1. Tuition and Fees at Virginia's State-Supported Colleges and Universities, 2015-16

Abstract: Analysis of tuition and fees at public colleges and universities in Virginia must include a discussion of the funding received from the General Assembly. The period covered by this report represents a particularly complicated scenario that impacted not just higher education but all entities that receive general fund tax dollars in Virginia. The first goal of the Virginia Plan for Higher Education, the statewide strategic plan for higher education recently developed by the State Council of Higher Education for Virginia (SCHEV) and endorsed by the legislature, is to provide affordable higher-education access for all. The alignment of state appropriations, financial aid and tuition and fees will be critical to achieving this goal. This report focuses on tuition and fees for in-state undergraduates and provides a summary of the following four items: (1) board-approved tuition and fee increases for the 2015-16 academic year; (2) tuition and fee trends in Virginia over the past 25 years; (3) the cost-sharing relationship between the state and students; and (4) trends in tuition increases nationally. The appendices provide comparisons of changes in tuition and fees for student groups including in-state undergraduate, out-of-state undergraduate, in-state graduate, out-of-state graduate, in-state first professional, and out-of-state first professional. 2. Approximate Relational Reasoning for Quantum Programs

Abstract: Quantum computation is inevitably subject to imperfections in its implementation. These imperfections arise from various sources, including environmental noise at the hardware level and the introduction of approximate implementations by quantum algorithm designers, such as lower-depth computations. Given the significant advantage of relational logic in program reasoning and the importance of assessing the robustness of quantum programs between their ideal specifications and imperfect implementations, we design a proof system to verify the approximate relational properties of quantum programs. We demonstrate the effectiveness of our approach by providing the first formal verification of the renowned low-depth approximation of the quantum Fourier transform. Furthermore, we validate the approximate correctness of the repeat-until-success algorithm. From the technical point of view, we develop approximate quantum coupling as a fundamental tool to study approximate relational reasoning for quantum programs, a novel generalization of the widely used approximate probabilistic coupling in probabilistic programs, answering a previously posed open question for projective predicates.

3. Tuition and Fees at Virginia's State-Supported Colleges and Universities, 2010-11

Abstract: The Commonwealth of Virginia, like the rest of the nation, has endured the effects of an historical economic recession for the past three years. While Virginia is perhaps no longer in recession, the still fragile economy is a major cause for concern. Shrinking tax revenues and the need to balance the state's budget led the 2010 General Assembly to reduce state support for public higher education by more than $400 million or 27% by FY2012 when compared to the original FY2010 budgets. Higher education institutions are facing great pressure to increase tuition in an attempt to bolster the system from the erosion of state support and ensure the delivery of high quality instructional services expected of Virginia colleges and universities. This report focuses on tuition and fees for in-state undergraduates and provides a summary of: (1) board-approved tuition and fee increases for the 2010-11 academic year; (2) tuition and fee trends in Virginia over the past 25 years; (3) the cost-sharing relationship between the state and students; and (4) trends in tuition increases nationally. 4. Database Selection for Processing k Nearest Neighbors Queries in Distributed Environments.

Abstract: This paper considers the processing of digital library queries, consisting of a text component and a structured component in distributed environments. The paper concentrates on the processing of the structured component of a distributed query. A method is proposed to identify the databases that are likely to be useful for processing any given query and to determine the tuples from each useful site which are necessary for answering the query. In this way, both the communication cost and the local processing costs are saved. One common characteristic of these "k" nearest neighbors queries is that it is not necessary to obtain all the "k" nearest neighbors; it is often sufficient to get most of the "k" neighbors. Experimental results are provided to demonstrate that most of the "k" nearest neighbors (85% to 100%) are obtained using this approach. An average accuracy rate of 94.7% is achieved when the 20 closest neighbors are desired. (Contains 15 references.) (AEF)

