In this work the linearity in the response of an ionization-chamber as a function of $^{99m}$Tc activity was checked as part of a calibration procedure for $^{192}$Ir activity measurements. The non-linearity was found to be caused mainly by the electrometer range switching. A model based on the hypothesis that the non-linear effect did not influence the decay constant was tested. The analysis of the time profile of electrical signals produced by energy depositions in germanium detectors allows discrimination of events with different topologies. This is especially relevant for experiments searching for the neutrinoless double beta decay of $^{76}$Ge to distinguish the sought-after signal from other background sources. The standard calibration procedures used to tune the selection criteria for double-beta decay events use a $^{228}$Th source, because it provides samples of signal-like events. These samples exhibit energy spatial distributions with subtle different topologies compared to neutrinoless double-beta decay events. In this work, we will characterize these topological differences and, with the support of a $^{56}$Co source, evaluate biases and precision of calibration techniques which use such event samples. Our results will be particularly relevant for future experiments in which a solid estimation of the efficiency is required.

To increase the availability and adoption of the soundscape standard, a low-cost calibration procedure for reproduction of audio stimuli over headphones was proposed as part of the global ``Soundscape Attributes Translation Project'' (SATP) for validating ISO/TS~12913-2:2018 perceived affective quality (PAQ) attribute translations. A previous preliminary study revealed significant deviations from the intended equivalent continuous A-weighted sound pressure levels ($L_{\text{A,eq}}$) using the open-circuit voltage (OCV) calibration procedure. For a more holistic human-centric perspective, the OCV method is further investigated here in terms of psychoacoustic parameters, including relevant exceedance levels to account for temporal effects on the same 27 stimuli from the SATP. Moreover, a within-subjects experiment with 36 participants was conducted to examine the effects of OCV calibration on the PAQ attributes in ISO/TS~12913-2:2018. Bland-Altman analysis of the objective indicators revealed large biases in the OCV method across all weighted sound level and loudness indicators; and roughness indicators at \SI{5}{\%} and \SI{10}{\%} exceedance levels. Significant perceptual differences due to the OCV method were observed in about \SI{20}{\%} of the stimuli, which did not correspond clearly with the biased acoustic indicators. Inertial measurement units (IMUs) are used in medical applications for many different purposes. However, an IMU's measurement accuracy can degrade over time, entailing re-calibration. In their 2014 paper, Tedaldi et al. presented an IMU calibration method that does not require external precision equipment or complex procedures. This allows end-users or personnel without expert knowledge of inertial measurement to re-calibrate the sensors by placing them in several suitable but not precisely defined orientations. In this work, we present several improvements to Tedaldi's method, both on the algorithmic level and the calibration procedure: adaptions for low noise accelerometers, a calibration helper object, and packet loss compensation for wireless calibration. We applied the modified calibration procedure to our custom-built IMU platform and verified the consistency of results across multiple calibration runs. In order to minimize the time needed for re-calibration, we analyzed how the calibration result accuracy degrades when fewer calibration orientations are used. We found that N=12 different orientations are sufficient to achieve a very good calibration, and more orientations yielded only marginal improvements. This is a significant improvement compared to the 37 to 50 orientations recommended by Tedaldi. Thus, we were reduced the time required to calibrate a single IMU from ca. 5 minutes to less than 2 minutes without sacrificing any meaningful calibration accuracy., Comment: Submitted to BioCAS 2022

