The term 'marriageability' is used frequently in child marriage literature but is rarely defined. We propose a conceptual framework to define marriageability and use qualitative case studies to illustrate how ideas about marriageability contribute to child marriage. Pressure to capitalize on a girl's marriageability before it declines in order to secure the 'best' partner may explain why child marriage persists. We find that marriageability involves both eligibility--or perceived readiness for marriage--as well as desirability or 'value' on the marriage market. We propose that understanding marriageability in context, particularly in countries with limited evidence on interventions to address child marriage, is essential for suggesting ways interventions may critically examine notions of marriageability and disrupt pathways to child marriage. Due to the low number of individuals with HIV-2, no randomised trials of HIV-2 treatment have ever been done. We hypothesised that a non-comparative study describing the outcomes of several antiretroviral therapy (ART) regimens in parallel groups would improve understanding of how differences between HIV-1 and HIV-2 might lead to different therapeutic approaches.

Abstract:Since 2011, an increasing incidence of sexually transmitted infections and risky sexual practices has been reported among young adults in Canada. However, research on sexual risk behaviours of international students in North America is limited, despite an increasing number of students from abroad attending higher education institutions on this continent. This article shares research findings comparing the sexual practices of international and domestic students in five postsecondary institutions in three Canadian provinces (Manitoba, Ontario, Quebec). Two hundred forty-two international students and 1220 domestic students took part in the bilingual online and paper-based survey. Female international students were less likely to be sexually active than international male, domestic male, and domestic female students. International students were significantly less likely to partake in many risky sexual behaviours, such as inconsistent condom use and unplanned sex after consuming alcohol or drugs. However, male international students were more likely to report having multiple sexual partners than male domestic students. These findings are relevant to those who counsel and advise postsecondary students on Canadian campuses and for healthcare practitioners to better understand postsecondary students' sexual practices. Strategies to enhance sexual health and knowledge include targeted promotion of safe sexual practices and sexual education in postsecondary institutions.

Men of African descent have the highest prostate cancer incidence and mortality rates, yet the genetic basis of prostate cancer in African men has been understudied. We used genomic data from 3,963 cases and 3,509 controls from Ghana, Nigeria, Senegal, South Africa and Uganda to infer ancestry-specific genetic architectures and fine-map disease associations. Fifteen independent associations at 8q24.21, 6q22.1 and 11q13.3 reached genome-wide significance, including four new associations. Intriguingly, multiple lead associations are private alleles, a pattern arising from recent mutations and the out-of-Africa bottleneck. These African-specific alleles contribute to haplotypes with odds ratios above 2.4. We found that the genetic architecture of prostate cancer differs across Africa, with effect size differences contributing more to this heterogeneity than allele frequency differences. Population genetic analyses reveal that African prostate cancer associations are largely governed by neutral evolution. Collectively, our findings emphasize the utility of conducting genetic studies that use diverse populations.

Background: In 2021, an Ebola virus disease (EVD) outbreak was declared in Guinea, linked to persistent virus from the 2014–2016 West Africa Epidemic. This paper analyzes factors associated with contact tracing reliability (defined as completion of a 21-day daily follow-up) during the 2021 outbreak, and transitively, provides recommendations for enhancing contact tracing reliability in future. Methods: We conducted a descriptive and analytical cross-sectional study using multivariate regression analysis of contact tracing data from 1071 EVD contacts of 23 EVD cases (16 confirmed and 7 probable). Results: Findings revealed statistically significant factors affecting contact tracing reliability. Unmarried contacts were 12.76× more likely to miss follow-up than those married (OR = 12.76; 95% CI [3.39–48.05]; p&lt; 0.001). Rural-dwelling contacts had 99% lower odds of being missed during the 21-day follow-up, compared to those living in urban areas (OR = 0.01; 95% CI [0.00–0.02]; p&lt; 0.01). Contacts who did not receive food donations were 3× more likely to be missed (OR = 3.09; 95% CI [1.68–5.65]; p&lt; 0.001) compared to those who received them. Contacts in health areas with a single team were 8× more likely to be missed (OR = 8.16; 95% CI [5.57–11.96]; p&lt; 0.01) than those in health areas with two or more teams (OR = 1.00; 95% CI [1.68–5.65]; p&lt; 0.001). Unvaccinated contacts were 30.1× more likely to be missed compared to vaccinated contacts (OR = 30.1; 95% CI [5.12–176.83]; p&lt; 0.001). Conclusion: Findings suggest that contact tracing reliability can be significantly influenced by various demographic and organizational factors. Considering and understanding these factors—and where possible addressing them—may be crucial when designing and implementing contact tracing strategies during future outbreaks in low-resource settings.

