Dietary restriction (DR) and hypoxia (low oxygen) extend lifespan in Caenorhabditis elegansthrough the induction of a convergent downstream longevity gene, fmo-2. Flavin-containing monooxygenases (FMOs) are highly conserved xenobiotic-metabolizing enzymes with a clear role in promoting longevity in nematodes and a plausible similar role in mammals. This makes them an attractive potential target of small molecule drugs to stimulate the health-promoting effects of longevity pathways. Here, we utilize an fmo-2fluorescent transcriptional reporter in C. elegansto screen a set of 80 compounds previously shown to improve stress resistance in mouse fibroblasts. Our data show that 19 compounds significantly induce fmo-2, and 10 of the compounds induce fmo-2more than twofold. Interestingly, 9 of the 10 high fmo-2inducers also extend lifespan in C. elegans. Two of these drugs, mitochondrial respiration chain complex inhibitors, interact with the hypoxia pathway to induce fmo-2, whereas two dopamine receptor type 2 (DRD2) antagonists interact with the DR pathway to induce fmo-2, indicating that dopamine signaling is involved in DR-mediated fmo-2induction. Together, our data identify nine drugs that each (1) increase stress resistance in mouse fibroblasts, (2) induce fmo-2in C. elegans, and (3) extend nematode lifespan, some through known longevity pathways. These results define fmo-2induction as a viable approach to identifying and understanding mechanisms of putative longevity compounds.

AbstractThis article investigates how fashion and nationalism were expressed through two iconic dress styles worn by women, the qipaoin Taiwan and the ternoin the Philippines in the post-WWII era. We consider the positioning of women’s bodies in the nation-building project and how sartorial practices reflected expectations around gendered performance in the public and private spheres. Both countries emerged from domination by major powers—Japan and the US—in the post-war era and ruling elites were keen to project an image of nation that was distinctively Asian and modern, while the first ladies of both nations championed their respective styles of national dress. In the Philippines, the ternowas a fusion garment adapted over time that reflected the nation’s earlier cultural links with Spain, whereas in Taiwan the qipaomarked women’s bodies as Chinese in the public sphere as Chinese nationalists consolidated their political control over the country. We argue that the relative success and longevity of the ternoin the Philippines is due to a lengthy, organic process of internal cultural authentication prior to its take-up by former First Lady Imelda Marcos, as opposed to the top-down imposition of the qipaoon Taiwanese women’s bodies.

