This contribution aims to describe the process of the inverse identification of the parameters of a nonlinear material model from experimentally obtained data. This process takes place with the aid of approaches utilizing optimization procedures based on population methods which are currently implemented in the ANSYS Workbench environment. The input data for the described numerical procedure took the form of the points of a load-displacement curve which was measured during the performance of a three-point bending test on a concrete beam. This experiment was numerically simulated via the finite element method with the use of the Menétrey-Willam nonlinear material model. Great attention is paid to the description of the sensitivity analysis and the parameter correlation performed with the utilization of a programmed script that enables the correct understanding of the used material model. Emphasis is therefore placed on the analysis of individual parameters whose understanding and correct setting have a significant influence on the convergence of the nonlinear solution. The basic principle of the identification by optimization is the minimization of the difference between experimentally and numerically obtained load-displacement curves. However, the problem is how to formulate this difference as precise as possible because the right choice of objective function is crucial for achieving the optimum. One possible way is to use the root-mean-squared error that is often used for evaluation of accuracy of economy or weather mathematical models. The text also deals with the possibility of a reduction in the design vector according to the results of sensitivity analysis and shows how this reduction affects the accuracy of the sought parameters. What would a desire that is notbased on the desire of the Otherbe like? Research into latent fingermark detection and visualisation has taken many paths over the years as researchers and practitioners explore numerous methods to improve existing reagents. The majority of past research has resulted in providing small, incremental improvements to existing techniques. Currently, some researchers have opted to seek more transformational improvements in detection sensitivity, selectivity and visualisation. One such area being investigated is utilising immunology to target proteins, amino acids and drug metabolites in the latent fingermark deposit. Research to date has indicated that antibodies have great potential in providing these transformational improvements due to their ability to bind to certain fingermark components with high sensitivity and selectivity. Following on from the antibody research, aptamers have been highlighted as the next potential immunogenic technique for several reasons, including reduced health and safety issues, lower cost, greater sensitivity and selectivity, and ease of design and versatility. Aptamers are specifically selected oligonucleotides comprised of either ribonucleic acid (RNA) or single-stranded deoxyribonucleic acid (ssDNA). Due to the selection strategies employed, aptamers can be designed to target most molecules and bind to them with detection limits in the sub-micromolar to nanomolar ranges. Although aptamers have been successfully used in a variety of highly sensitive and selective detection devices, they have not been investigated for use in the detection and visualisation of latent fingermarks prior to this project. Initially, this project focussed on aptamers targeting amino acids as a means of visualising latent fingermarks. However, it was found that strong, non-specific interactions occurred with both the aptamer and the fluorescent tag, resulting in a lack of success with this approach. Five endophytic bacteria were isolated from healthy chickpea (Cicer arietinum L.) plants by surface-disinfestation method and identified based on morphological, physiological and biochemical tests. Erwinia herbicola and Enterobacter agglomerans, which had nitrate-solubilizing ability, were isolated from the root endosphere and Bacillus megaterium, B. circulans and one unidentified species of Bacillus were isolated from the leaf and stem tissues. None of the isolates had phosphate-solubilizing ability. All the isolates tolerated a wide range of pH and exhibited growth from pH 5 to 9. B. circulans and E. agglomerans tolerated an alkaline pH of 11, which is unusual. Higher growth promotion was noticed in chickpea plants treated with B. megaterium, E. agglomerans and Bacillus sp. and the plants treated with endophytes survived well in the presence of the wilt pathogen, Rhizoctonia solani. Seedlings from seeds treated with bacteria showed an increase in phenol content up to sixth day after Inoculation. The maximum phenol content (483.33μg g−1) was noticed in B. megaterium treated and the lowest (246.67μg g−1) was in control. Endophytic bacteria from healthy plant tissue could play a useful role In plant protection.

