Brain clocks, which quantify discrepancies between brain age and chronological age, hold promise for understanding brain health and disease. However, the impact of diversity (including geographical, socioeconomic, sociodemographic, sex and neurodegeneration) on the brain-age gap is unknown. We analyzed datasets from 5,306 participants across 15 countries (7 Latin American and Caribbean countries (LAC) and 8 non-LAC countries). Based on higher-order interactions, we developed a brain-age gap deep learning architecture for functional magnetic resonance imaging (2,953) and electroencephalography (2,353). The datasets comprised healthy controls and individuals with mild cognitive impairment, Alzheimer disease and behavioral variant frontotemporal dementia. LAC models evidenced older brain ages (functional magnetic resonance imaging: mean directional error = 5.60, root mean square error (r.m.s.e.) = 11.91; electroencephalography: mean directional error = 5.34, r.m.s.e. = 9.82) associated with frontoposterior networks compared with non-LAC models. Structural socioeconomic inequality, pollution and health disparities were influential predictors of increased brain-age gaps, especially in LAC (R² = 0.37, F² = 0.59, r.m.s.e. = 6.9). An ascending brain-age gap from healthy controls to mild cognitive impairment to Alzheimer disease was found. In LAC, we observed larger brain-age gaps in females in control and Alzheimer disease groups compared with the respective males. The results were not explained by variations in signal quality, demographics or acquisition methods. These findings provide a quantitative framework capturing the diversity of accelerated brain aging.

Aim: To assess levels of anxiety in a large cohort of adolescents that participated in different sport types and are characterized by varying performance levels. Subject and methods: Cross-sectional study based on a large cohort. Self-reported questionnaires which were applied to 10,248 adolescents aged 11–19 years and recruited from secondary education centers, sport clubs, national federations, and sports technification centers those integrated disciplines included in the Summer Olympic Games program. Results: Participation in competitive sports and high physical activity levels were both associated with low anxiety levels. Further, national and international athletes had lower anxiety levels than regional athletes independently of the type of sport. Adolescents characterized by the lowest physical activity levels reported highest anxiety levels. Conclusion: Increased physical activity levels and specifically participation in competitive sports is related to lower anxiety levels regardless of the sport type. Adolescents who compete at a national and international level reported low anxiety level, meanwhile adolescents who don’t fulfil physical activity recommendations reported the highest anxiety levels.

Introduction:Refractory cases of alopecia areata (AA) may be considered a therapeutic challenge. Intralesional methotrexate (IL-MTX) has been used in other dermatological diseases rather than AA. Likewise, its topical use as an immunosuppressant drug may be of interest for the control of the lymphoid infiltrate in AA. On the other hand, the use of fractional ablative laser is supported in literature as an alternative or complementary treatment in AA, whilst the generation of columns of thermal damage may favour the migration of cells and cytokines that are beneficial. Case Presentation:In this paper, we present 2 cases in which IL-MTX and ablative fractional CO2 laser were combined with excellent outcomes. Conclusion:Previous research encompasses a total of 23 patients. Most patients presented with patchy AA. The doses administered ranged from 2.5 to 50 mg with an average frequency of 3 weeks. On average, most patients required a minimum of 3 sessions. One case employed 1% topical methotrexate ointment. Adverse local events were mild and transient. In conclusion, the concomitant application of these treatments has not been reported previously. Specific recommendations relating to the appropriate dosing of the drug, frequency of administration, and requirements for analytical control studies should be determined in further studies.

AbstractPost-exercise elevations of cardiac troponin T (cTnT) and I (cTnI) are often used in isolation but interpreted interchangeably. Research suggests, however, that post-exercise cTn kinetic might differ with each isoform. In this cross-sectional observational study, we collected blood samples before, immediately after (5 minutes), and at 1-, 3-, 6-, 12-, and 24-hour post-exercise in a mixed cohort of 56 participants after a distance-trial of 60 min continuous swimming (age range from 14 to 22, 57.1% female). Cardiac troponin kinetics were modelled using Bayesian mixed-effects models to estimate time to peak (TTP) and peak concentration (PC) for each isoform, while controlling for participants sex, tanner stage and average relative heart rate during the test. Exercise induced an elevation of cTnT and cTnI in 93% and 75% of the participants, respectively. Cardiac troponin T peaked earlier, at 2.9 h (CI: 2.6 – 3.2 h) post-exercise, whereas cTnI peaked later, at 4.5 h (CI: 4.2 – 4.9 h). Peak concentrations for cTnT and cTnI were 2.5 ng/L, CI: 0 – 11.2 ng/L and 2.16 ng/L, CI: 0 – 22.7 ng/L, respectively. Additionally, we did not observe a systematic effect of sex and maturational status mediating cTn responses.

