs, models, and methods needed for formalizing and automating the activities in this process in the context of MATE software protection. We highlight the open issues that the research community still has to address. We discuss the benefits that such an approach can bring to all stakeholders. In addition, we present a Proof of Concept (PoC) decision support system that instantiates many of the discussed construct, models, and methods and automates many activities in the risk analysis methodology for the protection of software. Digital media have enabled the access to unprecedented literary knowledge. Authors, readers, and scholars are now able to discover and share an increasing amount of information about books and their authors. Notwithstanding, digital archives are still unbalanced: writers from non-Western countries are less represented, and such a condition leads to the perpetration of old forms of discrimination. In this paper, we present the Under-Represented Writers Knowledge Graph (URW-KG), a resource designed to explore and possibly amend this lack of representation by gathering and mapping information about works and authors from Wikidata and three other sources: Open Library, Goodreads, and Google Books. The experiments based on KG embeddings showed that the integrated information encoded in the graph allows scholars and users to be more easily exposed to non-Western literary works and authors with respect to Wikidata alone. This opens to the development of fairer and effective tools for author discovery and exploration.

The quantum nature of the hydrogen lattice in superconducting hydrides can have crucial effects on the material's properties. Taking a detailed look at the dynamic stability of the recently predicted BaSiH$_8$ phase, we find that the inclusion of anharmonic quantum ionic effects leads to an increase in the critical dynamical pressure to $20\,\text{GPa}$ as compared to $5\,\text{GPa}$ within the harmonic approximation. We identify the change in the crystal structure due to quantum ionic effects to be the main driving force for this increase and demonstrate that this can already be understood at the harmonic level by considering zero-point energy corrections to the total electronic energy. In fact, the previously determined critical pressure of kinetic stability $p_\text{kin} = 30\,\text{GPa}$ still poses a stricter bound for the synthesizability of BaSiH$_8$ and similar hydride materials than the dynamical stability and therefore constitutes a more rigorous and accurate estimate for the experimental realizability of these structures., Comment: 10 pages, 5 figures. We recently reported on the radio-frequency attenuation length of cold polar ice at Summit Station, Greenland, based on bistatic radar measurements of radio-frequency bedrock echo strengths taken during the summer of 2021. Those data also include echoes attributed to stratified impurities or dielectric discontinuities within the ice sheet (layers), which allow studies of a) estimation of the relative contribution of coherent (discrete layers, e.g.) vs. incoherent (bulk volumetric, e.g.) scattering, b) the magnitude of internal layer reflection coefficients, c) limits on the azimuthal asymmetry of reflections (birefringence), and d) limits on signal dispersion in-ice over a bandwidth of ~100 MHz. We find that i) after averaging 10000 echo triggers, reflected signal observable over the thermal floor (to depths of approximately 1500 m) are consistent with being entirely coherent, ii) internal layer reflection coefficients are measured at approximately -60 to -70 dB, iii) birefringent effects for vertically propagating signals are smaller by an order of magnitude relative to comparable studies performed at South Pole, and iv) within our experimental limits, glacial ice is non-dispersive over the frequency band relevant for neutrino detection experiments.

The stack of relative splittings of a special Azumaya algebra plays a key role in the Non-Abelian Hodge Theory for curves in positive characteristics. In this paper, we define and study an open substack consisting of the so-called very good splittings. We show that, when using very good splittings, the Non-Abelian Hodge isomorphism preserves the semistable loci on the Dolbeault and the de Rham sides. We also show that the stack of very good splittings admits a quasi-projective tame moduli space. As a consequence, we show that the derived pushforwards of the intersection complexes by the Hitchin and the de Rham-Hitchin morphisms are isomorphic and they have isomorphic perverse cohomology sheaves., Comment: Final version. We show the smoothness over the affine line of the Hodge moduli space of logarithmic t-connections of coprime rank and degree on a smooth projective curve with geometrically integral fibers over an arbitrary Noetherian base. When the base is a field, we also prove that the Hodge moduli space is geometrically integral. Along the way, we prove the same results for the corresponding moduli spaces of logarithmic Higgs bundles and of logarithmic connections. We use smoothness to derive specialization isomorphisms on the etale cohomology rings of these moduli spaces; this includes the special case when the base is of