2. A guiding framework for promoting public-private partnerships in research and innovation: Evidence from a developing country context

Abstract: Public-private partnerships have long existed in literature, primarily in the construction sector. However, there is a paucity of research on the research and innovation ecosystem. This research aims to develop a framework for promoting public-private partnerships in research and innovation to foster public-private linkages. Primary data was collected from 192 participants selected from public and private sector organizations. The relative importance index was used to rank key elements for promoting public-private partnerships in research and innovations. The best practices include sharing knowledge, engaging in win-win partnerships, and establishing innovation hubs and intellectual property policies. Effective elements include leveraging innovation in geographical proximity, a supportive regulatory framework, joint financing of research equipment and tax incentives for research equipment. Priority sectors include renewable energy, smart agriculture and education. Websites and direct engagements are essential platforms for engaging in collaborations. The research recommends that the government should provide seed funding to support the early phases of the research and extend tax exemptions for research equipment and infrastructure. Research institutions should establish innovation hubs and operationalize intellectual property policies. The study proposes a framework for promoting public-private partnerships in research and innovation in a developing country like Zambia.

3. Neurocysticercosis Prevalence and Characteristics in Communities of Sinda District in Zambia: A Cross-Sectional Study

Abstract: Background: This study aimed at describing the epidemiology of (neuro)cysticercosis as well as its clinical and radiological characteristics in a Taenia soliumendemic district of Zambia. Methods: This was part of a cross-sectional community-based study conducted in Sinda district to evaluate an antibody-detecting T. soliumpoint-of-care (TS POC) test for taeniosis and (neuro)cysticercosis. All TS POC cysticercosis positive (CC+) participants and a subset of the TS POC cysticercosis negative (CC-) received a clinical evaluation and cerebral computed tomography (CT) examination for neurocysticercosis (NCC) diagnosis and staging. Results: Of the 1249 participants with a valid TS POC test result, 177 (14%) were TS POC CC+ . Cysticercosis sero-prevalence was estimated to be 20.1% (95% confidence intervals [CI] 14.6–27.0%). In total, 233 participants received a CT examination (151 TS POC CC+ , 82 TS POC CC-). Typical NCC lesions were present in 35/151 (23%) TS POC CC+ , and in 10/82 (12%) TS POC CC- participants. NCC prevalence was 13.5% (95% CI 8.4–21.1%) in the study population and 38.0% (95% CI 5.2–87.4%) among people reporting epileptic seizures. Participants with NCC were more likely to experience epileptic seizures (OR = 3.98, 95% CI 1.34–11.78, p= 0.01) than those without NCC, although only 7/45 (16%) people with NCC ever experienced epileptic seizures. The number of lesions did not differ by TS POC CC status (median: 3 [IQR 1–6] versus 2.5 [IQR 1–5.3], p= 0.64). Eight (23%) of the 35 TS POC CC+ participants with NCC had active stage lesions; in contrast none of the TS POC CC- participants was diagnosed with active NCC. Conclusion: NCC is common in communities in the Eastern province of Zambia, but a large proportion of people remain asymptomatic.

Abstract: We provide here the first bottom‐up review of the lived experience of mental disorders in adolescents co‐designed, co‐conducted and co‐written by experts by experience and academics. We screened first‐person accounts within and outside the medical field, and discussed them in collaborative workshops involving numerous experts by experience – representing different genders, ethnic and cultural backgrounds, and continents – and their family members and carers. Subsequently, the material was enriched by phenomenologically informed perspectives and shared with all collaborators. The inner subjective experience of adolescents is described for mood disorders, psychotic disorders, attention‐deficit/hyperactivity disorder, autism spectrum disorders, anxiety disorders, eating disorders, externalizing disorders, and self‐harm behaviors. The recollection of individuals’ past histories also indexes the prodromal (often transdiagnostic) features predating the psychiatric diagnosis. The experience of adolescents with mental disorders in the wider society is described with respect to their family, their school and peers, and the social and cultural context. Furthermore, their lived experience of mental health care is described with respect to receiving a diagnosis of mental disorder, accessing mental health support, receiving psychopharmacological treatment, receiving psychotherapy, experiencing peer support and mental health activism, and achieving recovery. These findings can impact clinical practice, research, and the whole society. We hope that this co‐designed, co‐conducted and co‐written journey can help us maintain our commitment to protecting adolescents’ fragile mental health, and can help them develop into a healthy, fulfilling and contributing adult life.