Abstract: Kelembagaan masyarakat adat Waropen secara legal berdasarkan peraturan perundang-undangan belum terbentuk di Provinsi Papua Barat. Untuk itu, kegiatan ini menjadi urgensi yang harus dilakukan dalam rangka penguatan dan penataan kelembagaan adat. Tujuan kegiatan ini adalah untuk (1) membangun kesadaran dan solidaritas sosial; (2) mendorong kohesivitas sosial yang harmoni; (3) membentuk organisasi modern berbasis adat; (4) membangun organisasi sebagai benteng penerus nilai dan tradisi luhur; dan (5) ikut berpartisipasi dalam pembangunan. Luarannya adalah diharapkan berkontribusi dalam (1) memahami wilayah dan karateristik budaya Waropen yang sama dan berbeda pada setiap kampung, keret dan rumah; dan (2) menyusun kelengkapan organisasi lembaga adat dan kemasyarakatan dalam mendukung pelestarian adat dan budaya Waropen. Mitra dalam kegiatan ini adalah (1) Pemerintah Provinsi Papua Barat, (2) Pemerintah Kabupaten Waropen, (3) Pemerintah Kabupaten Manokwari, dan (4) Dewan Adat Daerah Suku Waropen Provinsi Papua. Abstract: Personalized federated learning PFL jointly trains a variety of local models through balancing between knowledge sharing across clients and model personalization per client This paper addresses PFL via explicit disentangling latent representations into two parts to capture the shared knowledge and client specific personalization which leads to more reliable and effective PFL The disentanglement is achieved by a novel Federated Dual Variational Autoencoder FedDVA which employs two encoders to infer the two types of representations FedDVA can produce a better understanding of the trade off between global knowledge sharing and local personalization in PFL Moreover it can be integrated with existing FL methods and turn them into personalized models for heterogeneous downstream tasks Extensive experiments validate the advantages caused by disentanglement and show that models trained with disentangled representations substantially outperform those vanilla methods

7. Dual Personalization on Federated Recommendation

Abstract: Federated recommendation is a new Internet service architecture that aims to provide privacy-preserving recommendation services in federated settings. Existing solutions are used to combine distributed recommendation algorithms and privacy-preserving mechanisms. Thus it inherently takes the form of heavyweight models at the server and hinders the deployment of on-device intelligent models to end-users. This paper proposes a novel Personalized Federated Recommendation (PFedRec) framework to learn many user-specific lightweight models to be deployed on smart devices rather than a heavyweight model on a server. Moreover, we propose a new dual personalization mechanism to effectively learn fine-grained personalization on both users and items. The overall learning process is formulated into a unified federated optimization framework. Specifically, unlike previous methods that share exactly the same item embeddings across users in a federated system, dual personalization allows mild finetuning of item embeddings for each user to generate user-specific views for item representations which can be integrated into existing federated recommendation methods to gain improvements immediately. Experiments on multiple benchmark datasets have demonstrated the effectiveness of PFedRec and the dual personalization mechanism. Moreover, we provide visualizations and in-depth analysis of the personalization techniques in item embedding, which shed novel insights on the design of recommender systems in federated settings. Abstract: BACKGROUND: De novo missense variants in KCNQ5, encoding the voltage-gated K+ channel KV7.5, have been described to cause developmental and epileptic encephalopathy (DEE) or intellectual disability (ID). We set out to identify disease-related KCNQ5 variants in genetic generalized epilepsy (GGE) and their underlying mechanisms. METHODS: 1292 families with GGE were studied by next-generation sequencing. Whole-cell patch-clamp recordings, biotinylation and phospholipid overlay assays were performed in mammalian cells combined with homology modelling. FINDINGS: We identified three deleterious heterozygous missense variants, one truncation and one splice site alteration in five independent families with GGE with predominant absence seizures; two variants were also associated with mild to moderate ID. All missense variants displayed a strongly decreased current density indicating a loss-of-function (LOF). When mutant channels were co-expressed with wild-type (WT) KV7.5 or KV7.5 and KV7.3 channels, three variants also revealed a significant dominant-negative effect on WT channels. Other gating parameters were unchanged. Biotinylation assays indicated a normal surface expression of the variants. The R359C variant altered PI(4,5)P2-interaction. INTERPRETATION: Our study identified deleterious KCNQ5 variants in GGE, partially combined with mild to moderate ID. The disease mechanism is a LOF partially with dominant-negative effects through functional deficits. LOF of KV7.5 channels will reduce the M-current, likely resulting in increased excitability of KV7.5-expressing neurons. Further studies on network level are necessary to understand which circuits are affected and how this induces generalized seizures. 10. The QQUIC Transport Protocol: Quantum-Assisted UDP Internet Connections