The introduction of ISO 12913-2:2018 has provided a framework for standardized data collection and reporting procedures for soundscape practitioners. A strong emphasis was placed on the use of calibrated head and torso simulators (HATS) for binaural audio capture to obtain an accurate subjective impression and acoustic measure of the soundscape under evaluation. To auralise the binaural recordings as recorded or at set levels, the audio stimuli and the headphone setup are usually calibrated with a HATS. However, calibrated HATS are too financially prohibitive for most research teams, inevitably diminishing the availability of the soundscape standard. With the increasing availability of soundscape binaural recording datasets, and the importance of cross-cultural validation of the soundscape ISO standards, e.g.\ via the Soundscape Attributes Translation Project (SATP), it is imperative to assess the suitability of cost-effective headphone calibration methods to maximise availability without severely compromising on accuracy. Hence, this study objectively examines an open-circuit voltage (OCV) calibration method in comparison to a calibrated HATS on various soundcard and headphone combinations. The study of naturally occurring turbulent flows requires ability to collect empirical data down to the fine scales. While hotwire anemometry offers such ability, the open field studies are uncommon due to the cumbersome calibration procedure and operational requirements of hotwire anemometry, e.g., constant ambient properties and steady flow conditions. The combo probe-the combined sonic-hotfilm anemometer developed and tested over the last decade-has demonstrated its ability to overcome this hurdle. The old-er generation had a limited wind alignment range of 120 degrees and the in-situ calibration procedure was human decision based. This study presents the next generation of the combo probe design, and the new fully automated in-situ calibration procedure implementing deep learning. The elegant new design now enables measurements of the incoming wind flow in a 360-degree range. The improved calibration procedure is shown to have the robustness necessary for operation in everchanging open field flow and environmental conditions. This is especially useful with diurnally changing environments or non-stationary measuring stations, i.e., probes placed on moving platforms like boats, drones, and weather balloons. Together, the updated design and the new calibration procedure, allow for continuous field measurements with minimal to no human interaction, enabling near real-time monitoring of fine-scale turbulent fluctuations. Integration of these probes will contribute toward generation of a large pool of field data to be collected to unravel the intricacies of all scales of turbulent flows occurring in natural setups.

The key to accurate 3D shape measurement in Fringe Projection Profilometry (FPP) is the proper calibration of the measurement system. Current calibration techniques rely on phase-coordinate mapping (PCM) or back-projection stereo-vision (SV) methods. PCM methods are cumbersome to implement as they require precise positioning of the calibration target relative to the FPP system but produce highly accurate measurements within the calibration volume. SV methods generally do not achieve the same accuracy level. However, the calibration is more flexible in that the calibration target can be arbitrarily positioned. In this work, we propose a hybrid calibration method that leverages the SV calibration approach using a PCM method to achieve higher accuracy. The method has the flexibility of SV methods, is robust to lens distortions, and has a simple relation between the recovered phase and the metric coordinates. Multitude of antennas are typically used in microwave imaging systems. Here we outline a simple and effective calibration method for multiport imaging systems. By using only one additional component, an electronic calibration module (ECal), one port is calibrated and the calibration plane is thereby moved to the antenna connector. Assuming all antennas interact with the test phantom in the same way, the one-port calibration is transferred to all other antennas. For full calibration including the transmission path between antennas, the unknown thru technique is used. LINC--NIRVANA (LN) is an MCAO module currently mounted on the Rear Bent Gregorian focus of the Large Binocular Telescope (LBT). It mounts a camera originally designed to realize the interferometric imaging focal station of the telescopes. LN follows the LBT binocular strategy having two twin channels: a double Layer Oriented Multi-Conjugate Adaptive Optics system assisting the two arms, supplies high order wave-front correction. In order to counterbalance the field rotation, a mechanical derotation is applied for the two ground wave-front sensors, and an optical (K-mirror) one for the two high layers sensors, fixing the positions of the focal planes with respect to the pyramids aboard the wavefront sensors. Automating precision subtasks such as debridement (removing dead or diseased tissue fragments) with Robotic Surgical Assistants (RSAs) such as the da Vinci Research Kit (dVRK) is challenging due to inherent non-linearities in cable-driven systems. We propose and evaluate a novel two-phase coarse-to-fine calibration method. In Phase I (coarse), we place a red calibration marker on the end effector and let it randomly move through a set of open-loop trajectories to obtain a large sample set of camera pixels and internal robot end-effector configurations. This coarse data is then used to train a Deep Neural Network (DNN) to learn the coarse transformation bias. In Phase II (fine), the bias from Phase I is applied to move the end-effector toward a small set of specific target points on a printed sheet. For each target, a human operator manually adjusts the end-effector position by direct contact (not through teleoperation) and the residual compensation bias is recorded. This fine data is then used to train a Random Forest (RF) to learn the fine transformation bias. Subsequent experiments suggest that without calibration, position errors average 4.55mm. Phase I can reduce average error to 2.14mm and the combination of Phase I and Phase II can reduces average error to 1.08mm. We apply these results to debridement of raisins and pumpkin seeds as fragment phantoms. Using an endoscopic stereo camera with standard edge detection, experiments with 120 trials achieved average success rates of 94.5%, exceeding prior results with much larger fragments (89.4%) and achieving a speedup of 2.1x, decreasing time per fragment from 15.8 seconds to 7.3 seconds. We present a method to measure the relative spectral response of the Pierre Auger Observatory Fluorescence Detector. The calibration was done at wavelengths of 320, 337, 355, 380 and 405 nm using an end-to-end technique in which the response of all detector components are combined in a single measurement. A xenon flasher and notch-filters were used as the light source for the calibration device. The overall uncertainty is 5%., Comment: Submitted to Astroparticle Physics. The NASA Glenn Research Center 2019 Icing Research Tunnel cloud calibration results are presented in this paper. The current status of the cloud uniformity, liquid water content, and drop-size calibration results will be discussed. The goals achieved in this calibration were to establish a uniform cloud and to generate transfer functions from the inputs of airspeed, spray bar atomizing air pressure, and spray bar water pressure to the outputs of median volumetric diameter (drop size distributions) and liquid water content. This was completed for both 14 CFR Parts 25 and 29, Appendix C (“typical” icing) and Appendix O (supercooled large drop) conditions. The cloud uniformity from the Standard nozzles has remained the same as what was reported for the 2014 full calibration. Changes were made to the Mod1 nozzle cloud, resulting in higher liquid water content values associated with the Mod1 cloud.

