Aknowledgement of an annonymous ballad published in broadside form, of which an extremely rare copy can be found at the Vitoria Seminar library, that covers the disastrous storm which decimated Úbeda’s city and fields on the afternoon of September 7th, 1756. Hail accompanied by hurricane winds caused great damage both to the town’s buildings and its farmlands, with also many injuried and three casualties, unfortunately. Den 8:e januari 2005 inträffade en av de mest förödande stormarna i Sveriges historia då hundratusentals blev strömlösa och sju personer miste livet. Stormen Gudrun drabbade centrala Götaland värst och uppemot nio årsavverkningar skog beräknas ha fällts i vissa områden. Tidigare studier av stormen har genomförts på uppdrag av Skogsstyrelsen där resultaten visar att andel stormfälld skogsmarksareal var 11 % i värst drabbade Ljungby kommun, och ca 80 % av all den stormfällda skogen var gran, 18 % var tall och 2 % var löv. Syftet med arbetet är att undersöka mängden stormfälld skog efter stormen Gudrun genom analys av satellitburen fjärranalysdata. Även andelen stormfälld barr- och lövskog beräknades och resultaten jämfördes med de rapporter skrivna för Skogsstyrelsen. Även andelen stormfälld skog som är återbeskogad år 2016 beräknades. En förändringsanalys med satellitbilder från Landsat 5, tagna åren 2004 och 2005, genomfördes vilken inkluderade en skogsmask som skapades genom övervakad MLC-klassificering. Skogsmasken användes för att utesluta ointressanta områden i analyserna. Resultatet användes sedan för analys av andelen stormfälld barr- och lövskog samt för analys av återbeskogade områden år 2016. I den sistnämnda skapades en skogsmask med en satellitbild från Landsat 8 och som sedan användes i analysen. Resultaten från analyserna visar att ca 15,8 % av skogen stormfälldes, varav 78 % var barrskog och 13 % var lövskog. År 2016 hade ca 25 % av de stormfällda områdena återbeskogats. The storm Gudrun hit central Götaland worst and nearly nine years’ professional felling of forests was estimated to have fallen in some areas. Previous studies of the storm were carried out on behalf of the Swedish Forest Agency, where the results show that the proportion of windthrown forest area was 11 % in the worst affected municipality of Ljungby. About 80 % of all damaged forests were spruce, 18 % were pine and 2 % were deciduous. The aim of this thesis is to investigate the amount of windthrown forest after the storm Gudrun through analysis of satellite remote sensing data. The proportion of windthrown coniferous and deciduous forest was calculated and the results were compared to the reports written on behalf of the Swedish Forest Agency. Furthermore, the proportion of reforested areas in 2016 was calculated. A change analysis based on satellite data from Landsat 5 from 2004 and 2005 was performed which included a forest mask created by supervised MLC classification. The forest mask was used to exclude uninteresting areas in the analyses. The result was then used for the analysis of the proportion of windthrown coniferous and deciduous forest and for the analysis of reforested areas in 2016. In the latter, a forest mask based on Landsat 8 data was used. The results from the analyses show that about 15.8 % of the forest was windthrown, of which 78 % were coniferous and 13 % were deciduous forest. By 2016, 25% of the windthrown areas had been reforested. The accuracy of the results is generally high, but despite this, it substantially differs from the results of earlier studies. The reason for this could be differences in satellite images and programs and additional error sources in conjunction with the analyses.

Storm är den absolut vanligaste skadeorsaken på skog. Det handlar om höga värden för skogsägare samt för samhället. Forskningen inom området har ökat sedan 60-talet men ännu finns kunskapsluckor inom området. Målet med denna studie var att förstå hur markens egenskaper påverkar ett skogsbestånds känslighet för storm. 2013 svepte stormen Hilde in över Sveaskogs marker kring Lycksele kommun. Genom data från Sveaskog har vi kunnat studera hur bestånden drabbats av stormen och kombinerat det med data om markens egenskaper i form av markfuktighet och jordart. Eftersom det saknades markdata från ett stort antal avdelningar, skapades en egen marfuktighetskarta och jordartskartan hämtades från Lantmäteriet. Vår hypotes var att en större andel skog skulle blåst omkull på fuktiga avdelningar där jordarten dominerades sediment eller torv. I de inledande analyserna använde vi enbart Sveaskogs data. Markfuktighet visade högst förklaringsgrad och lägst p-värde, men vi kunde inte visa på ett signifikant samband. För materialet vi kompletterat själva med inventeringar kunde inte något signifikant samband hittas. För att göra analyserna mer tillförlitliga behövs fortsatta studier där markfuktighet och jordart är säkerställt i fält. It contains high value for forest owners, as well as for society. Research about storm damage in forests has increased lately but there is still a knowledge gap in the area. The purpose of our study was to evaluate if soil properties affect stand vulnerability to storm. In 2013, the storm Hilde swept over Lycksele municipality. With data provided from Sveaskog we were able to study how the stands were affected by the storm and due to properties (soil moisture and soil type). In the absence actual of soil data from several stands, we created an own soil moisture map and a soil map was obtained from the National Land Survey. Our hypothesis was that stands with high soil moisture or located on sediment would be the most damaged ones. In the initial analyzes our own inventoried soil data was excluded. Soil moisture showed the highest degree of explanation and lowest p-value. However we could not find any significance or high degree of explanation in any of the factors, either with or without our own inventoried soil moisture and soil type. To make the analysis more reliable further studies are required, where soil properties is ensured in the field. There are other elements that should be included in the study since they can affect storm sensitivity of a stand. For example, recently performed thinning or if there are any adjacent clear-cuts.

