1. Anthoropometric similarities and differences in children of aymara and non-aymara descent in northern chile: implications for health and development

Abstract: This study aims to assess the nutritional status of Aymara and non-Aymara children in Arica, comparing anthropometric measurements of boys and girls aged 4-10 to inform interventions for child health and development. We conducted a non-experimental, quantitative, cross-sectional study in Arica, Chile. The sample included 458 children, with equal representation of Aymara and non-Aymara children from diverse socioeconomic backgrounds. Trained research assistants collected anthropometric data using standardized techniques. IBM SPSS statistical software was used for data analysis, including Student's t-test and the Levene test. Both Aymara and non-Aymara children showed high prevalence of overweight and obesity. Boys had a meso-endomorph somatotype, while girls had an endomorph somatotype. Among 8-year-olds, non-Aymara children had a slightly higher mean body weight (35.87, SD 4.50) compared to Aymara children (32.27, SD 4.31), but the difference was not statistically significant (p>0.05). However, 10-year-old Aymara girls had a significantly higher mean body mass index (22.34, SD 4.21) than non-Aymara girls (20.10, SD 3.58) (p=0.05). Regarding body fat percentage, 10-yearold non-Aymara girls had a slightly higher mean (31.01, SD 5.64) than Aymara girls (26.12, SD 5.63), but the difference was not statistically significant (p>0.05). The study found high levels of overweight and obesity in children from northern Chile, increasing with age for both Aymara and non-Aymara groups. The somatotype patterns were consistent across both groups. Although the differences between Aymara and non-Aymara children were not statistically significant, the Aymara group showed slightly higher levels of overweight and obesity. Further research with a larger sample size is needed to confirm these results and identify potential trends. Abstract: DIII-D physics research addresses critical challenges for the operation of ITER and the next generation of fusion energy devices. This is done through a focus on innovations to provide solutions for high performance long pulse operation, coupled with fundamental plasma physics understanding and model validation, to drive scenario development by integrating high performance core and boundary plasmas. Substantial increases in off-axis current drive efficiency from an innovative top launch system for EC power, and in pressure broadening for Alfven eigenmode control from a co-/counter-I p steerable off-axis neutral beam, all improve the prospects for optimization of future long pulse/steady state high performance tokamak operation. Fundamental studies into the modes that drive the evolution of the pedestal pressure profile and electron vs ion heat flux validate predictive models of pedestal recovery after ELMs. Understanding the physics mechanisms of ELM control and density pumpout by 3D magnetic perturbation fields leads to confident predictions for ITER and future devices. Validated modeling of high-Z shattered pellet injection for disruption mitigation, runaway electron dissipation, and techniques for disruption prediction and avoidance including machine learning, give confidence in handling disruptivity for future devices. For the non-nuclear phase of ITER, two actuators are identified to lower the L-H threshold power in hydrogen plasmas. With this physics understanding and suite of capabilities, a high poloidal beta optimized-core scenario with an internal transport barrier that projects nearly to Q = 10 in ITER at ∼8 MA was coupled to a detached divertor, and a near super H-mode optimized-pedestal scenario with co-I p beam injection was coupled to a radiative divertor. The hybrid core scenario was achieved directly, without the need for anomalous current diffusion, using off-axis current drive actuators. Also, a controller to assess proximity to stability limit