The average coflow completion time (CCT) is the standard performance metric in coflow scheduling. However, standard CCT minimization may introduce unfairness between the data transfer phase of different computing jobs. Thus, while progress guarantees have been introduced in the literature to mitigate this fairness issue, the trade-off between fairness and efficiency of data transfer is hard to control. This paper introduces a fairness framework for coflow scheduling based on the concept of slowdown, i.e., the performance loss of a coflow compared to isolation. By controlling the slowdown it is possible to enforce a target coflow progress while minimizing the average CCT. In the proposed framework, the minimum slowdown for a batch of coflows can be determined in polynomial time. By showing the equivalence with Gaussian elimination, slowdown constraints are introduced into primal-dual iterations of the CoFair algorithm. The algorithm extends the class of the $\sigma$σ-order schedulers to solve the fair coflow scheduling problem in polynomial time. It provides a 4-approximation of the average CCT w.r.t. an optimal scheduler. Extensive numerical results demonstrate that this approach can trade off average CCT for slowdown more efficiently than existing state of the art schedulers.

The objective of this work is to predict daily PM2.5 air quality in Dakar, Senegal using data from an automated measurement station integrated into a server using a data assimilation model. Initially, a 3-year data set was used to identify and validate an appropriate ARIMA data assimilation model. The data was split into an 80% training set and a 20% test set. The Augmented Dickey-Fuller (ADF) test was used to check the normality of the data series. Subsequently, we used the AutoArima method to determine the optimal model to represent the time series. Preliminary results show that a model with order (2,1,1) accurately represents the series. Additional analysis using model fit tests showed that the (3, 0, 1) model was most effective in representing and predicting the data. The statistical validation performance of this model demonstrates its capability to forecast PM2.5 concentrations for up to 72 h (3 days), achieving correlation coefficients exceeding 80%. However, after three days, the predictions returned to background levels. In the final stage of the study, data from automatic stations were integrated into a server hosting the assimilation model to improve daily PM2.5 forecasts for Dakar. An interactive platform was developed to visualize measurements and forecasts over two days. The results show that by integrating the data with the assimilation model, predictions are significantly improved.

Safe anaesthesia and surgery are a public health imperative. There are few data describing outcomes for children undergoing anaesthesia and surgery in Africa. We aimed to get robust epidemiological data to describe patient care and outcomes for children undergoing anaesthesia and surgery in hospitals in Africa.

Schistosomiasis treatment entirely relies on a single drug, praziquantel, prompting research into alternative therapeutics. Here we evaluated the efficacy and safety of the antimalarial combination artesunate–mefloquine for the treatment of schistosomiasis in a proof-of-concept, pragmatic, open-label, randomized controlled trial in primary schools of six villages endemic for schistosomiasis in northern Senegal. Children (6–14 years) were eligible if Schistosomaeggs were detected by microscopy in urine and/or stool. In total, 726 children were randomized 1:1 to praziquantel (standard care: 40 mg kg−1single dose; n= 364) or to artesunate–mefloquine (antimalarial dosage: artesunate 4 mg kg−1and mefloquine 8 mg kg−1daily for three consecutive days; n= 362). Eight children not meeting the inclusion criteria were excluded from efficacy analysis. Median age of the remaining 718 participants was 9 years; 399 (55.6%) were male, and 319 (44.4%) female; 99.3% were infected with Schistosoma haematobiumand 15.2% with S. mansoni. Primary outcomes were cure rate, assessed by microscopy, and frequency of drug-related adverse effects of artesunate–mefloquine versus praziquantel at 4 weeks after treatment. Cure rate was 59.6% (208/349) in the artesunate–mefloquine arm versus 62.1% (211/340) in the praziquantel arm. The difference of −2.5% (95% confidence interval (CI) −9.8 to 4.8) met the predefined criteria of noninferiority (margin set at 10%). All drug-related adverse events were mild or moderate, and reported in 28/361 children receiving artesunate–mefloquine (7.8%; 95% CI 5.4 to 11.0) versus 8/363 (2.2%; 95% CI 1.1 to 4.3) receiving praziquantel (P< 0.001). Artesunate–mefloquine at antimalarial dosage was moderately safe and noninferior to standard-care praziquantel for the treatment of schistosomiasis, predominantly due to S. haematobium. Multicentric trials in different populations and epidemiological settings are needed to confirm these findings. ClinicalTrials.gov identifier: NCT03893097.

