Er dient een volledige en integrale LESA opgesteld te worden om inzicht te verkrijgen in de toestand van het gebied en de ecologische condities die nodig zijn om de instandhoudingsdoelen te bereiken. 4. Om effectiviteit van maatregelen in beeld te brengen, maar ook abiotische gegevens te verzamelen die nu ontbreken, is monitoring benodigd. Het opstellen van een kennisprogramma geeft daarbij invulling aan nog niet opgeloste vraagstukken (leemten in kennis). 5. Maatregelen die snel genomen moeten worden zijn: het verminderen van stikstofbelasting, het bevorderen van verstuivingsdynamiek, op beperkte schaal omvormen naaldbos, (intensiever) bestrijden van exoten en verminderen van de harde scheiding met aangrenzende landbouwgebieden (bufferzones).

Stichting Het Flevo-landschap wil een gebied van 152 hectare in het project NoorderwoldEemvallei herontwikkelen. Ze wil onder andere 68,5 hectare (ha) moeras en 36 ha bos realiseren. Dit is compensatie van natuur die aangetast is door de verbreding van de A6 en de aanleg van het windpark Zeewolde. De gemeente Zeewolde wil in dit project ook ‘roodkavels’ realiseren: delen van het gebied waar verschillende functies mogelijk zijn, zoals woningbouw, infrastructuur en verharding. Het beoogde resultaat is een aaneengesloten en gevarieerd moeras- en boslandschap met een mix van natuur, landbouw en bebouwing. In een milieueffectrapport (MER) zijn twee alternatieven onderzocht om het gebied in te richten en zijn de effecten op de leefomgeving in beeld gebracht. De gemeente heeft de Commissie voor de milieueffectrapportage (de Commissie) gevraagd om te adviseren over dit rapport. In haar voorlopige advies oordeelde de Commissie dat in het MER nog essentiële informatie ontbrak. Hierna heeft de gemeente het MER aangevuld. In dit advies spreekt de Commissie zich uit over de juistheid en de volledigheid van het MER en de aanvulling samen.

K3Delta BV wil de bestaande zandwinning Amerika in de gemeente Noordenveld uitbreiden met 40 hectare. Dit vergroot de bestaande zandwinplas met 30 hectare en er wordt 10 hectare ingericht als nieuwe natuur. Het vrijkomende zand zal vooral worden gebruikt als funderingsmateriaal voor woningbouw en infrastructurele projecten. Om de winning mogelijk te maken zijn een ontgrondingsvergunning en een wijziging van het bestemmingsplan nodig. Voor het besluit hierover is een milieueffectrapport (MER) opgesteld. In het toetsingsadvies over dit MER signaleerde de Commissie voor de milieueffectrapportage (hierna ‘de Commissie’) echter dat nog belangrijke informatie in dit MER ontbrak over de hydrologische situatie. Het MER is vervolgens aangevuld. De provincie Drenthe en de gemeente Noordenveld hebben de Commissie gevraagd te adviseren over het MER en de aanvulling daarop. In dit advies spreekt de Commissie voor de milieueffectrapportage zich uit over de juistheid en de volledigheid van het MER en de aanvulling tezamen. In het MER zijn de milieueffecten van de zandwinning beschreven en berekend. De aanvulling op het MER gaat dieper in op mogelijke gevolgen voor de grondwaterstand.

De provincie Drenthe heeft een natuurdoelanalyse (NDA) opgesteld voor het Natura 2000-gebied Drentsche Aagebied. Het ligt ten oosten van Assen, is één van de best bewaarde laaglandbeeksystemen van Europa en behoort tot het Natura 2000-landschap “beekdalen”. De NDA constateert dat er verslechtering is opgetreden in het Drentsche Aa-gebied. Verdere verslechtering wordt, zelfs na uitvoering van alle geplande maatregelen, niet uitgesloten. In de wet staat dat het niet is toegestaan om te wachten met het treffen van maatregelen totdat verdere verslechtering optreedt. Daarom zijn per direct aanvullende (gebieds)maatregelen nodig, dit betreft onder andere het verder verminderen van de stikstofbelasting op het natuurgebied, maatregelen gericht op een natuurlijker functioneren van grond- en oppervlaktewatersysteem en verbeteren van de waterkwaliteit binnen en buiten het gebied (waaronder dat van het beekwater).