Abstract: DIII-D physics research addresses critical challenges for the operation of ITER and the next generation of fusion energy devices. This is done through a focus on innovations to provide solutions for high performance long pulse operation, coupled with fundamental plasma physics understanding and model validation, to drive scenario development by integrating high performance core and boundary plasmas. Substantial increases in off-axis current drive efficiency from an innovative top launch system for EC power, and in pressure broadening for Alfven eigenmode control from a co-/counter-I (p) steerable off-axis neutral beam, all improve the prospects for optimization of future long pulse/steady state high performance tokamak operation. Fundamental studies into the modes that drive the evolution of the pedestal pressure profile and electron vs ion heat flux validate predictive models of pedestal recovery after ELMs. Understanding the physics mechanisms of ELM control and density pumpout by 3D magnetic perturbation fields leads to confident predictions for ITER and future devices. Validated modeling of high-Z shattered pellet injection for disruption mitigation, runaway electron dissipation, and techniques for disruption prediction and avoidance including machine learning, give confidence in handling disruptivity for future devices. For the non-nuclear phase of ITER, two actuators are identified to lower the L-H threshold power in hydrogen plasmas. With this physics understanding and suite of capabilities, a high poloidal beta optimized-core scenario with an internal transport barrier that projects nearly to Q = 10 in ITER at similar to 8 MA was coupled to a detached divertor, and a near super H-mode optimized-pedestal scenario with co-I (p) beam injection was coupled to a radiative divertor. Abstract: DIII-D physics research addresses critical challenges for the operation of ITER and the next generation of fusion energy devices. This is done through a focus on innovations to provide solutions for high performance long pulse operation, coupled with fundamental plasma physics understanding and model validation, to drive scenario development by integrating high performance core and boundary plasmas. Substantial increases in off-axis current drive efficiency from an innovative top launch system for EC power, and in pressure broadening for Alfven eigenmode control from a co-/counter-I p steerable off-axis neutral beam, all improve the prospects for optimization of future long pulse/steady state high performance tokamak operation. Fundamental studies into the modes that drive the evolution of the pedestal pressure profile and electron vs ion heat flux validate predictive models of pedestal recovery after ELMs. Understanding the physics mechanisms of ELM control and density pumpout by 3D magnetic perturbation fields leads to confident predictions for ITER and future devices. Validated modeling of high-Z shattered pellet injection for disruption mitigation, runaway electron dissipation, and techniques for disruption prediction and avoidance including machine learning, give confidence in handling disruptivity for future devices. For the non-nuclear phase of ITER, two actuators are identified to lower the L-H threshold power in hydrogen plasmas. With this physics understanding and suite of capabilities, a high poloidal beta optimized-core scenario with an internal transport barrier that projects nearly to Q = 10 in ITER at ∼8 MA was coupled to a detached divertor, and a near super H-mode optimized-pedestal scenario with co-I p beam injection was coupled to a radiative divertor. The hybrid core scenario was achieved directly, without the need for anomalous current diffusion, using off-axis current drive actuators. Also, a controller to assess proximity to stability limit