Abstract: Quantum key distribution, initialized in 1984, is a commercialized secure communication method that enables two parties to produce a shared random secret key using quantum mechanics. We propose a QQUIC (Quantum-assisted Quick UDP Internet Connections) transport protocol, which modifies the well-known QUIC transport protocol by employing quantum key distribution instead of the original classical algorithms in the key exchange stage. Due to the provable security of quantum key distribution, the security of the QQUIC key does not depend on computational assumptions. It is possible that, surprisingly, QQUIC can reduce network latency in some circumstances even compared with QUIC. To achieve this, the attached quantum connections are used as the dedicated lines for key generation.

11. On incorrectness logic for Quantum programs

Abstract: Bug-catching is important for developing quantum programs. Motivated by the incorrectness logic for classical programs, we propose an incorrectness logic towards a logical foundation for static bug-catching in quantum programming. The validity of formulas in this logic is dual to that of quantum Hoare logics. We justify the formulation of validity by an intuitive explanation from a reachability point of view and a comparison against several alternative formulations. Compared with existing works focusing on dynamic analysis, our logic provides sound and complete arguments. We further demonstrate the usefulness of the logic by reasoning several examples, including Grover's search, quantum teleportation, and a repeat-until-success program. We also automate the reasoning procedure by a prototyped static analyzer built on top of the logic rules.

19. Elementary Teacher Educational Media Utilization and Production in Selected Silicon Valley Schools.

Abstract: Questionnaires were sent to teachers of grades K-6 in the Silicon Valley area in November 1990 to obtain current information on the utilization and production of media by teachers at this level. This report is based on usable survey instruments returned by 110 teachers, who represented more than 15 different elementary schools. This information was sought for use at San Jose State University, which requires all preservice teachers to take a three-semester unit course in instructional media and technology, and for later comparison with studies of media utilization by K-6 teachers in the Republic of China and Thailand. Individual items were ranked in terms of teacher utilization of media at each grade level. Items were then categorized and placed in related groupings: (1) microcomputers; (2) television (video) and film; (3) still projected media; (4) audio media; (5) models and mock-ups, dioramas, maps and globes, puppets, and field trips; (6) math manipulatives, games and simulations; (7) charts and posters; (8) display boards; (9) graphic and photographic media production and paper materials duplication; (10) centers; and (11) learner arrangements (large group, small group, cooperative learning, and individual self-study). Three figures display the frequency of media use or production activity in each of these categories for K-3 teachers, grade 4-6 teachers, and K-6 teachers. In addition, the Spearman-Brown rank-order correlation formula was used to determine correlation of rankings of media use by primary (K-3) and intermediate (4-6) teachers. Appendices contain lists of media utilized daily by K-6 teachers, as well as daily to weekly, weekly to monthly, monthly to yearly, and less than once a year. These lists are in rank order. (BBM)

20. Microwave heating in heterogeneous catalysis: Modelling and design of rectangular traveling-wave microwave reactor

Abstract: Microwave irradiation can intensify catalytic chemistry by selective and controlled microwave-catalytic packed-bed interaction. However, turning it to reality from laboratory to practical applications is hindered by challenges in the reactor design and scale-up. Here, we present a novel, rectangular traveling-wave microwave reactor (RTMR) and provide an easy-to-handle, 3-step design procedure of such reactor. The multiphysics model couples the electromagnetic field, heat transfer, and fluid dynamics in order to optimize the geometrical parameters and operational conditions for the microwave-assisted heterogeneous catalysis. The results show that the microwave energy input/output ports should be well-positioned and matched; otherwise, it would significantly decrease energy efficiency. In terms of microwave transmission, the RTMR presents a mix between the standing wave and the traveling-wave systems. 21. SecRSL: Security Separation Logic for C11 Release-Acquire Concurrency

