A lot of talented children aspire to be professional athletes. They spend many hours each week practicing and competing in the hope of achieving this. To what extent should a parent permit, encourage or even force them to do so? Professional sporting success provides substantial goods and rewards. However, trying to achieve it imposes many costs on children, such as the diminishment of important childhood goods. I argue that these costs outweigh the potential rewards, especially given the improbability of success, and so parents should not try to maximise their children’s talents for professional success. I also show that how one weighs up the costs and rewards depends on one’s conception of childhood. Finally, I suggest that parents, qua member of society, may well have good reason to maximise their child’s talent, given the social benefits talent maximisation provides. I conclude by arguing that this does not outweigh parents’ duty to provide a good childhood for their children, which talent maximisation undermines. [ABSTRACT FROM AUTHOR]

Moral cognition has largely been studied via dilemmas in which making a utilitarian choice causes instrumental harm (negative dimension). Studies of utilitarianism link this behavior with socioemotional unresponsiveness. However, there is a positive dimension of utilitarianism in which one sacrifices the good of oneself or close others for the overall welfare. We measured utilitarian choices multidimensionally in a patient with behavioral variant frontotemporal dementia (bvFTD), incorporating dilemmas accounting for negative and positive dimensions. Despite socioemotional deficits our patient was highly utilitarian in the positive, dimension of utilitarianism. The Samoan-led Mau movements have dominated Samoan historiography. Based on popularized narratives, the storyline suggests that other key groups, namely religious institutions, were merely spectators. A revisionist historical approach challenges the popularized narrative of the movements; precisely, the notion that the London Missionary Society (LMS) remained ‘neutral’. LMS missionary Rev. James Edward Newell was instrumental in quelling potential battles between the Mau a Pule movement of Lauaki Mamoe and German Governor Wilhelm Solf between 1908 and 1909. Newell felt tugged into a precarious position by three forces during the movement: as a senior LMS missionary, a trusted Samoan friend, and ‘loyal’ to the German administration. An examination of Newell’s letters, German correspondences, and secondary sources suggests that despite Newell’s dilemma, he committed himself to the message of peace. Films deteriorate over time and archival methods are still being developed to prevent this. Digital technology enables the conversion of films, but there are various issues with digital approaches that present Indian archivists with the dilemma of choosing the appropriate one to film preservation. It is perceived that digital technology is inferior to film and, thus, archivists in India are struggling to preserve their film heritage for future generations. Film archivists, curators and restorers in India were interviewed as part of this study, with a thematic analysis conducted to understand the perceived insufficiency of digital preservation. Film archivists dislike digital technology but recognise its benefits, however, digital film preservation faces issues of originality, obsolescence, cost, resolution and legal aspects. Archivists suggested that digital archiving is not an alternative to film archiving but rather a complement and the study finds that the problems in digital approaches can be minimised through measures such as diligence, technological advancement, multiple copies and raising awareness which can prolong the film artefact in a digital archive. Environmental activism presents an ideological dilemma for environmentally concerned scientists, who must balance traditional scientific values of objectivity and impartiality with the urgency of the climate and ecological crisis. This paper presents a critical discursive analysis of interviews with 27 scientists from 11 countries. It details the linguistic repertoires scientists draw on and the subject positions adopted to manage this dilemma. We observed that scientists employ two strategies to reconcile their professional identities with their activism: redefining the scientist identity, and reframing the work that scientists do. The subject positions adopted broadly serve to legitimize action, such as arguing that activism as a scientist is objective and rational, or that being a scientist conveys a moral duty to advocate for scientific information. By analyzing how scientists negotiate conflicting identities and values, this research offers valuable insights into fostering informed decision-making and action in addressing urgent environmental challenges. Defined the connotation of traditional rural cultural inheritance and interpreted the significance of cultural inheritance. Summarized the positive practices of Beijing’s rural areas in recent years in inheriting agricultural culture, strengthening the protection of traditional villages, utilizing excellent traditional cultural concepts to govern villages, and promoting the development of cultural industries. Analyzed the difficulties faced by the inheritance of traditional rural culture in Beijing, mainly manifested as the gradual decline and disappearance of traditional village sunset, lack of awareness of traditional rural cultural values among farmers, the dissolution and loss of traditional rural culture caused by industrial development, and insufficient innovation in cultural inheritance. Group-Analytic View on Processes of Institutionalization in Feminist Anti-Violence-Activities: The Stony Path of Implementing Ideals The aim of this paper is to analyze and reflect on paradox development processes in feminist anti-violence activities based on experiences as supervisor. Starting point is the relevance of founding ideals, connected hopes and disappointments and their conscious and unconscious effects. First the development of anti-violent projects will be sketched out as social framework, followed by structural challenges through institutionalization and professionalization, ambivalent effects of