This was done for both 14 CFR Parts 25 and 29, Appendix C ('typical' icing) and soon-to-be released Appendix O (supercooled large drop) conditions.

The inaugural calibration of the ice crystal and supercooled liquid water clouds generated in NASA Glenn's engine altitude test facility, the Propulsion Systems Lab (PSL) is reported herein. This calibration was in support of the inaugural engine ice crystal validation test. During the Fall of 2012 calibration effort, cloud uniformity was documented via an icing grid, laser sheet and cloud tomography. Water content was measured via multi-wire and robust probes, and particle sizes were measured with a Cloud Droplet Probe and Cloud Imaging Probe. The environmental conditions ranged from 5,000 to 35,000 ft, Mach 0.15 to 0.55, temperature from +50 to -35 F and relative humidities from less than 1 percent to 75 percent in the plenum.

In 2011, NASA Glenn s Icing Research Tunnel underwent a major modification to it s refrigeration plant and heat exchanger. This paper presents the results of the subsequent full cloud calibration. Details of the calibration procedure and results are presented herein. The steps include developing a nozzle transfer map, establishing a uniform cloud, conducting a drop sizing calibration and finally a liquid water content calibration. The goal of the calibration is to develop a uniform cloud, and to build a transfer map from the inputs of air speed, spray bar atomizing air pressure and water pressure to the output of median volumetric droplet diameter and liquid water content.

In the radiofrequency (RF) world, in order to characterize cables that do not conform to the typical 50-omega impedance, a time domain reflectometer (TDR) would probably be the simplest and quickest tool to attain this goal. In the real world, not every engineer has a TDR at their disposal; however, they most likely have a network analyzer available. Given a generic 50-omega vector network analyzer (VNA), we would like to make S-parameter measurements for non-50-omega devices (DUTs). For that, we utilize RF balanced/unbalanced transformers (called baluns for short), which are primarily used to match the impedance between the two VNA ports and the DUT's input and output ports, for the two-port S-parameter measurements.

The astrometric performance of the Space Interferometry Mission relies on precise measurements of the optical pathlength difference of the starlight through the arms of the interferometers that comprise the SIM instrument, and on precise relative distance between a set of fiducials that define the baselines of the interferometers.