Abstract: We present Security Relaxed Separation Logic (SecRSL), a separation logic for proving information-flow security of C11 programs in the Release-Acquire fragment with relaxed accesses. SecRSL is the first security logic that (1) supports weak-memory reasoning about programs in a high-level language; (2) inherits separation logic’s virtues of compositional, local reasoning about (3) expressive security policies like value-dependent classification. SecRSL is also, to our knowledge, the first security logic developed over an axiomatic memory model. Thus we also present the first definitions of information-flow security for an axiomatic weak memory model, against which we prove SecRSL sound. SecRSL ensures that programs satisfy a constant-time security guarantee, while being free of undefined behaviour. We apply SecRSL to implement and verify the functional correctness and constant-time security of a range of concurrency primitives, including a spinlock module, a mixed-sensitivity mutex, and multiple synchronous channel implementations. Empirical performance evaluations of the latter demonstrate SecRSL’s power to support the development of secure and performant concurrent C programs.

Abstract: Aim: The SAMe-TT2R2 score helps identify patients with atrial fibrillation (AF) likely to have poor anticoagulation control during anticoagulation with vitamin K antagonists (VKA) and those with scores >2 might be better managed with a target-specific oral anticoagulant (NOAC). We hypothesized that in clinical practice, VKAs may be prescribed less frequently to patients with AF and SAMe-TT2R2 scores >2 than to patients with lower scores. Methods and results: We analyzed the Phase III dataset of the Global Registry on Long-Term Oral Antithrombotic Treatment in Patients with Atrial Fibrillation (GLORIA-AF), a large, global, prospective global registry of patients with newly diagnosed AF and ≥1 stroke risk factor. We compared baseline clinical characteristics and antithrombotic prescriptions to determine the probability of the VKA prescription among anticoagulated patients with the baseline SAMe-TT2R2 score >2 and ≤ 2. Among 17,465 anticoagulated patients with AF, 4,828 (27.6%) patients were prescribed VKA and 12,637 (72.4%) patients an NOAC: 11,884 (68.0%) patients had SAMe-TT2R2 scores 0-2 and 5,581 (32.0%) patients had scores >2. The proportion of patients prescribed VKA was 28.0% among patients with SAMe-TT2R2 scores >2 and 27.5% in those with scores ≤2. Conclusions: The lack of a clear association between the SAMe-TT2R2 score and anticoagulant selection may be attributed to the relative efficacy and safety profiles between NOACs and VKAs as well as to the absence of trial evidence that an SAMe-TT2R2-guided strategy for the selection of the type of anticoagulation in NVAF patients has an impact on clinical outcomes of efficacy and safety. The latter hypothesis is currently being tested in a randomized controlled trial. It is caused by a sudden abnormal discharge of brain neurons leading to temporary dysfunction. In this regard, if seizures could be predicted a reasonable period of time before their occurrence, epilepsy patients could take precautions against them and improve their safety and quality of life. However, the potential that permutation entropy(PE) can be applied in human epilepsy prediction from intracranial electroencephalogram (iEEG) recordings remains unclear. Here, we described the novel application of PE to track the dynamical changes of human brain activity from iEEG recordings for the epileptic seizure prediction. The iEEG signals of 19 patients were obtained from the Epilepsy Centre at the University Hospital of Freiburg. After preprocessing, PE was extracted in a sliding time window, and a support vector machine (SVM) was employed to discriminate cerebral state. Then a two-step post-processing method was applied for the purpose of prediction. The results showed that we obtained an average sensitivity (SS) of 94% and false prediction rates (FPR) with 0.111 h−1. The best results with SS of 100% and FPR of 0 h−1 were achieved for some patients. The average prediction horizon was 61.93 min, leaving sufficient treatment time before a seizure. These results indicated that applying PE as a feature to extract information and SVM for classification could predict seizures, and the presented method shows great potential in clinical seizure prediction for human.

