1. Online Capacitor Condition Monitoring for Cascaded-H-Bridge Type Converters

Abstract

The cascaded-H-bridge (CHB) type converter is widely used in grid-tied applications, such as static var generator (SVG), static synchronous compensator (STATCOM), and photovoltaic system. In these situations, the dc-link capacitor is a key component, which serves as energy buffer and determines the quality of output waveform. Thus, acquiring the health status of these capacitors is critical for the reliable operation of the whole system. In this article, a general capacitor condition monitoring approach based on improved recursive least square (RLS) for CHB-type converters is proposed. The key equations are deduced from the basic control strategies and no extra sensors are introduced. The only signal required is the dc-link voltage, which is already collected for control purpose. The RLS algorithm is modified by adding self-adapted forgetting factor, to achieve a good performance on both identification accuracy and tracking speed. The capacitance estimation error is below 1%, and shows good feasibility in various working conditions and applications. The principle, main steps, case study, and proof-of-concept of the proposed method are presented.

2. A Hybrid PWM Pattern of Three-Phase Buck PFC Converter With Low Common-Mode Voltage and Low Voltage Stress

Abstract

A three-phase buck power factor correction (PFC) converter with high frequency and high power density faces the problems of high common-mode (CM) voltage and high voltage stress on switching devices. In this letter, the influence of different pulsewidth modulation (PWM) patterns on CM voltage and voltage stress is studied, and the high-frequency current paths in the three-phase buck PFC converter considering parasitic parameters is revealed. A hybrid PWM pattern is proposed to reduce the CM voltage and voltage stress on switching devices. An experimental prototype 200-kHz switching frequency is built to verify the analysis results in this letter.

3. Multiple Open-Switch Fault Diagnosis for Three-Phase Four-Leg Inverter Under Unbalanced Loads via Interval Sliding Mode Observer

Abstract

The three-phase four-leg inverter has garnered significant attention for its advantages in addressing unbalanced loads and other factors. However, compared to traditional three-phase three-leg inverters, the introduction of additional branches and the occurrence of unbalanced three-phase currents increase the complexity of open-switch (OS) fault modes and types, posing challenges for fault diagnosis. In this article, a multiple OS fault diagnosis strategy is designed specifically for three-phase four-leg inverters operating under unbalanced loads. The method begins with the design of a novel interval sliding mode observer (SMO) that accurately and rapidly estimates phase currents through the use of an adaptive reaching law. By using the interval characteristics of the innovative interval SMO, the upper and lower bounds estimations of the observer are then utilized to design a fault detection parameter and its adaptive thresholds to ensure the robustness of the detection algorithm. In addition, single OS fault identification and multiple OS fault identification methods are developed. By combining the detection variables with the identification methods, the proposed approach enables the diagnosis of 36 different types of OS faults. Hardware-in-the-loop test results validate the efficient diagnosis of OS faults in three-phase four-leg inverters utilizing the proposed approach.

4. Three-Phase Current Source Rectifier With Reduced Voltage Stress on Switching Devices and Common Mode Current Mitigation

Abstract

The three-phase current source rectifier (3ph-CSR) with high input voltage and high switching frequency faces two major issues: one is the high power loss dissipated in bridge legs, and the other is the influence of common mode (CM) current on the input current quality. A family of 3ph-CSR topologies with reduced voltage stress on switching devices and CM current mitigation is introduced in this article. The switching devices in conventional 3ph-CSR always withstand the input line-to-line voltage, while the voltage stress on switching devices in the proposed 3ph-CSR is lower than the amplitude of the input phase voltage. Moreover, the proposed 3ph-CSR enables the CM currents to circulate inside the rectifiers, without flowing to the input side, so the input current quality can be improved effectively. A 1.5 kW experimental prototype of the proposed six-switch 3ph-CSR is built to verify the analysis results.

Abstract

Sparsentan, a novel, non-immunosuppressive, single-molecule, dual endothelin angiotensin receptor antagonist, significantly reduced proteinuria versus irbesartan, an angiotensin II receptor blocker, at 36 weeks (primary endpoint) in patients with immunoglobulin A nephropathy in the phase 3 PROTECT trial's previously reported interim analysis. Here, we report kidney function and outcomes over 110 weeks from the double-blind final analysis.

7. A Partition Decoupling Algorithm for Compact Thermal Model in Multichip IGBT Modules

Abstract

This letter proposes a partition decoupling algorithm for the compact thermal model to reduce the computation burden in the multichip insulated gate bipolar transistor modules. As a typical coupled system, the compact thermal model is split into separate thermal models with several shared interfaces. The interface data, coupling power loss, coming from the previous time step is used to calculate the real temperature in the current time step. The proposed algorithm transforms the spatial coupling of the compact thermal model into the temporal coupling. Furthermore, based on the proposed partition decoupling algorithm, some more loosely coupled algorithms are also designed. Finally, both simulation and experiment are conducted to verify three loosely coupled algorithms.