5. Southampton Adaptation Framework to Culturally Adapt Cognitive Behavior Therapy

Abstract: Cultural values, traditions, and norms influence the practice of psychotherapy. It is now widely accepted that modern evidence-based therapies such as CBT need to be culturally adapted for them to be successfully applied to clients from a non-Western background. There are multiple factors to support cultural adaptations, such as evidence from research and an increase in cultural awareness and globalization. A number of meta-analyses supporting culturally adapted interventions have been published across the globe. A review of these meta-analyses reported that culturally adapted interventions have moderate to high effect sizes in favor of culturally adapted psychological interventions. We provide a brief background on cultural differences and suggest ways to address these differences. We also discuss the current state of science in this area. We also provide a brief description of factors that are generally accepted as important components of culturally adapted interventions. We discuss the Southampton Adaptation Framework widely used to Culturally adapt CBT (SAF-CaCBT). This framework has been used in South Asia, the Middle East, China, England, Africa, and Canada. More than 20 studies have used the framework to adapt CBT culturally. The framework has evolved based on lessons learned from research and consists of 3 major areas of concern: awareness of culture and religion, assessment and engagement, and adjustments in therapy. Each area has 8 subareas to consider when culturally adapting CBT. Finally, we discuss the limitations and barriers in this area and recommendations for future work. There is a need to develop universal guidelines on cultural adaptation as well as areas of adaptation, more research with better methodology and the use of active comparators in the assessment of culturally adapted interventions. There is also a need to further strengthen the evidence base by robust meta analyses.

6. “The spirit is willing, but the content is weak?” Enacting the mother tongue policy in teaching information and communication technology to preschoolers in Zimbabwe

Abstract: AbstractThis mini-ethnographic case study examined the enactment of the mother tongue (MT) medium of instruction policy in teaching information and communication technology (ICT) to preschoolers or early childhood development (ECD) learners in a Zimbabwean school. The study employed an eclectic cognitive sense-making, ethnography of language policy and planning (ELPP), and technological, pedagogical, and content knowledge (TPACK) framework to look into practices of one preschool teacher, Mrs K, in her quest to enact the mother tongue policy. Despite her 26 years of experience in teaching preschoolers, Mrs K had not received adequate training on teaching ICT, a new subject in the ECD curriculum. While at first glance, she appeared to be abiding by the policy, some of her lessons proved to be teacher-dominated, and the classroom dialogue formulaic thus undermining the all-pervading learner-centred pedagogy on which the new curriculum edifice was premised. The paper thus explores the complex interplay of knowledge of content, technology and pedagogy; experience; cognitive and other contextual factors in impacting teacher sense-making and enactment of the mother tongue policy in teaching ICT to pre-school learners. One major factor which appeared to be influencing teacher understanding of policy was lack of ICT content knowledge and knowledge of how to teach ICT using both English and MT. The policy reformers seemingly rushed to implement the curriculum without capacitating teachers on how to use the mother tongue to teach ICT at ECD level. The study thus proposes strategies for teacher professional development in ICT, particularly for resource-constrained environments.

7. Analysis of factors influencing market participation among orange‐fleshed sweet potato smallholder farmers in southern region of Malawi: A case of RTC project

Abstract: Agricultural markets remain major issue downgrading root and tuber crop farmers who form the mainstream of the agricultural producers in Malawi. Recent evidence however reveals that orange‐fleshed sweet potato (OFSP) (Ipomea batatas) is currently being sold in produce markets along with the non‐orange varieties, sometimes in differentiated form in Malawi. The main objective of this study was to examine factors affecting market participation of sweet potato farmers in southern region of Malawi. Using a double‐hurdle model, this paper analyzed both the factors affecting farmer decision to participate and the extent/intensity of participation in market. The first tier of the double hurdle focused on decision to participate in the market using probit model and the second tier addressed factors affecting intensity of participation using truncated normal regression model. The paper used data collected from 360 farmers in southern districts of Malawi. Out of 360, 146 farmers had grown OFSP in the season preceding the survey. Double hurdle results indicate that farm size, output, age of a farmer (household head), and early maturing trait significantly determined decision to participate in the market. Further, results on intensity of participation indicate that access to market training, farm size, asset value, and output positively determined the intensity and negatively determined by distance to main market and gender of a farmer (household head). Based on the research findings, higher output levels and early maturing trait were found to increase smallholder farmer market participation. It is therefore recommended that strategies aimed at increasing household capacity to produce surplus produce through market tailored extension messages and productivity enhancement technologies could be highly effective in fostering smallholders' participation in commercial markets. Again, enhanced capacity building of research institutions to breed sweet potato varieties based on market demand is pivotal for increased market participation. Furthermore, research suggests that improving smallholder farmers' access to market price information, asset value, and farm size can help increase their intensity in the market. Therefore, it is critical for policymakers to holistically comprehend these socioeconomic factors in order to address the issue of smallholder farm households' decisions about market participation and the degree to which they participate. Orange fleshed sweet potato is currently being sold along with non‐orange varieties, sometimes in differentiated.Decision to participate in market is significantly influenced by output, farm size, age early maturing attribute.Market intensity is determined by access to training, distance to market, farm size, gender, asset value and output.Breeding programs should integrate both sensory and agronomic traits such as early maturity and good taste.

