Purpose: The purpose of this paper is to investigate a fuzzy hybrid approach for ranking the flare gas recovery methods and allocating to refineries. Design/methodology/approach: The proposed approach is containing four stages: in the first stage, experts' assessment is applied to identify relevant criteria and sub-criteria in the evaluation of flare gas recovery methods. In the second stage, the corresponding weights of criteria and sub-criteria are determined via fuzzy decision-making trial and evaluation (DEMATEL)-analytical network process (ANP) (DANP) method. In the third stage, the flare gas recovery methods are ranked using fuzzy weighted aggregated sum product assessment method (WASPAS) multi-criteria decision-making (MADM) technique. In the fourth stage, an optimization model is developed to allocate gas recovery methods to refineries while maximizing the total utility of allocations based on model constraints. Findings: According to the results of fuzzy DANP method, technical and operational criterion was the most important followed by economic, political, managerial and environmental criteria. With respect to sub-criteria, international sanctions and political stability were the most important. The results of fuzzy WASPAS method indicated that gas injection was the first ranked alternative. Finally, the mathematical modeling allocated the recovery methods to five refineries of South Pars gas field in Iran based on budget and time constraints. This paper presents a detailed discussion on the numerical simulation of the underexpanded gas efflux from an outward-opening poppet-valve injector into an engine combustion chamber. In the first part of the paper, the widely studied case of a two-dimensional compressible flow is examined, and the main guidelines for the development of an effective numerical model for compressed natural gas (CNG) direct injection simulation are given, with specific reference to IC engines. The second part of the paper is devoted to the description of the numerical model developed and validated by the authors within the Star-CD environment, which is characterized by the presence of two distinct meshes. The first is built manually and covers the region surrounding the injector exit, whereas the second one covers most of the engine chamber and is built using the Es-ICE tool. A careful grid-independence study has been carried out in both the first and second part of the paper, and the influence of the spatial discretization of the convective fluxes has been discussed as well. The analyses have shown that a resolution of 40 cells in the nozzle height should be adopted to describe the typical phenomena that characterize an underexpanded free jet, unless a second order scheme can be implemented. However, as far as the simulation of the jet penetration time-history and its mixing with the surrounding air is concerned, sufficiently accurate results can also be obtained by using 20 cells per nozzle diameter and the first-order upwind scheme. As for the direct injection engine model, 16 cells across the nozzle lift represent a good compromise between accuracy and reliability of the results and the required computational time. The model has been validated with the support of experimental PLIF images in an optical-access engine, and has shown overall good accuracy and reliability, thus suggesting it is suitable for mixture formation analysis. Abstract: An investigation of a prospective technique to reduce trailing-edge noise is presented. The computational approach based on large-eddy simulations (LES) and solutions of the acoustic perturbation equations (APE) is applied to trailing-edge noise of a flat plate at a freestream Mach number 0.6 and a Reynolds number of 12,000 based on the boundary-layer thickness at the inflow boundary. At two locations, i.e., upstream of and at the trailing edge, gases at different thermodynamic properties, i.e., air, carbon dioxide, and helium, are injected as a silencing fluid into the external flow field. The modified velocity and density fields influence the corresponding acoustic sources. The results include the analysis of turbulent structures, which are responsible for the noise generation and the mechanism defining the noise source. The injection at the trailing edge yields a reduced rate of change of the turbulent scales in the streamwise and spanwise direction defining an acoustically soft trailing edge. For the same mass flow rate of injected fluid the largest noise reduction is achieved by the light fluid, i.e., the helium mixture.
