Vitt snus ökande popularitet har skapat oro för dess påverkan på immunförsvaret. I föreliggande studie undersöks nikotinets påverkan på uttrycket av interleukin-2-receptorn alfa (IL-2R-alfa eller CD25) hos CD4+ T-celler under in vitro-stimulering. Tidigare studier indikerar negativa effekter såsom minskat antingen upptag hos antigenpresenterande celler, cytokinproduktion och uttryck av receptorer som CD28 och CTLA-4, vilka är viktiga för CD4+ T-cellernas aktivering, differentiering samt bromsning av aktiveringen. Andra studier har visat att alfa-4- samt alfa-7-nikotinerg acetylkolinreceptorer uttrycks på CD4+ T-celler, vilket i sin tur har visat sig påverka cytokin produktionen i närvaro av nikotin under stimulering. CD25 är en viktig receptor vid aktiveringen av T-celler och är överuttryckt vid exempelvis akut T-cells leukemi (ATL). Målet med denna studie är att förstå hur nikotin kan påverka CD25-uttrycket och därmed påverka immunförsvaret och effektiviteten av terapier. Med hjälp av flödescytometri och kvantitativ polymeraskedjereaktion (qPCR) kunde en tydlig skillnad detekteras mellan nikotin/PHA-stimulering och enbart PHA-stimulering hos en donator jämfört med de andra donatorerna. Metoderna inkluderar cellseparation, stimulering med fytohemagglutinin (PHA) i närvaro av nikotin, analys av uttrycket CD25 med flödescytometri och analys av genuttryck av CD25 med qPCR. The results showed varying responses among three donors, with a clear difference between nicotine/PHA and PHA stimulation alone for one donor compared to the others. This study highlights potential effects of nicotine on the immune system and underscores the need for further investigations to understand the mechanisms behind this.

In this contribution we investigate the online space of pro-migration mobilization in Belgium. First we identify actors of the mobilization on Facebook then leverage their discursive practices to uncover cognitive and structural patterns and map them upon a multi-dimensional space of mobilization.In reaction to the refugee reception crisis of 2015, citizen movements sprouted up over Europe in solidarity with the struggles of the migrants. These new movements worked alongside traditional actors such as trade unions, associations, and universities. However, in Belgium, citizen activist discourses and actions reproduced, and even reinforced, the institutional distinction between 'asylum seekers' and 'economic' migrants.How do these new actors blend into the Belgian activist scene? And how have traditional actors dealt with divergent philosophies and mobilisation repertoires? The present contribution addresses the reconfiguration of the French-speaking Belgian activist scene by analysing a network of 116 Facebook pages, which support migrants, and their publications between 2014 and 2018 (38 000 posts, 2.4 million words).Conducting an analysis of such an amount of data requires a multidisciplinary approach which efficiently combines both quantitative and qualitative methods. For this purpose, our methodology relies on three levels of analysis of varying granularity: a network analysis, a computational linguistics model, and a discourse analysis. First, we construct a network made of publications shared between pages to identify community structure and actors' prominence. Second, by means of a probabilistic topic model, we analyse the whole corpus and its thematic trends to extract discursive similarity between actors and its evolution over time. Third, we rely on discourse analysis to focus on nouns used to designate human groups (such as "movement") and their members (such as "refugees"). Fabeae legumes such as pea and faba bean form symbiotic nodules with a large diversity of soil Rhizobium leguminosarum symbiovar viciae (Rlv) bacteria. However, bacteria competitive to form root nodules (CFN) are generally not the most efficient to fix dinitrogen, resulting in a decrease in legume crop yields. Here, we investigate differential selection by host plants on the diversity of Rlv. A large collection of Rlv was collected by nodule trapping with pea and faba bean from soils at five European sites. Representative genomes were sequenced. In parallel, diversity and abundance of Rlv were estimated directly in these soils using metabarcoding. The CFN of isolates was measured with both legume hosts. Pea/faba bean CFN were associated to Rlv genomic regions. Variations of bacterial pea and/or faba bean CFN explained the differential abundance of Rlv genotypes in pea and faba bean nodules. No evidence was found for genetic association between CFN and variations in the core genome, but variations in specific regions of the nod locus, as well as in other plasmid loci, were associated with differences in CFN. These findings shed light on the genetic control of CFN in Rlv and emphasise the importance of host plants in controlling Rhizobium diversity.