Estudios previos muestran resultados académicos inferiores en escolares con trastorno del desarrollo del lenguaje (TDL) y/o dificultades de lectura (DL). El objetivo del presente trabajo es evaluar si algunas de las medidas propuestas por la escuela inclusiva para enriquecer los procesos de enseñanza-aprendizaje ejercen un efecto positivo sobre las calificaciones de escolares con TDL o DL. Se espera que las medidas de educación inclusiva que fomentan las habilidades comunicativas individualizadas ejerzan un efecto compensatorio en el alumnado con dificultades.

We observe that a quasiconvex function which is evenly quasiconvex at a point is not necessarily Greenberg–Pierskalla (briefly, G-P) subdifferentiable at that point, but we prove that a quasiconvex function which is upper semicontinuous on the segments of its effective domain is G-P subdifferentiable on the relative interior of this effective domain. We give an application to surrogate duality in quasiconvex programming.

The association between dipeptidyl peptidase 4 inhibitors (DPP-4i) and bullous pemphigoid (BP) has been demonstrated in several studies. The main aim of this study was to estimate the use of DPP-4i treatment in patients diagnosed with BP in our setting.

Syphilis is a sexually transmitted infection caused by Treponema pallidum, subspecies pallidum. As these bacteria are difficult to culture, syphilis must be diagnosed by serologic testing. The introduction of automated treponemal tests has led to changes in the traditional diagnostic algorithm for syphilis, which began with a nontreponemal test. We present 15 cases of primary syphilis detected using these new tools and review the microbiologic techniques used for the diagnosis of early syphilis.

The epidemiology of genital herpes has changed in recent years with an increase in the incidence of herpes simplex virus type 1 (HSV-1) infection. The aim of this study was to analyze the clinical and epidemiological characteristics of patients diagnosed with genital herpes.

Aims and Objectives: This study aimed to characterize a coniferyl alcohol dehydrogenase from sugarcane stalks. Also, the purification of CAD from sugarcane stalks was also carried out to study kinetic properties and substrate specificity. Background: Sugarcane plants contain an alcohol dehydrogenase able to reduce both coniferyl and sinapyl aldehydes to their correspondent alcohols, although there are reasonable grounds for suspecting that these are two distinct enzymes. Methods: The enzyme, coniferyl alcohol dehydrogenase was 125-fold purified from sugarcane stalks. Its activity was estimated by HPLC by calculating the amount of product formed. Results: The enzyme showed an optimum pH value of 7.9, at an optimum temperature of 20-22°C and a molecular mass of 48 kDa. The Km value for coniferyl alcohol was 3.03 μM and the enzyme was shown to be inhibited by an excess of the substrate from 17 μM. This dehydrogenase showed a similar affinity to sinapyl alcohol (Km 1.78 μM). Conclusion: This paper provides circumstantial evidence about the existence of two different alcohol dehydrogenases, specific to each of the substrates.

Las unidades de demencia (UD) realizan un abordaje integral y especializado de las personas con demencia. Su evaluación suele limitarse a aspectos asistenciales. El objetivo del trabajo fue conocer la satisfacción y calidad percibida por familiares/cuidadores de pacientes atendidos por una UD.

The incidence of urethritis due to Haemophilusspecies is increasing. The main aim of this study was to describe the clinical and microbiological characteristics of patients with this form of urethritis. A secondary aim was to discuss the adequacy of treatments in patients with different types of antibiotic resistance.