feminist principles and supra-individual splitting mechanisms as a way of coping. The global dilemma of informal settlements persists alongside the fast process of urbanization. Various methods for analyzing remotely sensed images to identify informal settlements using semantic segmentation have been extensively researched, resulting in the development of numerous supervised and unsupervised algorithms. Texture-based analysis is a topic extensively studied in the literature. However, it is important to note that approaches that do not utilize a multiresolution strategy are unable to take advantage of the fact that texture exists at different spatial scales. The capacity to do online mapping and precise segmentation on a vast scale while considering the diverse characteristics present in remotely sensed images carries significant consequences. This research presents a novel approach for identifying informal settlements using multiresolution analysis and self-attention techniques. The technique shows potential for being resilient in the presence of inherent variability in remotely sensed images due to its capacity to extract characteristics at many scales and prioritize areas that contain significant information. Segmented pictures underwent an accuracy assessment, where a comparison analysis was conducted based on metrics such as mean intersection over union, precision, recall, F-score, and overall accuracy. The proposed method's robustness is demonstrated by comparing it to various state-of-the-art techniques. This comparison is conducted using remotely sensed images that have different spatial resolutions and informal settlement characteristics. In a variety of economic situations discrete agents choose one resource among several available resources and, once admitted to the resource of choice, divide it among fellow agents admitted there. The amount of the resource an agent gets is proportional to her relative ability to acquire this particular resource, what we refer to as an agent's weight at the resource. The relevant applications include students self-selecting into colleges, politicians self-selecting into races, and athletes self-selecting into teams. We find that this game has a pure-strategy Nash equilibrium in at least three special cases: 1) when agents have the same weight at each resource, 2) when all resources are the same, 3) when there are only two resources. In Chapter 12 of his book Material Beings (Van Inwagen, Peter. 1990. Material Beings. Ithaca: Cornell University Press) van Inwagen argues that there are no artefacts, or very few, certainly fewer than most people believe. Artisans very rarely create, at least in the sense of causing things to come into existence. The argument in Chapter 12 is a very powerful one. I do not think that it establishes van Inwagen's conclusion, but it does, I think, given its (plausible) premise, establish that if there are not far fewer material things in the world than we ordinarily believe, then there are far more. In this sense it establishes, as Russell once said, 'the truth about physical objects must be strange'. Furthermore, I argue at the end, we cannot avoid this conclusion even if we reject van Inwagen's premise. Thus the defender of our common sense ontology is caught on the horns of a dilemma. One of the primary goals of Pettit's The Birth of Ethics is to offer a novel defense of a form of naturalistic realism in metaethics, drawing on a kind of "counterfactual genealogy" for ethical thought and talk, in a community he dubs "Erewhon". We argue that Pettit's argument faces a deep dilemma. The dilemma begins by noting the reasonable controversy about which metaethical view is true of our ethical thought and talk. We then ask: is the thought and talk in Pettit's Erewhon apt for the same reasonable controversy? If so, this raises doubts about Pettit's case for naturalistic realism about Erewhonian "ethical" thought and talk. If not, this disanalogy between Erewhonian "ethical" thought and talk and our ethical thought and talk renders it difficult to argue smoothly from Erewhonian premises to conclusions about our own ethical thought and talk. We then consider an alternative use that someone might make of Pettit's discussion of Erewhon: as part of a conceptual ethics argument that we should use "ethical" concepts that are relevantly similarly to the ones described in Erewhon. Exemption from blameworthiness is bound to implicit or explicit claims of diminished agency, or even non-agency. This poses a dilemma in navigating moral relationships affected by mental illness. While it is crucial for assessments of responsibility to be responsive to the significance of mental illness, must this responsiveness come at a cost to symmetrical moral relations? In this paper we argue, contra recent critiques, that Strawsonian accounts of responsibility are able to navigate this dilemma, and can accommodate significant exculpation on the basis of mental illness while maintaining symmetrical relations. We understand this to be part of the larger recognition that while we have certain fundamental entitlements within our moral relationships, it is also possible to be over-entitled, and to expect too much of others. Our account draws, in particular, on the moral significance of difficulty. Difficulty is inherently scalar, and in drawing on this explanatory framework we explicate a theory of both excuse and exemption by degree. We argue for a significant realm of excuse on the basis of mental illness that is fully compatible with symmetrical relations. However, we also acknowledge the limits of this accommodation on Strawsonian grounds, and argue that these limits are justified and appropriate. [ABSTRACT FROM AUTHOR]

Logical realism is the metaphysical view asserting that the facts of logic exist and are mind-and-language independent. McSweeney argues that if logical realism is true, we encounter a dilemma. Either we cannot determine which of the two logically equivalent theories holds a fundamental status, or neither theory can be considered fundamental. These two conclusions together constitute what is known as the Unfamiliarity Dilemma, which poses significant challenges to our understanding of the epistemological and metaphysical features of logic. In this article, I present two strategies to address McSweeney's dilemma. If these arguments prove effective, they would demonstrate that our knowledge of logic is not susceptible to the skeptical concerns raised by McSweeney's hypothesis. [ABSTRACT FROM AUTHOR]

