In his presidential address, entitled "Attacking on Social Work's Three Fronts," Shelby M. Harrison showed how social work was meeting the war challenge, first by providing skilled services in the immediate war program to the soldier and his family; second, by keeping up the home morale through the "day-by-day performance of social work's essential duties" serving the poor, the misguided, the sick, the imprisoned, the crippled, the jobless, the maladjusted, and the rest; and third, by planning for post-war reconstruction on a world-wide scale. Another speaker described the social work goal, as follows: "There may be few opportunities left for pioneering in the exploration of new territories or the exploitation of new resources, but breathtaking opportunities open up before us for pioneering in the development of relations between men and between nations."

The article focuses on the book "Social Mobility in the Caste System in India. An Interdisciplinary Symposium," edited by James Silverberg. In the book, author aim to further an understanding of the nature, extent and significance of social mobility in a caste system and to uncover the mechanisms and determinants involved. The book offers a review of the sociological concern with social mobility in the caste system as a general set of processes. A set of four papers presents and evaluates evidence concerning social mobility, based in three instances on recent first-hand observations and in the fourth on data extracted from the medieval period by the techniques of the historian. The first two papers are the products of anthropological field research in rural communities: a South Indian case by researcher Edward B. Harper, who combines ethnographic and ethnohistorical methods; a North Indian case by researcher William L. Rowe, who gathered his ethnographic data not only among the Caubans of the village in which he lived but also from their city-dwelling caste fellows, the politicians and other professionals whom he interviewed in Bombay, India and several urban centres of North India.

The article focuses on the book "A Psychology of Human Strengths: Fundamental Questions and Future Directions for a Positive Psychology," edited by Lisa G. Aspinwall and Ursula M. Staudinger. Positive psychology is the science of human strengths: energy, optimism, perseverance, kindness, humor, enthusiasm, ingenuity and more. The 23 papers collected in the volume under review are the product of a 1999 conference of scholars in this burgeoning branch of psychology. The book should have been of great interest, especially to psychotherapists. The 44 authors include leading researchers, among them Daniel Kahneman, winner of a Nobel Prize, and Martin E.P. Seligman, a president of the American Psychological Association and the most productive of the positive psychologists. Yet this book, like many conference-based books, is a disappointment destined to slumber unread on library shelves.

The article presents information about the book "Frequency and the Emergence of Linguist Structure," edited by Joan Bybee and Paul Hopper. The papers in this book were originally presented at a symposium on the title topic which was held at Carnegie Mellon University in 1999. Although the focus of the book is not exclusively historical, frequency and language change are linked in several chapters: frequency as it drives grammaticalization, frequency as it promotes sound change, frequency as inhibits analogical reformation. The perspective reflected in these papers is that structure follows use, and grammar emerges around a core of frequently used collocations at every level of grammar.

The article reports on the tenth congress of the European Society for Rural Sociology held recently at Cordoba, Spain. The reason for the existence of this scientific society is that people feel it worthwhile to communicate with each other. In recent years, the European Society gradually moved from a society focused mainly on European agricultural problems approached from various disciplines, to a society of rural sociologists who are occupied with agricultural and rural problems the world over. This trend will make the Society a more valuable forum for its actual and potential members. The recent congress was not only an occasion for intensified scientific communication, but was also an opportunity for several committees of the Society to hold their meetings.

The article presents proceedings of the business meeting of the Association of the Sociological Study of Jewry as of September 1, 1976 in New York City. The meeting was called to order by association president Samuel Z. Klausner. Initially minutes of previous meeting were circulated and adopted. The Secretary's report on membership and finances were circulated and adopted. The president reported that the Executive Board had authorized the launching of a new journal by the association to be called "Contemporary Jewry, a Journal of Sociological Inquiry." The journal will be published with the technical assistance of the Transaction Consortium, with which the association had a contract on an issue-by-issue basis, beginning with 1977 issue. The president also presented to the members of the association a proposal to form a series of committees dealing with areas such as regional affairs, international affairs, textbooks, employment and social policy research.

The article focuses on the symposium entitled "The Applebaum-Hébert Report." By the 1950s, the principle of state support for the arts, broadly defined, was well established. A multiplicity of programs and agencies emerged at the federal level following the work of the Royal Commission on National Development in the Arts, Letters, and Sciences in 1951. Needless to say, this development of the relation between the state and cultural production proceeded hand in hand with the centralization of the Canadian state. The report is the latest contribution to this development. Accordingly, any evaluation of the report must be addressed to the relations between the state and cultural production. To date, most of the critical comments directed to the report have focused on the recommendations and especially those, which either improve upon or reduce the impact of existing programs. The report does indeed offer gold to some and poverty to others. An economy is linked to society-state-culture system in a discussion of the political economy of culture.Reviews the book
