Neither communist, nor fascist, the personalist third way was an original attempt to remedy the malaise of liberal democracies in 1930s Europe. Personalism puts the emphasis on the human person – understood to be an individual 'in relation' to others – as the foundation and aim of society. Yet, because of the impossibility of subjecting the human person to a systematic definition, personalism remains complex and multifaceted, to the extent that it might be best to speak of ‘personalisms’ in the plural. The various personalist movements that emerged in France in the 1930s are little known, and the current historiography in English misrepresents them. This dissertation is a study of the various personalist movements based in France in the 1930s, examining their spiritual research and political philosophy through the vantage point of Swiss writer Denis de Rougemont (1906-1985). In Rougemont lies the key to understanding the personalist groupings because he was the only thinker to remain active in the two foremost movements (Ordre Nouveau and Esprit) throughout the 1930s. The personalism of Ordre Nouveau was the most original, in both senses of the term. It deserves particular attention as an important political philosophy and an attempt to justify political and economic federalism in 1930s Europe. Whilst an Ordre Nouveau activist, Rougemont can be looked upon as the mediator and federator of personalisms in the 1930s. However, Rougemont’s particular contribution to personalist thought was more spiritual and theological than political or economic. Rougemont saw it as his vocation, in a strict religious sense, to oppose ‘totalitarian’ regimes. In the final analysis, Rougemont’s personalism was best expressed in the minor classic 'L’Amour et l’Occident' (1939). Love, as the affirmation of personal freedom and responsibility vis-à-vis other persons, is the closest illustration of what lies at the heart of the personalism of Denis de Rougemont.

- Abstract
Purpose: The governments that most influence the direction of the world economy have been inconsistent in their interventions related to financing, sending contradictory signals to developing economies. Theoretical framework: Through the present study, we sought to explore the social phenomenon of reliability in the creation, destruction and mobilization of debts and savings in the MSEs of the Surco district, for this purpose, The world economy has gone through a series of events that have had a significant impact on the financial stability of many nations. Although companies were able to prevent productive activities from falling into a significant contraction, it is important to keep in mind that today's society is going through episodes of high volatility marked by a high degree of liquidity and insolvency problems among its participants (Altamirano et al., 2020). Design/methodology/approach: Qualitative approach of phenomenological - hermeneutic design, managers, assistant managers and business advisors of financial services companies in the district were interviewed. Technique is the interview follows a predetermined pattern, the arrangement of their questions and answers allows effective data collection and presentation of results. The information will be processed with Atlas.Ti. a professional software for qualitative data analysis. Findings: The study evidences the reasoning and sensitivity of the interviewees, concluding that, reliability allows reducing the time and money invested in supervising and following up in order to meet and enforce debt and savings commitments. Research, Practical & Social implications: There is a degree of sensitivity with respect to the financial information provided by MSEs in order to qualify for an operation, which is why it is necessary to cross-check such information and compare data with other entities. Originality/value: It was justified by the need to "know" the ph

- Abstract

- Abstract

At the University of Rwanda, anatomy is being taught using team-based learning (TBL). While student-generated multiple choice questions (MCQs) stimulate deeper thinking on a given topic, their impact on anatomy learning is not known. This study aimed to find out the impact of student-generated MCQs on the current anatomy teaching method at the University of Rwanda. Methods: In this comparative interventional study, two similar chapters on anatomy were selected; one was taught using TBL while for the other one, in addition to TBL, students were encouraged to set MCQs while studying. Pre- and post-test scores were analyzed using SPSS 23 and the Student’s t-test was used to compare the mean scores obtained. Results: Thirty-one medical students were recruited. Pre-test mean scores were 25.10 and 25.19 out of 50 for chapters 1 and 2, respectively. Although the students’ post-test scores improved after teaching for each chapter, the improvement was much greater for chapter 2 than for chapter 1, with mean scores of 39.97 and 32.45 out of 50, respectively (P< 0.05). Despite such improvement, almost half of the students found that setting MCQs was not easy. Conclusion: This study found that student-generated MCQs can be used as a simple and cost-effective tool to enhance TBL of anatomy. Keywords: anatomy, teaching, MCQs, TBL, University of Rwanda

- Abstract
Latinx students’ educational experiences are impacted by social identities like gender and nativity status. However, there is limited research on gender and nativity differences in the development of social capital during college among Latinx students. Based on the immigration and education literature, I have developed hypotheses and competing hypotheses for the following study. I hypothesize that Latinx female students are more likely to build relationships with faculty. However, my competing hypothesis is that Latinx male students are more likely to create relationships with faculty. I also hypothesize that students born in the US are more likely to know a faculty recommender. However, my competing hypothesis is that students born abroad are more likely to connect with faculty recommenders. Lastly, I hypothesize that there is an interaction between gender and nativity status. Thus, the following research questions guide this project: Are there gender and/or nativity differences in the social capital developed in college among Latinx students? Further, is there an interaction between gender and nativity? I use logistic regression analyses of the 2018 University of California Undergraduate Experiences Survey (UCUES) data, which includes the responses of first- and second year Latinx students (n=2,342). Findings show that difference are concentrated on their nativity status more than their gender. Latinx students born abroad have a more likelihood of knowing a faculty recommender compared to students born in the US. In addition, there are significant differences when gender and nativity status interacted. Latinx male students who were born abroad are more likely to know a faculty recommender.