Abstract: DIII-D physics research addresses critical challenges for the operation of ITER and the next generation of fusion energy devices. This is done through a focus on innovations to provide solutions for high performance long pulse operation, coupled with fundamental plasma physics understanding and model validation, to drive scenario development by integrating high performance core and boundary plasmas. Substantial increases in off-axis current drive efficiency from an innovative top launch system for EC power, and in pressure broadening for Alfven eigenmode control from a co-/counter-I p steerable off-axis neutral beam, all improve the prospects for optimization of future long pulse/steady state high performance tokamak operation. Fundamental studies into the modes that drive the evolution of the pedestal pressure profile and electron vs ion heat flux validate predictive models of pedestal recovery after ELMs. Understanding the physics mechanisms of ELM control and density pumpout by 3D magnetic perturbation fields leads to confident predictions for ITER and future devices. Validated modeling of high-Z shattered pellet injection for disruption mitigation, runaway electron dissipation, and techniques for disruption prediction and avoidance including machine learning, give confidence in handling disruptivity for future devices. For the non-nuclear phase of ITER, two actuators are identified to lower the L-H threshold power in hydrogen plasmas. With this physics understanding and suite of capabilities, a high poloidal beta optimized-core scenario with an internal transport barrier that projects nearly to Q = 10 in ITER at ∼8 MA was coupled to a detached divertor, and a near super H-mode optimized-pedestal scenario with co-I p beam injection was coupled to a radiative divertor. Abstract: DIII-D research is addressing critical challenges in preparation for ITER and the next generation of fusion devices through focusing on plasma physics fundamentals that underpin key fusion goals, understanding the interaction of disparate core and boundary plasma physics, and developing integrated scenarios for achieving high performance fusion regimes. Fundamental investigations into fusion energy science find that anomalous dissipation of runaway electrons (RE) that arise following a disruption is likely due to interactions with RE-driven kinetic instabilities, some of which have been directly observed, opening a new avenue for RE energy dissipation using naturally excited waves. Dimensionless parameter scaling of intrinsic rotation and gyrokinetic simulations give a predicted ITER rotation profile with significant turbulence stabilization. Coherence imaging spectroscopy confirms near sonic flow throughout the divertor towards the target, which may account for the convection-dominated parallel heat flux. Core-boundary integration studies show that the small angle slot divertor achieves detachment at lower density and extends plasma cooling across the divertor target plate, which is essential for controlling heat flux and erosion. The Super H-mode regime has been extended to high plasma current (2.0 MA) and density to achieve very high pedestal pressures (∼30 kPa) and stored energy (3.2 MJ) with H 98y2 ≈ 1.6-2.4. In scenario work, the ITER baseline Q = 10 scenario with zero injected torque is found to have a fusion gain metric independent of current between q 95 = 2.8-3.7, and a lower limit of pedestal rotation for RMP ELM suppression has been found. In the wide pedestal QH-mode regime that exhibits improved performance and no ELMs, the start-up counter torque has been eliminated so that the entire discharge uses ≈0 injected torque and the operating space is more ITER-relevant. Abstract: Disruption of intestinal microbial communities appears to underlie many human illnesses, but the mechanisms that promote this dysbiosis and its adverse consequences are poorly understood. In patients who received allogeneic hematopoietic cell transplantation (allo-HCT), we describe a high incidence of enterococcal expansion, which was associated with graft-versus-host disease (GVHD) and mortality. We found that Enterococcus also expands in the mouse gastrointestinal tract after allo-HCT and exacerbates disease severity in gnotobiotic models. Enterococcus growth is dependent on the disaccharide lactose, and dietary lactose depletion attenuates Enterococcus outgrowth and reduces the severity of GVHD in mice. Allo-HCT patients carrying lactose-nonabsorber genotypes showed compromised clearance of postantibiotic Enterococcus domination. We report lactose as a common nutrient that drives expansion of a commensal bacterium that exacerbates an intestinal and systemic inflammatory disease.

These characteristics include a profusion of disulfide bonds, salt bridges, hydrogen bonds, and hydrophobic interactions, and a depletion in intrinsically disordered regions. It is unclear, however, whether such differences can also be observed in eukaryotic proteins or when comparing proteins that are adapted to temperatures that are more subtly different. When an organism is exposed to high temperatures, a subset of its proteins is overexpressed (heat-induced proteins), whereas others are either repressed (heat-repressed proteins) or remain unaffected. Here, we determine the expression levels of all genes in the eukaryotic model system Arabidopsis thaliana at 22 and 37 degrees C, and compare both the amino acid compositions and levels of intrinsic disorder of heat-induced and heat-repressed proteins. We show that, compared to heat-repressed proteins, heat-induced proteins are enriched in electrostatically charged amino acids and depleted in polar amino acids, mirroring thermophile proteins. However, in contrast with thermophile proteins, heat-induced proteins are enriched in intrinsically disordered regions, and depleted in hydrophobic amino acids. Our results indicate that temperature adaptation at the level of amino acid composition and intrinsic disorder can be observed not only in proteins of thermophilic organisms, but also in eukaryotic heat-induced proteins; the underlying adaptation pathways, however, are similar but not the same.