Purpose Functional neuroimaging is a powerful and versatile tool to investigate central lower urinary tract (LUT) control. Despite the increasing body of literature there is a lack of comprehensive overviews on LUT control. Thus, we aimed to execute a coordinate based meta-Analysis of all PET and fMRI evidence on descending central LUT control, i.e. pelvic floor muscle contraction (PFMC) and micturition. Materials and methods A systematic literature search of all relevant libraries was performed in August 2020. Coordinates of activity were extracted from eligible studies to perform an activation likelihood estimation (ALE) using a threshold of uncorrected p 0.001. Results 20 of 6858 identified studies, published between 1997 and 2020, were included. Twelve studies investigated PFMC (1xPET, 11xfMRI) and eight micturition (3xPET, 5xfMRI). The PFMC ALE analysis (n = 181, 133 foci) showed clusters in the primary motor cortex, supplementary motor cortex, cingulate gyrus, frontal gyrus, thalamus, supramarginal gyrus, and cerebellum. The micturition ALE analysis (n = 107, 98 foci) showed active clusters in the dorsal pons, including the pontine micturition center, the periaqueductal gray, cingulate gyrus, frontal gyrus, insula and ventral pons. Overlap of PFMC and micturition was found in the cingulate gyrus and thalamus. Conclusions For the first time the involved core brain areas of LUT motor control were determined using ALE. Furthermore, the involved brain areas for PFMC and micturition are partially distinct. Further neuroimaging studies are required to extend this ALE analysis and determine the differences between a healthy and a dysfunctional LUT. This requires standardization of protocols and task-execution.

Revealing the intracellular location of novel therapeutic agents is paramount for the understanding of their effect at the cell ultrastructure level. Here, we apply a novel correlative cryo 3D imaging approach to determine the intracellular fate of a designed protein–nanomaterial hybrid with antifibrotic properties that shows great promise in mitigating myocardial fibrosis. Cryo 3D structured illumination microscopy (cryo-3D-SIM) pinpoints the location and cryo soft X-ray tomography (cryo-SXT) reveals the ultrastructural environment and subcellular localization of this nanomaterial with spatial correlation accuracy down to 70 nm in whole cells. This novel high resolution 3D cryo correlative approach unambiguously locates the nanomaterial after overnight treatment within multivesicular bodies which have been associated with endosomal trafficking events by confocal microscopy. Moreover, this approach allows assessing the cellular response towards the treatment by evaluating the morphological changes induced. This is especially relevant for the future usage of nanoformulations in clinical practices. This correlative super-resolution and X-ray imaging strategy joins high specificity, by the use of fluorescence, with high spatial resolution at 30 nm (half pitch) provided by cryo-SXT in whole cells, without the need of staining or fixation, and can be of particular benefit to locate specific molecules in the native cellular environment in bio-nanomedicine.

In this article, we demonstrate the state-of-the-art of multi-scale topology optimization for 3D structural design. Many structures designed for additive manufacturing consist of a solid shell surrounding repeated microstructures, so-called infill material. We demonstrate the performance of different types of infill microstructures, such as isotropic truss or plate lattice structures and show that the best results can be obtained using spatially varying and oriented orthotropic microstructures. Furthermore, we demonstrate how implicit geometry modeling using nTop platform can help to interpret these multi-scale designs as single-scale manufacturable designs (de-homogenization). More importantly, we demonstrate the small difference in performance between these multi-scale and single-scale designs through extensive numerical testing. The presented method is at least 3 orders of magnitude more efficient compared to standard density-based topology optimization, allowing for high-resolution 3D structures to be obtained on a standard workstation PC.

