The study analyses 19 years of hourly quantitative precipitation estimates (RADKLIM-RW) concerning the spatial scaling behaviour of extreme rainfall for Germany as well as general heavy rainfall patterns. Four regions with the same size of 256 km × 256 km were selected with varying characteristics. For each region, spatial rainfall maxima for different aggregation steps with box length of 2, 4, 8, 16, 32, 64, and 128 km were retrieved using sliding and fixed window methods. Rainfall was classified with two parameters into patterns dominated by convection or advection, respectively. Based on the calculated spatialmaxima, potential maximum rain rates were extrapolated for sub-pixel scale. Though the power laws of the resulting scaling relationship have a very good fit, no mono-scale power law could be derived from the data due to different rainfall mechanisms on different spatial scales. Typical power laws exist for more convective characteristics up to a scale of 8 km box length and for more advective characteristics with larger box lengths. A regional power law for maxima of convective rainfall could be used to statically refine the radar resolution to 250m or even 125m box length. However, when scaled to smaller box lengths or to the size of a Hellmann gauge (200 cm2) the values become increasingly unrealistic. The results indicate that radar derived areal precipitation values are limited to the radar scale (here 1 km2), despite the fact that they are scaled to fit observed values from rain gauges. A highly linear active mixer in Gallium Nitride on Silicon (GaN-on-Si) monolithic microwave integrated circuit (MMIC) technology, operating in Ka-band for radar applications is introduced. In designing a mm-wave ultra-wideband pulse-Doppler radar IC, one of the main challenges encountered is to reduce the high power consumption of the circuitries in the IC. A direct-RF receiver can be used in the radar’s design to reduce the radar’s power consumption. However, a digitizer that can directly digitize mm-wave ultra-wideband radar pulses is needed to implement such a receiver. This work presents the design of such a digitizer, which comprises several multi-pass sub-ADCs that operate together. Each multi-pass sub-ADC works fundamentally like a flash ADC but comprises one comparator only. A test chip containing a 6-bit prototype of the digitizer is fabricated in a 40 nm CMOS technology. The prototype consumes 19.7 mW when operated at 4 GSa/s and can operate with input signal frequencies of up to 64 GHz while achieving a −1.7/−6 dBFS SNDR of 21.1/22.8 dB at 60 GHz (the corresponding FoM is 532/434 fJ/c-s). The digitizer has a relatively high effective parallel-equivalent input impedance at 60 GHz, which, in a radar IC implementation, allows it to be driven with a relatively low power-consuming 60 GHz RF buffer. Compared with the traditional pulse repetition interval (PRI) parameters, PRI pattern can describe the temporal characteristics of radar more completely, and the method based on PRI pattern is more suitable for tasks of deinterleaving and identification. Therefore, effective reconstruction of PRI pattern is an important task in radar signal processing. However, previous PRI pattern reconstruction methods either set too many subjective parameters or have high requirements for the number of pulses, making it not very practical for analyzing actual radar signals. In this paper, the temporal rule of pulse train is modeled from the perspective of radar timing state switching. Then the pulses of different timing states in the pulse train are clustered based on state merging algorithms in model learning. The transitions between different timing states are established based on the pulse sets obtained by clustering. Finally, the PRI pattern of radar is reconstructed after processing interferential pulses and missing pulses. Based on the above method, this paper further proposes a method to reconstruct PRI patterns of all radars in interleaved pulse trains. In this paper, we investigate the adaptive target detection problem for a collocated frequency diverse array multiple-input multiple-output (FDA-MIMO) radar in the presence of mainlobe deceptive jamming and partially homogeneous noise with an unknown covariance matrix and scaling factor. Precisely, we establish a received signal model that includes the true target and false counterparts echoes in the presence of Gaussian noise (it includes thermal noise, interference suppression, and clutter after range compensation.). Furthermore, we consider that the range information of the true target and mainlobe deceptive targets is not identical. Therefore, we project the corresponding transmit steering vectors onto different subspaces with known subspace matrices but unknown coordinates. On the other hand, the true and false targets' receive steering vectors are considered to be from the same subspace. Finally, following the generalized likelihood ratio test (GLRT), the Rao and the Wald criteria, we design three adaptive detectors with two-step criteria, i.e., TGLRT, TRao, and TWald. We note that the proposed detectors maintain a constant false alarm rate (CFAR) against the scaling factor and the noise covariance matrix. Tornadic storms with a tornado intensity of F2 or stronger on the Fujita scale that occurred in recent years (between 2013 and 2020) in Germany were analysed in detail. The 20 tornadoes, which developed on 17 different days, occurred in various parts of Germany. The majority of the analysed tornadoes occurred from May to early September. The other four events are typical cold-season cases that differ from the warm-season cases in some aspects which are discussed where applicable. Similarities and differences of the prevailing synoptic and mesoscale conditions are assessed in addition to the convective environment of the events. On the majority of the analysed tornadic days, the event happened on the forward flank of a long wave trough that was slowly propagating eastward. The second typical situation is a short wave trough passing rather fast over the area of interest from West to East. All cold-season cases occurred in high shear, low CAPE environments. Furthermore, the type of convection is analysed using a multi-source approach to best characterise the events. For this purpose, radar reflectivity and rotation data were combined with lightning detection in order to analyse the tornadic storms with respect to storm mode and storm evolution as well as lightning and rotation characteristics. The most common convective mode is linearly organised convection followd by multicellular storms. In many of the warm-season cases, radar radial wind data showed a persistent rotation track. The lightning activity of the warm-season season tornadic storms was high. In many cases, a lightning jump occurred between 5 and 120 minutes before the event. [ABSTRACT FROM AUTHOR]