mixed characteristic. In the special case where the base is a separably closed field of positive characteristic, we show that these isomorphisms are filtered isomorphisms for the perverse filtrations associated with the corresponding Hitchin-type morphisms., Comment: 38 pages. The EXperiment for Cryogenic Large-Aperture Intensity Mapping (EXCLAIM) is a balloon-borne cryogenic telescope that will survey the spectrum of diffuse emission from both the Milky Way and the cosmic web to probe star formation, the interstellar medium, and galaxy evolution across cosmic time. EXCLAIM's primary extragalactic science survey maps 305 deg$^2$ along the celestial equator with an R=512 spectrometer over the frequency range \nu=420-540 GHz, targeting emission of the [CII] line over redshifts 2.5

This paper describes a cryogenic optical testbed developed to characterize u-Spec spectrometers in a dedicated dilution refrigerator (DR) system. u-Spec is a far-infrared integrated spectrometer that is an analog to a Rowland-type grating spectrometer. It employs a single-crystal silicon substrate with niobium microstrip lines and aluminum kinetic inductance detectors (KIDs). Current designs with a resolution of 512 are in fabrication for the EXCLAIM (Experiment for Cryogenic Large Aperture Intensity Mapping) balloon mission. The primary spectrometer performance and design parameters are efficiency, NEP, inter-channel isolation, spectral resolution, and frequency response for each channel. Here we present the development and design of an optical characterization facility and preliminary validation of that facility with earlier prototype R=64 devices. We have conducted and describe initial optical measurements of R = 64 devices using a swept photomixer line source. The current state of far-infrared astronomy drives the need to develop compact, sensitive spectrometers for future space and ground-based instruments. Here we present details of the $\rm \mu$-Spec spectrometers currently in development for the far-infrared balloon mission EXCLAIM. The spectrometers are designed to cover the $\rm 555 - 714\ \mu$m range with a resolution of $\rm R\ =\ \lambda / \Delta\lambda\ =\ 512$ at the $\rm 638\ \mu$m band center. The spectrometer design incorporates a Rowland grating spectrometer implemented in a parallel plate waveguide on a low-loss single-crystal Si chip, employing Nb microstrip planar transmission lines and thin-film Al kinetic inductance detectors (KIDs). The EXCLAIM $\rm \mu$-Spec design is an advancement upon a successful $\rm R = 64\ \mu$-Spec prototype, and can be considered a sub-mm superconducting photonic integrated circuit (PIC) that combines spectral dispersion and detection. The design operates in a single $M{=}2$ grating order, allowing one spectrometer to cover the full EXCLAIM band without requiring a multi-order focal plane. The EXCLAIM instrument will fly six spectrometers, which are fabricated on a single 150 mm diameter Si wafer. Fabrication involves a flip-wafer-bonding process with patterning of the superconducting layers on both sides of the Si dielectric. The spectrometers are designed to operate at 100 mK, and will include 355 Al KID detectors targeting a goal of NEP ${\sim}8\times10^{-19}$ $\rm W/\sqrt{Hz}$. TAROGE-M is a self-triggered radio antenna array atop the 2700 m high Mt. Melbourne in Antarctica, designed to detect impulsive geomagnetic emission from extensive air showers induced by ultra-high energy (UHE) particles beyond 0.1 EeV, including cosmic rays (CRs), Earth-skimming tau neutrinos, and particularly, the "ANITA anomalous events" (AAEs) from near and below the horizon, which origin remains uncertain and requires more experimental inputs for clarification. The detection concept of TAROGE-M takes advantage of a high altitude with synoptic view toward the horizon as an efficient signal collector, and the radio quietness as well as strong and near vertical geomagnetic field in Antarctica. This approach has a low energy threshold, high duty cycle, and is easy to extend for quickly enlarging statistics. Here we report experimental results from the first TAROGE-M station deployed in 2020, corresponding to $25.3$-days of livetime. The station consists of six receiving antennas operating at 180-450 MHz, and can reconstruct source directions with $\sim0.3^\circ$ angular resolution. To demonstrate its ability to detect UHE air showers, a search for CR signals in the data was conducted, resulting in seven identified events. These events have a mean reconstructed energy of $0.95_{-0.31}^{+0.46}$ EeV and zenith angles between $25^\circ-82^\circ$, with both distributions agreeing with simulations. The estimated CR flux is also consistent with results of other experiments. The TAROGE-M sensitivity to AAEs is approximated by the tau neutrino exposure with simulations, suggesting comparable sensitivity as ANITA's at $~1$ EeV energy with a few station-years of operation. The extreme pressures required to stabilize the recently discovered superhydrides represent a major obstacle to their practical application. In this paper, we propose a novel route to attain high-temperature superconductivity in hydrides at ambient pressure, by doping commercial metal borohydrides. Using