An alternative approach for the analysis and the numerical approximation of singular perturbation problems, using a variational framework, is presented. It is based on the natural idea of minimizing the residual of the differential equation measured in the $$L^2$$ L2 norm. By this strategy, the approximation is based in the solution of a set of linear problems giving the descent step directions of the problem. This is the main advantage of our approach, since we can use stable and convergent methods for linear problems (without assuming the knowledge of good initial guesses used in the approximation of the associated non-linear systems necessary in Newton-type methods). Remember that for this type of problems, we should use implicit methods. We prove that our procedure can never get stuck in local minima, and the error decreases until getting to the original solution independent of the perturbation parameter. Finally, we include some numerical examples.

The linguistic profile of Parkinson's disease (PD) is characterized by difficulties in processing units which denote bodily movements. However, the available evidence has low ecological validity, as it stems from atomistic tasks which are never encountered in real life. Here, we assessed whether such deficits also occur for meanings evoked by context-rich narratives, considering patients with and without mild cognitive impairment (PD-MCI and PD-nMCI, respectively) and matched controls for each group. Participants read two naturalistic stories (an action text and a neutral text) and responded to questions tapping the appraisal of verb-related and circumstantial information. In PD-MCI, impairments in the appraisal of action meanings emerged alongside difficulties in other categories, but they were unique in their independence from general cognitive dysfunction. However, in PD-nMCI, deficits were observed only for action meanings, irrespective of the patients' domain-general skills (executive functions and general cognitive state). Also, using multiple group discriminant function analyses, we found that appraisal of action meanings was the only discourse-level variable that robustly contributed to classifying PD-MCI patients from controls (with an accuracy of 88% for all participants and for each sample separately). Moreover, this variable actually superseded a sensitive executive battery in discriminating between PD-nMCI and controls (with a combined accuracy of 83% for all participants, correctly classifying 79.2% of patients and 87.5% of controls). In sum, action appraisal deficits seem to constitute both a hallmark of naturalistic discourse processing in PD and a sensitive subject-level marker for patients with and without MCI. Such findings highlight the relevance of ecological measures of embodied cognitive functions in the assessment of this population.

The synthesis, characterization, and photophysical properties of a wide variety of bis-cyclometalated Pt(IV) complexes featuring a C2-symmetrical or unsymmetrical {Pt(ppy)2} unit (symor unsymcomplexes, respectively; ppy = C-deprotonated 2-phenylpyridine) and different ancillary ligands are reported. Complexes sym-[Pt(ppy)2X2] (X = OTf–, OAc–) were obtained by chloride abstraction from sym-[Pt(ppy)2Cl2] using the corresponding AgX salts, and the triflate derivative was employed to obtain homologous complexes with X = F–, Br–, I–, trifluoroacetate (TFA–). Complexes unsym-[Pt(ppy)2(Me)X] (X = OTf–, F–) were prepared by reacting unsym-[Pt(ppy)2(Me)Cl] with AgOTf or AgF, respectively, and the triflate derivative was employed as precursor for the synthesis of the homologues with X = Br–, I–, or TFA–through its reaction with the appropriate anionic ligands. The previously reported complexes unsym-[Pt(ppy)2X2] (X = Cl–, Br–, OAc–, TFA–) are included in the photophysical study to assess the influence of the arrangement of the cyclometalated ligands. Density functional theory (DFT) and time-dependent DFT calculations on selected derivatives were performed for a better interpretation of the observed excited-state properties. Complexes sym-[Pt(ppy)2X2] (except X = I–) exhibit phosphorescent emissions in fluid solutions at 298 K arising from essentially 3LC(ppy) excited states, which are very similar in shape and energy. However, their efficiencies are heavily dependent on the nature of the ancillary ligands, which affect the energy of deactivating ligand-to-ligand charge transfer (LLCT) or ligand-to-metal charge transfer (LMCT) states. The fluoride derivative sym-[Pt(ppy)2F2] shows the highest quantum yield of this series (Φ = 0.398), mainly because the relatively high metal-to-ligand charge transfer admixture in its emitting state leads to a high radiative rate constant. Complexes unsym-[Pt(ppy)2X2] emit from 3LC(ppy) states in frozen matrices at 77 K, but their emissions are totally quenched in fluid solution at 298 K because of the presence of low-lying, dissociative LMCT excited states, which also cause photoisomerization reactions. Complexes unsym-[Pt(ppy)2(Me)X] (X = F–, Cl–, Br–, TFA–) show strong emissions in fluid solutions at 298 K (Φ = 0.52–0.63) because deactivating LMCT states lie at high energies. However, derivative unsym-[Pt(ppy)2(Me)I] is only weakly emissive at 298 K because of the presence of low-lying LLCT [p(I) → π*(ppy)] states.