The lifetimes of the first excited 2+, 4+, and 6+ states in Zr98 were measured with the recoil-distance Doppler shift method in an experiment performed at GANIL. Excited states in Zr98 were populated using the fission reaction between a 6.2 MeV/u U238 beam and a Be9 target. The γ rays were detected with the EXOGAM array in correlation with the fission fragments identified by mass and atomic number in the VAMOS++ spectrometer. Our result shows a very small B(E2;21+→01+) value in Zr98, thereby confirming the very sudden onset of collectivity at N=60. The experimental results are compared to large-scale Monte Carlo shell model and beyond-mean-field calculations. The present results indicate the coexistence of two additional deformed shapes in this nucleus along with the spherical ground state. © 2018 American Physical Society.

Energy differences between analogue states in the T = 1/2 Mg-23-Na-23 mirror nuclei have been measured along the rotational yrast bands. This allows us to search for effects arising from isospin-symmetrybreaking interactions (ISB) and/or shape changes. Data are interpreted in the shell model framework following the method successfully applied to nuclei in the f(7/2) shell. It is shown that the introduction of a schematic ISB interaction of the same type of that used in the f(7/2) shell is needed to reproduce the data. An alternative novel description, applied here for the first time, relies on the use of an effective interaction deduced from a realistic charge-dependent chiral nucleon-nucleon potential. This analysis provides two important results: (i) The mirror energy differences give direct insight into the nuclear skin; (ii) the skin changes along the rotational bands are strongly correlated with the difference between the neutron and proton occupations of the s(1/2) "halo" orbit.

Comment comprendre la condition corporelle du sujet humain dans le champ juridique de la société occidentale contemporaine ? L’encadrement institutionnel, encore présent jusqu’au milieu du siècle dernier, s’effrite sous nos yeux dans les domaines de la bioéthique. Alliance, vie, sexe, fécondité, mort passent en effet de plus en plus sous l’empire du sujet qui en dispose, le droit se comprenant alors comme instituant l’égalité des citoyens par les libertés qu’ils sont autorisés à prendre à l’égard de leur corps. L’ouvrage décrit cette évolution à partir de documents principalement belges, français et européens. Puis il entame, à l’aide des trois personnes verbales je, tu, il, une réflexion philosophique sur la place qu’une telle transformation réserve encore à l’altérité : si la science a remplacé la richesse du symbole par l’objectivité du il dans l’intelligence des corps, et si la volonté subjective du je a pris la place de la ‘loi naturelle’ dans la formulation du droit, où est passé le tu qui désigne l’autre ? En d’autres termes, comment la loi qui régit les corps relèvera-t-elle encore le défi de l’intersubjectivité ? Pour radicaliser le propos, l’ouvrage aborde le débat mené, dans ces questions de vie, d’amour et de mort, entre la référence chrétienne et sa contestation libérale. En deçà des évidences de la liberté et de l’égalité, l’insistance religieuse sur la fraternité, -sans rien renier de la nécessaire liberté de conscience garantie par l’État laïc-, fournit une contribution propre au débat bioéthique en délivrant une parole de raison sur la donnée du corps.