8. Examining the income gap-gender inequality nexus in Africa using bi-wavelet and partial wavelet coherence analysis

Abstract: The eradication of gender discrimination traditions and the reduction of income disparities are vital global objectives outlined in Sustainable Development Goals 4 and 10, particularly in African nations where gender and income gaps persist. In alignment with these goals, this study employs wavelet techniques to investigate the relationship between income inequality and gender equality in 31 selected African countries, utilizing available data spanning from 1998 to 2020. Analysis of the co-movement between gender equality and income gap reveals that gender equality plays a crucial role in narrowing the income disparity in African countries. Expanding the analysis to control for the impact of economic growth through the implementation of partial wavelet tools, does not change these results. Further dissemination of our findings reveals that improved gender equality has a more pronounced impact on reducing income inequality in anglophone nations compared to their francophone counterparts, given variations in legal frameworks and religious practices. This emphasizes the importance of gender-sensitive policies in effectively addressing income inequality in Africa and suggests that policymakers should tailor country-specific policies to account for differences in gender laws, cultures, and religious beliefs. Overall, our study presents novel evidence linking income and gender inequality in Africa at country level.

11. Plasma Surface Treatment of Cu Current Collectors for Improving the Electrochemical Performance of Si Anodes

Abstract: The practical utilization of Si electrodes is hindered by their substantial volume expansion during alloying and dealloying processes, which causes mechanical damage and separation from Cu current collectors. To alleviate the problem of Si composite detachment from Cu current collectors, the surface of the Cu current collectors is modified using atmospheric oxygen plasma. Plasma treatment improves the wetting ability of the Cu current collectors and, consequently, the coating quality of the Si electrodes. The uniform distribution of the Si electrode components reduces the sheet resistance and improves the adhesion properties of the Si electrodes containing surface-modified Cu current collectors. As a result, the volume expansion of Si during alloying and dealloying is reduced; this results in an excellent rate capability of 1584 mA h g–1at a current density of 3.6 A g–1(135% that of bare Cu) and excellent cycle performance of 1545 mA h g–1after 300 cycles (Si electrodes with bare Cu exhibit 930 mA h g–1). Therefore, the developed plasma treatment method for Cu current collectors is expected to be an economical and efficient approach for improving the Li–ion battery performance.

12. Characterising Productivity Factors Affecting Maize (Zea mays) Production in a Smallholder Crop-Livestock System

Abstract: Socio-economic factors can influence decisions and the intensity of management practices, which when appropriately considered could bridge yield gaps. The study aimed to investigate factors affecting maize (Zea maysL.) production in a smallholder crop-livestock system. Social and management analyses were performed to ascertain the factors influencing maize productivity using interviews and questionnaires. The study was conducted in two main maize-producing regions of Eswatini, the Highveld at Mankayane and Middleveld at Luve. Additionally, on-farm trials were established for two cropping seasons to evaluate maize response to three fertiliser regimes: cattle manure only, cattle manure plus inorganic fertiliser, and inorganic fertiliser only and lastly to determine the most economic fertiliser regime. Each fertiliser regime was replicated six times. Weed biomass and maize yield were collected from a 5 m × 1 m quadrat. Moreover, economic analysis for each fertiliser regime was performed using partial budgets comprising fertiliser and weed management costs. The social and management analyses showed that maize yield was strongly associated with household size (p< 0.05), land area cultivated (p< 0.05) and herbicide application timing (p< 0.05) indicating the effect of these factors on yield. On-farm trials revealed that the inorganic fertiliser only regime resulted in a significantly (p< 0.05) higher maize yield compared to manure only and manure plus inorganic fertiliser regimes in both study areas. Weed biomass was significantly (p< 0.05) lower in the inorganic fertiliser only regime at Mankayane compared to the manure only and manure plus inorganic fertiliser at both localities. The economic analysis showed that the manure only fertiliser regime had low costs that vary and high net benefits indicating that manure has the potential to improve soil conditions, reduce environmental impacts, and increase profits.

13. Groundwater recharge in basement aquifers in subhumid drylands of sub-Saharan Africa

Abstract: Characterising groundwater recharge is fundamental for sustainable groundwater management. This study focuses on assessing recharge in drylands using four experimental plots under different land-use practices in crystalline basement aquifers in three southern African countries (Chitedze in Malawi, Kabeleka and Liempe in Zambia, and Domboshawa in Zimbabwe). Several methods, including water-table fluctuation (WTF), chloride mass balance (CMB), water stable isotopes (δ18O and δ2H) and dissolved gases, were used to quantify annual recharge rates, recharge sources and groundwater residence times. This informed the development of a conceptual model of groundwater recharge in unpumped basement aquifers. Using WTF, across all sites/years, the range of annual median recharge was found to be in the range of 2.8–14.1% rainfall. Recharge was observed for most years across all sites and was controlled by hydrogeological settings, rainfall totals and antecedent conditions, i.e. the groundwater level at the end of the preceding dry season. Based on groundwater level observations and water stable isotope analysis, for sites where there has been extensive use of conservation agriculture (in time and space), there is some evidence of earlier and greater recharge compared to conventional agriculture at paired sites. Additionally, there is evidence of high lateral connectivity in shallow, permeable layers and high local connectivity in the aquifers which facilitate discharge to surface drainage. This leads to a lower proportion of modern recharge at these unpumped sites (typically <10%) compared to other studies using comparable methods in pumped boreholes, which highlights the importance of groundwater capture due to pumping.