32. A Deep Learning Health Data Analysis Approach: Automatic 3D Prostate MR Segmentation with Densely-Connected Volumetric ConvNets

Automated prostate segmentation in 3D medical images play an important role in many clinical applications, such as diagnosis of prostatitis, prostate cancer and enlarged prostate. However, it is still a challenging task due to the complex background, lacking of clear boundary and various shape and texture between the slices. In this paper, we propose a novel 3D convolutional neural network with densely-connected layers to automatically segment the prostate from Magnetic Resonance(MR) images. Compared with other methods, our method has three compelling advantages. First, our model can effectively detect the prostate region in a volume-to-volume manner by utilizing the 3D convolution rather than the 3D convolution, which can fully exploit both spatial and region information. Second, the proposed network architecture alleviates the vanishing-gradient problem, strengthens the information propagation between layers, overcomes the problem of over-fitting and makes the network deeper by adopting a densely-connected manner. Third, besides the densely-connected manner inside each block, we also adopt the long connections strategy between blocks. We evaluate our proposed model on prostate dataset. The experimental results show that our model achieved significant segmentation results and outperformed other state-of-arts methods.

Abstract: Chronic hepatitis C virus (HCV) infection has been associated with an increased risk for cardiovascular disease (CVD). The recommended Pooled Cohort atherosclerotic cardiovascular disease (ASCVD) risk equation for estimation of 10-year CVD risk has not been validated in HCV-infected populations. We examined the performance of the ASCVD risk score in HCV-infected persons, using the national Electronically Retrieved Cohort of HCV Infected Veterans to derive a cohort of HCV-infected and uninfected subjects without baseline ASCVD, hepatitis B, or HIV infection, and with low-density lipoprotein cholesterol level<190 mg/dL. Performance of the ASCVD risk equation was assessed by Cox proportional hazard regression, C-statistics and Hosmer-Lemeshow statistic. The cohort included 70 490 HCV-infected and 97 766 HCV-uninfected men with mean age of 55 years, 56% White and 29% Black. Incident CVD event rates were similar between the two groups (13.2 and 13.4 events/1000 person-years), with a higher incidence of coronary heart disease events in the HCV-uninfected group and of stroke events in the HCV-infected group. Adjusting for ASCVD risk score, HCV infection was associated with higher risk for an ASCVD event in the subgroup with baseline ASCVD risk ≥7.5% (HR: 1.19, P<.0001). C-statistics were poor in both the HCV-infected and uninfected groups (0.60 and 0.61, respectively). By Hosmer-Lemeshow test, the ASCVD risk equation overestimated risk amongst lower risk patients and underestimated risk amongst higher risk patients in both the HCV-infected and uninfected groups. Further investigation is needed to determine whether a modified equation to accurately predict ASCVD risk in HCV-infected persons is warranted.