Depuis le début des années 1980, on constate une tendance croissante des services spécialisés à quitter leur <<<> habitat naturel <>>> dans le centre des grandes zones métropolitaines pour se relocaliser dans des zones suburbaines. Ce phénomène apparaît clairement aux Etats-Unis dans le rapide développement des edge cities, mais il est plus discret en France. L'objectif de ce papier est d'analyser les raisons et les formes de ce phénomène. D'abord, sur les bases théoriques de l'économie géographique et de l'économie des villes, nous souhaitons identifier les principales forces d'agglomération qui poussent les services aux entreprises à se localiser dans les grandes villes. Elles sont liées d'une part à des contraintes de production relatives aux échanges d'informations et aux besoins en main d'oeuvre qualifiée, et d'autre part aux exigences de la demande. Ensuite, nous essayons d'expliquer le récent mouvement de déconcentration des services supérieurs aux entreprises. Ce processus résulte de forces classiques de dispersion comme la congestion et la concurrence pour l'occupation du sol, mais aussi de forces spécifiques liées au développement des nouvelles technologies de la communication, au mode de vie des travailleurs et au cycle du produit. Lorsque, à la suite des autres sciences sociales, les économistes s'intéressent au mécanisme de la confiance, ils mettent en général au premier plan la recherche d'une justification ou d'un fondement au faire confiance, le point de départ implicite du processus auquel ils pensent étant la confiance zéro ou la défiance. Au contraire, le présent papier, s'inspirant de la philosophie de Popper, propose, comme point de départ à la confiance, une décision individuelle associée à ce que Popper appelle une conjecture, c'est-à-dire une sorte de théorie, sur la façon dont celui auquel on fait (potentiellement) confiance fonctionne. La conjecture ne requiert pas de justification mais seulement le test de ses implications. A son tour, la décision de faire ou de ne pas faire confiance n'est pas le reflet mécanique ou passif du degré de corroboration de la conjecture, à fortiori d'un quelconque degré de croyance ou de probabilité. Le rôle économique international d'un certain nombre de grandes villes s'accroît au fur et à mesure qu'elles concentrent des activités supérieures. Ce processus de métropolisation est la conséquence de l'évolution vers l'économie post-industrielle marquée par le développement des services et de l'information. Il résulte de la combinaison d'interactions de proximité et d'interactions globales et il se manifeste par une configuration spatiale interne particulière et par une aire d'influence très étendue. Depuis la période de transition, la Pologne a connu une croissance des services, et plus particulièrement des services supérieurs, plus rapide que les pays de l'UE, comme par un effet de rattrapage. Une part importante de ces services est localisée dans l'hyper-centre de Varsovie, à Śródmieście, comme l'a montré Bourdeau-Lepage dans un précédent papier. A partir de plusieurs sources de données polonaises, principalement sur la géographie de l'emploi par secteur, sur la localisation des firmes et sur le développement des services supérieurs spécialisés, nous proposons d'analyser de façon détaillée la concentration des fonctions métropolitaines à Varsovie et de déterminer l'éventuelle émergence d'un processus de métropolisation. Sur la base de l'idée que l'organisation interne des fonctions supérieures dans une métropole est étroitement liée à son attractivité mondiale, nous comparons la métropolisation interne de Varsovie avec sa métropolisation externe, c'est-à-dire son statut international évalué par sa situation dans les réseaux de transport et par son attractivité en termes d'investissements et d'activités culturelles. Aujourd'hui, les activités qui font la ville se transforment. Les activités de services financiers, juridiques et de la recherche prennent une part de plus en plus importante dans les activités urbaines. Ces activités relèvent des fonctions de conception, de décision et de contrôle. Or elles utilisent beaucoup de capital humain et de haute technologie : cela les rend fortement consommatrices et productrices d'informations. Mais à l'ère de l'information, la concentration de ces activités dans les villes peut apparaître paradoxale. Si ces activités sont agglomérées, c'est qu'il existe un besoin de proximité pour échanger des informations. Or, aujourd'hui, grâce aux technologies de la communication, on peut transmettre des informations sans que le face à face soit nécessaire. Dans ces conditions, il convient se s'interroger sur les liens entre échanges d'informations, agglomération et dispersion. Le but de ce papier est de proposer des pistes de réflexions sur le rôle des échanges d'informations dans l'évolution urbaine. Il s'agit alors de différencier les interactions informationnelles selon leur sensibilité aux progrès des technologies et d'identifier leur impact agglomératif. D'un intérêt encore récent pour [analyse économique, la diffusion des Technologies de l Information et de la Communication (TIC) dans les économies modernes relance un débat déjà ancien sur les liens entre la croissance, la productivité et l'emploi. De nombreuses études empiriques sur l'impact de ces nouvelles technologies en terme de productivité, notamment de productivité du travail et de productivité totale des facteurs, débouchent sur des résultats ambigus. C 'est ce que l'on appelle aujourd'hui le « paradoxe de productivité ». Le principal objectif du travail présenté ici est de donner une vue d'ensemble, d'une manière non exhaustive et modeste, sur les différentes approches économétriques qui analysent les conséquences du développement des TIC sur la productivité. La conclusion de ce travail nous inspire deux sortes de commentaires. Tout d'abord, les réponses apportées sur la question du décalage des résultats obtenus sur données micro-économiques de ceux obtenus sur données agrégées ne sont pas suffisantes. D autres mécanismes, plus complexes, peuvent expliquer le paradoxe de productivité. Enfin, le domaine empirique reste pauvre et il existe encore beaucoup d'études à réaliser sur le thème des liens entre les TIC et la performance des entreprises., 13 p., ref. bib. : 15 ref.

