This article discusses the mental health characteristics of refugee children. The number of forcibly displaced people has tripled since 1997, with over 36 million recognized as refugees in 2022. Refugee children make up almost 50% of this population, and they are disproportionately impacted by the physical and mental health consequences of displacement. Refugees experience more severe psychosocial adversities compared to non-refugee immigrants, including greater poverty, family separation, and uncertainty. The mental health of refugee children is closely tied to the well-being of their caregivers, and those who are separated from their caregivers often experience worse mental health outcomes. Refugees are at a higher risk for mental health conditions such as PTSD and affective disorders due to the traumatic life events they have experienced before, during, and after migration. The author, who is a former child refugee from Vietnam, shares his own experiences to illustrate the stressors faced by refugee families. [Extracted from the article]