Abstract: Objectives: The Maraviroc Switch (MARCH) study week 48 data demonstrated that maraviroc, a chemokine receptor-5 (CCR5) inhibitor, was a safe and effective switch for the ritonavir-boosted protease inhibitor (PI/r) component of a two nucleos(t)ide reverse transcriptase inhibitor [N(t)RTI] plus PI/r-based antiretroviral regimen in patients with R5-tropic virus. Here we report the durability of this finding. Method(s): MARCH, an international, multicentre, randomized, 96-week open-label switch study, enrolled HIV-1-infected adults with R5-tropic virus who were stable (> 24 weeks) and virologically suppressed [plasma viral load (pVL) < 50 HIV-1 RNA copies/mL]. Participants were randomized to continue their current PI/r-based regimen (PI/r) or to switch to MVC plus two N(t)RTIs (MVC) (1:2 randomization). The primary endpoint was the difference in the proportion with pVL < 200 copies/mL at 96 weeks. The switch arm was defined as noninferior if the lower limit of the 95% confidence interval (CI) for the difference was < -12% in the intention-to-treat (ITT) population. Safety endpoints (the difference in the mean change from baseline or a comparison of proportions) were analysed as key secondary endpoints. Result(s): Eighty-two (PI/r) and 156 (MVC) participants were randomized and included in the ITT analysis; 71 (87%) and 130 (83%) were in follow-up and on therapy at week 96. At week 96, 89.0% and 90.4% in the PI/r and MVC arms, respectively, had pVL < 50 copies/mL (95% CI -6.6, 10.2). Moreover, in those switching away from PI/r, there were significant reductions in mean total cholesterol (differences 0.31 mmol/L; P = 0.02) and triglycerides (difference 0.44 mmol/L; P < 0.001). Changes in CD4 T-cell count, renal function, and serious and nonserious adverse events were similar in the two arms. 13. Tentacle Transcriptome and Venom Proteome of the Pacific Sea Nettle, Chrysaora fuscescens (Cnidaria: Scyphozoa)

Abstract: Jellyfish venoms are rich sources of toxins designed to capture prey or deter predators, but they can also elicit harmful effects in humans. In this study, an integrated transcriptomic and proteomic approach was used to identify putative toxins and their potential role in the venom of the scyphozoan jellyfish Chrysaora fuscescens. A de novo tentacle transcriptome, containing more than 23,000 contigs, was constructed and used in proteomic analysis of C. fuscescens venom to identify potential toxins. From a total of 163 proteins identified in the venom proteome, 27 were classified as putative toxins and grouped into six protein families: proteinases, venom allergens, C-type lectins, pore-forming toxins, glycoside hydrolases and enzyme inhibitors. Other putative toxins identified in the transcriptome, but not the proteome, included additional proteinases as well as lipases and deoxyribonucleases. Sequence analysis also revealed the presence of ShKT domains in two putative venom proteins from the proteome and an additional 15 from the transcriptome, suggesting potential ion channel blockade or modulatory activities. Comparison of these potential toxins to those from other cnidarians provided insight into their possible roles in C. fuscescens venom and an overview of the diversity of potential toxin families in cnidarian venoms.

Genes function in the context of molecular networks, with some occupying more important positions than others and thus being likely to be under stronger selective pressures. However, how positive selection distributes across the different parts of molecular networks is still not fully understood. Here, we inferred positive selection using comparative genomics and population genetics approaches through the comparison of 10 mammalian and 270 human genomes, respectively. In agreement with previous results, we found that genes with lower network centralities are more likely to evolve under positive selection (as inferred from divergence data). Surprisingly, polymorphism data yield results in the opposite direction than divergence data: Genes with higher centralities are more likely to have been targeted by recent positive selection during recent human evolution. Our results indicate that the relationship between centrality and the impact of adaptive evolution highly depends on the mode of positive selection and/or the evolutionary time-scale.

Abstract: En el presente estudio se realizó la estandarización de las condiciones de operación de algunas celdas de Franz, sistema que permite realizar la evaluación de la liberación de compuestos biológicamente activos como una de sus aplicaciones. Para ello se seleccionaron y caracterizaron dos complejos obtenidos entre Eudragit E y ácido benzoico como modelos a emplear, de acuerdo con su solubilidad. Se evaluó su comportamiento de liberación en diferentes condiciones operacionales del ensayo y los resultados se evaluaron empleando el modelo de Korsmeyer-Peppas y el análisis estadístico correspondiente. El análisis de Korsmeyer-Peppas demostró que el mecanismo de liberación del ácido benzoico se ajusta a la ley de difusión de Fick, en algunos casos. Las condiciones operacionales definidas para el ensayo de liberación en las celdas de Franz fueron las siguientes: la concentración del ácido benzoico en la dispersión de complejo en el compartimento donor, 0,07%; la velocidad de agitación, 400 rpm; el volumen de muestreo, 1 mL y la frecuencia de muestreo según un esquema determinado. Se demostró la reproducibilidad del ensayo de liberación en las condiciones operacionales definidas, mediante análisis de varianza.