8. A Simultaneous Diagnosis Method for Power Switch and Current Sensor Faults in Grid-Connected Three-Level NPC Inverters

Abstract

A simultaneous diagnosis method for power switch open-circuit faults and current sensor faults of grid-connected three-level neutral point clamped (NPC) inverters is proposed herein. First, by designing the adaptive reaching law and reducing the steady-state resonance, a novel interval sliding model observer is developed to track and estimate the three-phase currents accurately and rapidly. Next, a faulty phase detection scheme using an adaptive threshold is proposed to achieve sensitive and robust detection results. Also, the measured three-phase currents sum and estimated three-phase currents sum are used to distinguish power switch open-circuit faults and current sensor faults. Subsequently, a faulty switch location method and the current sensor fault type identification method are proposed, using some of the same identification variables. Finally, combining the faulty phase detection variables with the identification methods ensures the feasibility of the detection and identification of 12 open-circuit faults and 9 current sensor faults. The hardware-in-the-loop test results are performed to validate the effectiveness and robustness of the proposed method.

Abstract

This article presents a reduced-order observer-based simultaneous diagnosis strategy for grid-tied neutral point clamped (NPC) inverters subjected to open-switch and current sensor faults. First, the augmented descriptor system is constructed for the NPC inverter to transfer the current sensor fault into a generalized state vector. Then, the matrix transformations are applied to decouple the open-switch fault from the inverter system state and the current sensor fault. Subsequently, a reduced-order observer is developed for the transformed augmented descriptor system to achieve a simultaneous precise estimation of the phase current and the current sensor fault. Finally, using the estimation results, a diagnosis algorithm with an adaptive threshold is proposed, which can not only distinguish between current sensor faults and open-switch faults but also locate the faulty power switch and estimate different types of current sensor faults. Experimental results and comparisons are provided to verify the robustness and effectiveness of the proposed fault diagnosis algorithm.

10. Anomaly Detection of Mountain Photovoltaic Power Plant Based on Spectral Clustering

Abstract

Mountainous photovoltaic (PV) power plants cover a large area and are distributed dispersedly. The construction surface is complex and the slope is large. It is difficult to find and locate faults when dealing with defects. Effective anomaly detection and fault location technology can not only improve the reliability and stability of the power plant but also reduce the operation and maintenance costs. Because of the terrain and the influence of construction, the radiation received by each group string at the same time point may be different, which brings great difficulties to anomaly detection. In this article, a method based on spectral clustering is proposed for anomaly detection of mountain PV power plants. The data is preprocessed by filtering and reconstruction. By sorting the time series current data, the influence of dip angle and azimuth is eliminated to a certain extent. Further, the normal and abnormal strings can be distinguished by spectral clustering. Using current time series data, the proposed method can detect anomalies effectively in different weather without additional irradiance and temperature data. Moreover, since the high-dimensional data can be processed by spectral clustering, the process of feature extraction can be greatly simplified. The proposed algorithm is validated by the actual data of PV power plants, which nicely verifies that the anomaly diagnosis method can effectively identify anomaly clusters.

Abstract

Dual second-order generalized integrator phase-locked loop (DSOGI-PLL) is widely used in grid-connected system for grid synchronization because of its simple implementation and good filtering capability. However, the frequency characteristics of DSOGI-PLL affect the impedance modeling of the system, which in turn affect the impedance-based stability analysis. In order to improve the accuracy of system modeling, in this paper, the equivalent transfer function of positive-sequence calculator (PSC) block constructed in αβreference frame in DSOGI-PLL is presented in dqreference frame, where the relationship between DSOGI-PLL and traditional synchronous reference frame PLL (SRF-PLL) small-signal model is investigated. Then, based on the established model, DSOGI-PLL and SRF-PLL are compared from the tracking characteristics and robustness characteristics. It is further demonstrated that DSOGI-PLL is able to improve the robustness performance of PLL while maintaining the same tracking performance as SRF-PLL. Finally, simulation results are presented to validate the established model and frequency characteristic analysis.

12. An Improved Virtual Inertia Control Strategy of DFIG-Based Wind Turbines for Grid Frequency Support

Abstract

This article proposes an improved virtual inertia control strategy, which reduces the lag effect of a low-pass filter in conventional control and increases the speed of virtual inertia control in wind turbines. The grid frequency obtained by phase locked loop (PLL) must pass through a low- pass filter with a small cutoff frequency under distorted grid voltage. The delay caused by the low- pass filter conflicts with the goal of fast support required for virtual inertia control. This article analyzes the influence of filter on system stability and response speed in frequency detection. First, the advantages and disadvantages of differential feed-forward (DFF) control are proposed and analyzed. Then, a lag-lead-based phase compensator (LLPC) scheme is proposed to provide better system stability and rapidity. Finally, the effectiveness of the proposed control strategy is validated on an 11-kW doubly fed induction generator (DFIG) platform.

13. Improved Model-Based Phase-Shift Control for Fast Dynamic Response of Dual-Active-Bridge DC/DC Converters

Abstract

Fast dynamic response of the output voltage is an essential requirement for dual-active-bridge (DAB) dc/dc converters under the operation of the voltage source. This article proposes an improved model-based phase-shift control (MPSC) strategy that combines model-based control with the design of feedback regulators and load current feedforward (LCFF) regulators. The improved MPSC strategy can ensure that the DAB has high-bandwidth control performance over the entire transmission power range without changing the controller parameters online. The design of controller parameters is simple and has the same model parameter as sensitive as MPSC. Its utility and effectiveness are verified by simulations and experiments.