Le papier définit un extrémiste comme un individu dont le point idéal dans l'espace des questions politiques est extrême le long d'une des dimensions et un monomaniaque (sans connotation péjorative) comme un individu aux yeux duquel une dimension a plus de poids, est plus saillante, que les autres. Ce phénomène permet de rendre compte de certaines des caractéristiques observables des mouvements extrémistes. Mirror energy differences (MED) are a direct consequence of isospin symmetry breaking. Moreover, the study of MED has proved to give valuable information of several nuclear structure properties. We present the results of an experiment performed in GANIL to study the MED in mirror nuclei Mg-23-Na-23 up to high spin. The experimental values are compared with state-of-the-art shell model calculations. This permits to enlighten several nuclear structure properties, such as the way in which the nucleons alignment proceeds, the radius variation with J, the role of the spin-orbit interaction and the importance of isospin symmetry breaking terms of nuclear origin., QC 20170508

Influence of the conditions for aerobic oxidation of Mn2+(aq) catalysed by the MnxEFG protein complex on the morphology, structure and reactivity of the resulting biogenic manganese oxides (MnOx ) is explored. Physical characterisation of MnOx includes scanning and transmission electron microscopy, and X-ray photoelectron and K-edge Mn, Fe X-ray absorption spectroscopy. This characterisation reveals that the MnOx materials share the structural features of birnessite, yet differ in the degree of structural disorder. Importantly, these biogenic products exhibit strikingly different morphologies that can be easily controlled. Changing the substrate-to-protein ratio produces MnOx either as nm-thin sheets, or rods with diameters below 20 nm, or a combination of the two. Mineralisation in solutions that contain Fe2+(aq) makes solids with significant disorder in the structure, while the presence of Ca2+(aq) facilitates formation of more ordered materials. The (photo)oxidation and (photo)electrocatalytic capacity of the MnOx minerals is examined and correlated with their structural properties.

