The Sixth International Workshop on Narrative Extraction from Texts (Text2Story'23) was held on April 2nd, 2023, in conjunction with the 45th European Conference on Information Retrieval (ECIR 2023) in Dublin, Ireland. Continuing the tradition of past years, the workshop was held as a hybrid event. Online participation was allowed using the Zoom platform. During the course of the day, more than 50 attendees had the opportunity to follow up and discuss the recent advances in topics related to representation, extraction, and generation of narratives. The Fifth International Workshop on Narrative Extraction from Texts (Text2Story'22) was held on the April 10th, 2022, in conjunction with the 44th European Conference on Information Retrieval (ECIR 2022) in Stavanger, Norway. Due to the COVID-19 restrictions that are still active in some countries, the workshop was held as an hybrid event, combining a "live" in-person and a "virtual" online participation. The online participation was allowed using the Zoom platform. During the course of the day, more than 50 attendees - about 40 in person and 10 in zoom - had the opportunity to follow-up and discuss the recent advances in topics related to representation, extraction, and generation of narratives. Purpose: To trace a shift in attitudes towards control since the mid-twentieth century, as reflected in a shift in rhetoric that accompanied the extension from first- to second-order cybernetics. Design/methodology/approach: Narratives of exploration that have emerged from NASA's lunar programme and recent design cybernetics are juxtaposed to show a transition away from the legitimisation of goal-oriented decision-making and control towards advocacy of partial control avoidance and accommodation of the unanticipated. Findings: Contemporary cybernetic theory recognises the importance of both the partial presence and the partial absence of control in creative epistemic practice. It is thus unsurprising that, according to historical records, NASA's journey to the moon was enabled not only by the assurance of control but also by lapses of control. However, NASA's rhetorical posture during the race to the moon focused on predictable control and goal orientation, differing notably from the recent design-cybernetic openness towards uncertainty, error, and serendipity. This difference is encapsulated by the "Failure is not an option" dictum that was associated with NASA's lunar programme and the "Try Again. Fail Again. Fail Better" equivalent associated with design cybernetics. Recognition of the more recent cybernetic perspective is impeded by its continuing omission from narratives of earlier cybernetic accomplishments. Research limitations/implications: To the extent that narratives examined in this paper refer to exceptional initiatives and spontaneous events, the repeatability and generalisability of the presented argument are limited. Originality/value: The paper highlights changing cybernetic narratives of creative invention by examining how spontaneous changes in variety were reported to have been addressed in NASA's lunar programme, and how recent cybernetic design theory suggests they should be addressed. In his novel The Garden of Evening Mists, Tan Twan Eng, a contemporary novelist from Malaysia, meditates on the nature of remembering and forgetting, of selective preservation of the past and willful amnesia that constitutes the work of nostalgia and memory. Individual recollections are intertwined with the historical references to give a glimpse of trauma and nostalgia which undercut the discourses of collective history and nation-building in Malaysia. This paper unpacks the silences and erasures that create this overlap of trauma and nostalgia in The Garden of Evening Mists. Traumatizing memories of the colonial past, willfully forgotten and repressed, permeate the nostalgic narratives of the present. Through the metaphor of the garden which is central to the novel, Tan creates a space for interconnected memories, some explicit and some hidden in the landscape. Through these multidirectional memories where each act of remembrance evokes other memories of loss and suffering, the narrative reflects on the parallel tasks of remembering and forgetting in shaping the present and its accounts of the past. The novel touches on the forms of historical nostalgia where forgetting plays as important a role as remembering. In Tan's novel, the postcolonial condition entails a form of survival where nostalgia for the past is forever linked to its trauma. [ABSTRACT FROM AUTHOR]

Purpose – The purpose of this paper is to explore how second-order cybernetics (von Foerster, 2002) functions in new media artworks, specifically through information, system and user. While formulating the relationship between new media artworks and the discourses surrounding cybernetics the paper analyzes Popp’s (2006) Bit.Fall, Wojtowicz’s (2007) Elsewhere News and Zeren Göktan’s (2013) The Counter, as exemplars of alternative methods of narration. This study further argues that these new media artworks employ a cybernetic narrative via modes of “circularity,” “feedback,” and “perception.” Design/methodology/approach – This paper offers a theoretical approach to new media art and cybernetics in order to analyze three select works. Since the works mentioned have diverse takes on the presented concepts each is discussed and analyzed in their frame of production in relation to cybernetics and new media standpoints. Findings – It is significant that these three artists attempt to invert the quotidian into the concept of new media while cybernetics facilitates their interactive art installations. The fully functioning circularity in these works breaks down the linear narrative structure while regenerating a non-linear narrative together with the flow of information, utilization of the systems and the user interaction. In these works narrative functions as a tool for interaction, which is cybernetically generated by the user (human) and the systems (machine). Originality/value – New media artworks at least suggest a possibility of observing contemporary art and its history in the making if not generating it altogether through cybernetic modes of “circularity,” “feedback” and “perception.” The experience of these