14. Governance, institutional quality and economic complexity in selected African countries

Abstract: New economic thinking speculates that the diversification and sophistication of economic capabilities/structures is key in explaining why African countries lag in development behind the rest of the world. We question the extent to which non-traditional growth factors such as governance and institutional quality are related to economic complexity for 35 African countries. We estimate panel GMM regressions using 8 different measures of governance/institutional quality for both linear and kinked regressions using annual data collected between 1996 and 2021. The baseline estimates reveal a positive linear relationship between most measures of governance and institutional quality and economic complexity. Our sensitivity analysis further show that institutions/governance have stronger relationship with economic complexity in the post-global financial crisis era. Moreover, nonlinear or kinked relationships emerge once the data is segregated into different income and resource abundant groups. Altogether, our findings of a nonlinear relationship between institutions/governance and economic complexity are novel to the literature and offer unique insights on how African policymakers can use governance/institutions for improving the complexity of production processes.

15. Leveraging the potential of wild food for healthy, sustainable, and equitable local food systems: learning from a transformation lab in the Western Cape region

Abstract: Food insecurity and diet-related diseases do not only have detrimental effects to human health, but are also underpinned by food systems that are environmentally unsustainable and culturally disconnected. Ensuring access to a healthy, affordable, and sustainable diet is one of the greatest challenges facing many low- and middle-income countries such as South Africa. These challenges in accessing a diverse diet often persist despite biocultural richness. For example, South Africa is globally recognised for its rich biodiversity, an ecologically unrivalled coastline, and a rich body of traditional knowledge amongst wild-food users. In this paper, we explore the potential that coastal wild foods as neglected and underutilised species (NUS) can play in local food systems in South Africa’s Western Cape Province. Following a previously established transformation lab (T-Lab) method, here we report the observations and outcomes emerging from a two-day workshop held in May 2019 with a group of 40 actors involved in the local food system in diverse ways. Farmers, small-scale fishers, indigenous knowledge holders, representatives from non-profit organisations, chefs, bartenders, academics, activists, conservationists, and government officials were brought together with the aim of strengthening an emerging coalition of coastal wild food actors. Findings highlighted the existence of a fledgling economy for coastal wild foods, driven by high-end chefs. The T-Lab was essentially a tool of knowledge co-production around food system transformation and helped to surface deeply embedded issues on land, race, history, and culture that warrant engagement if a better food system is to emerge. In a country that is drought prone and vulnerable to climate change, a more resilient and sustainable food system is a necessity. But defining alternative governance systems to shift towards a healthier, more sustainable, and more equitable food system will require concerted effort across all stakeholders.

Abstract: Newcastle disease (ND) is among the most important poultry diseases worldwide. It is the major threat to poultry production in Africa and causes major economic losses for both local and commercial chickens. To date, half of ND class II genotypes have been reported in Africa (I, IV, V, VI, VII, XI, XIII, XIV, XVII, XVIII, and XXI). The information on the circulating NDV genotypes is still scarce despite the endemic nature of ND in most countries on the African continent.A total of 659 oro-cloacal swabs were collected from local chickens in Mawenzi live bird market located in Morogoro, Tanzania, between June 2020 and May 2021. Newcastle disease virus was detected by using reverse transcription real-time polymerase chain reaction (RT-qPCR) and conventional PCR followed by sequencing of PCR products. The prevalence of NDV in the surveilled live bird markets was 23.5%. Sequencing and phylogenetic analysis revealed the presence of sub-genotype VII.2. The detected sub-genotype VII.2 has phylogenetic links to Zambian NDV strains implying a Southeast dissemination of the virus, considering that it was first detected in Mozambique. This study underscores the need of active NDV surveillance to determine the distribution of this NDV genotype in the country and monitor its spread and contribution to the emergence of new ND viruses.

Abstract: From early in the COVID-19 pandemic, evidence suggested a role for cytokine dysregulation and complement activation in severe disease. In the TACTIC-R trial, we evaluated the efficacy and safety of baricitinib, an inhibitor of Janus kinase 1 (JAK1) and JAK2, and ravulizumab, a monoclonal inhibitor of complement C5 activation, as an adjunct to standard of care for the treatment of adult patients hospitalised with COVID-19.

Abstract: AbstractThe present article analyzes the meaning and form of onomatopoeias in Tjwao, a Khoe-Kwadi (Kalahari Khoe) language. Making use of a prototype approach to categorization, a corpus of 113 onomatopoeic lexemes were tested for their compliance with the semantic, phonetic, and morphological features associated with the prototype of onomatopoeias in scholarly literature. The evidence demonstrates that Tjwao onomatopoeias tend to instantiate the prototype fully. This signifies, in turn, that, as far as their phonetics and morphology are concerned, Tjwao onomatopoeias tend to be extra-systematic.

