Aim. To describe the general aspects of cavernomas and epilepsy and review the available literature on the utility of electrocorticography (ECoG) in cerebral cavernoma surgery. Methods. We searched studies in PubMed, MedLine, Scopus, Web of Science, and Google Scholar (from January 1969 to December 2013) using the keywords “electrocorticography” or “ECoG” or “prognosis” or “outcome” and “cavernomas”. Original articles that reported utility of ECoG in epilepsy surgery were included. Four review authors independently selected the studies, extracted data, and assessed the methodological quality of the studies using the recommendations of the Cochrane Handbook for Systematic Reviews of Interventions, PRISMA guidelines, and Jadad Scale. A meta‐analysis was not possible due to methodological, clinical, and statistical heterogeneity of included studies. We analysed six articles with a total of 219 patients. Results. The most common surgical approach was lesionectomy using ECoG in the temporal lobe with Engel I outcome range from 72.7 to 100%. Conclusions. Small controlled studies suggest that ECoG‐guided resection offers the best functional results in seizure control for subjects undergoing cavernoma surgery, especially in the temporal lobe.

AbstractObjective:To characterize the burden of idiopathic painful peripheral neuropathy with small fiber involvement (idiopathic SFN) by pain severity in the US.Methods:One hundred previously diagnosed idiopathic SFN subjects were enrolled during routine office visits. Subjects completed a one-time questionnaire, and investigators reported clinical characteristics and healthcare resource use, based on 6 month retrospective chart review. Annualized direct and indirect costs were estimated. Results were stratified across pain severity groups.Results:Mean age was 63.5 years; 53.0 were female; 76.0 had moderate or severe pain. Most common comorbidities were sleep disturbance/insomnia (37.0), anxiety (34.0), and depressive symptoms (33.0). Overall mean health status (0.59; −0.11–1.00 scale), physical and mental health (31.7 and 45.6, respectively, 0–100 scale), sleep index (45.1; 0–100 scale), and pain interference with function (5.0; 0–10 scale) differed by pain severity, with worse outcomes among those with greater pain (all p < 0.002). 84.0 were prescribed 1 SFN medication. 16.0 were employed; mean overall work impairment was 36.9. Annualized average adjusted direct and indirect costs per subject (8055 and 13,733, respectively) differed by pain severity.Conclusions:Idiopathic SFN subjects with pain experience moderate or severe pain, which negatively impacts health status, function, and productivity, and leads to substantial direct and indirect costs.

ABSTRACTAdenovirus infection and expression of E1A induces both proliferation and apoptosis, the latter of which is blocked by the adenovirus Bcl-2 homologue E1B 19K. The mechanism of apoptosis induction and the role that it plays in productive infection are not known. Unlike apoptosis mediated by death receptors, infection with proapoptotic E1B 19K mutant viruses did not induce cleavage of Bid but nonetheless induced changes in Bak and Bax conformation, Bak-Bax interaction, caspase 9 and 3 activation, and apoptosis. In wild-type-adenovirus-infected cells, in which E1B 19K inhibits apoptosis, E1B 19K was bound to Bak, precluding Bak-Bax interaction and changes in Bax conformation. Infection with E1B 19K mutant viruses induced apoptosis in wild-type and Bax- or Bak-deficient baby mouse kidney cells but not in those deficient for both Bax and Bak. Furthermore, Bax and Bak deficiency dramatically increased E1A expression and virus replication. Thus, Bax- and Bak-mediated apoptosis severely limits adenoviral replication, demonstrating that Bax and Bak function as an antiviral response at the cellular level.

We have used an extreme environmental stress test to study the adhesion of a thin sputtered copper film (0.5 μm) to flexible polyimide (PI) substrates between 25 and 125 μm thick. The polyimide types include Kapton (PMDA-ODA) and Upilex (BPDA-PDA). When there was no surface modification on the PI, the adhesion of the film to Upilex type S was better than the adhesion to Upilex type R or Kapton type HN. When the polymer surface was treated with a simple AC nitrogen glow discharge (NGD), there was an improvement in the adhesion of the film to each of these polyimides. This improvement in adhesion became apparent after the film/substrate combination was subjected to either boiling water or steam for 30 min or more; the difference became quite clear after 2 h. A simple tape test was used to quickly estimate a relative adhesion strength. In order to compare the effect of our AC NGD treatment with other substrate surface modification methods, we used it to improve the coupling of a thick (> 10 μm) layer of copper (via a thin intermediate chromium layer) to a rigid PI substrate, formed from spin coating its precursor onto a silicon wafer. Peel test results were within a factor of 2-3 of the corresponding results obtained with a radio frequency (RF) plasma and ion beam treatments.