artworks for each user differs depending on their choice to either reject or become immersed in the work. Purpose – The purpose of this paper is to address the paradox in identity management that sees people happily sharing personal information in some circumstances, such as via social networks, yet defending their right to privacy in others, such as in interactions with the state. The authors examine the predominant explanations and elaborate how these ignore the different types of individual acts and agency involved in identity management. The authors conclude with a proposal to consider alternative, narrative approaches to identity management (IM). Design/methodology/approach – This paper has been developed out of the empirical research examining public responses to new forms of IM, based on, among other things, Delphi interviews with experts, films and television series and survey and focus group data about people's feelings and attitudes. The authors have combined these data into an approach that theorises rather than reports about public engagements with IM. Findings – Finding any explanation for the paradox that rests on the distinction between state and commercial contexts to be less and less satisfactory, the paper reframes the problem as one of varying degrees of agency, from submission to transaction and expression. The latter, the authors argue, has been written out of modern IM, which is at odds with the centrality of narrative to the human sense of self. Originality/value – The field of IM has yet to consider “identity” in terms beyond distinct attributes and bits of information. In this paper the authors set out to demonstrate the value of a notion of IM that is sensitive to degrees of agency and the authors ask how the fundamental human desire to narrate the self might become a part of IM systems. Purpose – To ask if humans have a categorical obligation to maintain narratives, especially personal narratives of identity? Or, are we better off evolving past such things? This question is closely related to a discussion of how and why humans tend to place value on a certain amount of organization in content, semantic and otherwise. The paper aims to discuss these issues. Design/methodology/approach – Examples from a personal art projects set the stage for the major questions of the paper regarding the ordering of content. Findings – One can create a Cartesian mapping of content, with Shannon Entropy and Kolmogorov Complexity as the two vectors, thus constructing a histogram that is useful for the analysis of content of all sorts. Humanity seems to value/find useful, a certain sector of this histogram. The reason for this appears to supervene on biological imperatives for survival. These commitments are now put under pressure due to an increase in variety and complexity in personal and societal narratives, causing an unease about the future. Research limitations/implications – This paper formulates the relevant moral questions by providing a structure within to ask them. Answering these questions is for another time. Practical implications – The histogram helps situate various degrees of content organization and is thus a useful tool for analyzing content. It could lead to something akin to Birkhoff's Aesthetic Measure, but for content of all sorts rather than just aesthetic objects. Originality/value – The format is singular for a journal article. The article presents an overview of the select collections of experiences of the U.S. Peace Corps which aim to educate the general public about Peace Corps and its values. The force of returned Peace Corps Volunteers (RPCVs) which are involved in collecting and preserving the record is as diverse as the experiences of the Peace Corps. RPCVs founded the Committee for a Museum of the Peace Corps Experience in 1999 in Portland, Oregon.

Welcome to our first Issue of Children Australia for 2018. We hope you have had a wonderful Christmas and entered the New Year with energy and enthusiasm for the challenges ahead. We also welcome back many of our Editorial Consultants and especially want to make our new members of the team feel engaged in the journal's activities for 2018. One of our new Editorial Consultants is Shraddha Kapoor who is Associate Professor at Department of Human Development and Childhood Studies, Lady Irwin College, University of Delhi. Dr Neerja Sharma, now retired, who has supported Children Australia for some years, was Shraddha's Professor before becoming her colleague and now a dear friend. Shraddha herself has been teaching in the department for last 27 years in the subjects of developmental psychology, child development, wellbeing, family and gender. This paper questions the significance and meaning behind the Byzantine legends of Jewish image desecration between the sixth and tenth centuries. EDITOR'S SUMMARY In a search for classic works on information architecture, Joyce's Ulysses and Richard Saul Wurman's The City, Form and Intent are each compared internally across different versions and considered in terms of content, context and user. Each author modified readers' experiences through changes in the content and physical form of their works. Wurman's 1963 work, a loose-leaf collection reflecting architecture through clay models of cities, was redone in 1974 with the same content but different physical presentation. Joyce's Ulysses was marked by variations across versions, with omissions, additions and typographic errors carried inconsistently through editions, leaving the author's intended meaning ambiguous. The context of Wurman's work was the very early stage in the author's career. The context of production of Ulysses involved composition, editing, publishing, correction and republishing across multiple channels, making consideration of the totality of the editions key to understanding the information architecture of the work. Users of Wurman's original print work exalted it, while users of a 2014 spin-off web project see it from a different perspective. Similarly, the user experience for Ulysses varies widely, depending largely on which edition is read. The analysis and internal comparison of the two works highlight the importance of both content knowledge and technical skill throughout any information architecture project.