The Margaret River hairy marron, Cherax tenuimanus (Smith, 1912) (Decapoda: Parastacidae) is critically endangered due to the introduction of the widespread marron, C. cainii Austin, 2002. This project investigates the rapid replacement of C. tenuimanus with studies important to its conservation. The ability to identify correctly in the field C. tenuimanuss, C. cainii and hybrids was investigated by linking morphology and marker allozyme loci. C. tenuimanus was readily identified in the field and errors were conservative; no genetically identified hybrids or C. cainii were field identified as C. tenuimauus during tissue samples collection. A prototype field identification guide has been constructed, aiming to provide the general public with an ability to identify correctly in the field C. tenuimanus. This should allow community participation in recovery plans centred on active removal of C. cainii and hybrids and ensure minimal accidental removal of C. tenuimanus. The guide will serve to allow recreational marron fishing within C. tenuimanus habitat, and raise public awareness about C. tenuimanus and its conservation. For the purpose of investigating the role of hybridisation in the replacement, accurate field identification of hybrid marron, based on morphology, was not achievable. Investigation into the relationship between median carina length and orbital carapace length recorded during tissue sample collection provided some distinction, but not at a diagnostic level. The genetically diverse F2 or backcross hybrid marron had the lowest accurate field identification. Further investigation into morphological and morphometric relationships will be necessary if precise accuracy in field identification of marron is deemed possible. Helicopter slung-load operations are common in both military and civil contexts. Helicopters and loads are often qualified for these operations by means of flight tests, which can be expensive and time consuming. There is significant potential to reduce such costs both through revisions in flight-test methods and by using validated simulation models. To these ends, flight tests were conducted at Moffett Field to demonstrate the identification of key dynamic parameters during flight tests (aircraft stability margins and handling-qualities parameters, and load pendulum stability), and to accumulate a data base for simulation development and validation. The test aircraft was a UH-60A Black Hawk, and the primary test load was an instrumented 8- by 6- by 6-ft cargo container. Tests were focused on the lateral and longitudinal axes, which are the axes most affected by the load pendulum modes in the frequency range of interest for handling qualities; tests were conducted at airspeeds from hover to 80 knots. Using telemetered data, the dynamic parameters were evaluated in near real time after each test airspeed and before clearing the aircraft to the next test point. These computations were completed in under 1 min. A simulation model was implemented by integrating an advanced model of the UH-60A aerodynamics, dynamic equations for the two-body slung-load system, and load static aerodynamics obtained from wind-tunnel measurements. Comparisons with flight data for the helicopter alone and with a slung load showed good overall agreement for all parameters and test points; however, unmodeled secondary dynamic losses around 2 Hz were found in the helicopter model and they resulted in conservative stability margin estimates.

On 26 Oct 2000, the Joint Service Small Arms Program at the U.S. Army Armament Research, Development and Engineering Center (ARDEC), Picatinny Arsenal, New Jersey hosted a meeting between representatives from the New Jersey Institute of Technology (NJIT) and personnel from the Close Combat Armaments Center. The meeting was the first of a planned series following the July 2000 signing of a Memorandum of Agreement between ARDEC and NJIT for support in the development and selection of technologies applicable for 'smart gun' or 'user only' gun technologies. NJIT was tasked by the State of New Jersey to research the state-of-the-art and near future technologies and systems with the goal of determining if they could reduce the number of accidental and purposeful shootings (to include suicide) by unapproved users of the weapon. The State of New Jersey has mandated that handguns be equipped with user identification or authorization technologies, when such technologies are available and developed to a suitable extent. These technologies also have potential application for use with future sophisticated small arms. Such weapons if captured by enemy combatants could pose a significant threat to friendly forces. Technologies to disable the weapon and prevent unauthorized use are of interest to the U.S. armed forces.

This paper describes the methodology for usage of Bayesian Belief Networks (BBNs) in fault detection for aircraft gas turbine engines. First, the basic theory of BBNs is discussed, followed by a discussion on the application of this theory to a specific engine. In particular, the selection of faults and the means by which operating regions for the BBN system are chosen are analyzed. This methodology is then illustrated using the GE CFM56-7 turbofan engine as an example.

This report outlines some of the structural identification and robust control methods developed for smart structural systems. A simple procedure for the shape optimization of distributed sensors is developed. The outputs of these spatially distributed sensors are utilized for the implementation of optimal controllers on the smart structural systems. A structural identification technique is developed by utilizing the multiple parametric measurements provided by the shaped PVDF film sensors. This method generates a minimal state variable representation of the structural system. The outputs of the state variable model are measured by using the distributed sensors. A variety of robust controllers were designed and implemented on the smart structural systems. In this study we have investigated the design of robust controllers by incorporating the performance requirements, robustness against the system uncertainties and the control effort constraints. The robustness properties of the controllers have been verified experimentally.

