This paper proposes a smooth finite element method (S-FEM) for efficient and accurate analysis of motor magnetic fields. The edge-based smooth finite element (ES-FEM) formulations are derived for two-dimensional triangular element meshes suitable for multi-material motor structures, and then a magnetic flux density calculation method appropriate for S-FEM to calculate nonlinear electromagnetic fields is introduced. We present a novel discretization for the two-dimensional incompressible Magnetohydrodynamics (MHD) system coupling an electromagnetic model and a fluid flow model. Our approach follows the framework of the Virtual Element Method and offers two main advantages. The method can be implemented on unstructured meshes making it highly versatile and capable of handling a broad set of problems involving interfaces, free-boundaries, or adaptive refinements of the mesh. The second advantage concerns the divergence of the magnetic flux field and the fluid velocity. Our approach guarantees that the numerical approximation of the magnetic flux field and the fluid velocity are divergence free if their initial states are divergence free. Importantly, the divergence-free condition for the fluid velocity is satisfied in a pointwise sense. We include a theoretical proof of the condition on the magnetic flux field, energy estimates and a well-posedness study. Purpose: Calculating the stator end-winding leakage inductance, taking into account the rotor, is difficult due to the irregular shape of the end-winding. The end-winding leakage may distribute at the end of the active part and the fringing flux of the air gap. The fringing flux belongs to the main flux but goes into the end-winding region. Then, not all the magnetic flux occurring in the end region is the end-winding leakage flux. The purpose of this paper was to find a method to accurately separate the leakage from the total flux, taking into account the rotor. Design/methodology/approach: In this paper, two methods based on energy calculation are presented. Both methods require the assumption that the machine is symmetrical. The first method depends on the total leakage inductance and the machine's active region length. The second method is based on the energy stored in the end region of the machine. In this case, removing the energy produced by the fringing flux of the air gap is necessary. The model should have a volume-closing fringing flux to remove the part of energy belonging to the end of the air gap. Findings: The method presented in the paper does not require rotor removal. The values of the end-winding leakage inductance computed based on the proposed method were compared with values computed using the method with the removed rotor. The computations show that the proposed method is closest to the results from the method presented in the literature. Results obtained in the first method present that rotor influence on the value of end-winding leakage inductance exists. The model of the stator end-winding described in the paper is general. Therefore, the proposed methods are suitable for calculating the end-winding leakage inductance of other electric machines. Design/methodology/approach: Superconducting synchronous generators with a modular rotating cryostat for a single coil of the superconducting winding instead of an old-style single cryostat in which all rotor components are cold are briefly discussed. Subsequently, a new method of cryostat arrangement in the magnetic system of a rotor is considered. Different options were compared for the cryostat placement. The advantages of the novel rotor design model are noted. Findings: In the novel rotor design model, the leakage coefficient of the excitation winding decreases, and the air gap magnetic flux increases, which will save on a superconductor material. Research limitations/implications: For the purposes of this investigation, a finite element study of flux distribution in the cross section of a superconducting synchronous generator with a 10 MW rating at 10 rpm was conducted, and the magnetic fluxes and air gap flux densities were obtained for different modes. For direct-drive superconducting synchronous generators with distributed winding and different pole numbers, the calculations of magnetic fluxes were carried out by calculating the magnetic conductivities. Purpose: The purpose of this study is to search for an optimal core shape that is robust against misalignment between the transmitting and receiving coils of the wireless power transfer (WPT) device. During the optimization process, the authors maximize the coupling coefficients while minimizing the leakage flux around the coils to ensure the safety of the WPT device. Design/methodology/approach: In this study, a novel topology optimization method for WPT devices using the geometry projection method is proposed to optimize the magnetic core shape. This method facilitates the generation of bar-shaped magnetic cores because the material distribution is represented by a set of elementary bars. Findings: It is shown that an optimized core shape, which is obtained through topology optimization, effectively increases the net magnetic flux interlinked with the receiving coil and outperforms the conventional core. Purpose: The magnetic characterization of electrical steel is typically examined by measurements under the condition of unidirectional sinusoidal flux density at different magnetization frequencies. A variety of iron loss models were developed and parametrized for these standardized unidirectional iron loss measurements. In the magnetic cross section of rotating electrical machines, the spatial magnetic flux density loci and with them the resulting iron losses vary significantly from these unidirectional cases. For a better recreation of the measured behavior extended iron loss models that consider the effects of rotational magnetization have to be developed and compared to the measured material