AbstractThis contribution presents and discusses selected methods and techniques applied in the area of tourist event assessment with a main focus on their economic effects evaluation. Besides the traditional evaluation models, such as the Input-output analysis or the CGE model, one newer and less common methodology – the local multiplier LM3 is introduced. This evaluation method has not been applied yet (in its full version) on any particular event, but it seems to have a potential to become more widespread, especially for evaluating events of local character and impact. This paper also observes the current research stages in terms of event tourism in the Czech Republic, where event industry increased its importance in the last decades. It offers an exhaustive listing of all the studies observing primarily event economic impacts in the Czech regions. The results of this study present a classification of the Czech events´ economic impact studies according to the applied methodology and also some recommendations for selection particular methodology according to a specific type of an event.

Assessing the revenue generation and other economic influences of a one-time megaevent raises unique measurement problems. This is especially true when the event is a 'cultural' tourist activity held in a place where many 'casual' tourists flock. This article describes this delineation process and presents the basis for encouragement of cultural tourist events.

This article aims to analyse the effects generated by regional events. The article identifies the social and economic effects of mass events, which are organized by public institutions. In determining the social and economic effects the methodology of New Public Management (NPM) concept was employed. This article presents the results of examination of the effects of special events organized in Poland in the Podlaskie region, where on a regional scale, tourism is a complementary segment of the economy, and, in the case of several local destinations, plays a dominant role both in employment and income of the population. Based on the evaluation of the Socio-cultural Impact, Existance Impact and the Direct expediture of regional events, it can be stated that these events have no direct bearing on the development of tourism in the region, in which they are organized. They contribute to raising the satisfaction connected with staying in the region, and slightly to the growth of the direct expenditure.

This article describes a study undertaken to estimate the economic impact on the state of Rhode Island of the Tall Ships '76 Celebration, a short-term tourist-attracting event. The research method involved identifying distinct segments of the participating population, which accounted for major sources of expenditures induced by the event. Six expenditure segments were identified: (1) Tall Ships '76 sponsor, (2) visiting public, (3) ships' personnel, (4) visiting ships, (5) crew-hosting families, and (6) miscellaneous groups. In addition to providing estimates of economic impact, the study generated a number of descriptive measures of the event which served to evaluate pre-event planning estimates. Demographic and other measures of visitors also enabled tourist profiles to be constructed, which were useful for planning future events and comparing to profiles derived from other events.

The transformation of intangible cultural heritage into a tourist event has become commonplace throughout the world, and few governments can afford to turn down the economic windfall brought about by mass tourism. The Quebec government is no exception. Since the incorporation of the notion of intangible cultural heritage in its Cultural Heritage Act, it has made the cultural and tourism industries not only an essential vector for its dissemination, but also a means of ensuring its continued existence. However, the rapid pace of consumption of cultural products, imposed by both the cultural and mass tourism industries, leads us to question the durability of certain forms of intangible cultural heritage, which can only be transmitted over time. Therefore, it seems appropriate to reflect on the integration of intangible cultural heritage in a combined perspective of events and mass tourism, important parts of the local economic development of Quebec.

The purpose of this study was to determine residents' perceived social costs and benefits toward an international tourist event, and their willingness to financially support the development of a permanent event facility. A telephone survey using a random sample (n = 600) of Albuquerque residents was conducted two weeks after the 1993 Kodak Albuquerque International Balloon Fiesta (AIBF). The 23rd Annual AIBF was the largest hot-air balloon event in the world, with over 900 pilots competing in various races and contests. The nine-day event attracted over 1.6 million spectators to a 70-acre site leased to organizers by city government. Few social costs were experienced by residents, while a majority of residents experienced multiple social benefits from the event. Although residents' attitudes toward the event were mostly positive, few residents were likely to finance a stadium development proposal through property tax increases. Before taxpayer approval for permanent event facility construction is sought, tourist event officials should assess residents' social benefits and costs, and their willingness to pay. Failure to do so may increase risk of bond referendum failure or bond default.

AbstractThe Stock Camp is a regular attraction at the National Folk Festival (NFF), a premier annual tourist event in Canberra, Australia. It relies heavily on the “authenticity” of its Australian food, bush entertainment, and “authentically Australian” volunteers for ongoing popularity. Using an auto-ethnographic approach (Saukko, 2002), this paper explores the extent to which new Stock Camp volunteers are prepared to accept the social positioning (Harré & van Langenhove, 1991, 1999) imposed on them by established Stock Camp volunteers. Findings from this study suggest that the social positioning of new Stock Camp volunteers imposes a strictly prescribed “authentic” Australian collective social identity, a gendered division of roles, and hierarchical power structures that make it difficult for new volunteers to accept the social positions imposed by established volun; teers. Inflexible positioning may be a barrier to further volunteering commitment. Auto-ethnography is shown to be a valuable research methodology, especially in socio-cultural leisure research as it enables the researcher to identify the processes through which better sense can be made of familiar and unfamiliar experiences within specific socio-cultural contexts.

AbstractThe national Folk Festival (NFF) is a premier annual tourist event in Canberra, Australia. The NFF management team of six paid and six volunteer workers relies on over 1400 volunteers to provide the services required at the NFF. Many of these are regular volunteers who combine volunteering at the NFF with a vacation. Using an interpretive research perspective and a process of narrative inquiry, this study explores the motivational factors of a group of solo female ‘grey nomads’ who are regular volunteers at the NFF and also members of the solo grey nomads group. Data was obtained from loosely structured in‐depth interviews, overt personal observation during two NFF festivals, and content analysis of the Solo Grey Nomads online forum. The data indicated that there are a number of key themes related to motivational factors among this group of volunteers that apply both to their membership of the solo grey nomads group and to volunteering at the NFF. These were the social benefits provided by the camaraderie and security in being part of a larger, supportive group; the self‐esteem provided by being a valued participant in activities of the group; ‘insider enjoyment'; and pride in achievement.

This article presents an analysis and forecast for the tourism industry in Montréal, Quebec as of 2004. Montréal's tourism industry is set to recover from a mediocre 2003. Domestic, U.S. and overseas travel to the city all dropped considerably. Fortunately there are some signs that the tourism industry in Montréal is turning around. Rising personal disposable income across Canada, and increasing domestic and international air capacity will all give travellers the means to support the travel recovery in Montréal. Business trips to Montréal will be supported by increased air capacity as well as additional convention space. The city is counting on the return of the Grand Prix of Canada in June to jump-start the travel recovery in 2004. Through support from the federal government, the race will go on this year in spite of the ban on tobacco advertising. Increased international air capacity along with Montréal's international reputation should help support the recovery. Both the pleasure and business forecasts in 2004 are supported by pent-up demand driven in part by the fact that AAA rated Montréal as North America's gourmet capital. The recovery in 2006 will be helped by what is being touted as the biggest tourist event to hit Montréal in years: Rendez-Vous Montréal 2006, a gay and lesbian athletic competition and cultural event. The ability to adapt to the changing travel environment will also help the city grow over the forecast. In line with this, Tourisme Montréal is adding special interest tours to its extensive range of tourism products.