During the 20th century storm damage in Sweden has increased as a consequence of how the forest has been managed, an increased proportion of forest and older tree stands. The increase of storm damage has consequences for the regional economy, infrastructure, foresters, and the society. At the same time the climate is gradually changing, which means increased temperatures and higher precipitation ranges. Progressively we are shifting towards another climate, and an altered climate will have both direct and indirect effect on our forests. To prevent future storm damage to our forests it is essential to adapt. Forest management must be scrutinized and assessed, and models to predict and evaluate storm damage can be valuable. This study focuses on identifying areas with particular risk for storm damage. By doing this it becomes easier to prevent further damage in the future. It facilitates the decisions for foresters regarding management strategies but also makes it possible to perform deeper assessments of influencing factors, both abiotic and biotic. In this thesis the landscape of Kronoberg County, a county in southern Sweden is examined. Several variables are applied to a classification model which demonstrates five categories of varying risk of storm damage. The model was then compared to actual storm damage to investigate its accuracy. The study showed that when it comes to storm damage to forests this type of simple classification modelling gives a rather realistic picture of the forest sensitivity. A flat landscape like the county of Kronoberg made it easier to perform the analysis since topography can have a large impact on the extent of storm damage. Changing values and altering weighting in the equations was an effective way of investigating the best type of model design. Coastal storm activity for the eastern North Island, between East Cape and Wellington, has been quantified from a meteorological perspective through the use of cyclone tracks and extreme winds and from an oceanographic perspective by using hindcast wave information. It has culminated in the production of a high quality, digital coastal storm database for the eastern North Island. Together, this information provides a new understanding of coastal storm behaviour for the eastern North Island. A regional database of historical coastal storms along the eastern North Island between 1930 and 2005 (75 years) is now available in digital format. Coastal storms were identified as bouts of strong winds (greater than or equal to 10.5 m/s) from long-term local wind records from 1962 to 2005, and prior to this period, coastal storms were qualitatively recognised as any event leading to coastal shipping disruptions/delays, large wave conditions along the coast, episodes of coastal erosion and strong onshore wind periods. This digital database consists of five informative components that include storm meteorology, storm oceanography, impacts and damages, storm photo’s and images, and data sources. It has identified a set of five storm types for the eastern North Island consisting of Trough/Ridges, East Coast Lows, Subtropical Lows, Tasman Sea Lows, and Cyclone-Anticyclone pair. The two dominant types are Trough/Ridge and East Coast Low, with the Trough pattern involving weather systems primarily from the southern ocean, whilst East Coast Lows involve large cyclones off the coast that can be distantly generated (from the Tasman Sea or subtropics) or locally generated around NZ from southern ocean troughs. The most intense coastal storms off the eastern North Island are East Coast Lows involving cyclones from the subtropics. These storm events reveal blocking-type anticyclones east of the Chatham Islands play a vital role in coastal storm activity by steering cyclones southward towar

This plan was developed primarily to provide recommendations and cost estimates to assist in the post-Hurricane Opal recovery effort. Some related long term activities needed for management in this area are also included. Plan recommendations are based on a staff review and analysis of erosional conditions and recovery needs throughout the Florida Panhandle coastal zone for Escambia County through Franklin County. The recommended plan includes natural recovery in undeveloped and non-vulnerable areas, completion of beach clean up and debris removal, beach restoration in the Panama City Beach area, dune restoration in varying degrees throughout much of the Panhandle, includmg replacement of dune walkovers at public access locations. The plan also identifies the need for removal of debris from marine waters, for sand search and supplemental sand placement, for inlet management and improved sand transfer at inlets, for innovative technologies to assist recovery efforts, and recommendation for additional technical assistance, data collection and analysis related to the post-Opal recovery.

In terms of both coastal erosion and structural damage Hurricane Opal may prove to have been the most destructive storm ever to impact the coastal zone of Florida. Structural damage, as well as, beach and dune erosion occurred throughout all of the Panhandle from Escambia to Franklin counties. Damage extended to a lesser degree into lower Gulf Coast counties including Pinellas through Sarasota. Although significant wind damage was observed, the most extensive damage in the coastal zone seaward of the State of Florida CCCL lines was the result of the storm surge and accompanying wave heights and erosion. The structural damage which occurred was primarily the result of structures not being designed and constructed to withstand the impacts of the hurricane. The structural damage to non-conforming structures generated large volumes of debris. Structural damage assessments performed by the Bureau clearly demonstrate the effectiveness of the CCCL program in drastically reducing damages sustained by a major hurricane event. Post-Opal response presented a number of problems including retrieval of sand which was transported by overwash processes, much of it containing construction debris, as well as, the potential of hazardous debris being buried in beach and nearshore areas. Beach scraping and the rebuilding process will continue for months following the storm. Restoration and remedial assistance will be needed to ensure a full and rapid recovery of the beaches and dunes in the Panhandle, particularly in view of the economic importance of those beaches. The Bureau of Beaches and Coastal Systems is currently developing a plan for restoration and recovery of eroded shoreline areas within the Opal-impacted Panhandle region. In addition to the recovery plan, a longer-term study of the impacts of Opal and post-storm recovery processes will be conducted.

The Manly Hydraulics Laboratory, of of the Public Works department of New South Wales, Australia, on behalf of the Coastal Branch, has carried out an inspection of gabion coastal protection structures in the Sydney area to assess their condition following the August 1986 storm.
