1. Habitat Suitability Modelling of White-Bellied Pangolin (Phataginus tricuspis) in Oluwa Forest Reserve, Ondo State, Nigeria

Abstract: Most endangered species face a significant threat from habitat loss. The destruction and degradation of natural tropical forest across West Africa has likely been the biggest threat to White-bellied Pangolin and has contributed to their decline as they depend on the habitat for different resources like food, water, and shelter. The current study investigated the habitat suitability of white-bellied pangolins in Oluwa Forest Reserve. The presence data of White-bellied pangolin was collected by taking the Global Positioning System (GPS) coordinates of the indirect signs observed. These data, along with the 19 bioclimatic variables, slopes, soil PH, soil texture, distance to rivers, distance to roads, and Normalized Difference Vegetation Index (NDVI), were used to generate habitat suitability maps using MaxEnt software. The MaxEnt analysis showed that out of 781 km2available for White bellied Pangolin during dry season, 338 km2was highly suitable, 209 km2was suitable, 126 km2was moderately suitable, 65 km2was less suitable and 44 km2was not suitable. During the wet season 235 km2was highly suitable, 225 km2was suitable, 164 km2was moderately suitable, 100 km2was less suitable and 57 km2was not suitable habitat. The jackknife test of variable contribution revealed that during the dry season, NDVI was the most important predictor variable as measured by the gain produced by a one-variable model, followed by aspects such as distance to the river, slope, distance to the road, and temperature seasonality. During the wet season, the jackknife-cross-validation test showed the highest gain when NDVI was used in isolation. Aspects were found to be the second most important predictor variable as measured by the gain produced by a one-variable model, followed by distance to the road, slope, elevation, and the mean temperature of the wettest quarter.

Abstract: Type 2 diabetes mellitus is a major risk factor for hepatocellular carcinoma (HCC). Changes in extracellular matrix (ECM) mechanics contribute to cancer development1,2, and increased stiffness is known to promote HCC progression in cirrhotic conditions3,4. Type 2 diabetes mellitus is characterized by an accumulation of advanced glycation end-products (AGEs) in the ECM; however, how this affects HCC in non-cirrhotic conditions is unclear. Here we find that, in patients and animal models, AGEs promote changes in collagen architecture and enhance ECM viscoelasticity, with greater viscous dissipation and faster stress relaxation, but not changes in stiffness. High AGEs and viscoelasticity combined with oncogenic β-catenin signalling promote HCC induction, whereas inhibiting AGE production, reconstituting the AGE clearance receptor AGER1 or breaking AGE-mediated collagen cross-links reduces viscoelasticity and HCC growth. Matrix analysis and computational modelling demonstrate that lower interconnectivity of AGE-bundled collagen matrix, marked by shorter fibre length and greater heterogeneity, enhances viscoelasticity. Mechanistically, animal studies and 3D cell cultures show that enhanced viscoelasticity promotes HCC cell proliferation and invasion through an integrin-β1–tensin-1–YAP mechanotransductive pathway. These results reveal that AGE-mediated structural changes enhance ECM viscoelasticity, and that viscoelasticity can promote cancer progression in vivo, independent of stiffness.

4. Exploring the Determinants of Child Mortality in Nigeria: Insights from Multiple Econometric Techniques

Abstract: Over the past several years, global infant and under-five mortality rates have decreased significantly, with advanced economies experiencing single-digit mortality rates. However, Nigeria continues to grapple with rising infant mortality rates, which remain the highest in sub-Saharan Africa. The present study offers new perspectives on the determinants of child mortality in a developing country, Nigeria, from 1980 to 2021. The study analyses the child mortality determinants by deploying different econometric strategies: autoregressive distributed lag (ARDL), fully modified ordinary least squares (FMOLS), dynamic ordinary least squares (DOLS), and canonical cointegration regression (CCR) procedures. The empirical outcomes indicate that the increasing child mortality rate in Nigeria is driven by rising fertility rates among women. While improvements in educational attainment for females, immunization vaccines, nutrition, and economic growth are critical for reducing child mortality in Nigeria. The estimated outcomes of the ARDL technique were robust to the alternative estimation techniques employed in this study. This study offers important implications for policymakers in Nigeria regarding the design and formulation of sustainable universal health policies.

5. Impact of smoking intensity and device cleaning on IQOS emissions: comparison with an array of cigarettes

Abstract: SignificanceIQOS is a heated tobacco product that has been widely advertised by Philip Morris International (PMI) as a reduced-exposure product compared with cigarettes. Reduced exposure results from reduced emission of toxicants which could be influenced by product constituents and user behaviour. This study aims to assess the influence of user behaviour, including device cleaning and puffing parameters, on toxicant emissions from IQOS.MethodsIQOS aerosols were generated by a smoking machine using the combination of two cleaning protocols (after 1 stick vs 20 sticks) and five puffing regimes (including standard cigarette puffing regimes and IQOS-tailored regimes). The generated aerosols were analysed by targeted methods for phenol and carbonyl quantification, and by chemical screening for the identification of unknown compounds.ResultsPuffing parameters significantly affected phenol and carbonyl emissions while device cleaning had no effect. Harsher puffing conditions like more, longer, and larger puffs yielded higher levels for most toxicant emissions. Comparing the obtained data with data reported by PMI on 50 cigarette brands smoked under different puffing regimes showed various trends for phenol and carbonyl emissions, with IQOS emissions sometimes higher than cigarettes. Also, the chemical screening resulted in the tentative identification of ~100 compounds in the IQOS aerosols (most of limited toxicity data).ConclusionThis study showed that puffing parameters, but not device cleaning, have significant effects on carbonyl, phenol and other emissions. Data analysis highlighted the importance of comparing IQOS emissions with an array of commercial cigarettes tested under different puffing regimes before accepting reduced exposure claims.