Abstract: To develop efficient solid-state photosynthetic cell factories for sustainable chemical production, we present an interdisciplinary experimental toolbox to investigate and interlink the structure, operative stability, and gas transfer properties of alginate- and nanocellulose-based hydrogel matrices with entrapped wild-type SynechocystisPCC 6803 cyanobacteria. We created a rheological map based on the mechanical performance of the hydrogel matrices. The results highlighted the importance of Ca2+-cross-linking and showed that nanocellulose matrices possess higher yield properties, and alginate matrices possess higher rest properties. We observed higher porosity for nanocellulose-based matrices in a water-swollen state via calorimetric thermoporosimetry and scanning electron microscopy imaging. Finally, by pioneering a gas flux analysis via membrane-inlet mass spectrometry for entrapped cells, we observed that the porosity and rigidity of the matrices are connected to their gas exchange rates over time. Overall, these findings link the dynamic properties of the life-sustaining matrix to the performance of the immobilized cells in tailored solid-state photosynthetic cell factories.

24. Dynamics of return and volatility spill-over between developed, emerging and African equity markets during the Covid-19 pandemic and Russia–Ukraine war

Abstract: AbstractWe contribute to the growing literature examining spill-over effects between international equity markets in the “new normal” disposition and extend upon previous studies to include more recent periods covering the Russia–Ukraine war. Using the Diebold and Yilmaz network method, we estimate the returns and volatility connectedness between developed, emerging and African markets over the period 11 March 2020 to 30 June 2022. Our findings can be summarised in three points. Firstly, the static connectedness analysis informs us that emerging and African (developed) markets are the main net receivers (transmitters) of systemic shocks over the sample period. Secondly, the time-varying connectedness analysis further informs us that network connectedness is higher during the Russia–Ukraine war compared to the announcement of Covid-19 variants. Thirdly, the time-varying market specific analysis distinguishes which individual equities are most or least vulnerable to systemic shocks during the Covid-19 pandemic and Russia–Ukraine war. These findings are relevant for investors in their search for better hedging opportunities in equity markets. Moreover, market regulators should take heed of our findings as the observed build-up of systemic risk following the Russia–Ukraine conflict is an indicative of contagion effects experienced.

25. A four-decade profile of apicultural demographics and production in New Zealand, 1980–2020

Abstract: The demand for honey and pollination services has continued to grow in many countries worldwide, including New Zealand. This has influenced changes in the demographics of the managed population of honey bees (Apis mellifera). We examined historical data to describe how the apicultural demographics in New Zealand have changed temporally and geographically in the four decades to 2020. We also describe trends in honey production and the economic value of pure honey exported from New Zealand between 2000 and 2020. Our findings suggest that commercial apiculture has been key to the intensification of beekeeping in New Zealand during the study period. This is supported by evidence showing pronounced expansion of beekeeping operations among those with more than 1,000 colonies. The intensification has resulted in the density of apiaries increasing threefold across New Zealand during the four decades. While higher numbers of colonies per area produced higher volumes of honey, there was no corresponding improvement in production efficiency. Honey yields per apiary or colony, as indicators of production efficiency, appear to decline from the mid-2000s. The volume of pure honey export increased over 40-fold, a magnitude approximately ten times higher than that of production increase. This reflects a substantial increase in returns from honey exports, mostly driven by the price of mānuka honey. Our findings add to a pool of information to support evidence-based decision making to enhance honey bee health and develop the apicultural industry in New Zealand.

Abstract: Background: Nicotine replacement therapy (NRT) and short messaging service (SMS)-based tobacco cessation interventions have demonstrated effectiveness in reducing tobacco use in many populations, but evidence is needed on which tailored treatments are most efficacious in meeting the complex medical and psychosocial factors confronting people living with HIV (PLWH) in sub-Saharan Africa (SSA). This paper describes the protocol of a study to test the efficacy of both NRT and a tailored SMS-based tobacco use cessation intervention among PLWH in Uganda and Zambia. Methods: In a randomized controlled trial, 800 adult PLWH who use tobacco will be recruited by health care professionals at HIV treatment centers where they are receiving care. Participants will be randomized to one of the four study arms: (1) standard of care [SOC; brief clinician advice to quit combined with HIV education and information aimed at encouraging HIV treatment adherence (with no mention of tobacco) delivered via text messages]; (2) SOC + 12 weeks of NRT; (3) SOC + 6 weeks of SMS text messages to support quitting tobacco use (SMS); or (4) SOC + NRT + SMS. Participants will receive a cell phone and solar panel with power bank for charging the phone. The main outcome is cessation of tobacco use by study participants verified by urinary cotinine (< 15 ng/mL) at 6 months post-enrollment. As a secondary tobacco use outcome, we will measure 7-day point-prevalence abstinence (7 consecutive days of no tobacco use) measured by self-report and biochemically-verified at 4 weeks, 8 weeks, and 3 months post enrollment. Discussion: Our study will provide insight into the efficacy, feasibility and applicability of delivering tobacco cessation interventions through health care professionals combined with tailored tobacco cessation SMS text messaging in two countries with different tobacco use patterns, policy environments, and health care resources and provide needed information to providers and policymakers looking for cost-effective tobacco cessation interventions. The previously tested SMS-platform to be used in our study is uniquely positioned to be scaled in low- and middle-income countries worldwide, in which case evidence of even modest success in reducing the prevalence of tobacco consumption among PLWH could confer enormous health and economic benefits.