Dye-sensitized photocathodes have been observed on several occasions to sustain light-driven H 2 generation without intentionally introduced catalysts. Herein, plausible mechanisms addressing this phenomenon are probed by a combination of long-term photoelectrochemical measurements with concurrent gas chromatography, transient absorption spectroscopy, and inductively coupled mass spectrometry using a perylenemonoimide-sexithiophene-triphenylamine (PMI-6T-TPA) sensitized NiO electrode. The experimental evidence obtained discounts the possibility for direct reduction of hydrogen by the dye and demonstrates that the availability of interfaces between dye molecules and any electrically disconnected NiO particles exposed to the electrolyte solution is critical for photoelectrocatalytic H 2 generation. These interfaces are postulated to serve as photoactive sites for the formation of a hydrogen evolution catalyst, e.g., metallic nickel, which can accept photogenerated electrons from the excited dye molecules. The Ni 0 catalyst can form via photoelectroreduction of Ni 2+ , which has been found to slowly dissolve from the NiO support into the solutions during the photoelectrochemical measurements. Additionally, dependence of the H 2 generation rate on the anion within the electrolyte has been identified, with the highest rates of 35-40 nmol h -1 cm -2 achieved with acetate. The origin of this dependence remains unsolved at this stage but is clearly demonstrated to be not associated with the different rates of dissolution of NiO, the presence of other transition metal contaminants, nor electronic impacts of the anion on the NiO valence band. Overall, the results herein demonstrate that the effects of the chemical nature of the electrolyte, metallic nickel deposited from dissolved Ni 2+ , and availability of the interfaces between disconnected NiO and adsorbed dye should be considered when interpreting the photoelectrocatalytic performance of dye-sensitized photocathodes for

Lifetimes of excited states in Y-99, Y-101, Nb-101, Nb-103, and Nb-105 were measured in an experiment using the recoil distance Doppler shift method at GANIL (Grand Accelerateur National d'Ions Lourds). The neutron-rich nuclei were produced in fission reactions between a U-238 beam and a Be-9 target. Prompt gamma rays were measured with the EXOGAM array and correlated with fission fragments that were identified in mass and atomic number with the VAMOS++ spectrometer. The measured lifetimes, together with branching ratios, provide B(M1) and B(E2) values for the strongly coupled rotational bands built on the [422] 5/2(+) ground state in the Y and Nb nuclei with neutron number N >= 60. The comparison of the experimental results with triaxial particle-rotor calculations provides information about the evolution of the nuclear shape in this mass region.

Smartjardin est un projet imaginé et coordonné par Elizabeth Chosson, doublement lauréat de l'appel à projet annuel de l'Université Numérique des Sciences de la Santé et du Sport (UNF3S).Initié par plusieurs universités, le concept a pour objectif d’offrir, aux visiteurs de jardin de plantes médicinales, la possibilité d’enrichir leurs observations grâce à des ressources disponibles en ligne. Celles-ci sont facilement accessibles par décryptage, à l’aide d’un smartphone ou d’une tablette, d’un QR code placé sur des étiquettes à l’endroit même de l’observation de la plante.Le site web, https://smartjardin.univ-rouen.fr/, présente actuellement 173 fiches-espèces. Elles concernent des plantes médicinales et toxiques, des espèces largement représentées dans les jardins botaniques des Facultés universitaires. Toutes ont été rédigées ou corrigées par des spécialistes de la discipline (botanistes ou pharmaciens) des universités partenaires du projet.Chaque fiche-espèce comporte deux volets :le premier reprend une photographie, le biotope, la répartition géographique et la description succincte de la plante; le second comprend une rubrique « Tout savoir » proposant une description complète de la plante et de sa famille, les confusions, les usages médicinaux, les autres usages, une planche d’herbier et un clin d’œil anecdotique.Ce projet est par ailleurs conçu comme une plate-forme documentaire partagée, validée scientifiquement et enrichie par les différentes universités associées. Le 4 juillet 2017 a été inauguré le premier smartjardin de Belgique au jardin Jean-Massart de l'université libre de Bruxelles qui désormais compte une centaine d'étiquettes équipées de QR code dans la très belle collection de plantes médicinales du jardin.La collection de plantes médicinales de l’ULB est une des plus importantes de Belgique. Water limitation in agronomic soils is often partial but lead locally to the suppression of symbiotic activity and therefore to reduction of N acquisition by the plant. A split-root system was developed in pea to evaluate the capacities of Pea-Rhizobium leguminosarum bv viciae (Rlv) symbiotic associations to compensate a local reduction of water availability. Root systems are split in two parts watered separately. Soil water content was monitored. Water limitation was exerted by stopping watering of a half root system. Arrest of nitrogen fixation is very rapidly observed in root directly exposed to water stress. This local and partial water limitation of the plant triggered a systemic signaling on well-watered roots of the same plant. The compensatory response occurs by increasing nodule biomass (and therefore nitrogen fixation capacities) of these roots not directly exposed to the water limitation. In preliminary experiments pea plants were inoculated with a reference Rlv strain. Response of and root and nodule development that compensate the local water limitation was confirmed. Interestingly, the compensatory response varies according to the Rlv strain as another Rlv strain, displaying similar nitrogen fixation efficiency in watered conditions, was not able to promote equivalent compensatory response. This experimental system has been used as a screen to select Rlv strains able to promote rapid compensatory responses to water stress.