Abstract: Background GLORIA-AF (Global Registry on Long-Term Oral Antithrombotic Treatment in Patients with Atrial Fibrillation) is a prospective, global registry program describing antithrombotic treatment patterns in patients with newly diagnosed nonvalvular atrial fibrillation at risk of stroke. Phase 2 began when dabigatran, the first non–vitamin K antagonist oral anticoagulant (NOAC), became available. Objectives This study sought to describe phase 2 baseline data and compare these with the pre-NOAC era collected during phase 1. Methods During phase 2, 15,641 consenting patients were enrolled (November 2011 to December 2014); 15,092 were eligible. This pre-specified cross-sectional analysis describes eligible patients’ baseline characteristics. Atrial fibrillation disease characteristics, medical outcomes, and concomitant diseases and medications were collected. Data were analyzed using descriptive statistics. Results Of the total patients, 45.5% were female; median age was 71 (interquartile range: 64, 78) years. Patients were from Europe (47.1%), North America (22.5%), Asia (20.3%), Latin America (6.0%), and the Middle East/Africa (4.0%). Most had high stroke risk (CHA2DS2-VASc [Congestive heart failure, Hypertension, Age ≥75 years, Diabetes mellitus, previous Stroke, Vascular disease, Age 65 to 74 years, Sex category] score ≥2; 86.1%); 13.9% had moderate risk (CHA2DS2-VASc = 1). Overall, 79.9% received oral anticoagulants, of whom 47.6% received NOAC and 32.3% vitamin K antagonists (VKA); 12.1% received antiplatelet agents; 7.8% received no antithrombotic treatment. For comparison, the proportion of phase 1 patients (of N = 1,063 all eligible) prescribed VKA was 32.8%, acetylsalicylic acid 41.7%, and no therapy 20.2%. Abstract: Background We conducted a randomized, phase II, multicenter study to evaluate the anti-epidermal growth factor receptor (EGFR) mAb panitumumab (P) in combination with chemoradiotherapy (CRT) with standard-dose capecitabine as neoadjuvant treatment for wild-type KRAS locally advanced rectal cancer (LARC). Patients and methods Patients with wild-type KRAS, T3-4 and/or N+ LARC were randomly assigned to receive CRT with or without P (6 mg/kg). The primary end-point was pathological near-complete or complete tumor response (pNC/CR), defined as grade 3 (pNCR) or 4 (pCR) histological regression by Dworak classification (DC). Results Forty of 68 patients were randomly assigned to P + CRT and 28 to CRT. pNC/CR was achieved in 21 patients (53%) treated with P + CRT [95% confidence interval (CI) 36%-69%] versus 9 patients (32%) treated with CRT alone (95% CI: 16%-52%). pCR was achieved in 4 (10%) and 5 (18%) patients, and pNCR in 17 (43%) and 4 (14%) patients. In immunohistochemical analysis, most DC 3 cells were not apoptotic. The most common grade ≥3 toxic effects in the P + CRT/CRT arm were diarrhea (10%/6%) and anastomotic leakage (15%/4%). Conclusions The addition of panitumumab to neoadjuvant CRT in patients with KRAS wild-type LARC resulted in a high pNC/CR rate, mostly grade 3 DC. Abstract: Ultrathin Li4Ti5O12 (LTO) nanosheets with ordered microstructures were prepared via a polyether-assisted hydrothermal process. Pluronic P123, a polyether, can impede the growth of Li2TiO3 in the precursor and also act as a structure-directing agent to facilitate the (Li1.81H0.19)Ti2O5·2H2O precursor to form the LTO nanosheets with the ordered microstructure. Moreover, the addition of P123 can suppress the stacking of LTO nanosheets during calcining of the precursor, and the thickness of the nanosheets can be controlled to be about 4 nm. The microstructure of the as-prepared ultrathin and ordered nanosheets is helpful for Li(+) or Na(+) diffusion and charge transfer through the particles. Therefore, the ultrathin P123-assisted LTO (P-LTO) nanosheets show a rate capability much higher than that of the LTO sample without P123 in a Li battery with over 130 mAh g(-1) of capacity remaining at the 64C rate. For intercalation of larger size Na(+) ions, the P-LTO still exhibits a capacity of 115 mAh g(-1) at a current rate of 10 C and a capacity retention of 96% after 400 cycles.

Abstract: Background Knowledge about determinants of quality of life (QoL) in eosinophilic oesophagitis (EoO) patients helps to identify patients at risk of experiencing poor QoL and to tailor therapeutic interventions accordingly. Aim To evaluate the impact of symptom severity, endoscopic and histological activity on EoE-specific QoL in adult EoE patients. Methods Ninety-eight adult EoE patients were prospectively included (64% male, median age 39 years). Patients completed two validated instruments to assess EoE-specific QoL (EoO-QoL-A) and symptom severity (adult EoE activity index patient-reported outcome) and then underwent esophagogastroduodenoscopy with biopsy sampling. Physicians reported standardised information on EoE-associated endoscopic and histological alterations. The Spearman's rank correlation coefficient was calculated to determine the relationship between QoL and symptom severity. Linear regression and analysis of variance was used to quantify the extent to which variations in severity of EoE symptoms, endoscopic and histological findings explain variations in QoL. Results Quality of life strongly correlated with symptom severity (r = 0.610, P < 0.001). While the variation in severity of symptoms, endoscopic and histological findings alone explained 38%, 35% and 22% of the variability in EoE-related QoL, respectively, these together explained 60% of variation. Symptom severity explained 18-35% of the variation in each of the five QoL subscale scores. Conclusions Eosinophilic oesophagitis symptom severity and biological disease activity determine QoL in adult patients with eosinophilic oesophagitis. Therefore, reduction in both eosinophilic oesophagitis symptoms as well as biological disease activity is essential for improvement of QoL in adult patients. Clinicaltrials.gov number, NCT00939263.