6. Diagnostic value of rapid test for malaria among febrile neonates in a tertiary hospital in North-East Nigeria: a prospective cross-sectional study

Abstract: ObjectiveThe WHO recommends testing using microscopy or rapid diagnostic test (RDT) before treatment for malaria. However, the use of RDT to diagnose neonatal malaria has not been widely validated with most studies limited to the first week of life. Thus, we conducted this study to determine the utility of RDT in the diagnosis of congenital and acquired malaria in febrile neonates in Nigeria.DesignThis prospective cross-sectional descriptive study consecutively recruited 131 febrile neonates at the Special Care Baby Unit (SCBU) of the Federal Teaching Hospital Gombe, Nigeria. All study participants concurrently had RDT (HRP2, LDH) and malaria microscopy. The performance of both methods was then compared.ResultSeventy-eight of 131 neonates tested for malaria by blood smear microscopy demonstrated malaria parasites; a prevalence of 59.5%. Parasite count ranged from 16 to 520 /μL and the median parasite count was 81.0 /μL with IQR (40.0–134.5). The majority of patients (93.5%) had low-density parasitaemia (≤2+). All species identified were Plasmodium falciparum. None of the 131 neonates tested positive on RDT. The sensitivity and positive predictive value of RDT for neonatal malaria was zero. Congenital malaria was the most common form of neonatal malaria, accounting for 75.6%, while acquired and transfusion-related malaria were estimated at 12.8% and 11.6%, respectively.ConclusionThe RDT used in this study was not sensitive in the diagnosis of congenital or acquired neonatal malaria; therefore, microscopy remains the preferred method of diagnosis of neonatal malaria.

7. Quantitative Structure–Activity Relationship Model, Molecular Docking Simulation and Computational Design of Some Novel Compounds Against DNA Gyrase Receptor

Abstract: Time consumed and expenses in discovering and synthesizing new hypothetical drugs with improved biological activity have been a major challenge toward the treatment of multi-drug resistance strain Mycobacterium tuberculosis(TB). To solve the above problem, Quantitative structure activity relationship (QSAR) is a recent approach developed to discover a novel drug with a better biological against M. Tuberculosis. A validated QSAR model developed in this study to predict the biological activities of some anti-tubercular compounds and to design new hypothetical drugs is influenced with the molecular descriptors; MATS2s, nHBint3, maxtsC, TDB9u, RDF90i and RDF110s. Molecular docking studies was as well carried for all the studied compounds in order to show the interactions and binding modes between the ligand and the receptor (DNA gyrase). The lead compound (compound 41) with higher anti-tubercular activity was observed with prominent binding affinity of − 21.9 kcal/mol compared to the recommended drugs; Isoniazid (− 14.6 kcal/mol). Therefore, compound 41 served as a template structure to designed compounds with more efficient activities. Among the compounds designed; compounds 41p was observed with better anti-tubercular activities with more prominent binding affinities of − 24.3 kcal/mol. The findings in the research will be valued to pharmacology, medicinal chemists and pharmacist to design and synthesis a novel drug candidate against the tuberculosis. Moreover, in vitro and in vivo test could be carried out to validate the computational results.

Abstract: The need for organisations to constantly create learning culture and adapt to change that will enable the employees have the opportunities to develop new skills have become worrisome. This has made firms, especially the professional firms to be faced with challenges of learning culture complexities. Therefore, this study assessed the role of learning culture on innovation performance of the selected professional firms in Nigeria. This study was descriptive in nature. The study adopted a mixed method to get information from 328 employees among the professional firms that were conveniently and purposively selected. The use of questionnaire was adopted. The quantitative data were analysed using structural equation modelling (SEM) to obtain result. The findings indicated that the selected professional firms applied new learning in their jobs. Based on the above, the selected firms should have opportunities to apply new learning in order to keep up with changes within the organisation.

Abstract: For patients with heart failure, reduced left ventricular ejection fraction and iron deficiency, intravenous ferric carboxymaltose administration improves quality of life and exercise capacity in the short-term and reduces hospital admissions for heart failure up to 1 year. We aimed to evaluate the longer-term effects of intravenous ferric derisomaltose on cardiovascular events in patients with heart failure.

