This study aimed to find out which countries around the world require psychosocial hazards and workplace violence to be assessed by employers through a mandatory occupational risk assessment process and to compare the type of legislation between countries. We systematically searched the International Labour Office (ILO) "LEGOSH" database for documents published during the period between December 2017 and February 2018. The search included 132 countries, of which 23 were considered as developed and 109 as developing according to the United Nations. Our review showed that most countries (85, i.e., 64%) have not included mandatory psychosocial risk assessment and prevention in their national occupational safety and health legislation. Moreover, we found differences between developed and developing countries, showing that developed countries more frequently have legislative measures. Within developed countries, we also found differences between countries following the Scandinavian model of workplace health and safety culture and other countries. Moreover, in many countries, workplace violence was prohibited only if it involves an offence to moral or religious customs. In conclusion, the marked difference in psychosocial hazards and workplace violence regulations among countries leads to unequal levels of workers' protection, with adverse effects on global health.

Background. Violence at work is one of the major concerns in health care activities. Objective. This study aimed at identifying the prevalence of physical and non-physical violence in a general health care unit in Italy and assessing the relationship between violence and psychosocial factors, so providing a basis for appropriate intervention. Design. Questionnaire-based cross-sectional surveys conducted three times. Methods. All health care workers of a local sanitary unit who were exposed to occupational risks and therefore subjected to medical surveillance at the workplace, were invited to compile a questionnaire containing single item measures concerning workplace violence. The response rate was 75% in 2005, 71% in 2007, and 94% in 2009. The 2009 questionnaire contained the VIF (Violent Incident Form), for the registration of violent incidents, the DCS (demand/control/support) model for job strain, the Colquitt’s 20 items questionnaire for perceived organizational justice, and the GHQ-12 general health questionnaire for the assessment of mental health. Results. One out of 10 workers reported to have been physically assaulted, and one out of three to be harassed at work during the preceding year, in 2009 and in previous surveys. Nurses and physicians were the most exposed jobs,whereas psychiatric, home care and first aid department were the most hazardous services. Workers exposed to non-physical violence had high job strain, low support, low perceived organizational justice, and high psychological distress. Conclusion. Our study shows that health care workers in Italian local health care unit are exposed to violence, and such abuse has detrimental effects. Participatory, multi-level programs are needed to counteract workplace violence and its effects.

OBJECTIVE:: We examined the associations of contractual job insecurity (fixed-term vs permanent employment contract) and subjectively assessed job insecurity with sickness presenteeism among those who had no sickness absences during the study year. METHODS:: Survey data from a sample of 18,454 Public sector employees were gathered in 2004 (the Finnish Public Sector study). RESULTS:: Fixed-term employees were less likely to report working while ill (odds ratio = 0.88, 95% confidence interval = 0.77 to 0.99) than permanent employees. Subjective insecurity was associated with higher levels of working while ill, and this association was stronger among older employees. These results remained after adjustments for demographics, health-related variables, and optimism. CONCLUSIONS:: Our results suggest that subjective job insecurity might be even more important than contractual insecurity when a public sector employee makes the decision to go to work despite feeling ill.

Background: Sense of coherence (SOC) is an individual characteristic related to a positive life orientation leading to effective coping. A weak SOC has been associated with indicators of general morbidity and mortality. However, the relationship between SOC and diabetes has not been studied in prospective design. The present study prospectively examined the relationship between a weak SOC and the incidence of diabetes. Methods: The relationship between a weak SOC and the incidence of diabetes was investigated among 5827 Finnish male employees aged 18–65 at baseline (1986). SOC was measured by questionnaire survey at baseline. Data on prescription diabetes drugs from 1987 to 2004 were obtained from the Drug Imbursement Register held by the Social Insurance Institution. Results: During the follow-up, 313 cases of diabetes were recorded. A weak SOC was associated with a 46% higher risk of diabetes in participants who had been =<50 years of age on entry into the study. This association was independent of age, education, marital status, psychological distress, self-rated health, smoking status, binge drinking and physical activity. No similar association was observed in older employees. Conclusion: The results suggest that besides focusing on well-known risk factors for diabetes, strengthening SOC in employees of =<50 years of age can also play a role in attempts to tackle increasing rates of diabetes.