Abstract: Most developing countries have made efforts to undertake decentralisation. Women and marginalised groups have enhanced their political power, and funds have been allocated to remote communities. A recent NCCR North- South publication, Decentralisation Meets Local Complexity, examines case studies in Latin America and South Asia. It confirms the importance of basic principles for successful decentralisation, such as participation, non-exclusion, efficacy, transparency and accountability. At the same time it shows that there is no “global blueprint”, as decentralisation takes place in highly complex and diverse local contexts.

22. The biopharmaceutic drug classification, the theoretical basis and its importance in the biowaiver studies

Abstract: The Biopharmaceutics Classification System (BCS), published in 1995 by Gordon Amidon and coworkers, is proposed based on recognizing the underlying process that is controlling the drug absorption rate and extent, namely, drug solubility and intestinal membrane permeability, classifying a drug according to this. Its objective is the possibility to set standards for in vitro drug dissolution testing methodology which will correlate with the in vivo process, avoiding human studies. The BCS can be used to classify drugs and set standards for scale-up and post-approval changes to show that the efficacy has not been altered, as well as standards for in vitro/in vivo correlation for bioequivalence studies, for solid oral immediate release products. About this, exists discusses for further potential applications of the BCS in the development of new drugs and drug products and in the possibility of biowaivers for controlled-release products, El Sistema de Clasificación Biofarmacéutica (SCB), publicado por Gordon Amidon y cols. en 1995, se basa en un sólido fundamento científico para clasificar un fármaco considerando los parámetros de solubilidad y permeabilidad, factores estrechamente relacionados con el proceso de absorción, y plantea como objetivo, la posibilidad de establecer correlaciones in vitro-in vivo que permitan sustituir los ensayos realizados en humanos por ensayos de disolución in vitro, de acuerdo con la clasificación obtenida para el fármaco. Actualmente la aplicación del SCB está enfocada a los estudios de bioequivalencia para demostrar intercambio de medicamentos, presentados en forma sólida de liberación inmediata, de administración peroral y al aseguramiento de que los cambios realizados durante el escalonamiento o en las formulaciones o procesos de éstos, una vez aprobados, no tengan incidencia en su comportamiento in vivo. La proyección de la aplicación del SCB se está dando hacia su implantación como herramienta en el desarrollo de nuevos fármacos, en el diseño y desarrollo de medicamentos y en la posibilidad de bioexenciones para los sistemas de liberación controlada.

In this sense, the osmotic systems, controlled delivery drug products, have been chosen for the present review to illustrate their physicochemical principles that govern their formulation. Different types of oral osmotic systems and their applications are also discussed. Finally, some studies related to this subject were reviewed. Because of their advantages and strong market potential, the future of osmotic systems seems so good., Considerando que en el ámbito mundial el diseño de nuevos fármacos involucra un costo muy alto, tanto en tiempo como en dinero, la preocupación en los años recientes se ha centrado en diseñar y desarrollar medicamentos que controlen la liberación del activo, de manera que se les pueda dar un valor agregado a moléculas ya existentes, lo que significa una menor inversión en términos de costos. 24. Preformulation of theophylline 65% sustained released tablets and evaluation of its release kinetics