10. Enhancing Patient Transport Systems in the U.S. Department of Defense’s National Disaster Medical System (NDMS) Pilot Program

Abstract: AbstractObjectiveCongress directed the Secretary of Defense (DoD) to conduct a Pilot program to increase the National Disaster Medical System’s (NDMS) surge capacity, capabilities, and interoperability to support patient movement during a large-scale overseas contingency operation.MethodsThe Pilot conducted a mixed methods exploratory study, the Military-Civilian NDMS Interoperability Study (MCNIS), identifying 55 areas of solutions for NDMS innovation that align with interagency stakeholder interests. Priorities were determined via facilitated discussions, refined and validated by all five Pilot sites.ResultsAs the DoD provides essential support for the patient movement component within NDMS, the results highlighted areas for improvement between receiving patients at an airfield and moving them to NDMS definitive care partners during a large medical surge event. This includes patient tracking capabilities, transportation processes and patient placement.ConclusionsIn collaboration with the Departments of Health & Human Services, Homeland Security, Transportation, and Veterans Health Administration, the Pilot is addressing these areas for improvement, by executing site-specific projects that will be validated and identified for export across the system. Leaders across the Pilot site healthcare networks are working to enhance patient movement and tracking. Ultimately, the Pilot will deliver dozens of proven solutions to enhance the NDMS’s patient movement capabilities.

Abstract: Brown blotch disease, caused by Colletotrichum truncatum(Schew), is one of the most destructive diseases affecting cowpea [Vigna unguiculata(L.) Walp.] in the humid agro‐ecologies of southwestern Nigeria. Development of resistant or tolerant cowpea cultivars was identified as the most economical and effective means of addressing the threat of this disease. Two improved cowpea cultivars, ‘ARTPEA/BBT/72/B’ (Reg. no. CV‐347, PI 700856; also known as Remilekun) and ‘ARTPEA/BBT/22/W’ (Reg. no. CV‐346, PI 700855; also known as Boluyo) (National Code numbers NGVU‐22‐41 and NGVU‐22‐42), were developed through the pedigree breeding method from reciprocal crosses between IT‐95K‐193‐12 and ‘Ife‐Brown’ and released by the Institute of Agricultural Research and Training, Obafemi Awolowo University, Moor Plantation, Ibadan, Nigeria, in 2022. They were bred for early maturity, high yield, and enhanced tolerance to brown blotch disease in the humid agro‐ecologies of southwestern Nigeria. ARTPEA/BBT/72/B and ARTPEA/BBT/22/W along with their parents and other breeding lines were evaluated in 10 locations for 2 yr on 16 farmers’ fields between 2020 and 2021. ARTPEA/BBT/72/B (Remilekun) and ARTPEA/BBT/22/W (Boluyo) are tolerant to brown blotch disease, early maturing (60–75 d), high yielding (1–1.2 t/ha), non‐photoperiod sensitive, and adaptable to Nigeria's humid agro‐ecologies. They can be cultivated twice a year for enhanced cowpea production in Nigeria. Brown blotch disease is one of the most destructive diseases affecting cowpea in humid regions of Nigeria.Developing disease‐tolerant cowpea cultivars is the most economical and effective means of mitigating this disease.Two cowpea cultivars, ARTPEA/BBT/72/B and ARTPEA/BBT/22/W, tolerant to brown blotch disease were developed through pedigree breeding method.

16. The National Disaster Medical System and military combat readiness: A scoping review

Abstract: The National Disaster Medical System (NDMS) was designed to provide critical health care after natural disasters or a major overseas war. Created in the 1980s. Never fully tested. Will it actually work? #NDMS #DefinitiveCare #Disaster #HospitalPreparednessA scoping review was conducted to describe the history of the National Disaster Medical System (NDMS) in the context of US military medical preparedness for a large-scale overseas military conflict. National Disaster Medical System civilian hospitals would serve as backups to military treatment facilities if both US Department of Defense and US Department of Veterans Affairs hospitals reached capacity during such a conflict. Systematic searches were used to identify published works discussing the NDMS in the scientific and gray literature. Results were limited to publicly available unclassified English language works from 1978 to January 2022; no other restrictions were placed on the types of published works. Full-text reviews were conducted on identified works (except student papers and dissertations) to determine the extent to which they addressed NDMS definitive care. Data charting was performed on a final set of papers to assess how these works addressed NDMS definitive care. The search identified 54 works published between 1984 and 2022. More than half of the publications were simple descriptions of the NDMS (n = 30 [56%]), and most were published in academic or professional journals (n = 38 [70%]). Only nine constituted original research. There were recurrent criticisms of and recommendations for improving the definitive care component of the NDMS. The lack of published literature on NDMS definitive care supports the assertion that the present-day NDMS may lack the capacity and military-civilian interoperability necessary to manage the casualties resulting from a large-scale overseas military conflict.

