Zinc (Zn) is the micronutrient commonly found deficient in agricultural soils worldwide, limiting crop yield and reducing food quality. Zinc‐enriched fertilizers have been successfully used to tackle crop Zn deficiency. However, Zn solubility is reduced after addition to phosphate fertilizers due to the formation of sparingly soluble precipitates, decreasing Zn availability to crops. We hypothesized that the availability of Zn in the fertilizer to plants is related to its speciation in the fertilizer. We evaluated a range of ammonium phosphate fertilizers using X‐ray absorption near‐edge structure and assessed the water‐solubility of Zn in the formulations. Four Zn species were identified in these fertilizers, with zinc ammonium phosphate the most abundant one. The speciation of Zn in the fertilizer had little relationship with the water solubility of Zn in the final product. Zinc solubility was driven by fertilizer pH, with lower pH resulting in higher solubility. We concluded that added Zn reacts with the fertilizer matrix to form mainly zinc (ammonium) phosphates, and when the fertilizer is dissolved in water, hopeite controls the solubility. Based on these findings, we tested whether a barrier coating between the P granule and the Zn compound could prevent reaction between Zn and P and thus enhance Zn availability. Indeed, higher Zn uptake was observed in an isotopically labeled fertilizer growth trial when a barrier coating physically separated Zn and P in the fertilizer. In summary, Zn availability to crops can be maximized by decreasing fertilizer pH and separating P and Zn in the granule. Water‐soluble Zn content affects the effectiveness of Zn fertilizers.Zn speciation is not a reliable predictor of fertilizer Zn solubility.Zn water solubility is maximized by decreasing granule pH.A coated barrier between the P matrix and Zn coating improved plant Zn uptake.

Policies encouraging extended workforce participation mainly focus on financial motives, but socioemotional selectivity theory and research suggest that mature worker motives are multifaceted, with emotionally meaningful goals gaining importance with age. We adopt a person-centred approach using latent class analysis of survey data from 1501 Australian workers aged 45?years and over. Two motivational profiles based on patterns of motives were identified, which we term income-dominant (income is the main reason) and socioemotional-income (socioemotional reasons are dominant, but income is important too). Contrary to expectations, we found no evidence of a socioemotional-dominant profile. This provides new theoretical insights, as it suggests that even though socioemotional reasons may increase in importance with age, financial reasons remain important to most mature workers, especially those who may view work as being transactional. Being female, older, and having higher socioeconomic status and age-inclusive HR policies increase the odds of having a socioemotional-income rather than income-dominant profile. The socioemotional-income subgroup had lower turnover intentions and later desired retirement ages than the income-dominant subgroup, highlighting the potential for more socioemotionally focused policies and practices to encourage extended workforce participation.JEL Classification: J26, M12, M54

Climate change has increased drought frequency and duration that are exacerbated by increased temperatures globally. This effect has, and will continue, to increase fire occurrence across many regions of North America. In the southern Appalachian Mountains, wildfires with high burn severity occurred in 2016 due to increased drought and human activity. To investigate the effects of burn severity on soil physicochemical properties, microbial extracellular enzyme production, and microbial abundances in a temperate region, surface soils (0–15 cm) were collected from two sites (the Great Smoky Mountains National Park in Tennessee and the Nantahala National Forest in North Carolina, USA) spanning lightly, moderately, and severely burned areas, accompanied by adjacent unburned locations that act as controls. The soil samples were collected at three time points between 2017 and 2019 (i.e., 0.5, 1, and 2.5 years post-fire) among burn severity plots. Total hydrolytic enzyme production varied over time, with severe burn plots having significantly lower enzyme production at 2.5 years post-fire. Individual enzymes varied among burn severities and across time post-fire. Light burn plots showed greater carbon-specific (β-glucosidase and β-xylosidase) and phosphorus-specific (acid phosphatase) enzyme activities at 0.5 years post-fire, but this effect was transient. At 2.5 years post-fire, the β-xylosidase and acid phosphatase activities were lower in severe or moderate burn plots relative to the controls. In contrast, the activity of nitrogen-specific enzyme leucyl aminopeptidase was the lowest in severe burn plots at 0.5 years post-fire, but was the lowest in light burn plots at 2.5 years post-fire. The fungi:bacteria ratio declined with burn severity, indicating that fungi are sensitive or less resilient to high burn severity during recovery. These results suggest that wildfires alter trajectories for soil microbial structure and function within a 2.5-year timeframe, which potentially has long-term impacts on biogeochemical cycling.

Galaxies appear to not rotate because their rotation is extremely slow, taking hundreds of millions of years to complete one rotation. This slow rotation makes it difficult for humans to perceive the motion. The accumulation of the 8-kb oncogenic long noncoding MALAT1 RNA in cells is dependent on the presence of a protective triple helix structure at the 3′ terminus. While recent studies have examined the functional importance of numerous base triples within the triplex and its immediately adjacent base pairs, the functional importance of peripheral duplex elements has not been thoroughly investigated. To investigate the functional importance of a peripheral linker region that was previously described as unstructured, we employed a variety of assays including thermal melting, protection from exonucleolytic degradation by RNase R, small-angle X-ray scattering, biochemical ligation and binding assays, and computational modeling. Our results demonstrate the presence of a duplex within this linker that enhances the functional stability of the triplex in vitro, despite its location more than 40 Å from the 3′ terminus. We present a full-length model of the MALAT1 triple helix-containing RNA having an extended rod-like structure and comprising 33 layers of coaxial stacking interactions. Taken together with recent research on a homologous triplex, our results demonstrate that peripheral elements anchor and stabilize triplexes in vitro. Such peripheral elements may also contribute to the formation and stability of some triple helices in vivo.

Over the past decade, a variety of digital platforms have emerged to deliver core correctional services. Understanding the challenges and drivers of correctional agencies’ digitalisation helps us to understand the processes that shape these technologies and their impact on correctional environments and practices. To bridge this gap, we conducted interviews with 26 software developers and other stakeholders involved in the digitalisation of corrections, aiming to explore the challenges encountered in designing and implementing digital service delivery technologies for correctional services. Our findings shed light on some key challenges faced by software developers and other stakeholders involved in the design process, including institutional culture, justice system bureaucracy, and public perceptions. These challenges significantly influence design processes and the availability of digital products for end users. They shape the techno-social landscape of correctional agencies and contribute to the dominance or absence of certain digital platforms or artefacts.