Senegal has experienced periodic epidemics of dengue in urban areas with increased incidence in recent years. However, few data are available on the local ecology of the epidemic vectors. In October 2021, a dengue outbreak was reported in northern Senegal to the Institute Pasteur de Dakar. Entomologic investigations then were undertaken to identify the areas at risk of transmission and to identify the vector(s). Adult mosquitoes were collected indoors and outdoors at selected households, while containers with water were inspected for mosquito larvae. All the Aedes aegypti(L.) collected were tested for dengue virus NS1 protein using a rapid diagnostic test (RDT), and positive samples were confirmed by real-time RT–PCR. The qRT–PCR positive samples were subjected to whole genome sequencing using Nanopore technology. The majority of the larvae-positive containers (83.1%) were used for water storage. The Breteau and Container indices exceeded the WHO-recommended thresholds for the risk of dengue virus transmission except at 2 localities. Ae. aegypti, the only reputed dengue vector, was collected resting indoors as well as outdoors and biting during the day and night. The NS1 protein was detected in 22 mosquito pools, including one pool of females emerging from field-collected larvae. All NS1-positive results were confirmed by RT-PCR. Virus serotyping showed that the outbreak was caused by DENV-1. This study demonstrates the need for continuous control of adult and aquatic stages of Ae. aegyptito prevent future dengue epidemics in Senegal. RDTs appear to be a promising tool for dengue diagnostics and surveillance.Graphical Abstract

Choroid plexus (CP) enlargement is proposed as a marker of neuroinflammation in immune-mediated conditions. CP involvement has also been hypothesized in the immunopathology of systemic lupus erythematosus (SLE). We investigated whether CP enlargement occurs in SLE patients and its association with neuropsychiatric involvement. Additionally, we explored abnormalities along the glymphatic system in SLE patients through enlarged perivascular space (PVS) quantification. Clinical assessment and 3 Tesla brain dual-echo and T1-weighted MRI scans were obtained from 32 SLE patients and 32 sex and age-matched healthy controls (HC). CPs were manually segmented on 3D T1-weighted sequence and enlarged PVS (ePVS) were assessed through Potter’s score. Compared to HC, SLE patients showed higher normalized CP volume (nCPV) (p= 0.023), with higher CP enlargement in neuropsychiatric SLE (NPSLE) (n= 12) vs. non-NPSLE (p= 0.027) patients. SLE patients with antiphospholipid antibodies (APA) positivity (n= 18) had higher nCPV compared to HC (p= 0.012), while APA negative ones did not. SLE patients also had higher Potter’s score than HC (p< 0.001), with a tendency towards a higher number of basal ganglia ePVS in NPSLE vs. non-NPSLE patients. Using a random forest analysis, nCPV emerged as a significant predictor of NPSLE, together with T2-hyperintense white matter (WM) lesion volume (LV) and APA positivity (out-of-bag AUC 0.81). Our findings support the hypothesis of a role exerted by the CP in SLE physiopathology, especially in patients with neuropsychiatric involvement. The higher prevalence of ePVS in SLE patients, compared to HC, suggests the presence of glymphatic system impairment in this population.

The transferability and clinical value of genetic risk scores (GRSs) across populations remain limited due to an imbalance in genetic studies across ancestrally diverse populations. Here we conducted a multi-ancestry genome-wide association study of 156,319 prostate cancer cases and 788,443 controls of European, African, Asian and Hispanic men, reflecting a 57% increase in the number of non-European cases over previous prostate cancer genome-wide association studies. We identified 187 novel risk variants for prostate cancer, increasing the total number of risk variants to 451. An externally replicated multi-ancestry GRS was associated with risk that ranged from 1.8 (per standard deviation) in African ancestry men to 2.2 in European ancestry men. The GRS was associated with a greater risk of aggressive versus non-aggressive disease in men of African ancestry (P= 0.03). Our study presents novel prostate cancer susceptibility loci and a GRS with effective risk stratification across ancestry groups.

Anopheles gambiaeand Anopheles coluzzii, often found in sympatry and synchronous, have undergone a premating reproductive isolation across their distribution range. However, in the Western coast of Africa, unexpected hybridization zones have been observed, and little is known about swarming behavior of these cryptic taxa. Here, we characterized the swarming behavior of An. coluzziiand An. gambiaeto investigate its role in the high hybridization level in Senegal. The study was conducted in the south and central Senegal during the 2018 rainy season. Mating swarms of malaria vectors were surveyed at sunset and collected using an insect net. Meanwhile, indoor resting populations of malaria vectors were collected by pyrethrum spray catches. Upon collection, specimens were identified morphologically, and then members of the An. gambiaecomplex were identified at the species level by polymerase chain reaction (PCR). An. gambiaeswarmed mainly over bare ground, whereas An. coluzziiwere found swarming above various objects creating a dark–light contrast with the bare ground. The swarms height varied from 0.5 to 2.5 m. Swarming starting time was correlated with sunset whatever the months for both species, and generally lasted about 10 min. No mixed swarm of An. gambiaeand An. coluzziiwas found even in the high hybridization area. These results indicated a premating isolation between An. coluzziiand An. gambiae.However, the high hybridization rate in the sympatric area suggests that heterogamous mating is occurring, thus stressing the need for further extensive studies.

