The article presents several references contributed by Marxists and non-Marxists in the International Congress of History of Science (ICHS) symposium titled as "Politically Engaged Scientists, 1920,1950: Science,Politics, Philosophy, History" in Beijing, on July 2005. This article presents information on MEDINFO 89, the sixth world congress on computers in medicine that will take place in Beijing, China on October 16-20, 1989. The major international congress dedicated to computers in medicine, MEDINFO has been held successfully in Stockholm (1974), Toronto (1977), Tokyo (1980), Amsterdam (1983) and Washington, D.C. (1986). Numerous sessions will be conducted simultaneously, and the congress will appeal to both beginners and experts in medical computing. The program will be comprised of presentations of research papers, descriptive papers, opinion and review papers, and will include demonstrations, workshops, tutorials, a software exchange and exhibits.

The development of the international convention and exhibition industry is very important for Beijing, which aims to be a World City ' . It is therefore necessary to investigate the significance of international convention site selection factors and the differences in meeting planners' perceptions about these. This article focuses on the meeting planners ' perspective and examines the decision-making factors in selecting Beiiing as an international convention destination This paper summarizes 23 convention site selection factors using a literature review and an in-depth interview. It also indicates the importance of convention site selection factors and the diferences in meeting planners ' perceptions using a questionnaire analysis. The questionnaire was designed in three parts, with both a Chinese and English edition. The importance and performance of convention site selection factors was measured in the first and second part based on a five-point Likert scale. Basic information from meeting planners was obtained in the third part. After a pre-test, the questionnaires were emailed to 500 randomly selected meeting planners and 226 returned the survey (45.2%) . Compared with previous related research, the response rate is satisfactory. Of the 226 meeting planners who returned surveys, 114 had hosted international conventions in Beiiing. Most respondents were professionals who had five years' working experience or more (56. 64%), were aged between 26 and 40 years (63. 72%), and at least had one college degree (79. 65%) . Most of the respondents ' organizations were not in Beiiing (76. 11%), and some were foreign meeting planners. In order of importance, the 23 convention site selection factors are: quality of convention services, suitability and standard of local infrastructure, quality of convention facilities, social and political stability, quality of convention planning assistance, geographic accessibility. The convenience application press of international conventions, research and development cooperation opportunities, overall attractiveness of Beiiing as an international convention destination, local ground transportation, government support, city image, choice of convention venues, quality of food and beverage, experience in hosting international conventions, entry formalities, media publicity creation, choice of accommodation, total cost of holding a convention, sightseeing attractions, climate, cost of airfares, and local people' s foreign language skiils. Compared with the conclusions of research carried out in 1997, the importance of convention site selection factors has changed markedly. Meeting planners now attach more importance to factors such as quality of convention services, quality of convention planning assistance and city image. Because of the many types of sponsorship available, the total cost of holding a convention is not important anymore. Climate, cost of airfares and local people' s foreign language skiils are stiil of least concern to meeting planners. In a highly competitive environment, it is imperative for convention cities to assess their strengths and weaknesses so that more effective marketing plans ( strategies and tactics) can be developed. Beiiing should take advantage of research and development cooperation opportunities and high quality hotels. Meeting planners who have held international conventions in this city are not satisfied with government regulations on holding international conventions and the general lack of government support. This paper suggests that measures should be taken to improve these areas. It also recommends that Beiiing authorities should put more emphasis on the service quality of meeting facilities, convention planning assistance, city image and destination marketing. In 1995, after the Fourth World Conference on Women in Beijing, the Government of Bangladesh adopted the strategy of mainstreaming women for its women population's development and advancement. As follow-up of the mainstreaming strategy, in 1997, the Government introduced direct election system for female members' reserved seats at the Union Parishads, which is the first/lowest level of civil administration. Consequently, two local level elections were held in 1997 and 2003, and approximately 13,000 women were elected as the Union Parishads members. Nonetheless, this sheer increase in numbers at the local administration has achieved very little in changing the women's positions or conditions in the society. This paper has tried to identify the causes of less effectiveness of the female members of Union Parishads, and has suggested some measures to rectify the situation. The article presents information on the 2005 Biennial Conference of the International Academy for the Study of Tourism (IAST) that was held in Beijing, China. IAST is a self-recruiting group of scholars following the honoured traditions of British clubs. Fellowship is not open to any fee paying associates. It can only be achieved by invitation of the confreres after a finicky selection process that includes a highly qualified quorum of affirmative ballots. IAST, founded in 1988, was one of the harbingers of the growing demand for excellence in tourism research and has tried to keep true to this goal since. At any rate, only active IAST fellows are invited to participate in the sessions, although each one of them has the right to invite one guest if the latter contributes a paper to the proceedings. IAST fellows have many different academic backgrounds and a plurality of research strategies. This makes a second specialty for IAST conferences. In order to accommodate a number of papers with no common focus, their leitmotiv has to be as encompassing as the one for this Ninth Biennial Session in Beijing.
