Previously, a silver-based disinfectant composed of a low concentration (approximately 0.015% by weight) of a suspension of silver was sporicidal with a one-minute wet-contact time. The proprietary technology, licensed by the Environmental Protection Agency, for producing the silver particles has been enhanced to produce more consistent numbers and sizes of silver particles in the active raw material. Confirmatory testing has been performed on three manufactured lots to verify the consistency of disinfectant efficacy in accordance with United States Pharmacopoeia (USP) 37-National Formulary 32. Various microorganisms, including molds and bacterial spores, were tested on stainless-steel coupons and demonstrated 2-6 log reductions with one-minute wet-contact times. These evaluations were designed to demonstrate that the enhanced disinfectant had a similar disinfectant efficacy as the previously tested product. Wheat is an important staple food worldwide, but often contaminated with moulds, which in specific cases, form toxic mycotoxins as secondary metabolites. The aim of this study was to investigate different preprocessing methods of wheat kernels that allow active agents such as functional microorganisms and enzymes to pass through the water-repellent hyaline layer in order to break down possible mycotoxins into less or non-toxic compounds. To be able to assess the processing efficacy, a qualitative visualisation method was developed and implemented. A wide range of processing techniques to perforate the outer layers while maintaining structural integrity of the kernel were tested, including ohmic heating, pulsed electric fields (PEF), ultrasonication, cold needle perforation (CNP), heat stress and steam explosion. It was shown that both the application of PEF as well as CNP are promising paths to perforate the outer wheat layers. The effectiveness of CNP was shown through a combined microscopic approach involving scanning electron microscopy and fluorescence microscopy with fluorescing particles in the size range of both enzymes and lactic acid bacteria. Researchers at Chulalongkorn University in Bangkok, Thailand conducted a study to investigate the effectiveness of dimethyl dicarbonate (DMDC) in inhibiting the growth of Escherichia coli and spoilage microbes in passion fruit juice (PFJ) during refrigerated storage. Seven different mycotoxins, including aflatoxin M1, ochratoxin A, sterigmatocystin, zearalenone, roridin E, verrucarin A, and enniatin B1 that have been associated with human illness were tested by LC/MS/MS in urine samples of a control group of 89 healthy adult volunteers and 103 adult patients suspected of mold illness based on clinical symptoms assessed by their physicians and findings of mold growth in their homes or offices. Values for all the mycotoxins tested were significantly increased in the mold patient group compared to the control group. Markers for mold colonization of the gastrointestinal tract were all significantly more elevated in the mold-exposed group compared to the control group. Lactic acid, oxalic acid, and pyroglutamic acid were all significantly higher in the mold-exposed patient group compared to the control group. Succinic acid, a marker of mitochondrial function was also higher in the mold-exposed group but did not reach statistical significance.