Abstract: Central Banks in major industrialized economies have struggled to keep inflation within their target ranges since the global financial crisis. The periods of missing inflation and deflation experienced in the post-crisis era have led to doubts about the traditional Fisher effect as a crucial component of the policy reaction function. We explore the NeoFisherian theory, which suggests an alternative causal relationship between the policy rate and inflation. We focus on the USA, UK, and EU and apply wavelet coherence analysis to examine the time–frequency lead–lag comovements on data spanning from January 2007 to March 2023. Our findings indicate increasing NeoFisherian dynamics, notably post-2013 taper tantrum, implying that Central Banks in industrialized economies have misunderstood monetary policy dynamics.

Abstract: AbstractIncreasing drought patterns with profound effects on livelihoods and food security have been documented in Ethiopia. From previous studies', assessments at various timescales, Ethiopia is regarded as a drought-prone country in East Africa. However, there is no documentation available. This paper investigates the spatiotemporal patterns of drought characteristics in 16 woredas (districts) as well as in the 14 homogeneous rainfall zones of homogeneous using monthly rainfall and temperature data over the period 1983 to 2020. The Standardized Precipitation Index (SPI) and Standardized Precipitation Evapotranspiration Index (SPEI) were computed using time-series meteorological data to depict the spatial extent of drought characteristics and patterns at 4- and 12-month timescales. Within the period investigated, 12-month, 2015, and 2019 recorded the most extreme countrywide drought. The most prolonged drought duration lasted for 12 months in 2015. Although Ethiopia is a drought-prone country, the frequency, magnitude, and severity vary spatially by region. In planning for future actions, particular emphasis must be paid to the northeastern, eastern, northwestern, and southeastern parts of the country, which are more vulnerable. The findings could potentially influence and redirect national drought management and disaster preparedness programs for the affected areas.

Abstract: AbstractIn sub-Saharan Africa, protected areas provide a platform for conserving biodiversity. However, these areas are facing massive pressure due to deforestation, and information on forest dynamics and factors driving the changes in protected areas is generally lacking. This study has two objectives: (1) to assess forest cover changes that have occurred between 1972 and 2016 in Copperbelt Province’s protected areas, and (2) understand the drivers of forest cover changes. The study used thematic land cover maps for six selected years, which were classified using an object-based image analysis (OBIA) approach. We also applied a Classification Tree (CT) approach to assess the drivers of forest cover changes using R statistical software. The findings showed that forest cover in protected areas has been characterised by massive deforestation due to various factors. Between 1972 and 2016, primary and secondary forests showed a decrease of 2,226.43 km2(11.06%) and an increase of 1,082.93 km2(4.05%), respectively. The major factors driving forest changes include the levels of precipitation, human population density, elevation, distance from roads, towns and rivers. This study presents consistent information for long-term forest monitoring in protected areas, and informs decision-makers on the levels of deforestation and their drivers for effective forest management.

Abstract: AbstractThis study uses remote sensing and GIS techniques to examine the intensity and dynamics of land use/cover change and environmental indices across a four-decade period in the Chingola district of Zambia, from 1972 to 2020 using five classification stages (1972, 1992, 2001, 2013, and 2020). A total of 10 key climate change detection monitoring indices were generated using RClimDex to examine the implications of land degradation on the bioclimatic factors from 1983 to 2020. The findings revealed a significant expansion in Built-ups (7.3%/year), farmlands (3.18%/year), and mining areas (0.82%/year) at the expense of natural resources. The highest human pressure was exerted on Savannah woodlands (−0.78), through agriculture (0.76) and infrastructure development (0.44) between 1992 and 2001.The analysis of the bioclimatic indices revealed a significant decline in rainfall quantity and intensity, and a rising in temperature (warmer days and nights). The Annual rainfall has decreased by −3.25%, while the potential evapotranspiration has increased by 0.04% from 1983 to 2020, resulting in an Aridity Index of 0.60 and a moisture deficit index of −0.42. To offset agriculture’s propensity to spatially expand and further encroach into savannah woodlands and forests, urban containment policies and programs that stimulate agricultural intensification are needed to reduce urban sprawl and protect the city’s remaining forestlands.

36. Understanding the impact of sustainable land-scape management practices on farm productivity under intensifying tropical cyclones: Evidence from Southern Malawi

Abstract: Southern Malawi is continuously affected by tropical cyclone-related floods (TCRFs), which have negative consequences on households' livelihoods, thereby displacing most households to neighbouring communities of Mozambique. The TCRFs have further threatened national, regional, community, and household food security agenda, which is already constrained by poverty, poor agricultural practices, low use of improved varieties, unaffordable inorganic fertilizers, and fragmenting landholding sizes. Accordingly, households have indigenously engineered resilience-based Sustainable Landscape Management (SLM) practices, like intercropping, agroforestry, cover cropping, and soil and water conservation practices, against the adverse effects of TCRFs on-farm productivity. Hence, this study examines the effect of TCRFs and SLM adoption on-farm productivity. While using rigorous endogenous switching regression econometric tools, the study finds TCRFs reducing farm productivity by 27 percent. After SLM adoption, the study observes farm productivity enhancement by 29–126 percent when households adopt at least one SLM practices under varying degrees of TCRFs. Despite the highlighted advantages of SLM adoption, female farmers are less likely to adopt SLM practices because they do not have access to productive resources. Hence, the study proposes the need of gender targeted extension services, accompanied by some seed capital for SLM adoption. Besides, there is need to sensitize farmers on the complementarities between inorganic fertilizer and SLM practices. Lastly, future studies should assess the effect of sustained SLM adoption or dis-adoption and input intensification on farm productivity.