- Abstract
Recent policy initiatives in New Zealand and internationally have focussed on the importance of continuity of learning for children transitioning to school. Effective transitions occur when continuity of learning is supported, with the sharing of assessment information seen as an important strategy to support continuity of learning for children transitioning to school. The perspectives of those directly involved in the sharing of assessment information between early childhood services and schools are underrepresented in the research literature. This study therefore aimed to compare the beliefs, experiences and practices of New Zealand early childhood and new entrant teachers regarding the sharing of assessment information to support children’s continuity of learning as they transition to school. Using self-administered online surveys, qualitative and quantitative data was gathered from early childhood and new entrant teachers in the Canterbury region. Analysis of the data identified several areas of similarity within and between the sectors including valuing continuity of learning whilst experiencing barriers to information sharing. A number of significant differences in perspectives emerged from the data, in particular regarding the utility of information shared, given the reported emphasis on the provision of strengths-based information. Findings suggest that inconsistent information sharing practices have led to new entrant teacher dissatisfaction with current processes, and a desire to see more formalised processes enacted. The study identifies several recommendations, including that there is a need for greater collaboration and communication between the two education sectors to ensure assessment information is shared effectively. The provision of guidelines and the development of a template would improve the utility of the information supplied and ensure a more consistent approach to information sharing. The sharing of assessment information should be made comp

- Abstract
Research in the sociology of education has long stressed the benefits of social capital for academic success. This explanation, however, offers little insight for understanding the academic success of underrepresented students, including Latinos and African Americans – who are often examined through deficit models. Drawing from social capital theory, this study examines the effect of an additional source of social capital that may facilitate college success for underrepresented students: sibling social capital. I expect that having an older sibling who attended college and talking to them about educational matters will prove especially beneficial for underrepresented students’ college achievement (college GPA) and engagement (academic interactions) compared to their overrepresented peers (whites and Asians). Using the Social Interactions and Academic Opportunities Survey, with a random sample of 401 undergraduates attending a Hispanic Serving Institution, I use OLS and logistic regression to predict college success. I measure sibling social capital in two ways: 1) number of older sibling who attend/attended college and 2) the frequency and topics of educationally relevant conversations the younger sibling reports having with their older sibling while in college. Results indicate that sibling college attendance has positive effects for underrepresented students compared to overrepresented groups. The effect of educationally relevant conversations is mixed. Analysis focused on typically marginalized students may reveal tools for success that have been previously overlooked by social capital studies and studies on the academic achievement of underrepresented groups.

- Abstract
Use of cover crops and compost increased soil quality in irrigated, intensive production of lettuce and broccoli in the Salinas Valley. These methods had the beneficial impacts of increasing soil microbial biomass, increasing total soil carbon and nitrogen, reducing surface bulk density and decreasing the potential for groundwater pollution as a result of nitrate leaching below the root zone. These soil benefits did not lead to lower yields and occasionally resulted in fewer weeds and lower lettuce corky root disease. Although surface minimum tillage reduced yields, it led to reduced potential for nitrate leaching below the root zone. Use of conventional tillage, cover crops, and compost produced high vegetable yields and acceptable net economic returns over a 2-year period, but broccoli was more profitable than lettuce under this regime. Understanding the trade-offs of various costs and benefits will help growers choose management practices that optimize economic and environmental benefits.

- Abstract
High schools are key settings for adolescent development, yet life course scholars have not fully examined how schools shape transitions to adulthood. Schools are important for socializing youth, but most education research examines cognitive outcomes, like test scores, rather than behavioral outcomes, like welfare receipt. Theories about transitions to adulthood and the role of curricular tracking each focus on racial/ethnic differences, but there is little connection between the two areas of inquiry. This study explores racial/ethnic variation in the effect of curricular tracking on women's risk of young welfare receipt, and on behavioral outcomes I term the proximate causes of welfare --dropping out of high school, teenage motherhood, limited work experience, poverty, and single motherhood. In three distinct but theoretically connected essays, I study these relationships using a sample of black, Latina, and white women from the National Longitudinal Survey of Youth. Chapter 2 examines racial/ethnic differences in the effect of college and vocational tracks on behavioral outcomes of schooling. College tracks reduce women's risk of experiencing the proximate causes of receipt, but these effects are much stronger for white women than for black and Latina women. Women of color have lower risks of each of the proximate causes in vocational tracks and racial/ethnic inequality is greatest in college tracks. Chapter 3 considers whether racial variation in the effects of tracking influences pathways to welfare receipt. Tracking shapes welfare dynamics, and racial inequality in these effects is greatest in the college track. Whites benefit more from college track placement while women of color benefit more from vocational track coursework. Tracking influences welfare risks primarily through effects on teen motherhood and dropping out of school. Chapter 4 explores a mechanism through which racial/ethnic differences in the effect of tracking might operate: an "attitude-achie

- Abstract
Vegetable growers have been experimenting with reduced tillage practices to increase soil organic matter, limit compaction, and reduce fuel and labor costs. We studied soil properties of different tillage practices and compared deep minimum tillage (chiseling and ripping) with shallow minimum tillage for lettuce on a farm in the Salinas Valley. We found that periodic deep minimum tillage is recommended for long-term retention of semipermanent, raised beds in lettuce production. Over a period of several years, deep minimum tillage increased lettuce yield and decreased symptoms of lettuce drop disease, as compared with shallow minimum tillage. Continuous shallow minimum tillage, despite a trend toward higher active and total organic matter in the surface layer of soil, is best used with intermittent deeper tillage to avoid disease and yield losses.