This paper presents stringent comparisons between Vector Fitting (VFIT), Relaxed Vector Fitting (R-VFIT) and Rational Krylov Fitting (RKFIT) techniques in the fitting of transmission line and cable functions to rational forms while accounting for the frequency dependence of electrical parameters. The fitting procedures encapsulate new solution strategies to improve fitting performance. Various case studies are presented to assess the performance of RKFIT in terms of model order reduction, passivity violation and computing times. In addition, the use of RKFIT in obtaining the frequency dependent cable model (FDCM) is demonstrated for the first time together with a resolved case study that showed unstable behavior with the universal line model (ULM) methodology.

The establishment of the rhizobium-legume symbiosis is generally based on plant perception of Nod factors (NFs) synthesized by the bacteria. However, some Bradyrhizobiumstrains can nodulate certain legume species, such as Aeschynomenespp. or Glycine max, independently of NFs, and via two different processes that are distinguished by the necessity or not of a type III secretion system (T3SS). ErnA is the first known type III effector (T3E) triggering nodulation in Aeschynomene indica. In this study, a collection of 196 sequenced Bradyrhizobiumstrains was tested on A. indica. Only strains belonging to the photosynthetic supergroup can develop a NF-T3SS-independent symbiosis, while the ability to use a T3SS-dependent process is found in multiple supergroups. Of these, 14 strains lacking ernAwere tested by mutagenesis to identify new T3Es triggering nodulation. We discovered a novel T3E, Sup3, a putative SUMO-protease without similarity to ErnA. Its mutation in Bradyrhizobiumstrains NAS96.2 and WSM1744 abolishes nodulation and its introduction in an ernAmutant of strain ORS3257 restores nodulation. Moreover, ectopic expression of sup3in A. indicaroots led to the formation of spontaneous nodules. We also report three other new T3Es, Ubi1, Ubi2 and Ubi3, which each contribute to the nodulation capacity of strain LMTR13. These T3Es have no homology to known proteins but share with ErnA three motifs necessary for ErnA activity. Together, our results highlight an unsuspected distribution and diversity of T3Es within the Bradyrhizobiumgenus that may contribute to their symbiotic efficiency by participating in triggering legume nodulation.

Epidemiological data predicts that sub-Saharan Africa will have the largest increase in type 2 diabetes (T2D) prevalence over the next two decades. Metabolomics studies have identified biomarkers that could improve T2D diagnosis and follow-up. However, no studies have characterized the metabolome of people from sub-Saharan Africa. Plasma samples from Senegalese individuals with T2D (n= 31) or without T2D (n= 34) were compared using measures of oxidative stress damage and plasma antioxidant enzyme activity and mass-spectrometry-based metabolomics analyses. Results showed that glucose, lactate, and tricarboxylic acid metabolites (fumarate, malate, and succinate) were increased in the T2D group, suggesting alterations in glycolysis and mitochondrial dysfunction. Several amino acids (leucine, isoleucine, valine, and tryptophan) and long-to-very-long-chain fatty acids were higher in the T2D group. Finally, elevated levels of ketone bodies and acylcarnitines were observed along with increased levels of oxidative stress damage and antioxidant activity. In conclusion, the T2D group exhibited modifications in metabolites previously shown to be associated with T2D risk in populations from other areas of the world. Future studies should seek to test whether these metabolites could be used as predictors for T2D-related complications in people from sub-Saharan Africa.

To analyze the dynamic of ion species through a MAPbI3–xClx(HaP) solar cell, an operando hard X-ray photoelectron spectroscopy (HAXPES) study was proposed. Stacked Au/Ag/AZO/PCBM/HaP/NiO/ITO/glass structures, where AZO, PCBM, NiO, and ITO stand for Al-doped zinc oxide, phenyl-C61-butyric acid methyl ester, nickel oxide, and indium tin oxide, respectively, were evaluated. Experimental core level analysis under an applied bias voltage highlighted that a certain threshold voltage (above the open-circuit voltage (VOC)) is required to trigger the iodide (I–) migration from the HaP to the adjacent electron and hole transport layers. Study also demonstrated that the diffusion of I–in AZO/PCBM over time is unidirectional and follows the gradient descent in concentration. We observed that the irreversibility of the I–transport leads to the absorption of I–by the Ag layer to form a silver iodide (AgI) compound. Furthermore, this work also pointed out the efficiency of an ITO layer when deposited between Ag and AZO to serve as the ion diffusion barrier layer. Finally, the results demonstrated that the presence of ITO restrains the AgI formation and contributes to improving cell performances.