Intra-osseous hemangiomas are uncommon tumors that can present diagnostic and treatment dilemmas. Bone hemangiomas with papillary and glomeruloid growth patterns are exceptionally rare. We present an example of an intra-osseous hemangioma of the rib displaying aggressive features on both radiology and histology. Morphologically, prominent papillary and glomeruloid architectural patterns were observed, in addition to features of cavernous and capillary hemangiomas. Extensive extra-osseous soft tissue involvement was seen. Awareness of the diverse histological features and locally aggressive behavior of bone hemangiomas is important in avoiding over-interpretation as a malignant lesion. [ABSTRACT FROM AUTHOR]

Autonomous behaviors may raise ethical issues that agents must consider in their reasoning. Some approaches use deontic logics, while others consider a value-based argumentation framework. However, no work combines both modal logic and argumentation to reason about ethics. Hence, we propose a new argumentation framework where arguments are built from a n-ary multi-modal logic. It allows to express different kinds of operators, e.g. nullary choice or moral worth operators, dyadic deontic operators or mental states. However the standard attacks based on logical contradictions are no longer sufficient to catch an intuitive meaning for attacks. Hence, we enrich standard attacks by characterizing how oppositions between modal operators arise. Furthermore we show the standard logic-based attacks have a quasi-symmetry property, i.e. when an argument attacks another, this argument is necessarily attacked by another one. This article traces the informal institutionalization of the Norwegian Haugian revival during the first decades of the nineteenth century. The revival was the first nationwide popular movement in Norway and flourished in the footsteps of its protagonist Hans Nielsen Hauge (1771–1824). Lay preaching in religious assemblies was a core activity among the Haugians from the inception of the revival. As part of the institutionalization process, beliefs and practices related to lay ministry were both established and adapted. Although the institutionalization involved a significant break with previous teaching and practice, the Haugians themselves saw the adaptation of beliefs and practices mainly as a story of continuity, maintaining that the revival essentially remained the same. I argue that acknowledging both the changes in beliefs and practices, on the one hand, and the Haugians' claim to remaining the same, on the other hand, are key to understanding the development of the revival. Does migration pose a threat to welfare state legitimacy? We address this prominent question with a multilevel analysis of novel survey data, the 'Inequality Barometer', which includes individual and local-level context data in Germany (6208 individuals, up to 401 local districts). Our results suggest that the public is more reluctant to support welfare where the proportion of migrants at the local level is larger. This effect even persists when welfare is directed at groups that are perceived as more deserving of welfare support (like children, sick or older individuals) and when we examine the levels of employed migrants (that pay into the welfare state). We also find that these effects are moderated by economic risk. Particularly, we find that individuals facing higher economic risk support welfare less than their counterparts when exposed to migration. Future research should expand the local-level approach and investigate the causal mechanisms that the welfare-migration nexus is based on in more detail. [ABSTRACT FROM AUTHOR]

Sharenting, the practice of parents publicly sharing information about their children on social media, has become increasingly prevalent in recent years. The purpose of this study was to conduct a systematic literature review in order to evaluate existing publications that have empirically investigated the sharenting phenomenon and conceptualized its characteristics and possible consequences. Following Preferred Reporting Items for Systematic Reviews and Meta‐Analysis guidelines, 61 studies were reviewed. Based on the point of view and focus of the studies, six themes emerged: characteristics of sharenting, children's privacy, professional sharenting, children's perspectives, factors affecting sharenting, and social media dilemmas. The review highlights the growing prevalence of sharenting and provides a comprehensive overview of the empirical investigations and conceptualizations of the phenomenon. The findings have implications for parents, professionals, and policymakers, and opportunities for future research to further understand the complex and multifaceted nature of sharenting. Building upon the rich tradition of research on governmentality, this paper introduces the notion of market-based governance (i.e. the coordinated efforts of companies to align the conduct of its constituents with the institutional norms, values and interests of the company), and presents an empirical investigation of market-based governance in the context of a sharing economy platform, Airbnb. Whereas existing governmentality research has focused on specific discourses or aspects of governance in the marketplace, our aim is to develop broader-spectrum conceptual tools for 'ordering' the increasingly multifaceted forms of marked-based governance. We show that Airbnb mobilizes three distinct logics of governance (i.e. the regulatory, competitive and communitarian) which subsume diverse modes of power (i.e. the sovereign, disciplinary and pastoral) that contribute to the cultivation of governable subjects (i.e. the compliant subject, entrepreneurial subject and community member). The theoretical framework developed in this work is applied to critically reflect on emergent forms of market-based governance, the dilemmas of multi-logic governance and the uneven geographies of market-based governance. This article discusses the increasingly important roles