Abstract: Controlled Release (CR) tablets were prepared using the following: anhydrous theophylline (Parke Davis) Methocel E4MCR® (supplied by Colorcon Sucursal de Colombia, Dow Chemical Company), Ludipress LCEÃ’ (supplied by BASF Fine Chemicals) and Magnesium Stearate. There were studied the CR tablets at eight pHs. The Methocel E4MCRÃ’ effect in the lowest Methocel E4MCRÃ’ formulation was disintegrant. 4, 5 and 6 formulations dissolution profiles were characterized by an initial burst effect with a greater amount of drug released, followed by a more-uniform release of drug. In the initial phase, the drug release was possibly due to the dissolution of free drug on the surface of the matrix and erosion. In the second phase, a linear relationship of the natural logarithm of remanent percentage drug to time was observed from such formulations, suggesting a diffusion-controlled mechanism of drug release. There were compared the dissolutions profiles of all the formulations with two formulations already marketed, it was found that 4 formulation showed the desired dissolution profile., Fueron elaborados 6 lotes de tabletas a partir de teofilina, Methocel E4MCRÃ’ y Ludipress LCEÃ’, se mantuvo constante la proporción del fármaco y se modificó la composición del excipiente, para estudiar el efecto de la formulación sobre la liberación, la que se evaluó a ocho pHs. El efecto del Methocel E4MCRÃ’ en la formulación 2 fue desintegrante, para la 3 este efecto se presentó en una menor magnitud y fue contrarrestado por la formación del gel a causa de la hidratación del Methocel E4MCRÃ’. En las formulaciones 4, 5 y 6, los perfiles de disolución se caracterizaron por la aparición de dos fases con el mismo orden cinético, donde la primera fase corresponde a la disolución rápida de la teofilina ubicada sobre la superficie de la tableta, y la segunda a una liberación más uniforme por la difusión de la teofilina a través del gel formado. Los perfiles para todas las formulaciones fueron comparados con los perfiles de dos productos del mercado Colombiano administrados para 12 horas, siendo la formulación 4 la que presentó las características deseadas.

26. Physical and chemical stability of extemporaneous liquid preparations obtained from captopril tablets

Abstract: The stability of oral liquid preparations compounded extemporaneously from two brands of Captopril tablets from the Colombian national market, coded as A and B was studied. The triturate tablets were incorporated in two vehicles used commonly in the hospital, e.g. V-1: distilled water : vitamin C (98 % : 2 %) and V-2: dextrose 10 % in distilled water : vitamin C (98 % : 2 %), and stored at 5 °C, 25 °C and 40 °C. A previously validated HPLC methodology was used as method of analysis. Based on the results it may conclude that the temperature is the factor that shows a more incidence in the shelf time of the formulations compounded extemporaneously followed by the vehicle nature. However, the two brands have similar behaviors. The worst conditions obtained are 40 °C and vehicle No. 1., Se estudió la estabilidad de preparaciones líquidas extemporáneas para administración peroral, elaboradas a partir de tabletas de captopril de dos marcas comerciales del mercado nacional colombiano, codificadas como A y B, utilizando solventes de uso común en hospitales. Vehículo 1: agua destilada + vitamina C 10 % (98 % : 2 %), Vehículo 2: dextrosa 10 % en agua destilada + vitamina C 10 % (98 % : 2 %). Las muestras fueron almacenadas a 5 ºC, 25 ºC y 40 ºC. La cuantificación del fármaco se realizó utilizando una metodología analítica HPLC, previamente validada. Los resultados indicaron que la temperatura es el factor que mayor incidencia presenta sobre el tiempo de vida útil de las preparaciones líquidas extemporáneas desarrolladas, siendo la condición de 40 ºC la menos favorable, en segundo lugar se ubicó el factor vehículo, en donde el vehículo 1 presentó un efecto mayor sobre la estabilidad, mientras que finalmente las marcas comerciales evaluadas presentaron comportamientos similares.

Abstract: An overview of experiments is presented, in which the physical dimensions, emittance and perveance are scaled to explore driver-relevant beam dynamics. Among these are beam merging, focusing to a small spot, and bending and recirculating beams. The Virtual National Laboratory for Heavy Ion Fusion (VNL) is also developing two driver-scale beam experiments involving heavy-ion beams with I(sub beam) ~; 1 Ampere to provide guidance for the design of an Integrated Research Experiment (IRE) for driver system studies within the next 5 years. Multiple-beam sources and injectors are being designed and a one-beam module will be built and tested. Another experimental effort will be the transport of such a beam through ~;100 magnetic quadrupoles. The experiment will determine transport limits at high aperture fill factors, beam halo formation, and the influence on beam properties of secondary electron Research into driver technology will be briefly presented, including the development of ferromagnetic core materials, induction core pulsers, multiple-beam quadrupole arrays and plasma channel formation experiments for pinched transport in reactor chambers.