In this study, we have used affinity chromatography to purify the lectins from a chlorolichen, Evernia prunastri(L.) Ach., and a cyanolichen, Peltigera canina(Ach.) Schard. These species secrete lectins that display arginase activity in addition to their role as recognition proteins. We found that fluorescently labeled lectins display efficient binding to their ligands on the cell wall. Binding was stronger when the lectin reacted with the producing (homologous) photobiont (alga or cyanobacteria) than with the nonproducing (heterologous) species used throughout the study. To address the specificity of lectin binding, we performed desorption experiments of cell-bound lectins with different hexoses. We found that Evernialectin is only desorbed by galactose, consistent with its specific binding to a single polygalactosylated ligand. Conversely, Peltigeralectin is desorbed not only by galactose, but also by mannose. This indicates that Peltigeralectin recognizes not only α-d-galactose-containing ligands, but also ligands containing α-d-mannose moieties.

Alcoholic cirrhosis (AC) is a common cause of death among individuals abusing alcohol. In the last resort, liver transplantation (LT) is considered the only solution to save the patient's life, generating socioeconomic and public health problems. Clinical and sociodemographic characteristics, rejection frequency, and short‐ and long‐term graft survival are not well known in end‐term ACpatients undergoing LT. The aim was to determine the sociodemographic and clinical characteristics, their incidence in LT, main pre‐ and posttransplant complications, and short‐ and long‐term post‐transplant graft survival in ACpatients in southeastern Spain. The medical records of 1,026 patients who underwent LTover the last 23 years were retrospectively reviewed, and demographic data and posttransplant survivals were analyzed and compared. Biochemical characteristics, major pre‐ and posttransplant complications and short‐ and long‐term survivals were analyzed in a total of 398 male patients with AC undergoing LT. AC and viral cirrhosis are the main indications for LT in our study. Mostly represented in our study are ACmen without associated viral infections with a mean age of 53.06 years. Main pretransplant complications in ACpatients are ascites (78.3%) and encephalopathy (43.5%), while acute graft rejection is the most common liver posttransplant complication (26.6%), nevertheless with low graft loss frequency (1.1%). ACand autoimmune cirrhosis show the best posttransplant survival in both the short and long term. Patients with ACincluded on the waiting list for LTwere Child‐Pugh class B(52.1%) and Model for End‐Stage Liver Disease score of 10 to 19 (71.2%). The highest percentage of ACpatient survival was observed at 1 year posttransplant (81.2%) and progressively decreased over time up to 10 years posttransplant (69.6%). Pretransplant complications such as ascites and encephalopathy did not have an influence on the percentage of posttransplant survivals, although better survival rates were observed in nonviral ACpatients. AC without viral infections is the main indication for LTin southeastern Spain although its frequency has decreased in last decade. ACis a good indication for LTfor its high survival rate and few posttransplant complications. Despite having a high percentage of pretransplant complications (ascites and encephalopathy) but does not appear to influence survivals being observed posttransplant survival rates above those expected. Conversely, viral infections in the patient with ACdecrease patient survivals. The main future goals are design new strategies to detect, treat, and reduce ACfrequency in our population and know alcoholic recidivism rate posttransplant in our population. This figure shows Kaplan–Meier patient's survival curves according to the main indications for liver transplant in south‐eastern Spain in the short‐ and long‐term over 10 years. El objetivo de este trabajo es explorar la relación existente entre el trastorno específico del lenguaje (TEL) y las habilidades sociales en la preadolescencia. Se trata de un área poco estudiada pero que tiene especial interés dado el gran peso que cobran las relaciones sociales y las amistades íntimas en la adolescencia para el desarrollo psicosocial del individuo. Para ello, se han comparado 2 grupos de 18 sujetos cada uno: un grupo integrado por niños con TEL y otro por niños de la misma edad con desarrollo típico. Las medidas utilizadas se obtuvieron mediante el Sistema de evaluación de la conducta de niños y adolescentes (BASC; Reynolds y Kamphaus, 1992; adaptación española de González et al., 2004), recogiendo las valoraciones de los tutores en habilidades sociales, liderazgo, adaptabilidad y habilidades adaptativas. Los resultados mostraron que los niños con TEL tenían un índice menor que sus iguales en todas las variables medidas excepto en adaptabilidad. Estos resultados son indicativos de que los niños con TEL presentan un déficit también en habilidades sociales y liderazgo. Por lo tanto, es necesario tener en cuenta otras áreas, además de la lingüística, en la intervención con los niños con TEL.