of hospice care in Chinese society, and points out that the development of hospice care in China is often restricted by certain factors. Based on a qualitative study, it examines the ethical dilemmas faced by hospice care, including life, medicine, family, and society. It puts forward specific countermeasures for terminal patients, medical personnel, family members, and social work related to hospice care, and argues that the accessibility, availability, acceptability, and effectiveness of hospice care services should be improved from multiple dimensions, such as policy support, service supply, social atmosphere, and individual participation. Written as a letter to Galileo, an education graduate student narrates from course experiences that deepened her understandings of Galileo and natural and intellectual properties underlying his works. Having taken the Galileo-themed course with Elizabeth Cavicchi at MIT's Edgerton Center in three prior terms, on taking it a fourth time, this student, the paper's author, developed and documented perceptive observations of learning. Geometry instruction, as these classmates experienced in school, had equipped them with superficial, rigid access to similar triangles and ratio relations—the mathematical tools of Galileo. While applying these tools in class activities, the classmates faced confusion, dilemmas, and discrepancies. By giving themselves the space to work through these "troubles", classmates initiated their own "learning opportunities". New resilient, flexible understandings arose. Students were no longer confined by prior formulaic rules. The student author discerned a new Euclidean relationship of proportionalities among triangles constructed between parallel lines. These developments are articulated as the experiences arose, providing an analysis and immediacy that is rarely observed or documented frankly by educators and learners. A practitioner of the pedagogy critical exploration in the classroom based on researches of Eleanor Duckworth, Jean Piaget and Bärbel Inhelder, the teacher supported classmates in delving into their questions, which were not expected in advance. Class activities included: observing objects in perspective; collectively working through Euclid's definition of same ratio (in Elements Book 5) on their own terms; investigating errors arising in using a laser-cut prototype instrument based on Galileo's geometrical compass; and exploring a fulcrum balance. Learners' own curiosity opened up areas that they otherwise ignored. How is it ever possible to teach the spirit and method of scientific inquiry? How is it ever possible for anybody to learn it? What it takes for scientific inquiry to take root, develop, and grow? The details of a student/author finding her own ways into deep questions, and making sense of them, reveal the strengths of learning this way. In the background, we see the ways of the teacher. Recent studies in active learning, particularly in uncertainty sampling, have focused on the decomposition of model uncertainty into reducible and irreducible uncertainties. In this paper, the aim is to simplify the computational process while eliminating the dependence on observations. Crucially, the inherent uncertainty in the labels is considered, i.e. the uncertainty of the oracles. Two strategies are proposed, sampling by Klir uncertainty, which tackles the exploration–exploitation dilemma, and sampling by evidential epistemic uncertainty, which extends the concept of reducible uncertainty within the evidential framework, both using the theory of belief functions. A pedagogical dilemma occurs when an in‐class event or external factor challenges a teacher's principles or instructional practices and compels the teacher to resolve the dilemma. This article focuses on how resolving dilemmas can enhance the conceptual understanding of both student teachers and their supervisors. The supervisory setting this article describes—university instructors in Japan supervising preservice and in‐service teachers—has not been extensively researched. The article presents three case studies: two on supervising preservice teachers and one on supervising an in‐service teacher. Although approaches to supervision emphasize the facilitative aspect, the case studies of the preservice teachers exhibited circumstances more conducive to a directive‐oriented approach. Nevertheless, with the assistance of the supervisors, the preservice teachers were able to develop episodic knowledge of pedagogical concepts through navigating the dilemmas they experienced. The case study with the in‐service teacher, on the other hand, required a more facilitative approach to supervision. It suggests that the supervisor should understand and accommodate the pedagogical concepts under which the teacher operates to provide useful support in resolving classroom‐based dilemmas. This work aims to investigate the effects of co-determination in a game-theoretic setting by considering network externalities in consumption. The received theoretical literature, so far focused only on standard (non-network) industries, showed that co-determination might emerge as the sub-game perfect Nash equilibrium (SPNE) of a non-cooperative Cournot duopoly, but this outcome generates a prisoner's dilemma. The present research shows that (positive) network externalities may solve the prisoner's dilemma and let co-determination become a Pareto-efficient SPNE with homogeneous or heterogeneous products. In a network industry, co-determination becomes a Pareto-superior institution for society, as firms, consumers and workers are better off than under profit maximisation. Purpose: Digitalization and multi-channel strategy have appeared as recurrent themes in retailing for years, yet some major international as well as domestic mass retailers have chosen to retain a single, physical channel focus for customer transactions. These retailers, despite the digital mindset preoccupying the retailing sector, have chosen to rely fully, or predominantly, on their stores to generate revenues. A number of questions arise from this approach. This paper aims to understand the rationale for marketing and strategic practices which appear to go against the dominant, strongly digitally oriented, discourses and practices