• Direct input-to-output connections (DIOCs) are introduced into the Elman neural network. • We experimentally show that DIOCs significantly improve the accuracy of stock index forecasting. • We discuss why DIOCs should benefit all types of neural networks for classification or regression in most cases. The Elman neural network (ElmanNN) is well-known for its capability of processing dynamic information, which has led to successful applications in stock forecasting. In this paper, we introduce direct input-to-output connections (DIOCs) into the ElmanNN and show that the proposed Elman neural network with DIOCs (Elman-DIOCs) significantly out-performs the original ElmanNN without such DIOCs. Four different global stock indices, i.e., the Shanghai Stock Exchange (SSE) Composite Index, the Korea Stock Price Index (KOSPI), the Nikkei 225 Index (Nikkei225), and the Standard & Poor's 500 Index (SPX), are used to demonstrate the affecacy of the Elman-DIOCs in time-series prediction. We systematically evaluate 8 models, depending whether or not there are hidden layer biases, whether or not there are output layer biases, and whether or not there are DIOCs. The experimental results show that DIOCs lead to much better prediction accuracy, while requiring fewer than a half of the hidden neurons. Take the SPX index, for example - the root mean squared error (RMSE) and the mean absolute error (MAE) of the Elman-DIOCs are improved by 44.2 % and 41.1 % , respectively, compared to the ElmanNN, and 65.6 % and 60.8 % , respectively, compared to the multi-layer perceptron (MLP). We argue that (1) DIOCs can always help to improve accuracy, while reducing network complexity and computational burden, as long as the problem at hand (either regression or classification) has linear components, and (2) most real-world applications contain linear components. Therefore DIOCs will be almost always beneficial in any types of neural networks for classification or regression. This paper explores the potential role of the U.S. in improving relations between North and South Korea. In spring of 2000, North Korean leader Kim Jong II surprised the world by agreeing to meet with South Korean President Kim Dae Jung in the first North-South summit held since the division of the Korean Peninsula in 1945. The conventional explanation for the North's sudden reversal is that Pyongyang was desperate for economic assistance from Seoul. Kim Jong's central objective is the normalization of economic and political relations with the U.S., accompanied by a peace settlement formally ending the Korean War. North Korea has been pursuing normalization in vain since 1994, when it agreed to freeze its production of plutonium for nuclear weapons. The most intractable issue blocking a stable rapprochement is how to wind down the military tensions at the 38th parallel. This issue involves the U.S. directly because its 37,000 military personnel and 100 late-model combat aircraft stationed in Korea, together with its nuclear umbrella over the South, tilt the North-South military balance in favor of Seoul. As for the rationale that U.S. forces help stabilize Northeast Asia, the Pentagon's plans to use Korea as a base for military operations elsewhere in Asia could well aggravate regional tensions. In South Korea, as in the U.S., opposition to compromise is driven by a politically powerful military-industrial complex, which includes 83 defense contractors producing 119 types of defense equipment in 130 factories, many of them closely tied to U.S. defense firms.

This article reports that the ethical concerns of a different kind are jeopardising plans for a World Stem Cell Hub to share lines of human embryonic stem cells (ESCs). Plans for the hub were unveiled last month by Woo Suk Hwang of Seoul National University in South Korea, who shot to fame through his work on deriving human ESCs from cloned embryos. Hwang rejected the accusation. But now his main U.S. collaborator, Gerald Schatten of the University of Pittsburgh, says he will no longer work with Hwang, after reviewing new evidence on the source of the eggs.

A study conducted by researchers at Namseoul University in South Korea aimed to identify the risk factors and predictive models for triple-negative breast cancer (TNBC) and non-triple-negative breast cancer (non-TNBC) using Korean cancer statistics. The study analyzed data from 2,045 breast cancer cases and found that TNBC accounted for 12.4% of the cases, with the highest incidence in patients under 39 years old and over 70 years old. Tumors larger than 2 cm and stage IV cancer were also prevalent. The study concluded that early health check-up programs should be implemented for individuals in their 40s and 50s with a high prevalence of TNBC, and neoadjuvant therapy should be prioritized for TNBC cases. The article reveals that the National Agricultural Cooperative Federation (NACF) has found an innovative way around Korea's dollar funding crisis to price a $100 million three year bond. Three consecutive online surveys conducted in South Korea during 2000-2001 showed that e-mail was the preferred communication service on the stationary Internet, whereas SMS was more preferred service on the mobile Internet in the Communication Domain.

Some Scientists aim to discover the essential genes needed to support a simple living cell, stitch together this" minimal genome" and then press the on switch. Building a genome from scratch could be seen as an extension of existing genetic engineering techniques. But other researchers want to go further and re-engineer life using chemicals not chosen by evolution. Discovering and building the minimal genome will revolutionize our understanding of cells and whole organisms.