In some recent works, we have proposed a new approximation of stiff systems of differential equations based on an analysis of a certain error functional associated, in a natural way, with the original problem. By using standard descent schemes, the procedure can never get stuck in local minima (since the error functional only has a minimum), but will always and steadily decrease the error until getting to the original solution (the only minimum). In this paper, we propose a variable step-size implementation of our variational approach. We are able to perform this implementation without any extra functional evaluation. We show the efficacy of this new implementation on some standard problems found in the literature. [ABSTRACT FROM AUTHOR]

This document tries to give an overview of the different aspects that carries computer-aided ship design. It presents a little history and its evolution. It reviews the modeling, analysis and design of the ship structure. Basically, it points out the mathematical tools used in these applications.

En este trabajo se analiza el efecto de los cambios en las políticas y criterios contables sobre el patrimonio neto consolidado a 1 de enero de 2008 de los grupos españoles, no cotizados, que no aplicaron las NIIF como consecuencia de la adaptación de la normativa contable, instrumentada a través del nuevo PGC y la nota explicativa del ICAC sobre las normas de formulación de cuentas anuales consolidadas. Asimismo, se evalúan los efectos de la transición a la nueva normativa teniendo en cuenta el tamaño de los grupos. Con este objetivo, se examinaron las cuentas anuales consolidadas de los 100 mayores grupos españoles formuladas de acuerdo con la normativa española, buscando diferencias significativas entre los patrimonios netos bajo ambas normativas. Los resultados obtenidos ofrecen evidencia sobre la ausencia de impacto significativo en el patrimonio neto consolidado de estos grupos españoles en la transición a las nuevas normas contables del ejercicio 2007 al 2008 y, con ello, de que la información resulta útil para los usuarios en cuanto a su comparabilidad. Por consiguiente, el hecho de que el Gobierno permitiera para los grupos (y empresas) españoles que no aplican NIIF no presentar información comparativa, puede considerarse finalmente una decisión acertada, pues ha facilitado la transición a las nuevas normas sin coste de comparabilidad y sin problemas de presentación y conversión de las cifras anteriores.

AbstractWe compared the response of high-sensitivity cardiac troponin T (hs-cTnT) after 60 min of swimming, running and cycling in well-trained triathletes. The maximal increase in hs-cTnT was similar in all exercise bouts (swimming 453, cycling 349 and running 471) although there was substantial individual variability in peak hs-cTnT. The post-exercise kinetics for hs-cTnT was consistent. The change in hs-cTnT was correlated between trials. In all trials, hs-cTnT had largely returned to baseline levels 24 h post-exercise. In summary, an increase in hs-cTnT was apparent in all triathletes independent of exercise mode and despite variable peak data the consistent kinetics over 24 h post-exercise would suggest this represents a physiological phenomenon.

We obtain a simple integration formula for the Fenchel subdifferentials on Euclidean spaces and analyze some of its consequences. For functions defined on locally convex spaces, we present a similar result in terms of 𝜖-subdifferentials.

The aims of this study were to determine the prevalence of exocrine pancreatic insufficiency (EPI) and chronic pancreatitis (CP) in patients with chronic alcoholic liver disease and to analyze the possible associated factors.

Citrus fruits play an important part in the Spanish agricultural sector. These orchards could play an important role as a terrestrial C sink and contribute to C fixation. We proposed quantifying the net primary production in different‐aged citrus trees through the measurement of annual increases in the C content of the biomass of trees of different ages completely excavated. The measured net primary production in mature citrus was 27 kg C tree–1(1143 g C m–2yr–1; 11.4 Mg C ha–1yr–1) with a similar behavior to that of different forests. Moreover, in this experiment, allometric equations for the estimation of annual net primary production in citrus orchards based on the relationship between net primary production and biometric variables were established. These equations could be a useful tool to calculate the potential C fixation in citrus areas. Canopy volume was the best variable for predicting above‐ and belowground biomass. Leaf area index and trunk diameter could also be selected as reliable and easily measurable variables to estimate net primary production in the whole tree.