in the field of retailing. Why do some retailers choose not to add a digital transactional channel? Are there defensible reasons for this choice? Can such a strategy successfully create value? Design/methodology/approach: This research is based on a qualitative, multiple case study of the strategies adopted by Primark (fashion) and Aldi (food), two major retailers that retain a largely single-channel transaction focus, in France and the UK. Findings: This research suggests that some retailers may still be able to succeed by maintaining a single-transactional physical channel to avoid a cost trap which extensive moves towards digitalization of transactions might mean for them. In such circumstances, refusing to adopt a digital value proposition may be a means of preserving the success of their original business model. Originality/value: Despite the weight of academic and practitioner discourses on the urge to undertake digital transformation, this work provides a comprehensive illustration of the rationale for sticking to a single physical channel to preserve the profitability of a traditional store-based business model. In this article we study the social dynamic of temporal partitioning congestion games (TPGs), in which participants must coordinate an optimal time-partitioning for using a limited resource. The challenge in TPGs lies in determining whether users can optimally self-organize their usage patterns. Reaching an optimal solution may be undermined, however, by a collectively destructive meta-reasoning pattern, trapping users in a socially vicious oscillatory behavior. TPGs constitute a dilemma for both human and animal communities. We developed a model capturing the dynamics of these games and ran simulations to assess its behavior, based on a 2×2 framework that distinguishes between the players' knowledge of other players' choices and whether they use a learning mechanism. We found that the only way in which an oscillatory dynamic can be thwarted is by adding learning, which leads to weak convergence in the no-information condition and to strong convergence in the with-information condition. We corroborated the validity of our model using real data from a study of bats' behaviour in an environment of water scarcity. We conclude by examining the merits of a complexity-based, agent-based modelling approach over a game-theoretic one, contending that it offers superior insights into the temporal dynamics of TPGs. The present article investigates key dilemmas in collective legal mobilization initiatives in the field of asylum and migrants' rights. Focusing on my own experiences from working in the Asylum Commission -- a trans-sectional mobilization initiative that ran in Sweden from 2019 to 2022, involving researchers, civil society representatives, and professionals -- I analyze two central dilemmas that characterized our work. First, I consider how we collectively struggled for the legal right to asylum and through this struggle also reproduced injustices and potential border control harms which are embedded in asylum regulations. Second, I analyze how the Commission strived to provide a knowledge-based account of the consequences of legislative changes post the long summer of migration in 2015 that would have an impact on future legislation, while simultaneously taking an open stand in solidarity with people who were excluded from the legislative process; i.e., asylum seekers. The article underlines the need for sociolegal research that highlights ways to address dilemmas in legal mobilization work and offers empirical insights from collective mobilization for migrants' rights in a Northern European country. The introduction of exoskeletons by many companies has often resulted in potential users not wanting to wear them. Evaluations of the exoskeleton reveal benefits of use, including ergonomic advantages and a reduction of work-related musculoskeletal disorders. How can this contradiction be explained? By searching the available literature, we can identify the methods used to develop these devices and the methods employed to evaluate their acceptance and benefit. By looking at the product from different viewpoints and involving different disciplines, we will get to the root of this discrepancy. Our findings indicate that the product definition, development focus, and evaluation methods do not sufficiently and adequately address the primary goal of exoskeletons. The development of such devices should be prioritized not only for the delivery of support but also for the motivation of the user. I discuss how five reasonably sounding assumptions lead to a dilemma — the Page-time paradox — which appears to challenge a conventional statistical mechanical underpinning of black hole thermodynamics. By inspecting the conceptual subtleties behind each hypothesis, I list questions that require clarification before the puzzle can be deemed paradoxical. I devote particular attention to using thermodynamic arguments for a system that never reaches equilibrium. Polar regions are critically implicated in our understanding of global climate change. This is particularly the case for the Arctic, where positive feedback loops and climate tipping points enhance complexity and urgency. Half of the Arctic and much of the world's permafrost zone lie within Russian territory. Heightened geopolitical tensions, however, have severely damaged scientific collaboration between Russia and previously well established academic partners in western countries. Isolation is now causing increasingly large data gaps in arctic research that affect our ability to make accurate predictions of the impact of climate change on natural and societal systems at all scales from local to global. Here, we argue that options to resume both practical knowledge of collaborative working and flows of research data from Russia for global arctic science must continue to be asserted, despite an increasing tendency for the Arctic to become disconnected. Time is short, as preparations for the fifth International Polar Year begin to gather momentum. While sanctions remain in place, efforts to foster peer to peer connections and re-activate effective institutional cooperation are vital to address the grand challenges of global climate change. The