This paper presents a primary impulse-radio ultra-wideband (IR-UWB) radar system for real-time short-range localization, e.g., for smart traffic and automotive applications. The radar system consisting of an integrated radar transceiver (TRx) using 45-nm SOI CMOS technology and an FPGA-based signal processing. The efficient transmitter (Tx), which complies with the regulations for both indoor and outdoor applications, modulates and emits a seventh derivative Gaussian pulse. In the receiver (Rx), echo signals will be amplified and sampled in real-time. The echo pulses are recovered by signal processing hardware on the FPGA, which is also used to perform simple classification tasks like user warning. The proposed radar system achieves very high signal-to-noise ratio (SNR) and range precision. Frequency diverse array multiple-input multiple-output (FDA-MIMO) radar can produce time-stationary range-angle dependent beampattern. The problem with these beampatterns is the repeating lobes in the angle-range domain. Different methods are proposed to obtain better beampattern in terms of grating lobe and sidelobe suppression by using frequency offsets. However, these methods mostly choose the frequency offsets using an analytic expression and do not offer a control on the resulting range beampattern. In this paper, a new method for transmit beampattern design in range is presented. This method transfers the design problem into a tangential space and solves the problem using complex manifolds through an optimization procedure. The proposed approach considers amplitude tapering in the transmitter antenna elements and the practical instrumented range of the radar. Range beampattern constraints can be defined conveniently leading to an effective design process. Detecting moving targets remains a significant challenge in radar applications, particularly in dense multipath environments where signal complexities present formidable obstacles. However, the application of time reversal (TR) technology offers promising prospects for enhancing target detection capabilities. Utilizing this technology, we propose a detection algorithm tailored specifically for a moving target, designed exclusively for array antennas (AA) operating in dense multipath environments with dynamic channel variations. We establish an AA-TR signal model within this framework and derive the AA-TR likelihood ratio test (AA-TR-LRT) detector. To assess the effectiveness of our proposed approach, we also develop the AA conventional LRT (AA-C-LRT) detector as a comparative benchmark. Comprehensive numerical tests consistently verify the outstanding effectiveness of our detection algorithm, underscoring its precision in detecting moving targets, particularly in highly complex multipath scenarios with varying channels. As we all know, conformal arrays can provide smaller radar cross-section (RCS) and greater angle coverage than conventional linear arrays and planar arrays. In this paper, we develop a robust adaptive beamforming (RAB) approach using the cylindrical uniform conformal array. Firstly, we reconstruct the interference-plus-noise covariance matrix (INCM) by estimating the steering vectors (SVs) and powers of all interferences. Specifically, we estimate the interference SVs by exploiting the MUSIC spectrum and corrected by solving a minimization problem based on the orthogonality between the interferences SVs and noise subspace, and the interferences powers are further estimated by utilizing the non-correlation between different signal SVs. With the reconstructed INCM, the SV of the signal-of-interest is estimated by solving a quadratically constrained quadratic programming problem. Elliptic positioning (EP) has recently emerged as a prevailing subject within localization research, holding significant relevance for a variety of multistatic systems including distributed multiple-input multiple-output radar, sonar, and wireless sensor networks. Mathematically, EP refers to estimating the location of a signal-reflecting/relaying target from the bistatic range (BR) measurements acquired by employing multiple spatially separated transmitters and receivers. BRs, as a specific type of range-based sensor observations, will however be positively biased when non-line-of-sight (NLOS) signal propagation occurs. Such a phenomenon is widespread across various localization scenarios, which can seriously degrade the positioning accuracy if not properly addressed. Through the alternating direction method of multipliers, this contribution introduces a computationally efficient iterative algorithm designed for error-mitigated EP in NLOS environments. In addition to target position coordinates, we incorporate a non-negatively bounded balancing parameter into the formulation and perform joint estimation, thereby achieving NLOS bias error reduction in a simple yet impactful manner. A new design method of shared signal is proposed for the Frequency Diversity Array (FDA) joint radar jamming system (JRJS). Each array element of FDA JRJS transmits the same shared signal, converts the beam pattern synthesis into spectrum design through the mapping relationship between beam pattern and shared signal frequency, and focuses energy on detecting and jamming targets. The essence of the jamming caused by the shared signal to the enemy radar is the mismatch of the frequency modulation slope, which forms the dense jamming, improves the detection threshold of the enemy radar's constant false-alarm rate (CFAR), and protects its platform from detection. The simulation results show that the shared signal can cause jamming to the enemy radar while aiming the beam at the detection target and the jamming target, which realizes the integration of detection and jamming.