14. Analysis and Suppression of Resonant Current Envelope Ripple of LLC Converter in Cascaded Modular PV Solid-State Transformer

Abstract

Featured with the advantages of expandable modular structure, simple layout, and low dependence on copper and steel, three-phase solid-state transformer-based cascaded H-bridge (HB) topology has been replacing traditional inverters in high-voltage and high-power photovoltaic power generation applications. However, due to the double line-frequency power fluctuation on the dc side of HB converters, if the LLC topology is used as the front-stage isolated dc/dc converter, its resonant current will produce an envelope ripple with the same frequency. The envelope ripple will not only increase the current stress of switching devices and diodes in LLC converter but also increase the losses of switching devices and magnetic components. Aiming at this problem, this article analyzes the mechanism of enveloping ripple in detail by mean of the concept of calculus, expounds the influence of envelope ripple on the whole system, and then proposes a control method to suppress envelope ripple of resonant current. The validity of the proposed method is verified by simulation and experimental results.

15. Analysis of online impedance measurement range based on voltage disturbance injection

Abstract

The harmonic injection method is often used to measure the impedance of grid-connected inverter, which is necessary for impedance-based stability analysis of grid-connected systems. This paper proposes an online impedance measurement range analysis method that takes into account the grid impedance, electrical signal measurement range, and the upper limit of safety response of the equipment under disturbance in online measurement. This method provides a basis for the verification of impedance measurement results. It also can guide the design of the amplitude of the injected disturbance. The method helps to provide more accurate impedance measurement results, which is important for impedance-based stability analysis. Finally, this paper verifies the proposed impedance measurement range through simulation.

16. A virtual resistor design method based on voltage harmonic amplification factor for active damper used in DFIG system

Abstract

When grid impedance cannot be ignored, high-frequency harmonic amplification often occurs when Doubly-Fed Induction Generator (DFIG) generation system is connected to a non-ideal grid with background noise. This paper analyzes the mechanism of high-frequency harmonic amplification of DFIG wind power generation system under non-ideal grid, and quantifies the damping through the equivalent RLC one-port impedance model. The concept of voltage amplification factor is proposed to guide the design of virtual resistor for harmonic suppression. Based on the design results, the virtual resistor is realized by an active damper connected in parallel with the DFIG system at the point of common coupling (PCC). Considering the limit of this device, this paper designs the lower limit of the virtual resistor in case of over-modulation problem. Finally, a controller hardware-in-the-loop experiment is carried out based on the RT-LAB platform, and the experimental results verified the correctness of the analysis and the effectiveness of the device.

17. Reconfiguration modulation strategy analysis for proactive adaptability of the monitored inverter to on-line monitoring system of IGBT modules

Abstract

To realize on-line monitoring for insulated-gate bipolar transistor (IGBT) modules in the three-level neutral point clamped (NPC) inverters, a reconfiguration modulation strategy is proposed. The saturated voltage drop (VCE) is one of the most common diagnostic signs of IGBTs’ healthy status due to the advantages of monitoring method such as simple theory, mature implementation, and accurate measurement, and the method to extract VCE in the monitoring system has been researched in the previous study. On this basis, considering realizing on-line monitoring process, essential supported hardware and proactive on-line monitoring environment are needed to guarantee the safe and friendly on-line monitoring implementation. Analysis has been made to show that the on-line monitoring system is able to work regularly by just making use of the inherent O state of a three-level NPC inverter in some circumstances. But to guarantee the monitoring process and the safety of the monitored NPC inverter, the novel reconfiguration strategy is a kind of necessary and essential means to create an on-line monitoring environment, and it is proposed and researched in this paper. Through theoretical derivation, the optimization of reconfiguration strategy is obtained. The reconfiguration strategy proposed in this research has been achieved and its validity is proved based on experimental results.

18. Stability Study and Nonlinear Analysis of DC–DC Power Converters With Constant Power Loads at the Fast Timescale

Abstract

Rapidly growing distributed renewable networks make an increasing demand for various types of power converters to feed different loads. Power converters with constant power load (CPL) are one typical configuration that can degrade the stability of the power conversion system due to the negative impedance characteristic. This article presents a nonlinear analysis method using the developed complete-cycle solution matrix method by transforming the original linear time-variant system into a summation of segmented linear time-invariant systems. Thus, the stability of the nonlinear system can be studied using a series of the corresponding state transition matrix and saltation matrix. As this derived matrix contains all the comprehensive information relating to the system's stability, the influence of the CPL to system's fast-timescale stability in both continuous conduction mode and the discontinuous conduction mode can be fully investigated and analyzed. The phenomena of the fast-timescale instability around switching frequency for power converters with a CPL are observed and investigated numerically. Finally, experimental results have proven the analysis and verified the effectiveness of the developed method.