first-principles calculations based on Density Functional Theory and Migdal-Eliashberg theory, we demonstrate that in Ca(BH$_4$)$_2$ a moderate hole doping of 0.03 holes per formula unit, obtained through a partial replacement of Ca with monovalent K, is sufficient to achieve $T_c$'s as high as 110 K. The high-$T_c$ arises because of the strong electron-phonon coupling between the B-H $\sigma$ molecular orbitals and bond-stretching phonons. Using a random sampling of large supercells to estimate the local effects of doping, we show that the required doping can be achieved without significant disruption of the electronic structure and at moderate energetic cost. Given the wide commercial availability of metal borohydrides, the ideas presented here can find prompt experimental confirmation. The discovery of high-$T_c$ conventional superconductivity in high-pressure hydrides has helped establish computational methods as a formidable tool to guide material discoveries in a field traditionally dominated by serendipitous experimental search. This paves the way to an ever-increasing use of data-driven approaches to the study and design of superconductors. In this work, we propose a new method to generate meaningful datasets of superconductors, based on element substitution into a small set of representative structural templates, generated by crystal structure prediction methods (MultiTemplate-HighThroughput approach). Our approach realizes an optimal compromise between structural variety and computational efficiency, and can be easily generalized to other elements and compositions. As a first application, we apply it to binary hydrides at high pressure, realizing a database of 880 hypothetical structures, characterized with a set of electronic, vibrational and chemical descriptors. 139 structures of our $Superhydra$ Database are superconducting according to the McMillan-Allen-Dynes approximation. Studying the distribution of $T_c$ and other properties across the database with advanced statistical and visualization techniques, we are able to obtain comprehensive material maps of the phase space of binary hydrides. Over the last 25 years, radiowave detection of neutrino-generated signals, using cold polar ice as the neutrino target, has emerged as perhaps the most promising technique for detection of extragalactic ultra-high energy neutrinos (corresponding to neutrino energies in excess of 0.01 Joules, or $10^{17}$ electron volts). During the summer of 2021 and in tandem with the initial deployment of the Radio Neutrino Observatory in Greenland (RNO-G), we conducted radioglaciological measurements at Summit Station, Greenland to refine our understanding of the ice target. We report the result of one such measurement, the radio-frequency electric field attenuation length $L_\alpha$. We find an approximately linear dependence of $L_\alpha$ on frequency with the best fit of the average field attenuation for the upper 1500 m of ice: $\langle L_\alpha \rangle = \big( (1154 \pm 121) - (0.81 \pm 0.14) (\nu/$MHz$)\big)$ m for frequencies $\nu \in [145 - 350]$ MHz., Comment: 13 pages, 8 figures, Accepted to Journal of Glaciology

We report the theoretical prediction of two high-performing hydride superconductors BaSiH$_8$ and SrSiH$_8$. They are thermodynamically stable above pressures of $130$ and $174\,\text{GPa}$, respectively, and metastable below that. Employing anharmonic phonon calculations, we determine the minimum pressures of dynamical stability to be around $3\,\text{GPa}$ for BaSiH$_8$ and $27\,\text{GPa}$ for SrSiH$_8$, and using the fully anisotropic Migdal-Eliashberg theory, we predict $T_\text{c}$'s around $71$ and $126\,\text{K}$, respectively. We also introduce a method to estimate the lowest pressure of synthesis, based on the calculation of the enthalpy barriers protecting the BaSiH$_8$ $Fm\bar{3}m$ structure from decomposition at various pressures. This $kinetic$ pressure threshold is sensibly higher than the one based on $dynamic$ stability, but gives a much more rigorous limit for synthesizability., Comment: 9 pages, 6 figures. The ARIANNA experiment is an Askaryan detector designed to record radio signals induced by neutrino interactions in the Antarctic ice. Because of the low neutrino flux at high energies ($E > 10^{16} $), the physics output is limited by statistics. Hence, an increase in sensitivity significantly improves the interpretation of data and offers the ability to probe new parameter spaces. The amplitudes of the trigger threshold are limited by the rate of triggering on unavoidable thermal noise fluctuations. We present a real-time thermal noise rejection algorithm that enables the trigger thresholds to be lowered, which increases the sensitivity to neutrinos by up to a factor of two (depending on energy) compared to the current ARIANNA capabilities. A deep learning discriminator, based on a Convolutional Neural Network (CNN), is implemented to identify and remove thermal events in real time. We describe a CNN trained on MC data that runs on the current ARIANNA microcomputer and retains 95 percent of the neutrino signal at a thermal noise rejection factor of $10^5$, compared to a template matching procedure which reaches only $10^2$ for the same signal efficiency. Then the results are verified in a lab measurement by feeding in generated neutrino-like signal pulses and thermal noise directly into the ARIANNA data acquisition system. Lastly, the same CNN is used to classify cosmic-rays events to make sure they are not rejected. The ARIANNA detector is designed to detect neutrinos with energies above $10^{17}$eV. Due to the similarities in generated radio signals, cosmic rays are often used as test beams for neutrino detectors. Some ARIANNA detector stations are equipped with antennas capable of detecting air showers. Since the radio emission properties of air showers are well understood, and the polarization of the radio signal can be predicted from the arrival direction, cosmic rays can be used as a proxy to assess the reconstruction capabilities of the ARIANNA neutrino detector. We report on dedicated efforts of reconstructing the polarization of cosmic-ray radio pulses. After correcting for difference in hardware, the two stations used in this study showed similar performance in terms of event rate and agreed with simulation. Subselecting high quality cosmic rays, the polarizations of these cosmic rays were reconstructed with a resolution of $2.5^{\circ}$ (68% containment), which agrees with the expected value obtained from simulation. A large fraction of this resolution originates from uncertainties in the predicted polarization because of the contribution of the subdominant Askaryan effect in addition to the dominant geomagnetic emission. Subselecting events with a zenith angle greater than $70^{\circ}$ removes most influence of the Askaryan emission, and, with limited statistics, we found the polarization uncertainty is reduced to $1.3^{\circ}$ (68% containment)., Comment: 15 pages, 7 figures. By means of a two-mode model, we show that transitions to different arrays of coexistent regimes in the phase space can be attained by rotating a double-well system, which consists of a toroidal condensate with two diametrically placed barriers. Such a configuration corresponds to the atomtronic counterpart of the well-known direct-current superconducting quantum interference device. Due to the phase gradient experimented by the on-site localized functions when the system is subject to rotation, a phase difference appears on each junction in order to satisfy the quantization of the velocity field around the torus. We demonstrate that such a phase can produce a significant change on the relative values of different types of hopping parameters. In particular, we show that within a determined rotation frequency interval, a hopping parameter, usually disregarded in nonrotating systems, turns out to rule the dynamics. At the limits of such a frequency interval, bifurcations of the stationary points occur, which substantially change the phase space portrait that describes the orbits of the macroscopic canonical conjugate variables. We analyze the emerging dynamics that combines the $0$ and $\pi$ Josephson modes, and evaluate the small-oscillation time-periods of such orbits at the frequency range where each mode survives. Ramp compression experiments characterize high-pressure states of matter at temperatures well below those present in shock compression. However, because temperature is typically not directly measured during ramp compression, it is uncertain how much heating occurs under these shock-free conditions. Here, we performed a series of ab initio simulations on carbon in order to match the density-stress measurements of Smith et al. [Smith, et al., Nature 511, 330 (2014)]. We considered isotropically as well as uniaxially compressed solid carbon in the diamond and BC8 phases, with and without defects, as well as liquid carbon. Our idealized model ascribes heating during ramp compression to an initially uniaxially compressed cell transforming isochorically into an isotropically (hydrostatic equivalent) compressed state having lower internal energy, hence higher temperature so as to conserve energy. Multiple such heating events can occur during a single ramp experiment, leading to higher temperatures than with isentropic compression. Comparison with experiments shows that heating alone does not explain the equation of state measurements on diamond, instead implying that a significant uniaxial stress component remains present at high compression. We report a high-throughput ab-initio study of the thermodynamic and superconducting proper- ties of the recently synthesized XB$_3$C$_3$ clathrates. These compounds, in which boron and carbon form a sponge-like network of interconnected cages each enclosing a central X atom, are attractive candidates to achieve high-Tc conventional superconductivity at ambient pressure, due to the simultaneous presence of a stiff B-C covalent network and a tunable charge reservoir, provided by the guest atom. Ternary compounds like CaB$_3$C$_3$, SrB$_3$C$_3$ and BaB$_3$C$_3$ are predicted to exhibit T$_c$ $\lt$ 50 K at moderate or ambient pressures, which may further increase up to 77 K if the original compounds are hole-doped by replacing the divalent alkaline earth with a monovalent alkali metal to form ordered $XY$B$_6$C$_6$ alloys., Comment: 5 figures, two tables