17. Clinical factors associated with bone mineral density among individuals with osteoarthritis of the hip and/or knee: a systematic review

Abstract: Background and objective: The association of clinical factors of osteoarthritis (OA) with bone mineral density (BMD) is not well understood. We aimed to synthesize evidence regarding the associated clinical factors for low BMD in people with knee and/or hip osteoarthritis. Methods: A systematic literature search limited to human studies was conducted from inception to September 12, 2022. CINAHL, Cochrane, Medline, PsycINFO, PubMed, Web of Science, and African Journal online databases were searched for all clinical factors associated with low BMD (either as osteopenia or osteoporosis). Gray literature or abstracts or protocols, studies with a mixed population of OA without a subgroup analysis for hip and or KOA and non-English were excluded. Following the title and abstract, full-text, screenings, and data extraction, data from eligible studies were synthesized based on the main objective of the study. The Joanna Brigg’s Institute (JBI) Critical Assessment tool was used for quality appraisal. Narrative synthesis and best evidence synthesis were used in the study. Result: Five studies (2 case–control, 3 cross-sectional) were included after screening 3355 titles and abstracts. Clinical factors reported in the five studies included: body mass index (BMI); pain, function, and stiffness; symptom duration; presence of varus/valgus deformity; quality of life; and knee function. Whilst there was limited evidence to support the association between BMD measured at any site of the body and BMI, as well as conflicting evidence for the association of BMD with age and gender, there was insufficient evidence to support the association of BMD with other identified clinical factors of hip and or/ knee OA (p< 0.05). In addition, there is conflicting evidence for the association between BMD measured at the lumbar spine and BMI. Conclusion: There is insufficient evidence on the association between BMD and its associated clinical factors. With the attendant likelihood of bias in existing studies, there is a need for well-designed studies on bone health in OA.

18. Computer-aided modeling of triazole analogues, docking studies of the compounds on DNA gyrase enzyme and design of new hypothetical compounds with efficient activities

Abstract: AbstractThe increasing problem of multi-drug resistant-tuberculosis has focused attention on developing new drugs that are not only active against drug-resistant tuberculosis, but also shorten the lengthy therapy. Therefore, this work employs the application of modeling technique to predict the inhibition activities of some prominent compounds which been reported to be efficient against Mycobacterium tuberculosis. To accomplish the purpose of this work, multiple regression and genetic function approximation were adopted to create the model. The established model was swayed with topological descriptors; MATS7s, SpMin4_Bhv, TDB3v and RDF70v. More also, interactions between the compounds and the target protein ‘DNA gyrase’ were evaluated viamolecular docking approach utilizing the PyRx and discovery studio simulation software. Based on the docking analysis, compound 20has the most noticeable binding affinity of −16.5 kcal/mol. Therefore, compound 20served as a reference structural template and insight to design fourteen novel hypothetical agents with more prominent anti-tubercular activities. More also, compound 20jwas observed with the highest activity among the designed compounds with a prominent binding affinity of −24.3 kcal/mol. Therefore, this research recommends in-vivo, in-vitroscreening and pharmacokinetic properties to be carried out in order to determine the toxicity of the designed compounds.Communicated by Ramaswamy H. Abstract: COVID-19 is a multisystem disease and patients who survive might have in-hospital complications. These complications are likely to have important short-term and long-term consequences for patients, health-care utilisation, health-care system preparedness, and society amidst the ongoing COVID-19 pandemic. Our aim was to characterise the extent and effect of COVID-19 complications, particularly in those who survive, using the International Severe Acute Respiratory and Emerging Infections Consortium WHO Clinical Characterisation Protocol UK.

Abstract: Studies of patients admitted to hospital with COVID-19 have found varying mortality outcomes associated with underlying respiratory conditions and inhaled corticosteroid use. Using data from a national, multicentre, prospective cohort, we aimed to characterise people with COVID-19 admitted to hospital with underlying respiratory disease, assess the level of care received, measure in-hospital mortality, and examine the effect of inhaled corticosteroid use.

24. Petroleum Pump Price Swing and Consumer Price Index Nexus in Nigeria: New Evidence from NARDL

Abstract: The study analyses the role of the petroleum pump price on the consumer price index in Nigeria, using the Nonlinear Autoregressive distributive lag method was used to estimate the time-series data, spanning from 1980 to 2020. The study reveals a long-run equilibrium was found between the consumer price index and petroleum pump price measures. The empirical results obtained revealed an asymmetric relationship between the petroleum pump price and the consumer price index in Nigeria. The study recommended that the policymakers should transparently commit resources into rehabilitation and maintenance of domestic refineries to enhance their functionality and as well reduce importation cost to curtail frequent petroleum pump price adjustment that spiral domestic inflation.

25. Mathematical analysis and simulation of Ebola virus disease spread incorporating mitigation measures

Abstract: In order to understand the dynamics of the Ebola virus disease (EVD), this research developed a mathematical model that includes quarantine and public education campaigns as control measures. The model’s equilibrium points are displayed and the effective basic reproduction number Reffis estimated. Bifurcation theory is used for the stability analysis of endemic equilibrium state and general bifurcation theory is used to prove the existence of endemic equilibrium state. We evaluated the nature of the endemic equilibrium state of the model’s equation near the disease-free equilibrium, Reff=1and introduce a bifurcation parameter. The results of the centre manifold theory are used to demonstrate that there is nontrivial endemic equilibrium near the disease-free equilibrium. We demonstrated the characteristics of the endemic equilibrium state that is close to the disease-free equilibrium as well as the fact that there is a potentially unstable endemic equilibrium condition. In other words, the sickness is slowly declining and will eventually disappear, as in the case of West Africa. Finally, we simulated the model developed to study the dynamics of the diseases with varying parameters using Homotopy Perturbation Method (HPM) to validate the qualitative analysis of the model. The result confirmed the hypothesis of our research that if quarantine and public enlightenment is properly used for the mitigation of the disease, the disease outcomes will drastically reduced. The results presented in this research will be useful for public health experts to contain the Ebola disease spread most especially in Africa.

