Leishmaniasis is a chronic infectious disease caused by different Leishmania species. Global occurrences of this disease are primarily limited to tropical and subtropical regions. Treatments are available; however, patients complain of side effects. Different species of plants have been screened as a potential source of new drugs against leishmaniasis. In this study, we investigated the antileishmanial activity of cilantro (Coriandrum sativum) essential oil and its main components: (E)-2-undecenal, (E)-2-decenal, (E)-2-dodecenal, decanal, dodecanal, and tetradecanal. The essential oil of C. sativum leaves inhibits growth of Leishmani donovani promastigotes in culture with an IC50 of 26.58 ± 6.11 µmL The aliphatic aldehydes (E)-2-decenal (7.85 ± 0.28 µg/mL), (E)-2-undecenal (2.81 ± 0.21 µg/mL), and (E)-2-dodecenal (4.35 ± 0.15µg/mL), all isolated from C. sativum essential oil, are effective inhibitors of in vitro cultures of L donovani promastigotes. Aldehydes (E)-2-decenal, (E)-2-undecenal, and (E)-2-dodecenal were also evaluated against axenic amastigotes and IC50 values were determined to be 2.47 ± 0.25 µg/mL, 1.25 ± 0.11 µg/mL, and 4.78 ± 1.12 µg/mL, respectively. (E)-2-Undecenal and (E)-2-dodecenal demonstrated IC50 values of 5.65 ± 0.19 µg/mL and 9.60 ± 0.89 µg/mL, respectively, against macrophage amastigotes. An improved strategy for the quality evaluation of proprietary Chinese medicines (PCM) in complex matrices is presented. It involves the simultaneous separating and displaying of multi-chemical classes and analytes within a single chromatographic elution. The developed fingerprints have the properties of better coverage of multi-chemical classes among the composing herbs. This comprehensive and more facile approach was illustrated for Lemai Keli, a commonly used PCM listed in the Chinese Pharmacopoeia with highly complex analytical matrices. Ten marker compounds belonging to monoterpene glycosides, chalcone glycosides, phenolic acids and phenolic carboxylic aldehyde groups of the analytes together with three common chromatographic peaks were successively separated and displayed within the chromatographic window as a unique HPLC-PAD fingerprint. Rigorous method validation data demonstrated the suitability of the current method for quality assessment purposes in a highly complex PCM matrix. Additional chemometric treatment further demonstrated the uniqueness of the developed fingerprint, with a distinctive chemical profile compared to a highly similar PCM formulation (Kangen Karyu) from which it was considered to be impossible to differentiate when using the conventional single marker approach. Oleocanthal is a bioactive compound from olive oil. It has attracted considerable attention as it is anti-inflammatory, antiproliferative, and has been shown to possess neuroprotective properties in vitro and in vivo. Delineated from its polyphenolic structure, the aim of this study was to characterize oleocanthal towards estrogenic properties. This might contribute to partly explain the beneficial effects described for the Mediterranean diet. Estrogenic properties of oleocanthal were assessed by different methods: a) stimulation of reporter gene activity in MVLN or RNDA cells either expressing estrogen receptor α or β, b) stimulation of luciferase reporter gene activity in U2OS osteosarcoma cells expressing estrogen receptor α or β, and c) elucidation of the impact on estradiol-induced gene expression in U2OS cells transduced with both estrogen receptors. Depending on the cell line origin, oleocanthal inhibited luciferase activity (MVLN, U2OS-estrogen receptor β) or weakly induced reporter gene activity at 10 μM in U2OS-estrogen receptor α cells. However, oleocanthal inhibited stimulation of luciferase activity by estradiol from both estrogen receptors. Oleocanthal, if given alone, did not stimulate gene expression in U2OS cells, but it significantly modulated the response of estradiol. Oleocanthal enhanced the effect of estradiol on the regulation of those genes, which are believed to be regulated through heterodimeric estrogen receptors. As the estrogenic response pattern of oleocanthal is rather unique, we compared the results obtained with oleacein. Oleocanthal binds to both estrogen receptors inducing estradiol-agonistic or antiagonistic effects depending on the cell line. With an increasing prevalence of renewables used as binders in panelboard products, it is of interest to know how these renewables may impact manufacturing environments and product performance. In this study, soy and zein proteins together with a kraft lignin and condensed tannin extract have been evaluated for contributions to volatile organic compounds arising in press emissions from processing hardwood veneer plywood. Analysis revealed aldehydes tended to dominate press emissions, with both proteinaceous materials producing significantly higher acetaldehyde and hexaldehyde emissions relative to the wood veneer used. Other aldehydes, including formaldehyde, valeraldehyde, and propionaldehyde, were also produced but in relatively lower quantities. The use of polyphenolics led to lower formaldehyde content in press emissions with tannin, also reducing acetaldehyde and other aldehydes in press emissions.