Abstract: The interaction between COVID-19, non-communicable diseases, and chronic infectious diseases such as HIV and tuberculosis is unclear, particularly in low-income and middle-income countries in Africa. South Africa has a national HIV prevalence of 19% among people aged 15–49 years and a tuberculosis prevalence of 0·7% in people of all ages. Using a nationally representative hospital surveillance system in South Africa, we aimed to investigate the factors associated with in-hospital mortality among patients with COVID-19.

41. Is newer better? Evaluating the suitability of nighttime luminosity in proxying poverty in Africa

Abstract: Purpose: The purpose of the study is to evaluate whether nighttime luminosity sourced from the Defense Meteorological Satellite Program-Operational Linescan System satellite sensors is a suitable proxy for measuring poverty in Africa. Design/methodology/approach: Our study performs wavelet coherence analysis to investigate the time-frequency synchronization between the nightlight data and “income-to-wealth” ratio for 39 African countries between 1992 and 2012. Findings: All-in-all, the authors find that approximately a third of African countries produce positive synchronizations between nighttime data and “income-to-wealth” ratio and hence conclude that most African countries are not at liberty to use nighttime data to proxy conventional poverty statistics. Originality/value: In differing from previous studies, the authors examine the suitability of nightlight intensity as a proxy of poverty for individual African countries using much more rigorous analysis.

42. A legal analysis of disjunctions between statutory and customary land tenure regimes in Zambia

Abstract: AbstractIn the recent past, Zambia has experienced land governance related issues such as voluntary and involuntary displacements, insecurity of tenure, food insecurity and land disputes. While laudable efforts have been made to uphold and realise land and resource rights of poor rural populations in Zambia, there are several longstanding challenges that remain unresolved. The majority of the rural population still do not enjoy sufficient legal protection of their land rights. This paper shows the inadequate legal recognition of the strength of rights to land and natural resources derived from custom and how to recognise and secure land rights of dwellers in law and practice. The paper also examines the degree to which vested property rights are protected from infringements and analyses land rights in the context of ownership, possession and holder-ship. The relationship between statutory and customary land tenure systems are assessed from the perspective of legal pluralism. Therefore, this paper provides insights into the diversity of land tenure regimes that exist, as well as what constitutes the legal status of land and ways in which they provide for vestment of property rights.

In malaria-endemic areas, surviving children also remain at increased risk of mortality for several months after hospital discharge. Explorative Insights on Liminal Gender States within Women’s STEMpreneurship.” International Entrepreneurship and Management Journal16: 115–136. doi:10.1007/s11365-019-00605-5), we conducted narrative research to gain rare insights into the gendered challenges faced by female fund managers in private equity in Sub-Saharan Africa during the fundraising process. We discover a triple dissonance between the feminine normative frames of womanhood and the male normative frames of entrepreneurship and private equity, compounded by intersectional stereotypes of Africa. Our research offers novel, exploratory insights into what has been a blind spot in the emerging field of gender-lens investing: how gender bias in capital allocation to entrepreneurs is reinforced by gender bias in capital allocation to fund managers. We conclude that the field must move beyond viewing African women as beneficiaries of empowerment and put them in power of investment decisions.

45. Doctoral training to support sustainable soil geochemistry research in Africa

Abstract: Africa’s potential for scientific research is not yet being realized, for various reasons including a lack of researchers in many fields and insufficient funding. Strengthened research capacity through doctoral training programmes in higher education institutes (HEIs) in Africa, to include collaboration with national, regional and international research institutions, can facilitate self-reliant and sustainable research to support socio-economic development. In 2012, the Royal Society and the UK’s Department for International Development (now the Foreign, Commonwealth and Development Office) launched the Africa Capacity Building Initiative (ACBI) Doctoral Training Network which aimed to strengthen research capacity and training across sub-Saharan Africa. The ACBI supported 30 core PhD scholarships, all registered/supervised within African HEIs with advisory support from the UK-based institutes. Our ‘Soil geochemistry to inform agriculture and health policies’ consortium project, which was part of the ACBI doctoral training programme network, was implemented in Malawi, Zambia and Zimbabwe between 2014 and 2020. The aims of our consortium were to explore linkages between soil geochemistry, agriculture and public health for increased crop productivity, nutrition and safety of food systems and support wider training and research activities in soil science. Highlights from our consortium included: (i) the generation of new scientific evidence on linkages between soils, crops and human nutrition; (ii) securing new projects to translate science into policy and practice; and (iii) maintaining sustainable collaborative learning across the consortium. Our consortium delivered high-quality science outputs and secured new research and doctoral training funding from a variety of sources to ensure the continuation of research and training activities. For example, follow-on Global Challenges Research Funded Translation Award provided a strong evidence base on the prevalence of deficiencies in children under 5 years of age and women of reproductive age in Zimbabwe. This new evidence will contribute towards the design and implementation of a nationally representative micronutrient survey as an integral part of the Zimbabwe Demographic and Health Surveys conducted by the Ministry of Health and Child Care. The award also generated new evidence and a road map for creating quality innovative doctorates through a doctoral training landscape activity led by the Zimbabwe Council for Higher Education. Although our project and the wider ACBI has contributed to increasing the self-reliance and sustainability of research within the region, many challenges remain and ongoing investment is required.