BACKGROUND: Despite the fact that primary percutaneous catheter drainage has become standard practice, some patients with pancreatic fistula after pancreatoduodenectomy ultimately undergo a relaparotomy. The aim of this study was to compare completion pancreatectomy with a pancreas-preserving procedure in patients undergoing relaparotomy for pancreatic fistula after pancreatoduodenectomy. METHODS: This retrospective cohort study of nine institutions included patients who underwent relaparotomy for pancreatic fistula after pancreatoduodenectomy from 2005-2018. Furthermore, a systematic review and meta-analysis were performed according to the PRISMA guidelines. RESULTS: From 4877 patients undergoing pancreatoduodenectomy, 786 (16 per cent) developed a pancreatic fistula grade B/C and 162 (3 per cent) underwent a relaparotomy for pancreatic fistula. Of these patients, 36 (22 per cent) underwent a completion pancreatectomy and 126 (78 per cent) a pancreas-preserving procedure. Mortality was higher after completion pancreatectomy (20 (56 per cent) versus 40 patients (32 per cent); P = 0.009), which remained after adjusting for sex, age, BMI, ASA score, previous reintervention, and organ failure in the 24 h before relaparotomy (adjusted odds ratio 2.55, 95 per cent c.i. 1.07 to 6.08). The proportion of additional reinterventions was not different between groups (23 (64 per cent) versus 84 patients (67 per cent); P = 0.756). The meta-analysis including 33 studies evaluating 745 patients, confirmed the association between completion pancreatectomy and mortality (Mantel-Haenszel random-effects model: odds ratio 1.99, 95 per cent c.i. 1.03 to 3.84). CONCLUSION: Based on the current data, a pancreas-preserving procedure seems preferable to completion pancreatectomy in patients in whom a relaparotomy is deemed necessary for pancreatic fistula after pancreatoduodenectomy.

Het Shared Research Centre Biorizon liet in een webinar of ‘superieure verf lijm en rubber’ zien dat er vaak groene alternatieven zijn voor chemicaliën die nu nog grotendeels uit fossiele grondstoffen worden gemaakt. Deze zogeheten bio-aromaten zijn niet alleen duurzaam, ze hebben vaak ook betere eigenschappen.

Homogenization-based topology optimization has been shown to be effective but does not directly create mechanical structures. Instead, the method gives a multi-scale description of the optimized design, e.g., lamination thicknesses and directions. To obtain a realizable single-scale design, one can perform a subsequent de-homogenization step. This is done by converting the lamination directions to integrable vector fields from which it is possible to compute a parameterization of the domain. Unfortunately, however, singularities often make it impossible to find integrable vector fields that align with lamination directions. We present a short introduction to homogenization-based topology optimization followed by an overview of different types of singularities and how they impinge on the problem. Based on this, we propose a singularity aware de-homogenization pipeline, where we use a method for vector field combing which produces consistent labeling of the lamination directions but also introduces necessary seams in the domain. We demonstrate how methods from computer graphics can subsequently be used to compute the final parameterization from which the mechanical structure can easily be extracted. We demonstrate the method on several test cases.

This work addresses questions about the embodied narratives during a collaborative inquiry involving 4 groups of women and professionals in two residential mother-and-child and whose outcomes were unforeseeable. In the epistemological framework of Embodied Cognition (Shapiro, 2010), the body is seen as a center for the researcher to give a shape to her own knowing and feeling. So, knowing through sense brings to an aesthetic positioning, redefining both reflexivity and encounter, in searching with subjects and in contexts. The desire to be more sensitive to the body, and to the embodied and embedded relationships that are constantly built in Adult Education, brought me - a doctoral student – to share a common path of research, whose scope is to interrogate the role of the researcher in the learning experience