The primary objectives are to compare radiometer attenuation with beacon attenuation and to compare sky temperature estimates with calculations using simultaneous meteorological data. Secondary objectives are: (1) noise diode and reference load measurements and (2) to adjust for outside temperature and component temperature changes.

Autonomous underwater vehicles (AUVs) are used in a wide range of underwater applications, ranging from seafloor mapping to industrial operations. While underwater, the AUV navigation solution commonly relies on the fusion between inertial sensors and Doppler velocity logs (DVL). To achieve accurate DVL measurements a calibration procedure should be conducted before the mission begins. Model-based calibration approaches include filtering approaches utilizing global navigation satellite system signals. In this paper, we propose an end-to-end deep-learning framework for the calibration procedure. Using stimulative data, we show that our proposed approach outperforms model-based approaches by 35% in accuracy and 80% in the required calibration time., Comment: 5 pages , 3 figures , 5 tables

Hand-eye calibration algorithms are mature and provide accurate transformation estimations for an effective camera-robot link but rely on a sufficiently wide range of calibration data to avoid errors and degenerate configurations. To solve the hand-eye problem in robotic-assisted minimally invasive surgery and also simplify the calibration procedure by using neural network method cooporating with the new objective function. We present a neural network-based solution that estimates the transformation from a sequence of images and kinematic data which significantly simplifies the calibration procedure. The network utilises the long short-term memory architecture to extract temporal information from the data and solve the hand-eye problem. The objective function is derived from the linear combination of remote centre of motion constraint, the re-projection error and its derivative to induce a small change in the hand-eye transformation. The method is validated with the data from da Vinci Si and the result shows that the estimated hand-eye matrix is able to re-project the end-effector from the robot coordinate to the camera coordinate within 10 to 20 pixels of accuracy in both testing dataset. The calibration performance is also superior to the previous neural network-based hand-eye method. The proposed algorithm shows that the calibration procedure can be simplified by using deep learning techniques and the performance is improved by the assumption of non-static hand-eye transformations., Comment: 6 pages, 4 main figures

The MMTO Adaptive optics exoPlanet characterization System (MAPS) is an ongoing upgrade to the 6.5-meter MMT Observatory on Mount Hopkins in Arizona. MAPS includes an upgraded adaptive secondary mirror (ASM), upgrades to the ARIES spectrograph, and a new AO system containing both an optical and near-infrared (NIR; 0.9-1.8 um) pyramid wavefront sensor (PyWFS). The NIR PyWFS will utilize an IR-optimized double pyramid coupled with a SAPHIRA detector: a low-read noise electron Avalanche Photodiode (eAPD) array. This NIR PyWFS will improve MAPS's sky coverage by an order of magnitude by allowing redder guide stars (e.g. K & M-dwarfs or highly obscured stars in the Galactic plane) to be used. To date, the custom designed cryogenic SAPHIRA camera has been fully characterized and can reach sub-electron read noise at high avalanche gain. In order to test the performance of the camera in a closed-loop environment prior to delivery to the observatory, an AO testbed was designed and constructed. In addition to testing the SAPHIRA's performance, the testbed will be used to test and further develop the proposed on-sky calibration procedure for MMTO's ASM. Ultra-Wideband (UWB) systems are becoming increasingly popular for indoor localization, where range measurements are obtained by measuring the time-of-flight of radio signals. However, the range measurements typically suffer from a systematic error or bias that must be corrected for high-accuracy localization. In this paper, a ranging protocol is proposed alongside a robust and scalable antenna-delay calibration procedure to accurately and efficiently calibrate antenna delays for many UWB tags. Additionally, the bias and uncertainty of the measurements are modelled as a function of the received-signal power. The full calibration procedure is presented using experimental training data of 3 aerial robots fitted with 2 UWB tags each, and then evaluated on 2 test experiments. A localization problem is then formulated on the experimental test data, and the calibrated measurements and their modelled uncertainty are fed into an extended Kalman filter (EKF). The proposed calibration is shown to yield an average of 46% improvement in localization accuracy.