46. Screening herbicides and herbicide mixtures to identify alternative chemical controls for resistant plantago biotypes

Abstract: Herbicide mixtures are beneficial since they delay the occurrence of resistance to herbicides, provided that the herbicides used are effective at controlling the target weed species. Recently, plantago (Plantago lanceolataL.) was found to show 23 and 10-fold-resistance to glyphosate and paraquat. Experiments were carried out under controlled conditions to determine the efficacy of various herbicide concentrations and mixtures for the control of multiple resistant plantago at the two to three leaf stage. Proven plantago resistant (R) biotypes which had been shown to survive high glyphosate and paraquat dosages were used together with one susceptible (S) biotype in each experiment. The herbicides 2-methyl-4-chlorophenoxyacetic acid (MCPA), (400 g a.i. ha−1), carfentrazone-ethyl (400 g a.i. ha−1), and glufosinate (200 g a.i. ha−1), and two combined mixtures consisting of paraquat + diquat (120 + 80 g a.i. ha−1), and terbuthylazine + S-metolachlor (497.2 + 102.8 g a.i. ha−1) were applied either alone or in mixtures resulting in 12 treatments. The herbicides and combinations were chosen for their distinct modes of action. The mixtures achieved 0% survival rates for the R and S biotypes except for glyphosate + MCPA and MCPA applied alone. The herbicide mixtures identified in the study together with other non-chemical control options may be used in the management of glyphosate- and paraquat-resistant plantago infestations.

47. Evaluation of furrow irrigation performance: Case of Kasinthula Cane Growers Scheme in Malawi

Abstract: Surface irrigation is associated with low irrigation efficiencies and exerts a lot of pressure on water resources. Despite this, the irrigation method remains dominant in Malawi and other sub-Saharan Africa countries. A need exists to improve surface irrigation efficiencies in the wake of water scarcity. Applications of surface irrigation simulation, evaluation and design (SIRMOD) software in improving surface irrigation performance have been reported worldwide. However, no documentation exists on SIRMOD application in Malawi. A study was therefore conducted to investigate how furrow irrigation system performance could be improved at Kasinthula Cane Growers Scheme in Malawi using SIRMOD software. Field data collected from the scheme were used to calibrate the model before simulating water advance and recession times. Statistical comparisons of the simulated advance and recession times with corresponding observed field data showed that the model closely simulated field conditions; hence, it was deemed suitable for the scheme. Results from SIRMOD optimization procedure indicated that application efficiencies could be improved by 32–63% through reductions in furrow lengths, water inflow sizes and inflow cutoff times. The study established the need for Malawi and other developing countries to develop policies on optimization of irrigation performance using computer models such as SIRMOD.

48. How do institutionalized supplier development initiatives affect knowledge transfer and operational performance? Evidence from SME construction companies in Zambia

Abstract: The purpose of the study is, first, to examine how, and which institutionalized supplier development initiatives are associated with knowledge transfer, and, second, to investigate the mediating role of knowledge transfer between institutionalized supplier development and operational performance. Data were collected through a survey of SME contractors in the construction industry in Zambia. A total of 171 successful questionnaires were analyzed using hierarchical regression and the bootstrapping procedure. The findings show that direct institutionalized supplier development approaches such as the 20% subcontracting policy and training are related to knowledge transfer. The findings also reveal that knowledge transfer mediates the relationship between the 20% subcontracting policy and operational performance, as well as between training and operational performance. However, there is no evidence of a relationship between knowledge transfer and indirect supplier development such as the construction finance initiative, preferential and reservation schemes. Regarding policy implications, the study suggests that policymakers should prioritize direct institutionalized supplier development initiatives that stimulate knowledge transfer. The original contribution of the article is the application of indirect and direct supplier development and knowledge transfer in the context of public-funded construction projects.

50. A 34-Year-Old Man With a Neck Mass

Abstract: A 34-year-old man presented to Queen Elizabeth Central Hospital in Blantyre, Malawi with multiple enlarged right cervical lymph nodes. He had no associated constitutional symptoms. Fine-needle aspirate (FNA) of one of the lymph nodes was negative for acid-fast bacilli (AFB) by smear microscopy. The FNA specimen was not sent for histological examination. Mycobacterial culture and Xpert MTB/RIF were not available at the time. He tested positive for HIV but CD4 T-cell count was not requested at the time of HIV diagnosis, and he did not start antiretroviral therapy (ART) pending confirmation of the cause of lymphadenopathy. Excision biopsy of the lymph nodes was planned; however, the patient was lost to follow-up before the procedure was performed.
