A study published in the Journal of Drugs in Dermatology found significant associations between melasma and various comorbidities, including hypertension and hormonal contraception use. The study evaluated 41,283 patients with melasma and an equal number of matched control individuals. Among those with melasma, 25% had hypertension and 24% used hormonal contraception, which were the most commonly associated risk factors. Additionally, the study found that certain races and ethnicities, such as Asian and Hispanic, were significantly associated with melasma. The authors suggest that understanding these risk factors can improve the management and monitoring of patients with melasma. However, it is important to note that the study had limitations, including its retrospective design and inability to establish causality. [Extracted from the article]