29. Occurrence and distribution of pharmaceuticals in surface water and sediment of Buffalo and Sundays River estuaries, South Africa and their ecological risk assessment

Abstract: This study investigated the presence of pharmaceuticals in the water and sediment of Buffalo and Sundays River Estuary, South Africa. Extraction for water and sediment samples was achieved with solid-phase extraction and ultrasonic extraction methods, respectively. Quantification of the target analytes was done with UPLC-QTOF-MS. The pH of surface water in all the sampling sites (8.18–10.1) were above the WHO guideline (6.5). A good correlation was observed between the concentrations of analytes with organic matter and organic carbon. Results showed that carbamazepine exhibited the highest concentration (8.75 ± 1.45 μg/kg) of all the pharmaceuticals, while trimethoprim has the highest detection frequency with the highest concentration of 1.62 ± 0.83 μg/kg in the sediment samples. Sulfamethoxazole was below the detection limit in both estuaries. Calculated risk quotients revealed that carbamazepine and trimethoprim could be of potential risk, while caffeine may pose a very low risk to the aquatic organisms investigated. Proper monitoring of the runoff entering Buffalo Estuary is required, being the point of discharge of Buffalo River to the Indian Ocean. Also, the domestic waste discharge from residences in the surroundings of Sundays Estuary should be monitored.

Abstract: Patients living with HIV in malarial endemic regions may experience clinically significant drug interaction between antiretroviral and antimalarial drugs. Effects of nevirapine (NVP), efavirenz (EFV) and lopinavir/ritonavir (LPVr) on lumefantrine (LM) therapeutic concentrations and toxicity were evaluated. In a four-arm parallel study design, the blood samples of 40 participants, treated with artemether/lumefantrine (AL), were analysed. Lumefantrine Cmax was increased by 32% (p = 0.012) and 325% (p < 0.0001) in the NVP and LPVr arms respectively but decreased by 62% (p < 0.0001) in the EFV-arm. AUC of LM was, respectively, increased by 50% (p = 0.27) and 328% (p < 0.0001) in the NVP and LPVr arms but decreased in the EFV-arm by 30% (p = 0.019). Median day 7 LM concentration was less than 280 ng/mL in EFV-arm (239 ng/mL) but higher in control (290 ng/mL), NVP (369 ng/mL, p = 0.004) and LPVr (1331 ng/mL, p < 0.0001) arms. There were no clinically relevant toxicities nor adverse events in both control and test arms. Artemether/lumefantrine is safe and effective for treatment of malaria in PLWHA taking NVP and LPVr based ART regimen but not EFV-based regimen.

Abstract: ABSTRACTPolychlorinated naphthalenes (PCNs) are organochlorine compounds comprising the naphthalene ring system, in which one to eight hydrogen atoms have been substituted with chlorine atoms, yielding 75 chlorinated congeners. They were considered as persistent organic pollutants in May 2015 at the Stockholm Convention owing to their toxicity, persistence, bioaccumulation and potential for long-range transport in the environment. PCNs were invented in the early 1900s to be applied as flame-retardants in consumer products. Flame-retardants are effective in minimizing fire-related problems. However, their negative environmental impacts have become of great concerns. Different analytical methods for the evaluation of PCNs in various environmental samples were reviewed in this article.. Their levels in human and some environmental samples across the globe are also mentioned. Reported data revealed that the highly toxic congeners (CNs 66, 67 and 73) are prevalent in most samples, there is need for their continuous monitoring in our environment.

Abstract: Background: The knowledge of parameter estimation for interatomic potentials is useful in the computation of the vibrational structure of van der Waals molecules. Methods: On the estimation of the Generalized Morse and Classical Lennard-Jones potential energy functions, complex conjugates eigenvalues may be obtained. Different approaches can be used to solve this resulting problem. A method that uses the objective least squares function method to estimate parameters of the interatomic potentials is employed. Results: Numerical simulation of the systems using metal atoms yields complex conjugates eigenvalues at some initial point. Conclusion: Other approaches of solving the complex conjugates eigenvalues problem are discussed comprehensively.

Abstract: In Canada, there are currently no antibiotics approved for use in lactating dairy goats. Trimethoprim-sulfadoxine is indicated for the treatment of bacterial pneumonia, enteric and septicaemic colibacillosis and salmonellosis, infectious pododermatitis and septicaemias. The aim of this study was to determine the sulfadoxine-3 withdrawal time and evaluate the test accuracy of the Charm ROSA SULF test at the individual goat level. The study was conducted on 20 visibly healthy Ontario dairy goats. They received sulfadoxine-d3 at a dose of 16mg/kg IM once a day for 5 d as the commercially available preparation trimethoprim-sulfadoxine (Borgal, Merck Animal Health). Residue levels were measured using liquid chromatography-tandem mass spectrometry and the Charm ROSA SULF. The withdrawal time was calculated using safe concentration linear regression. The determined milk withdrawal time was 60 h.