A post-acne hyperpigmentation index (PAHPI) has been developed in the United States to better compare therapeutic modalities. Our aim in this study was to validate the PAHPI score in patients with skin type VI from sub-Saharan Africa.

Patients with autoimmune polyendocrinopathy syndrome type 1 (APS-1) caused by autosomal recessive AIRE deficiency produce autoantibodies that neutralize type I interferons (IFNs)1,2, conferring a predisposition to life-threatening COVID-19 pneumonia3. Here we report that patients with autosomal recessive NIK or RELB deficiency, or a specific type of autosomal-dominant NF-κB2 deficiency, also have neutralizing autoantibodies against type I IFNs and are at higher risk of getting life-threatening COVID-19 pneumonia. In patients with autosomal-dominant NF-κB2 deficiency, these autoantibodies are found only in individuals who are heterozygous for variants associated with both transcription (p52 activity) loss of function (LOF) due to impaired p100 processing to generate p52, and regulatory (IκBδ activity) gain of function (GOF) due to the accumulation of unprocessed p100, therefore increasing the inhibitory activity of IκBδ (hereafter, p52LOF/IκBδGOF). By contrast, neutralizing autoantibodies against type I IFNs are not found in individuals who are heterozygous for NFKB2variants causing haploinsufficiency of p100 and p52 (hereafter, p52LOF/IκBδLOF) or gain-of-function of p52 (hereafter, p52GOF/IκBδLOF). In contrast to patients with APS-1, patients with disorders of NIK, RELB or NF-κB2 have very few tissue-specific autoantibodies. However, their thymuses have an abnormal structure, with few AIRE-expressing medullary thymic epithelial cells. Human inborn errors of the alternative NF-κB pathway impair the development of AIRE-expressing medullary thymic epithelial cells, thereby underlying the production of autoantibodies against type I IFNs and predisposition to viral diseases.

Robots can be used to make the work of human beings easier in dangerous environments and for repetitive tasks that are hard to perform all day. There are many cases where a robot performs much better than a human at a job. One area that is very dangerous for human beings is the area of sewer inspection. In this paper, we compare machine learning models for concrete deterioration detection in sewers. The analysis and experiments based on the Zurich sewers called Sewer Terrain Inspection Knowledge (STINK) Dataset show that the GRU model performs better than other traditional machine learning algorithms. Specifically, the GRU model outperforms the SVM model by 11.2%, the k-nearest neighbors by 21.2%, and the random forest by 13.2% in accuracy.

This study aims to evaluate the seasonal performance of six solar power plants in Senegal. Four of them, located in Bokhol, Sakal, Malicounda, and Kahone, have photovoltaic panels with a capacity of 20 MW, while the remaining two plants in TenMerina and Mekhe have panels with a capacity of 30 MW. To achieve this goal, the study real production data and conducted simulations using three commonly used models: RETScreen, PVGIS, and PVsyst. The analysis of field data clearly shows a significant seasonal variation in energy production, with the highest values occurring during the spring months, from March to May. The rainy season results in the lowest production levels, with the weakest output observed in September. This seasonal fluctuation is due to the presence of clouds and dust, which reduce the amount of solar radiation reaching the panels and therefore decrease the plant's production. Additionally, using movable solar panels at the Sakal plant leads to an excess production of more than 19% compared to the other 20 MW plants that use fixed panels. Subsequently, the study used RETScreen, PVGIS, and PVsyst models to simulate the plant's seasonal production. The results show that the models effectively simulate the seasonal production variations of each plant. PVGIS and PVsyst provide more accurate results, with correlation coefficients higher than 0.9, while RETScreen simulates production with a coefficient of approximately 0.7. Furthermore, PVGIS and PVsyst have an additional advantage over RETScreen as they consider mobile solar panels similar to those used at the Sakal plant. Finally, statistical indicators reveal that the PVsyst model performs better than the others in accurately simulating the seasonal production of both fixed and mobile solar power plants in Sahelian environments.