With the goal of identifying optimal elastic single-scale microstructures for multiple loading situations, the paper shows that qualified starting guesses, based on knowledge of optimal rank-3 laminates, significantly improves chances of convergence to near optimal designs. Rank-3 laminates, optimal for a given set of anisotropic loading conditions, are approximated on a single scale using a simple mapping approach. We demonstrate that these mapped microstructures perform relatively close to theoretical energy bounds. Microstructures with a performance even closer to the bounds can be obtained by using the approximated rank-3 structures in a further step as starting guesses for inverse homogenization problems. Due to the nonconvex nature of inverse homogenization problems, the starting guesses based on rank-3 laminates outperform classical starting guesses with homogeneous or random material distributions. Furthermore, the obtained single-scale microstructures are relatively simple, which enhances manufacturability. Results, obtained for a wide range of loading cases, indicate that microstructures with performance within 5–8% of the theoretical optima can be guarantied, as long as feature sizes are not limited by minimium size constraints.

Clinically, two major categories of lower urinary tract symptoms can be defined: storage symptoms such as incontinence and urgency, and voiding symptoms such as feeling of incomplete bladder emptying and slow urinary stream. Urgency to void with or without incontinence is called overactive bladder (OAB). Slow urinary stream, hesitancy, and straining to void with the feeling of incomplete bladder emptying are often called underactive bladder (UAB). The underlying causes of OAB or UAB can be either non-neurogenic (also referred to as idiopathic) and neurogenic, for example due to spinal cord injury or multiple sclerosis. OAB and UAB can be treated conservatively by lifestyle intervention or medication. In the case that conservative treatment does not provide sufficient benefit, electrical stimulation can be used. Sacral neurostimulation or neuromodulation (SNM) is offered as a third-line therapy to patients with non-neurogenic OAB or UAB. In SNM, the third or fourth sacral nerve root is stimulated and after a test period, a neuromodulator is implanted in the buttock. Until recently only a non-rechargeable neuromodulator was approved for clinical use. However, nowadays, a rechargeable sacral neuromodulator is also on the market, with similar safety and effectiveness to the non-rechargeable SNM system. The rechargeable device was approved for full body 1.5T and 3T MRI in Europe in February 2019. In this article, we propose a novel method to obtain a near-optimal frame structure, based on the solution of a homogenization-based topology optimization model. The presented approach exploits the equivalence between Michell’s problem of least-weight trusses and a compliance minimization problem using optimal rank-2 laminates in the low volume fraction limit. In a fully automated procedure, a discrete structure is extracted from the homogenization-based continuum model. This near-optimal structure is post-optimized as a frame, where the bending stiffness is continuously decreased, to allow for a final design that resembles a truss structure. Numerical experiments show excellent behavior of the method, where the final designs are close to analytical optima, and obtained in less than 10 minutes, for various levels of detail, on a standard PC.

Op 13 maart 2015 vond in het Fochteloërveen een grote brand plaats, waarbij ongeveer honderd hectare aan heidevegetatie in vlammen opging (Nijhof & Bouma, 2015). De verbrande heide beslaat een groot deel van het onderzoeksgebied, waar reeds enkele jaren door de auteur onderzoek wordt gedaan naar de daar aanwezige adderpopulatie. Al snel rees de vraag wat voor effecten de brand zou hebben op deze populatie. In de literatuur bleek geen informatie voor handen te zijn waarmee deze vraag beantwoord kan worden. Hierop werd besloten om het populatieonderzoek in dit gebied deels op deze vraag toe te spitsen. Hierbij is de focus gelegd op zowel de korte- als de langetermijneffecten.

RESULTS: High frequent sequential ultrasound images were successfully recorded during voiding in 45 patients. The decorrelation (decrease in correlation) between subsequent ultrasound images was higher in patients with bladder outlet obstruction than in unobstructed patients and healthy volunteers. ROC analysis resulted in an AUC of 0.96, 95% specificity and 88% sensitivity. A linear relationship was fitted to the decorrelation values as a function of the degree of obstruction represented by the bladder outlet obstruction index, measured in the separate pressure flow studies. CONCLUSIONS: It is possible to noninvasively diagnose bladder outlet obstruction using the ultrasound decorrelation technique.