Abstract: Data encryption which is associated with cryptography is necessary to prevent the compromise of Personally Identifying. Multi-level security is ensured by combining the Huffman code with certain cryptographic techniques, such as symmetric encryption algorithms. In order to decode the message, Huffman code can access both the code wordlist and the encoded bits. Inadequate error-correcting techniques with encoded bits can be harmed in this way, leading to the complete loss of information. Nevertheless, sending code wordlists and bits of code to the recipient takes a lot of transmission time. It is necessary to offer strategies for countermeasures to secure and fix the broken encoded bit. So, the problem is to safeguard the original wordlist from tampering without compromising the current code bit. Information. The goal of the investigation is to reduce interference in the levels of communication between the reader and the card. Due to the card's susceptibility, a Mifare classic 1K and Radio Frequency Identification (RFID) were used in this study's simulation. The experiment when N= 200 was conducted and the result below was obtained. The number of unique characters at 0.5 in AES running mode with 0.023 ms at CBC optimal and ECB 0.023 ms. It was possible to simulate the Advanced Encryption Standard (AES) using changing bytes and a number of unique characters.

37. Empirical analysis of the impact of entrepreneurial activity on economic growth of Global Entrepreneurship Monitor (GEM) countries

Abstract: This study conducted a practical examination of how entrepreneurial endeavors influence economic expansion by utilizing data from the Global Entrepreneurship Monitor (GEM) from 2001 to 2021 in 23 participating countries. Real Gross Domestic Product Per Capita (RGDPPC) represented economic expansion, while Established Business Ownership (EBO), High Job Creation Expectation (HJCE), and Total Early-Stage Entrepreneurship Activity (TEA) symbolized entrepreneurial endeavor. The interplay between EBO, TEA, and the National Entrepreneurship Context Index (NECI) was also assessed. The panel autoregressive distributed lag (ARDL) model was implemented after panel stationarity tests and co-movement analysis. Results reveal that TEA exerts no immediate short-term impact on economic growth, with long-term effects being contingent on short-term homogeneity or heterogeneity. The impact on the intended outcome was adverse in both the near and distant time frames for businesses that were already established, yet demonstrated a favorable lagged influence. High job creation expectations had a short-term adverse outcome on real per capita GDP expansion, yet a favorable impact over an extended duration. The inclusion of NECI indicated a significant influence regarding the correlation among entrepreneurial elements and real per capita GDP. Thus, the immediate effect of entrepreneurial activities on growth is not significant or positive, but over time, the impact becomes noticeable with sustained effort.

Abstract: The Monkeypox (Mpox) virus started developing as potentially fatal in Spring 2022. Mpox is a zoonotic disease that can spread between animals and people. While the cases in Nigeria are on the rise, Germany has become one of Europe’s most impacted nations. Mathematical modeling is useful for monitoring, managing, and predicting infectious disease epidemics. This study incorporates the transmission rate of human-to-animal and animal-to-animal in a compartmental mathematical model of Mpox to capture the current trend in transmission for wildlife and human preservation. Parameters were estimated while the model was fitted to reported case data of Mpox from Nigeria and Germany to capture the trend in Europe and West Africa. Analyses such as optimal control, sensitivity, and cost-effectiveness were carried out. The results show that the best strategy to combat the spread of the virus is through changing behavior and personal hygiene among humans.

39. Evaluation of the source, distribution and risk of metal contaminated stream sediment

Abstract: The research was conducted to determine the cause, dispersal, and risk assessment of metal-contaminated sediment. The sediment was collected from the Madna stream. It was transported to the laboratory, air-dried, ground with a mortar and pestle, and sieved. The sediment was digested with 10 ml of HNO3 and 30 ml of HCl and heated on a hot plate at 100 °C for about 2 hours. The 1 ml solution was diluted to about 50 ml and centrifuged at 1600 revolutions per minute for 10 minutes. The clear solution was analyzed by an atomic absorption spectrophotometer (AAS). The distribution of the average concentration showed that Cd < Cu < Co < Pb < Ni < Fe with a range of 0.03–72.81 mg/kg. The minimum Fe content was 99.78% higher than the maximum Ni, with Ni values being higher than other metals. The geoaccumulation index (igeo), the contamination factor (CF), and the pollution load index (PLI) showed insignificant contamination of the stream by the metals. However, the enrichment factor (EF) revealed minor to extreme enrichment for individual metals across the stations. However, The Ecological risk index (ERI) and Potential ecological risk (PER) showed low risk from individual and collective metals on the biota of the Madna stream ecosystem. There was no noncarcinogenic risk from the detected metals as the hazard quotient (HQ) and hazard index (HI) were <1; however, the children may suffer carcinogenic risk (CR) from cadmium through the nondietary oral route as Cadmium CR > 10−6.The sediment was assessed to be of high quality and posed no risk to the ecosystem as the average concentrations were lower than the effect range low (ERL), effect range median (ERM), and toxicology reference value (TRV). Based on the multivariate statistics and supported by EF, the sources of pollutants were anthropogenic and natural.