BackgroundChoroid plexus (CP) enlargement has been suggested as a reliable marker of neuroinflammation in adult multiple sclerosis (MS). We investigated CP volume in patients with paediatric MS compared with matched healthy controls (HC), possible sex-related effect, and the associations with clinical and structural MRI variables.MethodsBrain 3.0 T dual-echo and three-dimensional (3D) T1-weighted sequences were selected retrospectively from 69 patients with paediatric MS and 23 age-matched and sex-matched HC. CP volume was manually obtained from 3D T1-weighted scans by two expert raters.ResultsCP segmentation was highly reproducible (intraobserver agreement: rater I=0.963, rater II=0.958; interobserver agreement=0.968). Compared with HC, patients with paediatric MS showed higher normalised CP volume (p<0.001). Both female and male patients with paediatric MS showed higher normalised CP volume compared with sex-matched HC (women: p<0.001 and men: p=0.021), with a significant disease×sex interaction (p=0.040). In patients with MS, a higher normalised CP volume was significantly associated with higher brain lesional volume (β=0.252, p=0.017), larger lateral ventricle volume (β=0.470, false discovery rate (FDR)-p<0.001), lower normalised brain volume (β=−0.413, FDR-p=0.002) and lower normalised thalamic volume (β=0.291, FDR-p=0.046). No associations with disease duration, Expanded Disability Status Scale score, normalised cortical and white matter volumes were found (FDR-p≥0.172). A significant effect of the disease in the negative association between normalised volumes of CP and thalami was observed (FDR-p=0.046).ConclusionsCP enlargement occurs in paediatric MS, suggesting its early involvement in the pathophysiology of the disease. The higher CP volume, which is found especially in female patients, supports the hypothesis of sex-related differences occurring already in paediatric MS.

Glass-coated amorphous ferromagnetic microwires subjected to variations in mass loading and parallel wire arrays with 0.5–6-cm interwire spacing were found to deliver exceptional magnetomechanical and wireless giant magnetoimpedance (GMI) responses, in the kilohertz and microwave range, respectively. The microwires allow wireless quantification of microgram mass differences: the magnetomechanical resonance frequency measured in zero applied field demonstrates an approximately linear decrease of 3 Hz/ $\mu \text{g}$ , and a sensitivity response that is ten times greater than that reported for commercial METGLAS-type amorphous magnetic ribbons of comparable length. Microwave giant magnetoimpedance data collected from planar arrays of parallel microwires show either constructive or destructive interference when compared to data obtained from a single microwire. The exceptional responsiveness of the glass-coated amorphous ferromagnetic microwires to mass loading and to geometric arrangement, along with their small diameter and ease of fabrication, highlights their promise for a wide variety of sensor applications, including biosensing, civil infrastructure monitoring, and high-throughput remote detection schemes.

In this work, we extend our historical study on the most significant software security weaknesses, reevaluate our findings, and look closely at the injection and memory corruption/disclosure weaknesses through the NIST Bugs Framework lenses. Our goal is to continue raising awareness about the patterns of reoccurring software security vulnerabilities that enable malicious activity.

In multiple sclerosis (MS), gray matter (GM) atrophy progresses in a non-random manner, possibly in regions with a high distribution of specific neurotransmitters involved in several relevant central nervous system functions. We investigated the associations among regional GM atrophy, atlas-based neurotransmitter distributions and clinical manifestations in a large MS patients’ group. Brain 3 T MRI scans, neurological examinations and neuropsychological evaluations were obtained from 286 MS patients and 172 healthy controls (HC). Spatial correlations among regional GM volume differences and atlas-based nuclear imaging-derived neurotransmitter maps, and their associations with MS clinical features were investigated using voxel-based morphometry and JuSpace toolbox. Compared to HC, MS patients showed widespread GM atrophy being spatially correlated with the majority of neurotransmitter maps (false discovery rate [FDR]-p ≤ 0.004). Patients with a disease duration ≥ 5 vs < 5 years had significant cortical, subcortical and cerebellar atrophy, being spatially correlated with a higher distribution of serotoninergic and dopaminergic receptors (FDR-p ≤ 0.03). Compared to mildly-disabled patients, those with Expanded Disability Status Scale ≥ 3.0 or ≥ 4.0 had significant cortical, subcortical and cerebellar atrophy being associated with serotonergic, dopaminergic, opioid and cholinergic maps (FDR-p ≤ 0.04). Cognitively impaired vs cognitively preserved patients had widespread GM atrophy being spatially associated with serotonergic, dopaminergic, noradrenergic, cholinergic and glutamatergic maps (FDR-p ≤ 0.04). Fatigued vs non-fatigued MS patients had significant cortical, subcortical and cerebellar atrophy, not associated with neurotransmitter maps. No significant association between GM atrophy and neurotransmitter maps was found for depression. Regional GM atrophy with specific neurotransmitter systems may explain part of MS clinical manifestations, including locomotor disability, cognitive impairment and fatigue.