Killer immunoglobulin-like receptors (KIRs) bind human leukocyte antigen (HLA) class-I (HLA-I) ligands and regulate functions of natural killer cells and subsets of T cells. KIRHLA-I interactions allow predicting natural killer cell alloreactivity in hematopoietic stem cell transplantation and in HLA-compatible kidney transplants, but its meaning in liver transplantation remains controversial.

Application of nitroglycerin (glyceryl trinitrate) ointment with perianal administration is a widely used treatment for chronic anal fissure. However, headache occurs after application in 20 to 70 patients and leads to withdrawal in 10 of patients.

The aim of this study was to improve the fertilizer‐nitrogen‐use efficiency (NUE) for a sustainable citrus production where yield, fruit quality, and environment are reconciled. A soil pot experiment was conducted using 5‐year‐old orange trees (Citrus sinensiscv. Navel Lane Late) to determine the response of NUE to timing of N‐fertilizer supply. An equal N rate (50 g tree–1) following two seasonal supply distributions was tested: (1) ENS (early supply from March to June of 75% of the N rate, with the remaining 25% administered between July and October) and (2) LNS (late supply of the bulk of the N rate with 25% between March and June and 75% between July and October). Labeled fertilizer (5 atom% 15N excess) was applied in order to accurately quantify N uptake, its partitioning among plant–soil compartments and NUE at the end of fruit drop and at fruit maturity. LNS resulted in a significant increase in NUE in both stages (up to 19% at the end of fruit drop and 9% at fruit maturity), while also increasing summer/autumn flush development. ENS showed lower fruit abscission, an enhanced final fruit load (up to 45%), and a more profuse development of spring flush. It is worth mentioning that LNS led to higher 15N content in the majority of the tree storage organs available for next spring growth resumption. The amount of 15N remaining in the soil of ENS trees at the end of the trial, which represented 16% of the supplied 15N, was 1.5‐fold higher than that of LNS trees as a result of the lower NUE of the former. Irrespective of the seasonal distribution of the fertilizer, mean 15N recovery in the soil–plant system at the end of the trial was about 71%. The results clearly confirm that the N seasonal distribution curve affects NUE in young citrus trees and NUE increases when the bulk of supply of the N rate is delayed to the summer months.

The effects of two rootstocks on tree growth, fruit set and development, yield, CO2assimilation, 13C‐photoassimilates transport, and carbohydrate distribution were investigated. Cleopatra mandarin (CM) (Citrus reshnihort. ex Tanaka) and Forner‐Alcaide 13 (FA‐13) [Citrus reshnihort. ex Tanaka × Poncirus trifoliata(L.) Raf.] rootstocks were used for this study. The first experiment was performed with 2‐yr‐old plants grown under greenhouse conditions. The results showed that leaves from navel orange [Citrus sinensis(L.) Osbeck] grafted onto FA‐13 rootstock (navel onto FA‐13) had higher net CO2assimilation (Aco2) rates than those from navel orange grafted onto CM rootstock (navel onto CM). Also, FA‐13 rootstock induced an increase in leaf transpiration rate with respect to CM rootstock resulting in similar water use efficiency (WUE) values. The higher of photosynthetic activity in navel onto FA‐13 plants resulted in higher photoassimilate transport (13C‐labeled) from leaves to roots compared to navel onto CM plants, causing higher sucrose and starch accumulation in FA‐13 roots. The second experiment was performed under field conditions using 7‐yr‐old trees. Navel orange grafted onto FA‐13, which had the highest Aco2values, displayed higher photoassimilate transport (13C‐labeled) from leaves to developing fruits than those on CM. navel onto FA‐13 leaf sucrose content decreased compared to navel onto CM and leaf concentrations of this sugar were inversely correlated with Aco2values. On the other hand, sucrose and starch concentrations in root bark appeared to be related with fruit sink strength. In conclusion, FA‐13 rootstock enhances photosynthetic rate in navel orange leaves compared to CM and differences in this parameter affected growth and increased yield.