triple humanitarian, development, and peace nexus is rising in prominence to promote better coordination between actors and actions. In this article, we examine three key challenges regarding the addition of peace to the double humanitarian–development nexus: how (1) the peace component affects the humanitarian principles; (2) projects adapt to differing timescales of activities; and (3) donor financing strategies and funding modalities affect the nexus implementation. Methodologically, we analyse projects in Kenya, Pakistan, the Philippines, and Indonesia, conduct a literature review and 55 interviews. Our findings show that incorporating peace into the humanitarian–development nexus requires systemic and cultural shifts in how international aid is delivered and accounted for, including, in some cases, a move away from project-based approaches. The main implications of this research are that adding peace to the nexus approach requires increased coordination and a critical rethink of humanitarian and development systems across political and operational actors. The development of artificial womb technology (AWT) is continuing to proceed and raises important ethical and theological questions for Christians. While there has been extensive secular discourse on artificial wombs in recent years, there has been minimal Christian engagement with this topic. There are broadly two primary uses of artificial womb technology: first, ectogestation, which is a form of enhanced neonatal care, where only some of the gestation period takes place in an artificial womb, and second, ectogenesis, where the entire period of gestation occurs in an artificial womb. It is plausible that some form of ectogestation in the latter weeks or months of pregnancy could be possible within a decade or so, while ectogenesis for humans remains far more speculative. Ectogestation is likely to significantly reduce maternal and neonatal morbidity and mortality, and so there is a strong prima facie case for supporting its development. Ectogenesis, however, may bring several challenges, including the further commodification of children, and the potential pathologizing of pregnancy and childbirth. Its long-term effects on those created through this process are also unknown. If it becomes ubiquitous, we may also find the central theological significance of pregnancy and birth diminished. The dilemma for Christians is that the development of seemingly unproblematic ectogestation is likely to normalize the use of artificial gestation, and, in time, pave the way for ectogenesis. Background: Liver fibrosis poses a significant public health challenge given its elevated incidence and associated mortality rates. Diffusion‐Weighted Imaging (DWI) serves as a non‐invasive diagnostic tool for supporting the identification of liver fibrosis. Deep learning, as a computer‐aided diagnostic technology, can assist in recognizing the stage of liver fibrosis by extracting abstract features from DWI images. However, gathering samples is often challenging, posing a common dilemma in previous research. Moreover, previous studies frequently overlooked the cross‐comparison information and latent connections among different DWI parameters. Thus, it is becoming a challenge to identify effective DWI parameters and dig potential features from multiple categories in a dataset with limited samples. Purpose: A self‐defined Multi‐view Contrastive Learning Network is developed to automatically classify multi‐parameter DWI images and explore synergies between different DWI parameters. Methods: A Dense‐fusion Attention Contrastive Learning Network (DACLN) is designed and used to recognize DWI images. Concretely, a multi‐view contrastive learning framework is constructed to train and extract features from raw multi‐parameter DWI. Besides, a Dense‐fusion module is designed to integrate feature and output predicted labels. Results: We evaluated the performance of the proposed model on a set of real clinical data and analyzed the interpretability by Grad‐CAM and annotation analysis, achieving average scores of 0.8825, 0.8702, 0.8933, 0.8727, and 0.8779 for accuracy, precision, recall, specificity and F‐1 score. Of note, the experimental results revealed that IVIM‐f, CTRW‐β, and MONO‐ADC exhibited significant recognition ability and complementarity. Conclusion: Our method achieves competitive accuracy in liver fibrosis diagnosis using the limited multi‐parameter DWI dataset and finds three types of DWI parameters with high sensitivity for diagnosing liver fibrosis, which suggests potential directions for future research. This article discusses the challenges and dilemmas faced in ensuring children's rights and wellbeing in the Nordic countries. Despite being regarded as frontrunners in this field, the Nordic countries still struggle to ensure equal rights for children and face various challenges to their wellbeing. The article focuses on the implementation of Article 12 of the UNCRC, which addresses children's right to participation, and highlights the difficulties in achieving this right in various contexts. The contributions to this Special Issue emphasize the need for a more child-centric approach to policy and practice in order to ensure children's participation and wellbeing. We introduce a novel game where a decaying atmospheric quality, modeled as a stock variable determining the payoff externality, can be counteracted through individual mitigation efforts. It encompasses three characteristics of climate change as a social dilemma: (a) the continuous nature of climate degradation, (b) the constant influx of emissions resulting from human economic activities, and (c) the greater efficacy of early mitigation actions. We report findings from an experiment where, across four treatments, we manipulate the starting atmospheric quality and introduce inequality in the endowments employed to mitigate. Results indicate that subjects fail to mitigate in early periods, an individually rational strategy. We do not find differences between treatments at the aggregate level. However, participants treat their groupmates' past mitigation as a strategic substitute for their own mitigation (i.e., if others' mitigation increase, participants reduce their mitigation). Introduction: Thyroid nodules