This publication follows the tradition of publishing selected papers from Pacific Islands Association of Libraries, Archives and Museums (PIALA) annual conferences. This 20th annual conference was held in Weno, Chuuk State, Federated States of Micronesia, November 15-19, 2010. The volume begins with a listing of the members of the PIALA 2010 Planning Committee and PIALA Officers and Executive Board, Acknowledgements, and the Conference program schedule. Joakim Peter, Director of the College of Micronesia-FSM Chuuk State campus, provided the keynote address "Building on Culture, Knowledge, and Information through Collaboration and Resource Sharing." The 2008 Central States Conference on the Teaching of Foreign Languages, a joint conference with the Michigan World Language Association, focused on learning about the diverse backgrounds and needs of today's students and discovering new ways to help them succeed in reaching the goal of language proficiency. A wide variety of workshops and sessions offered practical advice on how to deal with reluctant learners on a variety of levels. Immersion-type workshops and sessions were offered to help participants brush up on their language skills, and participants were brought up-to-date on topics such as foreign language advocacy, advanced placement, technology, assessment, culture, brain-based learning, and much more. In addition to "Best of" presentations from 15 states, the program included several encore presentations from last year's "All-Star" presenters. This volume offers the reader a wealth of research based approaches and strategies to language teaching and learning designed to assist the language educator in creating a learning environment that will motivate and engage all students in the language classroom. These articles focus on best practices representing theory-based instruction designed to optimize language communication skills and cultural knowledge for all learners.

This is the book of abstracts for the conference held in 2017 entitled: ''METADISCOURSE ACROSS GENRES: MAPPING INTERACTION IN SPOKEN & WRITTEN DISCOURSES'', also known as MAG2017. The 1st International Conference on Metadiscourse Across Genres took place in METU Northern Cyprus Campus, Cyprus between 30 March-1 April 2017 with the participation of Prof. Ken Hyland, Prof. Anna Mauranen and Prof. Annelie Adel as keynote speakers. This international conference aimed to disseminate current research work on Metadiscourse and related areas in line with various qualitative and quantitative approaches with special focuses on Discourse Analysis, Corpus Linguistics, Genre Analysis and eventually the first-of-its kind conference in the field of Metadiscourse has welcomed 110 participant and hosted 3 plenary talks and 94 research talks given by researchers from 40 countries from Japan, Mexico, Turkey to Botswana and United Kingdom. The book of abstracts includes the abstracts of the talks with various qualitative and quantitative approaches with special focuses on Discourse Analysis, Corpus Linguistics, Genre Analysis. We would like to acknowledge that the event was co-organized by individual researchers: Dr. Erdem Akbas (Erciyes University), Assoc Prof. Ciler Hatipoglu (Middle East Technical University) and Prof. Yasemin Bayyurt (Bogazici University) with the initial suggestion coming from Reza Abdi (University of Mohaghegh Ardabili).

The aim of the study was to evaluate how the media covered distance education practices carried out by the Turkish Ministry of National Education between March 16, 2020, and September 6, 2021. The study employed qualitative research methods, specifically the document analysis design. In this context, the study focused on newspapers as a media platform. The research assessed the perspectives on distance education from four newspapers with different ideologies. The primary objective of the study was to raise awareness of existing issues, inform the public, and promote action-oriented solutions, especially in the field of education. Within the scope of the study, instead of emphasizing biased or unbiased media, the fundamental role of the media, which is often more significant than commonly perceived, is underscored. Based on the findings of the research, it is emphasized that the media should be aware of the critical role it plays and that providing inaccurate or misleading information, particularly in the field of education, can have adverse consequences. Additionally, the study draws attention to how and to what extent the topic of distance education is addressed. As a result of the study, the importance of informing the society about the distance education process is discussed, emphasizing the need for accurate and effective communication in this regard. Intended for those interested in scientific research in journalism, the papers in this volume focus on conditions of journalism, journalism and reality, and methodology. The papers discuss the following topics: (1) research on the contents of newspapers and the working conditions for editorial staff; (2) the meanings and functions of audience in mass communication; (3) house organs in Yugoslavia; (4) political structure and representational form in United States and Italian television news; (5) the crisis of Norwegian journalism; (6) television news as a cultural discourse; (7) "the personal problem" or neo-moralism, alcohol and journalism; and (8) the program leader's persona in TV-information programs. To determine to what extent black African-American newspapers supported secondary desegregation efforts and to determine whether or not attitudes changed or remained constant after the initial ruling and after the 10th, 20th, and 30th, anniversaries of the May 17, 1954, "Brown versus Board of Education" decision, the editorial viewpoints of four African-American newspapers were analyzed. The newspapers were the "Los Angeles Sentinel,""Michigan Chronicle,""Norfolk Journal and Guide," and "New Pittsburgh Courier." Because of lack of availability only 10 editorials were analyzed. The data demonstrated that the 30th anniversary of the "Brown" decision in 1984 was not deemed significant enough by any of the newspapers to warrant a specific editorial statement. Findings indicated that the newspapers generally supported the original Supreme Court edict but became cynical in their editorial viewpoints as decades passed and the "all deliberate speed" mandate became one of "all deliberate delay." Due to the development of artificial intelligence and language-based software, automatic machines, which can generate news contents from data, are starting to be used in the editorial practice. Despite the fact that this field of editorial work is currently at its advent, it has been developing and improving relatively quickly. At present, robots for production of contents are implemented in editorial offices of large media, and are able to process huge amounts of data, while saving journalists' work. Robo-journalism, which is the result of an effective interconnection among informatics, statistics and reporting, is being vividly discussed not only in media practice, but also in professional circles. The study deals with robot journalism that uses intelligent software to produce news articles. Its application fundamentally redefines editorial routines, journalistic practices and existing models of editorial work. Media and journalism theorists are interested in the influence of robojournalism on the editing process, the journalistic profession, the journalist as a creative person and their competences. The authors of the paper intend to broaden the awareness of this dynamically developing segment of new coverage and to point out its selected aspects in relation to media practice, but also theoretical reflection.