behavior. The aim of this study is the adaptation, parametrization and validation of an iron loss model considering the spatial flux density loci is presented and validated with measurements of circular and elliptical magnetizations. Design/methodology/approach: The proposed iron loss model allows the calculation and separation of the different iron loss components based on the measured iron loss for different spatial magnetization loci. The separation is performed in analogy to the conventional iron loss calculation approach designed for the recreation of the iron losses measured under unidirectional, one-dimensional measurements. The phenomenological behavior for rotating magnetization loci is considered by the formulation of the different iron loss components as a function of the maximum magnetic flux density Bm, axis ratio fAx, angle to the rolling direction (RD) θ and magnetization frequency f. Findings: The proposed formulation for the calculation of rotating iron loss is able to recreate the complicated interdependencies between the different iron loss components and the respective spatial magnetic flux loci. The model can be easily implemented in the finite element analysis of rotating electrical machines, leading to good agreement between the theoretically expected behavior and the actual output of the iron loss calculation at different geometric locations in the magnetic cross section of rotating electrical machines. Originality/value: Based on conventional one-dimensional iron loss separation approaches and previously performed extensions for rotational magnetization, the terms for the consideration of vectorial unidirectional, elliptical and circular flux density loci are adjusted and compared to the performed rotational measurement. The presented approach for the mathematical formulation of the iron loss model also allows the parametrization of the different iron loss components by unidirectional measurements performed in different directions to the RD on conventional one-dimensional measurement topologies such as the Epstein frames and single sheet testers. Purpose: Despite its well-founded criticism and lack of proper justification under core saturation conditions, the T-equivalent transformer model (Steinmetz scheme) is obviously championing in the literature. This educational paper aims to explain in a simple manner the limitations of the T-model of a low-frequency transformer and critically analyses some attempts to improve it. Design/methodology/approach: Using a simplified examination of magnetic fluxes in the core and windings and using the modeling in ATPDraw, it is shown that transient transformer models with the indivisible leakage inductance allow circumventing the drawbacks of the T-model. Findings: The authors show the absence of valid grounds for subdividing the leakage inductance of a transformer between its primary and secondary windings. The connection between the use of individual leakage inductances and inaccurate prediction of inrush current peaks is outlined as an important example. Purpose: This paper aims to propose and establish a set of new benchmark models to investigate and confidently validate the modeling and prediction of total stray-field loss inside magnetic and non-magnetic components under harmonics-direct current (HDC) hybrid excitations. As a new member-set (P21e) of the testing electromagnetic analysis methods Problem 21 Family, the focus is on efficient analysis methods and accurate material property modeling under complex excitations. Design/methodology/approach: This P21e-based benchmarking covers the design of new benchmark models with magnetic flux compensation, the establishment of a new benchmark measurement system with HDC hybrid excitation, the formulation of the testing program (such as defined Cases I–V) and the measurement and prediction of material properties under HDC hybrid excitations, to test electromagnetic analysis methods and finite element (FE) computation models and investigate the electromagnetic behavior of typical magnetic and electromagnetic shields in electrical equipment. Findings: The updated Problem 21 Family (V.2021) can now be used to investigate and validate the total power loss and the different shielding performance of magnetic and electromagnetic shields under various HDC hybrid excitations, including the different spatial distributions of the same excitation parameters. The new member-set (P21e) with magnetic flux compensation can experimentally determine the total power loss inside the load-component, which helps to validate the numerical modeling and simulation with confidence. The additional iron loss inside the laminated sheets caused by the magnetic flux normal to the laminations must be correctly modeled and predicted during the design and analysis. It is also observed that the magnetic properties (B27R090) measured in the rolling and transverse directions with different direct current (DC) biasing magnetic field are quite different from each other. Research limitations/implications: The future benchmarking target is to study the effects of stronger HDC hybrid excitations on the internal loss behavior and the microstructure of magnetic load components. Originality/value: This paper proposes a new extension of Problem 21 Family (1993–2021) with the upgraded excitation, involving multi-harmonics and DC bias. The alternating current (AC) and DC excitation can be applied at the two sides of the model's load-component to avoid the adverse impact on the AC and DC power supply and investigate the effect of different AC and DC hybrid patterns on the total loss inside the load-component. The overall effectiveness of numerical modeling and simulation is highlighted and achieved via combining the efficient electromagnetic analysis methods and solvers, the reliable material property modeling and prediction under complex excitations and the precise FE computation model using partition processing.