Purpose: Respiratory dysfunction is one of the most frequent symptoms observed during sepsis reflecting hypoxemia and/or acidosis that may be assessed by the ROX index (ratio of oxygen saturation by pulse oximetry/fraction of inspired oxygen to respiratory rate). This study aimed to describe the relationship between the prehospital ROX index and 30-day mortality rate among septic shock patients cared for in the prehospital setting by a mobile intensive care unit (MICU). Methods: From May 2016 to December 2021, 530 septic shock patients cared for by a prehospital MICU were retrospectively analysed. Initial ROX index value was calculated at the first contact with MICU. A Cox regression analysis after propensity score matching was performed to assess the relationship between 30-day mortality rate and a ROX index ≤ 10. Results: Pulmonary, digestive and urinary sepsis were suspected among 43%, 25% and 17% patients, respectively. The 30-day overall mortality reached 31%. Cox regression analysis showed a significant association between 30-day mortality and a ROX index ≤ 10: adjusted hazard ratio of 1.54 [1.08–2.31], p&lt; 0.05. Conclusions: During the prehospital stage of septic shock patients cared for by a MICU, ROX index is significantly associated with 30-day mortality. A prehospital ROX ≤ 10 value is associated with a 1.5-fold 30-day mortality rate increase. Prospective studies are needed to confirm the ability of prehospital ROX to predict sepsis outcome since the prehospital setting.

Crop landraces have unique local agroecological and societal functions and offer important genetic resources for plant breeding. Recognition of the value of landrace diversity and concern about its erosion on farms have led to sustained efforts to establish ex situ collections worldwide. The degree to which these efforts have succeeded in conserving landraces has not been comprehensively assessed. Here we modelled the potential distributions of eco-geographically distinguishable groups of landraces of 25 cereal, pulse and starchy root/tuber/fruit crops within their geographic regions of diversity. We then analysed the extent to which these landrace groups are represented in genebank collections, using geographic and ecological coverage metrics as a proxy for genetic diversity. We find that ex situ conservation of landrace groups is currently moderately comprehensive on average, with substantial variation among crops; a mean of 63% ± 12.6% of distributions is currently represented in genebanks. Breadfruit, bananas and plantains, lentils, common beans, chickpeas, barley and bread wheat landrace groups are among the most fully represented, whereas the largest conservation gaps persist for pearl millet, yams, finger millet, groundnut, potatoes and peas. Geographic regions prioritized for further collection of landrace groups for ex situ conservation include South Asia, the Mediterranean and West Asia, Mesoamerica, sub-Saharan Africa, the Andean mountains of South America and Central to East Asia. With further progress to fill these gaps, a high degree of representation of landrace group diversity in genebanks is feasible globally, thus fulfilling international targets for their ex situ conservation.

The compositional space of high-entropy-alloy nanoparticles (HEA NPs) significantly expands the diversity of the materials library. Every atom in HEA NPs has a different elemental coordination environment, which requires knowledge of the local electronic structure at an atomic level. However, such structure has not been disclosed experimentally or theoretically. We synthesized HEA NPs composed of all eight noble-metal-group elements (NM-HEA) for the first time. Their electronic structure was revealed by hard X-ray photoelectron spectroscopy and density function theory calculations with NP models. The NM-HEA NPs have a lower degeneracy in energy level compared with the monometallic NPs, which is a common feature of HEA NPs. The local density of states (LDOS) of every surface atom was first revealed. Some atoms of the same constituent element in HEA NPs have different LDOS profiles, whereas atoms of other elements have similar LDOS profiles. In other words, one atom in HEA loses its elemental identity and it may be possible to create an ideal LDOS by adjusting the neighboring atoms. The tendency of the electronic structure change was shown by supervised learning. The NM-HEA NPs showed 10.8-times higher intrinsic activity for hydrogen evolution reaction than commercial Pt/C, which is one of the best catalysts.