The selection of glass, the methods of handling glass containers, the methods and machines for washing the containers, and the sterilization process are important areas of concern. Suggestions for standard procedures and specifications are presented.

We have studied the adhesion-promoting layer of a composite interface consisting of alumina, 3-aminopropyltriethoxysilane (APS), and polyimide (PI) reactants. The aminosilane appears to exist as a submonolayer and is 15N isotope-enriched, which renders it 'visible' to solid-state 15N-NMR detection. The interactions of the APS nitrogen with four different PI reactants including two amic acids, an amic ester, and an isoimide are investigated: (1) at room temperature, (2) during thermal curing up to temperatures of 300-400 °C, (3) after typical hydrothermal stress, and (4) after a post-temperature and humidity (T&H) bake. Conclusions about the chemical reactivity of the APS are drawn from interpretation of the 15N-NMR spectra. These experiments offer direct evidence of chemical reactions in an area where little direct evidence is available. The surface-bonded APS is shown to have different reactivities toward different kinds of PI reactant at low temperatures, with the isoimide being the most reactive. At higher temperatures, the reactivities are observed to be similar. Thermal treatment shows the formation of PI/APS aryl/alkyl imide bonds. Hydrothermal stress shows degradation of the PI/APS imide bonds via a two-step mechanism. However, a post-T&H bake at an elevated temperature appears to substantially heal the T&H degradation.

A study of tableting tool life records, accumulated over a period of 8years, has served to develop and define relationships between tool performance and the many operating variables that exist in routine tablet production. The effects of these numerous factors on punch and die life have led to conclusions involving techniques for extending tool usability. Outstanding among these are narrowing of working tolerances for tools and extension of product runs on individual machines rather than frequent interchange of machine and tools.

Isolation of a soluble resistance-enhancing factor from Mycobacterium phlei. J. Bacteriol. 92:285–290. 1966.—Extraction of a crude cell wall preparation from Mycobacterium phleiwith 20% urea yielded a fraction which induced a state of enhanced resistance to microbial challenge. The resulting soluble extract, after removal of the urea, represented a 15% yield of solids with the separation of the biologically active component(s) and elimination of toxicity. Single oral or subcutaneous submicrogram doses of this material induced a prolonged state of increased resistance to subsequent challenge with Salmonella enteritidisin mice. This effect appeared as early as 2 hr after oral administration and persisted for at least 30 days. Protection against experimental infection with Staphylococcus aureuswas also demonstrated. Resistance to viral challenge with influenza type A was observed after intranasal administration of the M. phleiextract to mice. The isolated material was found to contain carbohydrate, protein, nucleic acids, and lipids. The lipids represented 60% of the total solids, and were all short-chain fatty acids. No toxic effects, including pyrogenicity, could be demonstrated after oral or parenteral administration of this preparation.

Effective thermal management of traction-drive power electronics is critical to the advancement of electric-drive vehicles and is necessary for increasing power density and improving reliability. Replacing traditional silicon devices with more efficient, higher temperature, higher voltage, and higher frequency wide-bandgap (WBG) devices will enable increased power density but will result in higher device heat fluxes. Compact packaging of high-temperature WBG devices near low-temperature-rated components creates thermal management challenges that need to be addressed for future power-dense systems. This paper summarizes the thermal performance of on-road automotive power electronics thermal management systems and provides thermal performance and pumping-power metrics for select vehicles. Thermal analyses reveal that the package/conduction resistance dominates the total thermal resistance (for existing automotive systems). We model advanced packaging concepts and compare the results with existing packaging designs to quantify their thermal performance enhancements. Double-side-cooled configurations that do not use thermal interface materials are package concepts predicted to provide a low junction-to-fluid thermal resistance (compared to current packages). Dielectric-fluid-cooled concepts enable a redesign of the package to reduce the package resistance, can be implemented in single- and two-phase cooling approaches, and allow for cooling of passive components (e.g., capacitors) and bus bars.