pose a frequent clinical dilemma, requiring the use of precise and expedient diagnostic methods. The effectiveness of the Thyroid Imaging Reporting and Data System (TIRADS) in relation to histopathology, which is considered the standard method, continues to be a prominent area of investigation. TIRADS provides a systematic evaluation based on ultrasound imaging. The primary objective of this study was to evaluate the reliability of the Thyroid Imaging Reporting and Data System (TIRADS) in the assessment of thyroid nodules, in comparison with histopathological findings. Methods: A retrospective design was employed to analyze data obtained from a sample of 100 patients, ranging in age from 19 to 82 years. The main objective of the study was to assess ultrasonography (USG) findings using the Thyroid Imaging Reporting and Data System (TIRADS) as the major outcome measure. The secondary outcome measure was based on histological evaluations. Multiple statistical tests were utilized, such as linear regression and the kappa statistic. Results: The outcomes of this study indicate a significant association between TIRADS and histopathology results, particularly in the higher risk groups. The study findings indicate that the diagnostic value of TIRADS III, IV, and V is supported by the respective malignancy risks of 4.1%, 90%, and 100%. Conclusion: The appropriate utilization of TIRADS can function as a dependable first method for evaluating thyroid nodules, although it is essential to supplement this approach with histological examinations in order to obtain a thorough understanding. Arming at the coexistence dilemma of inventory overhang and shortage of different maintenance equipment supply nodes, a steady-state coefficient of a supply node has been described with which contains inventory level, the support degree between nodes each other, the demand status of the area guaranteed by the node and the cost of risk when the demand cannot be met. The steady-state coefficient of the inventory network was calculated on the base of all of support nodes. The active adustment is carried out flowing the corresponding algorithm according to the gap between the steady-state coefficient and the threshold which has been set before. The scientific, automatic and intelligent level of equipment adjustment can be greatly improved, consequently the success rate of maintenance support is improved if the passive stock adjustment is combined be- cause of out of stock at the same time. The paper discusses the ethical and methodological issues related to gatekeepers in social work research, often represented by social service professionals. This collaboration brings specific challenges, dilemmas, and benefits. A qualitative research strategy was used to explore research fatigue in the context of gatekeeping and its implications for ethics in social work research, particularly as it relates to marginalized and vulnerable groups. Eighteen interviews were conducted with researchers and gatekeepers. Constructivist grounded theory was used to analyze the data and the computer software program Atlas.ti was used to process the data. The results of the analysis are presented through three main themes: the specifics of gatekeeping in social work research; the time, emotional and ethical burden of research; and the search for new forms of collaboration and overcoming research fatigue. The research suggests that identifying the dynamics of research fatigue is key to minimizing the negative impacts on research practice and bridging the gap between research and practice in social work. In future studies, time dedicated to transparent communication, feedback, sharing research findings and building partnerships with social work practitioners and their clients could be an important element in preventing research fatigue. We proposed a neighbor selection mechanism based on memory and target payoff, where the target payoff is the maximum value of the group's average expected payoff. According to this mechanism, individuals prioritize selecting neighbors whose average payoffs in the last M rounds are close to the target payoff for strategy learning, aiming to maximize the group's expected payoff. Simulation results on the grid-based Prisoner's Dilemma and Snowdrift games demonstrate that this mechanism can significantly improve the group's payoff and cooperation level. Furthermore, the longer the memory length, the higher the group's payoff and cooperation level. Overall, the combination of memory and target payoff can lead to the emergence and persistence of cooperation in social dilemmas as individuals are motivated to cooperate based on both their past experiences and future goals. Human games are inherently diverse, involving more than mere identity interactions. The diversity of game tasks offers a more authentic explanation in the exploration of social dilemmas. Human behavior is also influenced by conformity, and prosociality is a crucial factor in addressing social dilemmas. This study proposes a generalized prisoner's dilemma model of task diversity that incorporates a conformity-driven interaction. Simulation findings indicate that the diversity of multi-tasks and the path dependence contribute to the flourishing of cooperation in games. Conformity-driven interactions also promote cooperation. However, this promotion effect does not increase linearly, and only appropriate task sizes and suitable proportions of conformity-driven interactions yield optimal results. This paper deals with compatibility of space‐time kernels with (either) full, spatially dynamical, or space‐time compact support. We deal with the dilemma of statistical accuracy versus computational scalability, which are in a notorious trade‐off. Apparently, models with full support ensure maximal information but are computationally expensive, while compactly supported models achieve computational scalability at the expense of loss of information. Hence, an inspection of whether these models might be compatible is necessary. The criterion we use for such an inspection is based on equivalence of Gaussian measures. We provide sufficient conditions for space‐time compatibility. As a corollary, we deduce implications in terms of maximum likelihood estimation and misspecified kriging