Objective: We tested the hypothesis that the mechanism of respiratory insufficiency in drug-induced coma involving benzodiazepines is an increase in upper airway resistance. Methods: Eighteen nonintubated and seven intubated (control) patients were poisoned with hypnotic sedatives involving benzodiazepines. Neurological and respiratory parameters were measured by polysomnography before and after flumazenil. Flumazenil was administered as escalating bolus doses followed by a continuous infusion. Results: Upon entry, Glasgow Coma Score was 7 [+ or -] 1 in nonintubated and 5 [+ or -] 1 in intubated patients. Snoring with flow limitation and obstructive apnea were recorded in 16 and 5 among the 18 nonintubated patients, respectively. Central apnea was not observed. Total pulmonary resistance was 2.5-fold higher in nonintubated patients than in intubated patients. Total and resistive work of breathing (WOB) was significantly greater in the nonintubated group. Flumazenil bolus administration was associated with an improvement in Glasgow Coma Score from 7 [+ or-] 1 to 13 [+ or -] 1 in the nonintubated patients, and from 5 [+ or -] 1 to 11 [+ or -] 1 in the intubated patients. Mean effective bolus doses were 0.3 [+ or-] 0.1 mg in nonintubated patients and 0.6 [+ or-] 0.1 mg in intubated patients. Tidal and minute volumes increased significantly, and WOB decreased significantly in nonintubated patients. In nonintubated patients, the decrease in total WOB resulted from a significant decrease in resistive WOB. Conclusions: Drug-induced coma involving benzodiazepines is characterized by snoring with flow limitation and obstructive apnea. The roughness of shallow or deep metallic diffraction gratings modifies the propagation of surface plasmon mode along the metallic–air interface. The scattering losses lead to a spectral or angular broadening of the surface plasmon resonance (SPR) and to a shift of the resonance wavelength and coupling angle. This mechanism is deeply analyzed both experimentally and theoretically to overcome these effects when such structures, in particular deep ones, are used as SPR-based sensors.

The strong interaction is not well understood at low energies or for interactions with low momentum transfer. Chiral perturbation theory gives testable predictions for the nucleonic generalized polarizabilities, which are fundamental quantities describing the nucleon’s response to an external field. We report a measurement of the proton’s generalized spin polarizabilities extracted with a polarized electron beam and a polarized solid ammonia target in the region where chiral perturbation theory is expected to be valid. The investigated structure function g2characterizes the internal spin structure of the proton. From its moments, we extract the longitudinal–transverse spin polarizability δLTand twist-3 matrix element and polarizability d2¯. Our results provide discriminating power between existing chiral perturbation theory calculations and will help provide a better understanding of this strong quantum chromodynamics regime.

Methods: We assembled a retrospective series of 35 consecutive comatose patients admitted between October 1992 and July 1993 to a toxicologic ICU with the presumptive diagnosis of drug overdose. These patients were divided into two groups. Group A (low-risk) patients had a clinical picture compatible with uncomplicated benzodiazepine intoxication (calm, without abnormalities in pulse or blood pressure, lateralizing signs, hypertonia, hyperreflexia, or myoclonus) in the absence of predefined electrocardiographic or clinical signs of tricyclic antidepressant or other proconvulsant overdose, and absence of an available history of long-term benzodiazepine treatment or an underlying seizure disorder. Group B ('non-low risk') comprised all other patients. Efficacy of flumazenil was categorized as complete awakening (with normal level of alertness), partial awakening, or no change in alertness level. The safety of flumazenil was defined on the basis of the absence of seizures or death. Results: In group A (n=4), flumazenil was associated with complete awakening in three patients and partial awakening in one. No seizures were observed. In group B (n=31), flumazenil was associated with complete awakening in 4 patients, partial awakening in 5, and no response in 22. In group B, five seizures occurred. Conclusion: Comatose patients with clinical or ECG criteria thought to contraindicate the use of flumazenil have a reasonably high risk of seizures after administration of this drug. Low-risk patients may be able to receive flumazenil safely, but they may be only a small portion of comatose patients with suspected overdose. Aedes aegypti(Linnaeus) is the main vector of most arboviruses in tropical and subtropical urban areas. In West Africa, particularly in Senegal, domestic and wild populations have been described. Both Ae. aegypti aegypti(Aaa) and Ae. aegypti formosus (Aaf) were found in progenies of Ae. aegyptifamilies from several localities of Senegal. However, nothing is known about their resting and trophic behavior, which are key data for vector control. To fill this gap, blood-fed mosquitoes were collected monthly indoors and outdoors with BackPack aspirators and BG-Sentinel 2 traps between July and November 2019 from four urban sites. The enzyme-linked immunosorbent assay technique was used to analyze blood-fed Aaaand Aafspecimens. Both forms were found resting in all investigated places with the highest proportions found in scrap metals (51.7% for Aaaand 44.1% for Aaf) and used tires (19.2% for Aaaand 26.1% for Aaf). Blood-fed Aaffemales showed lower occupation of the indoors environment compared to Aaa. Overall, the percentages of single bloodmeals from human were 80.5% (916/1138) for Aaaand 71.1% (263/370) for Aaf. A low frequency of other domestic hosts, including bovine, ovine, and cat were detected for both forms. This study provides the first data on resting and trophic behavior of Aaaand Aafin Senegal. Both forms showed differences in their resting behavior but fed primarily on human and highlight the risk of arboviruses transmission in urban areas.