The purpose of this study is to streamline the contract closeout process through the application of continuous process improvement techniques. A methodology for the identification of procedures involved in the process and problem areas in the process was developed. Available literature was reviewed and personal interviews were conducted to develop a model of the contract closeout process and to identify problems in the contract closeout process. Continuous Process Improvement procedures were applied to the contract model and the problems identified to eliminate the problems and increase the efficiency of the process. Recommendations included: increasing the priority placed on the close out of U. S. Government contracts, development of an automated system for the close out of U. S. Government contracts, development of a training program in the contract closeout process, improvement of communications between organizations involved in the contract closeout process, and application of continuous process improvement procedures to reduce the time required to close out U. A primary mission of the Defense Advanced Research Projects Agency (DARPA) is the development of innovative system concepts for improving the effectiveness of U.S. military forces. To assist DARPA in this effort, RAND has established the Concept Analysis Environment (CAE), a secure set of systems for the analysis, exploration, and evaluation of advanced military concepts. This secure framework incorporates simulation models for determining the effectiveness of advanced military system concepts in simulated battlefield environments. The authors describe the system's current and prospective simulation models and their use in two projects: the tactical armor/anti-armor study and the joint close support study. The CAE is expected to make a significant contribution to the three stages of developing innovative system concepts: initial conceptualization, identification of desirable system characteristics, and determination of probable military effectiveness.

A three stage process is proposed for enhancing productivity through the utilization of human resources. The stages comprising the process are: (1) identifying poor performance; (2) deciding what causes poor performance; and (3) coping with poor performance. Together these strategies form a performance enhancement system. Strategies for identifying a poor performance include examining discrepancies between goals and measured achievement, making comparisons across people, units or organizations, and making comparisons across time. A model for diagnosing and responding to poor performance is presented based on attribution theory. Empirical results in support of the model are discussed. The term 'dynamic parameter analysis' is used in this course to mean a discussion of (1) the general systems identification problem, (2) parameter estimation techniques, and (3) parameter analysis methods. Systems identification is the determination of the characteristics of a physical system from experimental test data. Parameter estimation techniques are methods used in systems identification problems, and parameter analysis is putting the results of these experiments to good use.

The purpose of the present experiment was to determine the effect of knowledge of results (KR) when introduced separately from any change in motivation. That is, the object was to determine how much of the improvement reported by Shvarts is due to a learning process specific to the stimulus used, and how much is due to a general excitation of cerebral centres, which according to Shvarts, transfers to the discrimination of other stimuli. The following changes in the procedures described by Shvarts were made. First, KR was intruduced some time after the effect of the motivation variable had been measured. These two variables were confounded in Shvarts' study. Secondly, to distinguish training effects from motivation effects, the level of discrimination was determined independently on a Landolt ring before and after the experiment, in which the training stimulus was a letter E. The relative legibility of special symbols constructed from 5 x 7, 5 x 9, 7 x 9 and 7 x 11 dot matrices was determined. The special symbols were shown to one group of operators under nearly optimal viewing conditions. For two other groups of operators, symbol quality was degraded by vertically overprinting one symbol on another. The results indicated that symbol indentification was better for the 7 x 9 matrix than for the 5 x 7 matrix for both good and degraded display conditions. Symbol overprinting greatly impaired the operators' ability to identify special symbols. (Author), See also AD-850 380.

The approaches used in the identification of nonlinear systems from input-output data have normally assumed that the system is almost completely unknown, or that it is completely known with the exception of fixed number of unknown parameters. In this report it is assumed that the input-output relations for the nonlinear dynamical system under study are known with the exception of an unknown function which occurs in this representation. From a finite length of input data and noise corrupted output data techniques are presented which yield a maximum likelihood estimate of an approximation to the unknown function. Computer algorithms based on gradient and Newton-Raphson procedures are developed, and an example is presented. (Author), Doctoral thesis.

This report evaluates the use of the surface dynamics profilometer for measuring runway profiles. This evaluation showed that the surface dynamics profilometer meets all requirements for a system of this type and that for the first time runway profiles can be rapidly and accurately measured without removing the runway from operation for long periods of time. Modern aircraft, due to their large size, structural flexibility and higher take-off and landing speeds, can be excited into a resonant condition by runway roughness. Forces generated by the interaction of the aircraft and the runway can cause damaging stresses both in the aircraft structure and the runway pavement itself. Wavelength components in the runway profile that cause aircraft resonance often are difficult to locate. One method is to use the measured profile of the runway as an input to a computer simulation of the affected aircraft. (Author)

The major objective of the side-looking radar (SLR) Training Study project was to design and develop a programmed instructional course in SLR imagery interpretation that could be used with experienced photointerpreters or interpreter trainees in either a classroom or field setting. The program materials were developed and revised using the 'self-correcting' mechanism. Two major phases of testing were used during the development of each instructional sequence: (1) laboratory and (2) field. (Author)

An iterative procedure is presented which permits the determination of a rational transfer function in the Laplace transform variable s which is optimal with respect to given input and output time-functions. The optimal system of a particular order is defined as the one whose output when subjected to the known input function is nearest in the time integral square sense to the desired output function. The method is thus applicable to a number of problems involving the minimization of an integral square error. (Author)