29. Development and validation of an analitycal methodology(HPLC RP) theophylline determination

Abstract: Now adays theophylline can be found in more than 30 pharmaceutical products; among them 10 are programmed liberation forms wich are used for respiratory diseases. For the characterization of these products one of the nine USP 23 dissolution assays is required.This research paper presents an alternative method for the quantification of theophylline which can be used for the end product as well as in the dissolution test.The methodology includes the chromatographic separation by an octadecylsilane C-18 column, methanol/water as the movil phase and the spectrofotometric detection at 270 nm., En la actualidad la teofilina se comercializa en Colombia en más de 30 medicamentos, de los cuales alrededor de unos 10 son productos de liberación programada para el manejo de diferentes problemas respiratorios. Para la caracterización de estos productos es indispensable el desarrollo de una de las nueve pruebas de disolución que ofrece la USP 23. En el presente artículo se propone un método de cuantificación para la teofilina alternativo al indicado por la farmacopea y aplicable tanto a la valoración del producto terminado, como a la cuantificación de la cantidad disuelta durante la correspondiente prueba de disolución. El método comprende un proceso de separación cromatográfica en fase reversa mediante una columna de octadecilsilano C18, una fase móvil constituida exclusivamente por metanol/agua y detección espectrofotométrica a 270 nm.

34. Nondestructive Testing of Structural Deficiencies in Protective Filters.

Abstract: This report describes adaptations of nondestructive testing methods used for detecting defects in protective filter elements. Thermal imaging revealed some flaws in the plasticizer material used for sealing the charcoal impregnated filtration pads and in other areas of the filter. Radiation gauging and X-ray vidicon proved successful for inspecting filters by real-time scanning. These processes obviated the human element and were conducive to assembly-line-type production. Low kilovolt manual X-radiography proved invaluable in refining the other techniques used in this study, all of which hold promise for accelerated inspection. (Author)

Abstract: Las propiedades fisicoquímicas de los fármacos y de los auxiliares de formulación, así como la tecnología de elaboración del SENF que los contiene, son factores determinantes de la Biodisponibilidad de los medicamentos. Es así como la Lactosa y el Almidón de Maíz modifican la disponibilidad "in vitro" del Fenobarbital presentado en cápsulas de gelatina dura, incidiendo tanto en el inicio como en el desarrollo del proceso de disolución del fármaco, observándose su efecto tanto en la velocidad, como en la cin6tica de disolución del Fenobarbital. A pesar de ser la Lactosa un excipiente hidrosoluble, que podría competir en solubilidad con el Fenobarbital, sin embargo, a medida que aumentaba la proporción de esta en el excipiente, más rápido se liberaba y disolvía el Fármaco, el cual tan solo ocupaba el 19% de la capacidad de la cápsula.

36. Incipient Leak Detection Using Radioactive Krypton 85.

Abstract: In this study, a method for detecting incipient leakage in stored munitions was investigated using an inert radioactive gas, krypton 85, as the inspecting medium. Krypton 85, a beta particle and gamma radiation emitter, pervaded small fissures and corrosion pits which progressed with time. When these defects came sufficiently close to the containers' outer surfaces, the relative attenuation of beta particles provided the mechanism for defect detection. Both simulated and natural corrosion were detected and measured in test standards. In a surveillance program, closed end-items were monitored from the time of fabrication, and natural corrosion pits were located and measured when pitting had penetrated less than 20% of the items' thickness in areas of interest. This process is considered to have significant potential for detecting incipient leakage. (Author)

37. Development of Nondestructive Testing Methods for Inspection and Evaluation of Closures in Chemical Munitions.

Abstract: The project has essentially been an evaluation of the various nondestructive testing techniques considered most applicable to the inspection of the three primary closures used for sealing highly toxic chemical munitions. The three closures are the press-fit doubled-ball closure, the circumferential TIG weld, and the projection resistance weld. For the press-fit doubled-ball closure, a definite ultrasonic procedure has been established. For the circumferential tungsten/inert-gas weldment and the deep-seated projection resistance weldment, the results of this study have provided the direction required for followup investigations. Ultrasonic techniques, Krypton diffusion, and electromagnetic methods were evaluated under this program. Considerable data have been acquired that will be utilized when attempting to implement the results of this study into quality assurance inspection system. (Author)
