abstract:Emily Dickinson Wellcome has been called the "essential muse" of her grandson, William Carlos Williams. Paul Mariani, when bestowing this sobriquet, further states that Williams identified her "with nothing less than the deepest promptings of his unconscious self" (8). To look more deeply into Williams's unconscious self and detect Emily's presence, this essay relies on a close reading of three poems—"Dedication for a Plot of Ground," "The Last Words of My English Grandmother," and "An Exultation"—against the psychic structures proposed by Jungian analytical psychology. Emily's adherence to Christian Science alluded to in the poems and referenced in Williams biographies will be demonstrated as a crucial component of the contra-sexual unconscious complex Carl Gustav Jung terms the anima, contrasted against the consciously constructed persona of the medically oriented 'Doctor Williams.'

OverviewThe field of engineering is a major contributor to the economic stability and growth of the UK and other economies. Therefore, the efficient operation of engineering companies and firms is vital. However, design projects undertaken by large engineering organizations are often beset with a number of problems and constraints that stem from the decision-making process and design process that have been selected. This PhD aims to investigate whether the design processes of design thinking and systems engineering can be combined. This would lead to better customer outcomes and reduced time to market, and thus remove the problems often found in large engineering organizations to improve the overall operational efficiency. The overarching research methodology used in this investigation will be action research and is likely to be predominantly qualitative in nature as it has been found that it is very difficult to establish quantitative metrics for design.

Copper (Cu) through-silicon vias (TSV) were thermally cycled using three cycling profiles, which were differentiated by peak cycling temperature. Signal loss in the TSVs escalated with peak cycling temperature for some samples due to the resulting increased void content. This void area increase was attributed to the formation of new voids and not growth of pre-existing voids. The Cu microstructure in the TSVs appeared to be unaffected by the cycling. The Cu was not preferentially oriented and contained a substantial amount of twins.

Since the mid-2000s, several European countries have developed comprehensive counter-radicalisation programs as part of their counter-terrorism strategies, seeking to de-radicalise or disengage committed militants and, with even greater intensity, prevent the radicalisation of new ones. This article describes the genesis, main characteristics, aims, underlying philosophies, and challenges experienced by counter-radicalisation strategies in various European countries. Each country's experience has been deeply shaped by political, cultural, and legal elements unique to each society. Moreover, the programs have been in place for just a few years, and it is therefore difficult to fully assess their impact. Nevertheless, the experience to date points to certain key characteristics and challenges common to all European counter-radicalisation programs which the article seeks to outline and analyse.

The Georgia Department of Transportation (GDOT) investigated possible high permeability in asphalt mixes statewide in response to reports of prolonged wetness on pavements around the state after rainfall. In these locations, high permeability manifested itself as wet areas on pavement surfaces where wetness remained after natural conditions should have removed all moisture from the surfaces. Sixteen project sites were inspected for problem areas statewide, and core specimens were taken from six of the sites. Specimens were taken from areas considered representative of the problem areas in each project. The specimens were tested to determine the permeability, bulk specific gravity, maximum theoretical specific gravity, percentage of air voids, percentage of asphalt cement, and gradation of the mix. According to the findings of this investigation, some Superpaver; mixes that were designed in accordance with GDOT specifications exhibited undesirable permeability. The investigation determined that both mix design and construction contribute to permeable mixes; hence, permeability problems are to be corrected by a balanced adjustment to these processes, according to the following recommendations: (a) for each Superpave mix type used in Georgia, develop mix-specific acceptance criteria for maximum in-place air voids; (b) include evaluation of mix permeability in mix design; and (c) provide continued quality control during construction operations to ensure the success of the mix-specific acceptance criteria.

Resonances due to the bridging phosphido groups occur at very high field (−267 to −322 ppm upfield of P(OCH3)3), in strong contrast to literature reports of phosphido bridges in palladium cluster complexes where the bridged metal atoms are linked by a metal–metal bond and the bridging phosphorus occurs +57 to +82 ppm downfield of P(OCH3)3.