Abstract: We model the injection of elastic waves into a ferromagnetic film (F) by a nonmagnetic transducer (N). We compare the configurations in which the magnetization is normal and parallel to the wave propagation. The lack of axial symmetry in the former results in the emergence of evanescent interface states. We compute the energy-flux transmission across the N|F interface and sound-induced magnetization dynamics in the ferromagnet. We demonstrate that strong coupling can be realized not only for the ferromagnetic resonance mode, but also for spin-wave resonances; the coupling strengths are mode dependent and decrease with increasing mode index. 42. Thermodynamic magnon recoil for domain wall motion

Abstract: We predict a thermodynamic magnon recoil effect for domain wall motions in the presence of temperature gradients. All current thermodynamic theories assert that a magnetic domain wall must move toward the hotter side, based on equilibrium thermodynamic arguments. Microscopic calculations, on the other hand, show that a domain wall can move either along or against the direction of heat currents, depending on how strong the magnonic heat currents are reflected by the domain wall. We have resolved the inconsistency between these two approaches by augmenting the theory in the presence of thermal gradients by incorporating in the free energy of domain walls a heat current term present in nonequilibrium steady states. Abstract: Recent observations of the geometries of growing and collapsing bubbles over axisymmetric headforms have revealed the complexity of the "microfluidmechanics" associated with these flows (Hamilton et al., 1982, Briancon Marjollet and Franc, 1990, Ceccio and Brennen, 1991). Among the complex features observed were bubble to bubble interaction, cavitation noise generation and bubble interaction with the boundary layer which leads to the shearing of the underside of the bubble and alters the collapsing process. All of these previous tests were performed on small headform sizes. The focus of this research is to determine the dynamics governing the growth and collapse of traveling bubbles and to analyze the scaling effects due to variations in geometry size, Reynolds number and cavitation number. For this effect, cavitating flows over Schiebe headforms of different sizes (5.08cm, 25.4cm and 50.8cm in diameter) were studied in the David Taylor Large Cavitation Channel (LCC). This thesis presents the scaling effects captured on high-speed film and electrode sensors as well the noise signals generated during the collapse of the cavities. The influence of each of these parameters on the dynamics involved in the growth and collapse phases of the traveling bubble are presented, along with the acoustical impulse produced during the collapse of the bubble. In order to model and analyze the dynamics of the three-dimensional bubble deformation in the presence of the pressure field around the Schiebe headform, an unsteady numerical code using traveling sources has been developed. This thesis presents calculations of the interaction between the irrotational flow outside the boundary layer of the headform and individual traveling bubbles. An error estimation of the method and comparisons with the LCC experiments are presented. Abstract: The angular momentum vector of a Heisenberg ferromagnet with isotropic exchange interaction is conserved, while under uniaxial crystalline anisotropy the projection of the total spin along the easy axis is a constant of motion. Using Noether's theorem, we prove that these conservation laws persist in the presence of dipole-dipole interactions. However, spin and orbital angular momentum are no longer conserved separately. We also define the linear momentum of ferromagnetic textures. Abstract: Over the past few decades, Fourier transform infrared (FTIR) spectroscopy coupled to microscopy has been recognized as an emerging and potentially powerful tool in cancer research and diagnosis. For this purpose, histological analyses performed by pathologists are mostly carried out on biopsied tissue that undergoes the formalin-fixation and paraffin-embedding (FFPE) procedure. This processing method ensures an optimal and permanent preservation of the samples, making FFPE-archived tissue an extremely valuable source for retrospective studies. Nevertheless, as highlighted by previous studies, this fixation procedure significantly changes the principal constituents of cells, resulting in important effects on their infrared (IR) spectrum. Despite the