The article profiles Kricket Nimmons, a black transgender woman from the rural U.S. South who was one of the first New York City residents to undergo gender-affirming surgery paid for by Medicaid. According to the author, Nimmons' experiences of childhood abuse, HIV infection, poverty, incarceration, and suicide attempts reflect the challenges facing many other black transgender women. Details on New York City services for HIV-positive and transgender people are presented. Depictions of transgender people in popular culture are discussed.