prediction under fixed domain asymptotics. Close-up research on the far right comes with inherent challenges related to issues of power, justice, and ethics, which are often gendered and intersect with other axes of inequality, like race, ethnicity, religion, and sexuality, adding complexity to research. We approach these challenges from an ethics of care perspective, reflecting on how researchers can navigate ethical dilemmas related to the inherent relationality of research, contextual and situated decision-making, and emotions. States in conflict often have divergent interpretations of the past. They blame each other for starting the conflict and view their own actions as justified retaliation, which makes them reluctant to cooperate. This phenomenon, while common in international relations, is not well understood by existing formal theories of cooperation. In the context of the Repeated Prisoner's Dilemma framework, we show that strategies that demand atonement for past misdeeds are outperformed by strategies that do not. The latter are able to get out of retaliatory cycles and return to cooperation more quickly when there are divergent perceptions of the past. We conclude with a case study of Chinese and U.S. responses to the Tiananmen protests of 1989. China and the United States strongly disagree about the cause of the Tiananmen uprising and the legitimacy of the Chinese response, but nevertheless returned to cooperation after a limited period of mutual punishment. Writing in the context of the call for greater diversity, this short commentary makes a dual argument about the need to 'un-discipline' the discipline of International Relations. First: I return to an argument I made many years ago: the need to 'Forget IR Theory' and to explore the key issues in global politics without being constraint by the boundaries of existing debates. Key political problems, from climate change and pandemics, are far too complex to be understood as uniquely international phenomena and through the lenses of disciplinary debates. Second: to un-discipline is not to abandon the study of international relations. Quite the contrary, forgetting the constraining boundaries of academic disciplines can involve engaging back with the discipline of International Relations but, crucially, not on its own terms and not through the debates that have pre-set the boundaries of what is and is not thinkable. Researching the question of how the Roman Catholic Church (RCC), and by extension other institutional systems, respond or do not respond to the lived reality of abuse and its cover-up cannot be done without seeking to understand the underlying issue: What is the RCC responding (or not responding) to? One elucidating and perhaps surprising answer lies in the little and often misunderstood word vulnerability. Vulnerability, most probably counter-intuitively, has in fact the power to enhance violence or to reverse its destructive influence. This thought forms the basis for an exploration into what Professor Dr. Hildegund Keul has named the vulnerability and expenditure paradox. The logic in both of them seems understandable and straightforward. Yet, when genuinely understood, they are unsettling. They reveal an uncomfortable dilemma, a reality check and, ultimately, a choice as the paradox raises the rather earthly question: do we attempt to cheat death and therefore lose life, or do we opt for "creation through loss"? The first might, though linked to violence, lead to a feeling of security and invulnerability. The second exemplifies the passion of authentic suffering, humility and identity dependence. This article examines church–state relations in the early period of the People's Republic of China (PRC) by scrutinising the thoughts and the administration of Chao Tzu-chen—a prominent Chinese Christian leader—at Yenching University's School of Religion and its successor organisation. This article largely relies on the archives of the Hong Kong Sheng Kung Hui, delving into Chao's psychological conflicts and the role of the Anglican churches in Chao's plan for the separation of the School of Religion from the university. It argues that Chao Tzu-chen's self-contradictions in his public versus private expressions after 1949 signify his disillusionment in fostering the convergence between Christianity and Communism, as demonstrated in his dilemma regarding church–state relations. Although Chao tried to adapt to the new political order by urging Chinese churches to offer practical and concrete social services, he continued his independent, critical theological reflections on the indigenisation of Christianity, as reflected in his private portrayal of the incompatibility between Christianity and Communism, and in his close connection with foreign churches in his fund-raising campaign. Moreover, apart from highlighting the importance of the Hong Kong Anglican church in financially supporting the Yenching School of Religion, this article seeks to contribute to academic research of Chinese higher education in the 1950s through examining how the Chinese Communist Party's remolding of the School put an end to the emerging public sphere of a civil society. It reveals that this liberal Christian institute, which lost its control over curriculum design and the right to accept foreign funds, was quickly converted into a government-funded, socialist theological college in service of two masters: the Party and the Church. Background Decompression sickness (DCS) is a well-known risk associated with scuba diving, particularly in people with right-to-left shunt, such as patent foramen oval (PFO). Herein, we present a unique case of late PFO permeabilization after closure. Case summary A 26-year-old male diver was diagnosed with DCS following a dive at 36 m. He underwent PFO closure with a STARFLEX® prosthesis. Ten years later, the patient was presented with recurrent manifestations suggestive of DCS. The performed diagnostic work-up detects a permeabilization of the implanted prosthesis, and he was treated with a conservative approach. Discussion This case highlights the challenges in the management of PFO in divers and raises concerns about the long-term efficiency of PFO closure and the impact of diving-related factors on prosthesis patency.