chemical and spectral influence of FFPE processing, some studies demonstrate that FTIR imaging allows precise identification of the different cell types present in biopsied tissue, indicating that the FFPE process preserves spectral differences between distinct cell types. In this study, we investigated whether this is also the case for closely related cell lines. We analyzed spectra from 8 cancerous epithelial cell lines: 4 breast cancer cell lines and 4 melanoma cell lines. For each cell line, we harvested cells at subconfluence and divided them into two sets. We first tested the "original" capability of FTIR imaging to identify these closely related cell lines on cells just dried on BaF2 slides. We then repeated the test after submitting the cells to the FFPE procedure. Our results show that the IR spectra of FFPE processed cancerous cell lines undergo small but significant changes due to the treatment. The spectral modifications were interpreted as a potential decrease in the phospholipid content and protein denaturation, in line with the scientific literature on the topic. Abstract: We present a theoretical study of magnon-mediated heat transport in electrically insulating ferromagnetic wires containing a domain wall (DW). In the regime of validity of continuum micromagnetism, a DW is found to have no effect on the heat conductance. However, spin waves are found to be reflected by DWs with widths of a few lattice spacings, which is associated with emergence of an additional spin wave bound state. Abstract: Background: Activating mutations of the anaplastic lymphoma receptor tyrosine kinase gene (ALK) were identified in both somatic and familial neuroblastoma. The most common somatic mutation, F1174L, is associated with NMYC amplification and displayed an efficient transforming activity in vivo. In addition, both AKL-F1174L and NMYC were shown cooperate in neuroblastoma tumorigenesis in animal models. To analyse the role of ALK mutations in the oncogenesis of neuroblastoma, ALK wt and various ALK mutants were transduced in murine neural crest stem cells (MONC1). Methods: ALK-wt, and F1174L, and R1275Q mutants were stably expressed by retroviral infection using the pMIGR1 vector in the murine neural crest stem cell line MONC-1, previously immortalised with v-myc, and further implanted subcutaneously or orthotopically in nude mice. Results: Both MONC1-ALK-F1174L and -R1275Q cells displayed a rapid tumour forming capacity upon subcutaneous injection in nude mice compared to control MONC1-MIGR or MONC1 cells. Interestingly, the transforming capacity of the F1174L mutant was much more potent compared to that of R1275Q mutant in murine neural crest stem cells, while ALK-wt was not tumorigenic. In addition, mice implanted orthotopically in the left adrenal gland with MONC1-ALK-F1174L cells developed highly aggressive tumours in 100% of mice within three weeks, while MONC1-Migr or MONC1 derived tumours displayed a longer latency and a reduced tumour take. Conclusions: The activating ALK-F1174L mutant is highly tumorigenic in neural crest stem cells. Nevertheless, we cannot exclude a functional implication of the v-myc oncogene used for MONC1 cells immortalisation. Indeed, the control MONC1-Migr and MONC1 cells were also able to derive subcutaneous and orthotopic tumours, although with considerable reduced efficiency. Abstract: We investigate current-driven domain wall (DW) propagation in magnetic nanowires in the framework of the modified Landau-Lifshitz-Gilbert equation with both adiabatic and nonadiabatic spin torque (AST and NAST) terms. By employing a simple analytical model, we can demonstrate the essential physics that any small current density can drive the DW motion along a uniaxial anisotropy nanowire even in absence of NAST, while a critical current density threshold is required due to intrinsic anisotropy pinning in a biaxial nanowire without NAST. The DW motion along the uniaxial wire corresponds to the asymptotical DW oscillation solution under high field/current in the biaxial wire case. The current-driven DW velocity weakly depends on the NAST parameter beta in a uniaxial wire and it is similar to the beta = alpha case (alpha: damping) in the biaxial wire. Apart from that, we discuss the rigid DW motion from both the energy and angular momentum viewpoints and point out some physical relations in between. We also propose an experimental scheme to measure the spin current polarization by combining both field- and current-driven DW motion in a usual flat (biaxial) nanowire.