Abstract: Background and Objective: Intracranial abscesses complicating rhinosinusitis are now uncommon. Attitude of patients to the so called common cold, delay in diagnosis and relative inaccessibility to computed tomography scan contribute to persistence of the entity and its sequelae in our environment. Case Description: Four patients presented to our centre with this condition over an eighteen month period. All were male teenagers. Late presentation was common to all, and rhinological symptoms were less emphasized. Radical treatment of the intracranial abscesses and three of the primary foci was employed. Three of the patients were left with morbidities while one died. Conclusion: Claims of its rarity may not continue to be true in the developing countries where the factors associated with poverty and low socioeconomic standard of living are prevalent. Therefore clinicians need to be more alert and work as a team for early diagnosis and reduce its morbidity and mortality. Parents need to be educated. Abstract: Objectives: To determine the etiology, and pattern of hearing loss (HL) among patients seen in our clinic over an 18 months period. Methods: Questionnaire was administered to one thousand first attendee patients with HL. They were examined clinically, followed by pure tone audiometry and tympanometry. Result: There were 595 males and 405 females, ages between 1-100 years with a mean of 35.2[+ or -]22.68 years. Over 80% of patients within the 1st decade of life, presented as deaf mutes, chronic discharging ear was the commonest cause of HL within the 2nd and 3rd decade, and presbyacusis among 40yrs and above. Sensorineural HL (SNHL) was found in 51.5%, conductive HL (CHL) in 17.2%, and mixed HL 24.6%. Overall, 50% had severe to profound HL. Jergers Type A tympanogram was seen in 582(58.2%), type B in 366(36.6%), type C, As and Ad accounted for 52(5.2%). Bilateral SNHL of unknown causes were found in 412(41.2%), followed by infective diseases. Conclusion: SNHL was the commonest type of HL in this study. Otosclerosis accounted for 3.2%. It may be commoner among Negroids than previously documented. Two co-processed excipients, SGS and SMS were generated by combining tapioca starch (90%), gelatin or microcrystalline cellulose (7.5%) and colloidal silicon dioxide (2.5%) using the co-fusion method. Particle size analysis and morphological assessment were carried out by light microscopy and scanning electron microscopy (SEM) respectively. DSC analysis was performed to evaluate the thermal behaviour of both materials and flow properties were assessed by measuring parameters like angle of repose, bulk and tapped densities, Carr’s index and Hausner’s ratio. Compaction behaviour of both materials was determined using Heckel and Walker equations and the compressibility–tabletability–compactibility (CTC) profile for each material was obtained. Particulate and bulk-level properties of SGS and SMS revealed spherical-shaped, free-flowing powders characterized by a glass transition event typical of amorphous polymers. Compaction analysis demonstrated greater degree of plastic deformation with SMS resulting in better tableting properties with respect to tensile strength and disintegration time.The outcome of the study shows that the choice of binder used in the formulation of a co-processed excipient plays a crucial role in defining the material and tableting properties of the co-processed excipient.

45. An approach to optimize pre-annealing aging and anneal conditions to improve photovoltaic performance of perovskite solar cells

Abstract: In this study, we reported a low-temperature, one-step solution process to fabricate perovskite solar cells using dehydrated lead acetate as the lead source. These perovskite films were aged at 200 s before thermal annealing at 90 °C for 5 min. Uniform perovskite films with lesser pinholes were obtained by this technique. The inverted planar (n-i-p) perovskite solar cell device resulted in a power conversion efficiency of 13%. A substantial finding was that the devices demonstrated high reproducibility. We also investigated the effect of annealing temperature on the optical and structural properties of the films and on the photovoltaic performances of the fabricated solar cell devices. For the aforementioned, a low-temperature, one-step solution process, the optimal temperature was achieved at 90 °C.

46. From a small local audit to a regional quality improvement project – Improving lung protective ventilation

Abstract: Background Lung protective ventilation with tidal volumes (VT) of 6–8 ml per kg ideal body weight have been shown to reduce mortality in patients with acute respiratory distress syndrome and reduce post-operative pulmonary complications in major abdominal surgery. Following a local audit on weight recording, the Southcoast Perioperative Audit and Research Collaboration (SPARC) conducted a regional multi-disciplinary survey on the current practice in lung protective ventilation in the Wessex region. This resulted in a quality improvement project improving lung protective ventilation across these intensive care units.Methods Over one-week period in January over two consecutive years, lung protective ventilation parameters of mandatory ventilated patients (above the age of 18 years) were audited in intensive care units in the Wessex region.Results A total 1843 hours of mandatory ventilation were audited. The quality improvement project led to an improvement of lung protective ventilation with an average of 30% higher duration of ventilation with VT< 8 ml/kg ideal body weight. There was a suggestion that documentation of height and weight on admission to intensive care units improved compliance with lung protective ventilation.Conclusions Adherence to lung protective ventilation is variable across intensive care units but can be improved by recording patient’s weight and height accurately and using simple chart to help calculate the appropriate tidal volume. Additionally, this project demonstrates how a regional audit and quality improvement network can help to facilitate regional quality improvement.