The Adelaide Festival, founded in 1960, continues to offer a curated program of international and domestic works, despite challenges such as COVID and changing audience tastes. This year's festival, curated by Ruth Mackenzie, prominently featured Indigenous Australian work and showcased offerings from smaller companies. Standout performances included Stephen Page's Baleen Moondjan, Jacob Boehme's Guuranda, and the Australian Dance Theatre's Marrow. The festival also included international works by directors such as Barry Kosky, Robert Lepage, and Akram Khan. Climate change has exacerbated the occurrence of large‐scale sea surface temperature anomalies, or marine heatwaves (MHWs)—extreme phenomena often associated with mass mortality events of marine organisms. Using a combination of citizen science and federal data sets, we investigated the causal mechanisms of the 2014/2015 die‐off of Cassin's Auklets (Ptychoramphus aleuticus), a small zooplanktivorous seabird, during the NE Pacific MHW of 2013–2015. Carcass deposition followed an effective reduction in the energy content of mesozooplankton, coincident with the loss of cold‐water foraging habitat caused by the intrusion of the NE Pacific MHW into the nearshore environment. Models examining interannual variability in effort‐controlled carcass abundance (2001–2014) identified the biomass of lipid‐poor zooplankton as the dominant predictor of increased carcass abundance. In 2014, Cassin's Auklets dispersing from colonies in British Columbia likely congregated into a nearshore band of cooler upwelled water and ultimately died from starvation following the shift in zooplankton composition associated with onshore transport of the NE Pacific MHW. For Cassin's Auklets, already in decline due to ocean warming, large‐scale and persistent MHWs might represent a global population precipice. During the winter of 2014/2015, thousands of Cassin's Auklets, a small seabird that breeds in the NE Pacific, were found dead on beaches from California to British Columbia, Canada. We show that wide‐scale starvation was due to a change in food quality associated with warmer ocean temperatures preceding and during the die‐off. This research highlights that more frequent and intense ocean warming events may have complex impacts on food webs with population consequences for marine predators, particularly seabirds such as Cassin's Auklets. A warm anomaly in the upper ocean, colloquially named “the Blob,” appeared in the Gulf of Alaska during the calm winter of 2013–2014, spread across the northern North Pacific (NP) Ocean, and shifted eastward and onto the Oregon shelf. At least 14 species of copepods occurred which had never been observed in shelf/slope waters off Oregon, some of which are known to have NP Gyre affinities, indicating that the source waters of the coastal “Blob” were likely of both offshore (from the west) and subtropical/tropical origin. The anomalously warm conditions were reduced during strong upwelling in spring 2015 but returned when upwelling weakened in July 2015 and transitioned to downwelling in fall 2015. The extended period of warm conditions resulted in prolonged effects on the ecosystem off central Oregon, lasting at least through 2016. Impacts to the lower trophic levels were unprecedented and include a novel plankton community composition resulting from increased copepod, diatom, and dinoflagellate species richness and increased abundance of dinoflagellates. Additionally, the multiyear warm anomalies were associated with reduced biomass of copepods and euphausiids, high abundance of larvaceans and doliolids (indictors of oligotrophic ocean conditions), and a toxic diatom bloom (Pseudo‐nitzschia) throughout the California Current in 2015, thereby changing the composition of the food web that is relied upon by many commercially and ecologically important species. During 2014 exceptionally warm water temperatures developed across a wide area off the California coast and within San Francisco Bay (SFB) and persisted into 2016. Observations and numerical model output are used to document this warming and determine its origins. The coastal warming was mostly confined to the upper 100 m of the ocean and was manifested strongly in the two leading modes of upper ocean (0–100 m) temperature variability in the extratropical eastern Pacific. Observations suggest that the coastal warming in 2014 propagated into nearshore regions from the west while later indicating a warming influence that propagated from south to north into the region associated with the 2015–2016 El Niño event. An analysis of the upper ocean (0–100 m) heat budget in a Regional Ocean Modeling System (ROMS) simulation confirmed this scenario. The results from a set of sensitivity runs with the model in which the lateral boundary conditions varied supported the conclusions drawn from the heat budget analysis. Concerning the warming in the SFB, an examination of the observations and the heat budget in an unstructured‐grid numerical model simulation suggested that the warming during the second half of 2014 and early 2016 originated in the adjacent California coastal ocean and propagated through the Golden Gate into the Bay. The finding that the coastal and Bay warming are due to the relatively slow propagation of signals from remote sources raises the possibility that such warming events may be predictable many months or even several seasons in advance. The origins of the exceptionally warm water temperatures that developed off the California coast and in San Francisco Bay were studied using observations and computer model experiments. The coastal warming was mostly confined to the upper ocean. The coastal warming in 2014 was found to have moved into coastal waters from further offshore in the northeastern Pacific. Warming persisted into 2015‐2016 as a warming influence from the south associated with the 2015‐16 El Niño event in the tropical Pacific Ocean. The model experiments suggested confirmed that propagation of the warming signals from the west and north into the California coastal ocean and suggested that the warming in San Francisco Bay was found to have originated primarily in the adjacent California coastal ocean. The finding that the coastal and Bay warming are due to the relatively slow propagation of signals from remote sources raises the possibility that such warming events may be predictable many months or even several seasons in advance. Understanding what processes govern atmospheric escape and the loss of planetary water is of paramount importance for understanding how life in the universe can exist. One mechanism thought to be important at all planets is an “ambipolar” electric field that helps ions overcome gravity. We report the discovery and first quantitative extraterrestrial measurements of such a field at the planet Venus. Unexpectedly, despite comparable gravity, we show the field to be five times stronger than in Earth's similar ionosphere. Contrary to our understanding, Venus would still lose heavy ions (including oxygen and all water‐group species) to space, even if there were no stripping by the solar wind. We therefore find that it is possible for planets to lose heavy ions to space entirely through electric forces in their ionospheres and such an “electric wind” must be considered when studying the evolution and potential habitability of any planet in any star system. Increasing global competition, shrinking product life cycles, and increasing product mix are defining a new manufacturing environment in world markets. This paper presents a case problem using Taguchi Method to find optimum design parameters for a Flexible Manufacturing System (FMS). A L8 array, signal-to-noise (S/N) ratio and analysis of variance (ANOVA) are employed to study performance characteristics of selected manufacturing system design parameters (e.g. layout, AGVs, buffers, and routings) with consideration of product mix demand. Various design and performance parameters are evaluated and compared for the original and the improved FMS. The results obtained by this method may be useful to other researchers for similar types of applications.

Natural infections of giant liver flukes (Fascioloides magna) occur primarily in cervids and bovids. In northeastern North America, a common definitive host for giant liver flukes is the white-tailed deer (Odocoileus virginianus). Giant liver flukes cannot reproduce in moose (Alces alces) and eventually die, but only after causing extensive tissue damage in the liver. We used data on the occurrence of giant liver flukes in adult moose collected between 1972 and 2000 from northeastern Minnesota, USA. These data were recorded by 93 km2sampling units (square grid of 9.66 km on each side). Sample sizes varied between 0 and 45 adult moose examined per sampling unit. We fitted a second-order global polynomial model to adjust for trends in the occurrence of flukes across the study area, modeled the de-trended data using a circular semi-variogram model, and finally kriged our data, arriving at a predicted response surface for the occurrence of liver flukes in moose. Correlational analyses indicated that the occurrence of liver flukes in moose was influenced more by the density of white-tailed deer based on rates of hunter harvest (r= 0.54) than was the proportion of wetland habitats (r= 0.25). Ordinary least-squares multiple regression (Radj= 0.29, AICc= 795.3) documented a strong relationship between the occurrence of liver flukes in moose and population density of white-tailed deer (p< 0.001) but a weaker relationship for wetland habitats (p= 0.16). A geographically weighted multiple regression produced a stronger relationship (Radj= 0.60, AICc= 765.7). Disease maps, as we developed here, are a useful geospatial tool that has relevance for understanding disease processes in moose that may be extended to other mammals.
