A 1-day old boy developed necrotising enterocolitis (NEC) while being treated with ampicillin, gentamicin, meropenem, and vancomycin as empiric antibiotic therapy. The boy showed symptoms such as a bloated abdomen, absent bowel sounds, and elevated inflammatory markers. After a series of medical interventions, including surgery to remove necrotic tissue, the boy was diagnosed with NEC and transferred to another department for further treatment of short bowel syndrome. It was concluded that the NEC was a result of the antibiotics administered. [Extracted from the article]