En Belgique francophone, la formation en alternance débuta en 1984 dans l’enseignement secondaire qualifiant et se retrouve à présent dans l’offre d’enseignement supérieur des hautes écoles et des universités depuis quelques années. Ces masters en alternance universitaires (niveau 7 du cadre européen des certifications) s’appuient sur un apprentissage expérientiel se structurant à partir des formations en entreprise prévues pendant le cycle d’études. Cet apprentissage s’entend comme un processus continu selon lequel la connaissance se crée par transformation de l’expérience (Kolb, 1984), et s’apparente à une transaction entre un individu et son environnement au cours de laquelle une signification se détache (Bell, 1995). Comment évaluer ce type d’apprentissage où, en première analyse, chaque apprenant est le démiurge de sa connaissance ?En considérant les éléments contextuels de l’organisation des études, il ressort que l’évaluation se fixe comme véritable enjeu :de mesurer la performance du/de la stagiaire en définissant des instruments et des critères d’évaluation, d’accompagner méthodologiquement les différents acteurs, de déterminer et circonscrire les rôles pédagogiques, ainsi que de juger du développement de compétences professionnelles au cours d’un processus formatif inscrit dans une dynamique de production en entreprise. Ces considérations pédagogiques ont fait l’objet d’applications pratiques dans le cadre de la création d’un master en sciences du travail en alternance lancé par l’Université libre de Bruxelles et destiné, a priori, à des demandeurs d’emploi inoccupés (DEI). Concrètement, il semble aussi opportun de s’interroger sur la pertinence de l’apprentissage expérientiel comme instrument d’évaluation et d’émancipation pour accompagner les DEI dans leur recherche d’emploi. Le marché des Old Master Paintings - dit ‘marché de la connaissance’ - offre un cadre analytique opportun pour interroger la prescription culturelle appliquée au marché de l’art classé, dès lors que ce segment engage dans une relation réciproque trois champs distincts :1) le secteur marchand, le milieu académique (recherche, expertise) et 3), le public du marché. Particulièrement concernés par les récentes avancées scientifiques en matière d’authentification des maîtres anciens, les acteurs du marché ont été contraints de se tourner vers des méthodes de cataloguing plus sophistiquées en vue de réduire l’asymétrie d’information et l’incertitude autour d’une production de qualité variable, dont la faible représentativité sur le marché (4% en 2015) témoigne du désintérêt croissant de la part du public. Cette professionnalisation du marché, corollaire au progrès de la recherche en histoire de l’art, pose néanmoins question sur la faculté de ce dernier à gérer et à promouvoir ce patrimoine, dans un contexte de raréfaction des chefs-d’œuvre anciens. En tant que gatekeepers du marché de l’art, les maisons de ventes ont pourtant longtemps contribué à former un public d’amateurs et de collectionneurs au goût d’une époque. Au 21e siècle, dans un contexte où les normes traditionnelles d’appréciation de la qualité artistique ont été bousculées par l’avènement du paradigme de l’art contemporain, il convient de s’interroger sur la manière dont les prescripteurs du marché se positionnent vis-à-vis de la peinture ancienne. A partir d’une recherche empirique qualitative (analyse de corpus) portant sur un échantillon de notices de catalogues publiées en 2015 par deux maisons de ventes internationales, cette communication entend étudier les mécanismes de récupération du discours scientifique par le marché, à des fins croisées d’éducation et de prescription, en concentrant les recherches sur les œuvres flamandes, toutes catégories d’attribution confondues. Several studies have