Abstract

Long recognized as the site of an important Civil War battle, considerable energy has been invested in educating the public about Monocacy National Battlefield. In the past decade, archaeologists have pursued multiple research projects at Monocacy in order to expand interpretation of the site and provide broader context for the battle. Most recently, excavations were undertaken to explore the slave village associated with an 18th- and 19th-century plantation, L'Hermitage. Though the data have not yet been fully incorporated into Monocacy's interpretive materials, they form the basis of an alternative to the traditional battlefield narrative. [ABSTRACT FROM AUTHOR]

Intense development pressure is threatening the fragile Monocacy National Battlefield in Maryland. At the time of the American Civil War, Monocacy Junction was a small but strategically important point where the main road to the District of Columbia crossed the Monocacy River. This convergence of transportation systems led both Union and Confederate armies to pass through here in 1862 on their way to Antietam, and again in 1863 on the way to Gettysburg. At this time, the park encompasses approximately 1,650 acres, almost all of which has been purchased or is covered by scenic easements.

According to the ROD the administration of MNB will be shifted to the rehabilitated Thomas House in Virginia and historic structures will be preserved and maintained.