47. Computationally efficient, multi-domain hybrid modeling of surface integrity in machining and related thermomechanical finishing processes

Abstract: In order to enable more widespread implementation of sophisticated process modeling, a novel, rapidly deployable multi-physics hybrid model of surface integrity in finishing operations is proposed. Rather than modeling detailed chip formation mechanics, as is common in numerical models, the proposed models integrates existing analytical and semi-empirical models of the plastic, elastic, thermal and thermodynamic domains. Using this approach, highly complex surface integrity phenomena such as residual stresses, grain size, phase composition, microhardness profile, etc. can be accurately predicted in a manner of seconds. It is envisioned that this highly efficient modeling scheme will drive new innovations in surface engineering.

48. Theoretical modeling and molecular docking simulation for investigating and evaluating some active compounds as potent anti-tubercular agents against MTB CYP121 receptor

Abstract: Theoretical modeling and molecular docking studies were carried out on cinnamic acid analogues as potent anti-tubercular agents. Theoretical models were developed to investigate the reported observed activities and modify the leading compound with better activity. Five predictive models were generated by employing Genetic Function Approximation (GFA) and Multi-linear Regression (MLR). Based on statistically significant, the optimum model with prominent validation parameters was selected. The selected model was found to have squared correlation coefficient (R2) of 0.942939, adjusted squared correlation coefficient (R2adj) value of 0.925382 and Leave one out (LOO) cross validation coefficient (Qcv2) value of 0.893486. External validations test were carried out in order to validate the selected model and the model was found to have (R2test) of 0.8612 and Coefficient of determination for Y-randomization (cRp2)value of 0.78571. The docking studies revealed the best molecule with docking scores of −13.7 kcal/mol which formed H-bond and hydrophobic interaction and with amino acid residues M. tuberculosiscytochromes (MTB CYP121). QSAR model generated propose the direction for the design of new anti-tubercular agents via ligand based design while molecular docking results against MTB CYP121 receptor provides a valuable approach for structure based design.

49. Identification of previously untypable RD cell line isolates and detection of EV-A71 genotype C1 in a child with AFP in Nigeria

Abstract: ABSTRACTWe previously attempted to identify 96 nonpolio enteroviruses (EVs) recovered in RD cell culture from children <15 years with acute flaccid paralysis in Nigeria. We succeeded in identifying 69 of the isolates. Here, we describe an attempt to identify the remaining 27 isolates. Twenty-six (the 27th isolate was exhausted) isolates/samples that could not be typed previously were further analyzed. All were subjected to RNA extraction, cDNA synthesis, enterovirus 5ʹ-UTR–VP2 PCR assay and a modified VP1 snPCR assay. Both the 5ʹ-UTR–VP2 and VP1 amplicons were sequenced, isolates identified and subjected to phylogenetic analysis.Twenty of the 26 samples analyzed were identified. Altogether, 23 (three samples had co-infection) EV strains were recovered. These belong to 11 EV (one EVA, nine EVB and one EVC) types which were EVA71 genotype C1 (1 strain), CVB3 (7 strains), CVB5 (1 strain), E5 (2 strain), E11 (3 strains), E13 (2 strain), E19 (1 strain), E20 (1 strain), E24 (2 strains), EVB75 (1 strain) and EVC99 (2 strains). Of the 11 EV types, the 5ʹ-UTR-VP2 assay identified seven while the VP1 assay identified 10. Both assays simultaneously detected 7 of the 11 EV types identified in this study with 100% congruence. We successfully identified 20 of 26 samples that were previously untypable. We also provided evidence that suggests a clade of EVA71 genotype C1 might have been circulating in sub-Saharan Africa since 2008. Finally, we showed that the 5ʹ-UTR -VP2 assay might be as valuable as the VP1 assay in EV identification.

50. Use of geophysical logs in hydrogeological studies and borehole designs: case study of Apapa coastal area, Lagos, Nigeria

Abstract: The hydrogeological study of Apapa, a coastal part of Lagos, Nigeria, has been investigated using combined geophysical borehole logs, consisting of natural gamma and electrical resistivity components and ditch cutting samples. This study utilized data from 10 boreholes to delineate freshwater aquifer and proposes the best borehole design and construction for optimum groundwater developments in the study area. The electrical resistivity log data show that the depth to the freshwater interface varies across the study area occurring between 150 and 160 m and as shallow as 110 m in a borehole. The variations in depth of the freshwater interfaces are attributed to the extent of saline/brackish water contamination and distribution of rock types. Based on these differences and the inability to identify water quality from ditch cuttings, borehole geophysical logging is a vital tool in providing in situ subsurface information of the rock types and fluid contents in groundwater studies. This further demonstrates that geophysical borehole logs play an important part in borehole design for development of water wells.
