The 7th Annual Emerging Saddlemakers Preview, featured in the Leather Crafters & Saddlers Journal, attracted five new saddlemakers who were eager to have their saddles reviewed by expert judges. The focus of the event was to provide constructive feedback to those just starting out in the industry. Chelsey Kading won first place with her 14" Olin Young Maker's Leather Supply team roper saddle, followed by Jeremy Daeseleer as the runner-up with his rough-out four-event saddle. Solanezumab is a humanized monoclonal antibody that preferentially binds to soluble amyloid β and promotes its clearance from the brain in preclinical studies. BACKGROUND Magnetization transfer (MT) magnetic resonance imaging (MRI) can provide in vivo quantitative estimates of microscopic tissue damage in normal-appearing white matter (NAWM) and gray matter (GM) from patients with multiple sclerosis (MS). OBJECTIVE To determine whether a onetime MT MRI can provide markers of short-term disease evolution in patients with relapsing-remitting MS. DESIGN Eighteen-month observational study. SETTING Neuroimaging Research Unit, Scientific Institute and University Ospedale San Raffaele. PATIENTS Twenty-two patients with untreated relapsing-remitting MS. MAIN OUTCOME MEASURES Relapse rate; disability according to the Expanded Disability Status Scale (EDSS); dual-echo, 2-dimensional gradient echo with and without a saturation MT pulse and T1-weighted MRIs of the brain; and MT ratio (MTR) histograms for NAWM and GM. RESULTS During the study period, 13 patients (59%) experienced 25 relapses. The median EDSS score was 1.25 (range, 0-3.5) at study entry and 1.75 (range, 0-3) at study exit. Significant, although moderate, correlations were found between average GM MTR values at baseline and EDSS changes during the study period (r = −0.44; P = .04). A trend was observed for the correlation between NAWM MTR values at baseline and the EDSS changes throughout 18 months (r = −0.42; P = .05). For the relation between EDSS changes and baseline GM MTR, the slope of the regression line was −0.5 (95% confidence interval, −1.0 to 0.0), indicating that a decrease in the baseline GM MTR of 1% predicted an increase in the EDSS score of 0.5 point throughout the 18 months. CONCLUSION This study indicates that a “snapshot” MT MRI assessment detects subtle brain tissue changes that are associated with short-term disability accumulation in patients with relapsing-remitting MS.Arch Neurol. 2006;63:736-740 --

Conventional MRI can reveal decreases in brain volumes with aging but fails to provide information about the underlying microstructural modifications. Magnetization transfer (MT) and diffusion tensor (DT) MRI can in part overcome these limitations.

ZnSe-In doped single crystals are obtained by a new vapour phase technique. The as-grown crystals are highly resistive and become n-type conductive after zinc vapour annealing. The evolution of electrical conductivity properties and photoluminescence spectra has been studied as a function of annealing temperature. This evolution has been interpreted in terms of a dissociation of complex deep centers and an exodiffusion of dopant impurities.

A high efficiency optical frequency discriminator/photodetector exhibiting a conversion efficiency exceeding 1 mV/GHz is described. The operating principle consists in monitoring the intracavity optical power change induced by optical FM signals through the voltage change in the phase shifter region of an injection-locked 1.53μm GaInAs/GaInAsP/InP three-section two-contact λ/4-shifted MQW DFB laser. This principle is demonstrated by demodulating FSK signals at 700Mbit/s using neither an interferometer nor an additional photodetector. A receiver sensitivity of −21.9dBm is reported with an NRZ (27-1) PRBS.

The continuous tuning range of a three-section DFB amplifier-filter with a passive centre section can be strongly enhanced by combining the carrier-induced Bragg wavelength shift with the conventional wavelength shift due to the phase shift between the two lateral gain sections. This principle is demonstrated by the fabrication of filters exhibiting a nearly constant gain of 15 dB as well as a 4 GHz filtering bandwidth over a 2.2 nm continuous tuning range.

The authors demonstrate extremely low threshold and high CW output power in 1.55 µm gain coupled DFB lasers. The structure is an MQW strain compensated active layer with first-order grating etched on the upper wells. The lowest thresholds of 2.5 mA at 20°C and 10 mA at 80°C are obtained using one HR facet coating. With an AR front facet, the CW output is increased up to 40 mW, while the threshold current remains < 10 mA.

1.5 μm Fabry-Perot lasers exhibiting extremely low threshold currents have been obtained with a buried ridge stripe (BRS) structure. Threshold currents are 5.7 and 15.5 mA for 300 μm and 1mm cavity lengths, respectively, in CW operation. The optical losses of the buried waveguide have been determined from the external quantum efficiency dependence with cavity length.

We report results of comparative noise measurements on AlGaAs semiconductor laser amplifiers of the Fabry-Perot and travelling-wave types. We show that, for the same net gain, the electrical baseband signal/noise ratio of a photodetector placed at the amplifier output (after an optical filter) is higher for a travelling-wave-type amplifier, especially at high-gain values where the Fabry-Perot amplifier is operated at oscillation threshold. For a net gain of 20.5 dB, the signal/noise ratio of the travelling-wave-type amplifier is 4–5 dB better.