suggested an increased risk of lymphoma among workers exposed to meat, without conclusive evidence. We conducted a multicenter case-control study during 1998–2004 in the Czech Republic, France, Germany, Ireland, Italy and Spain, including 2,007 cases of non-Hodgkin lymphoma, 339 cases of Hodgkin lymphoma and 2,462 controls. We collected detailed information on occupational history and assessed exposure to meat in general and several types of meat via expert assessment of the questionnaires. The odds ratio (OR) of non-Hodgkin lymphoma for ever occupational exposure to meat was 1.18 (95% confidence interval [CI] 0.95–1.46), that for exposure to beef meat was 1.22 (95% CI 0.90–1.67), and that for exposure to chicken meat was 1.19 (95% CI 0.91–1.55). The ORs were higher among workers with longer duration of exposure. An increased risk among workers exposed to beef meat was mainly apparent for diffuse large B-cell lymphoma (OR 1.49, 95%CI 0.96–2.33), chronic lymphocytic leukemia (OR 1.35, 95% CI 0.78–2.34) and multiple myeloma (OR 1.40, 95%CI 0.67–2.94). The latter 2 types were also associated with exposure to chicken meat (OR 1.55, 95% CI 1.01–2.37, and OR 2.05, 95%CI 1.14–3.69). Follicular lymphoma and T-cell lymphoma, as well as Hodgkin lymphoma did not show any increase in risk. Dye-sensitised photocathodes promoting hydrogen evolution are usually coupled to a catalyst to improve the reaction rate. Herein, we report on the first successful integration of a heterogeneous metal particulate catalyst, viz., Pt aggregates electrodeposited from acidic solutions on the surface of a NiO-based photocathode sensitised with a p-type perylenemonoimid-sexithiophene-triphenylamine dye (PMI-6T-TPA). The platinised dye-NiO electrodes generate photocurrent density of ca -0.03 mA cm-2 (geom.) with 100% faradaic efficiency for the H2 evolution at 0.059 V vs. reversible hydrogen electrode under 1 sun visible light irradiation (AM1.5G, 100 mW cm-2, > 400 nm) for more than 10 hours in 0.1 M H2SO4 (aq.). The Pt-free dye-NiO and dye-free Pt-modified NiO cathodes show no photo-electrocatalytic hydrogen evolution under these conditions. The performance of these Pt-modified PMI-6T-TPA-based photoelectrodes compares well to that of previously reported dye-sensitised photocathodes for H2 evolution.

Neutron-rich Sr-96,Sr-98 isotopes have been investigated by safe Coulomb excitation of radioactive beams at the REX-ISOLDE facility. Reduced transition probabilities and spectroscopic quadrupole moments have been extracted from the differential Coulomb excitation cross sections. These results allow, for the first time, the drawing of definite conclusions about the shape coexistence of highly deformed prolate and spherical configurations. In particular, a very small mixing between the coexisting states is observed, contrary to other mass regions where strong mixing is present. Experimental results have been compared to beyond-mean-field calculations using the Gogny D1S interaction in a five-dimensional collective Hamiltonian formalism, which reproduce the shape change at N = 60.

Lifetimes of short-lived excited states in a wide range of neutron-rich fission fragments were measured using the recoil distance Doppler shift (RDDS) technique, which was applied to fusion-fission reactions in inverse kinematics for the first time. The fission fragments were identified event-by-event in mass, charge, and atomic number using the VAMOS magnetic spectrometer at GANIL. Gamma rays originating from the fission fragments were measured with the EXOGAM array of Ge Clover detectors around the target position. Using a degrader, the change in the Doppler shift of the gamma ray allows the application of the RDDS method. Details of the experimental technique will be discussed and the status for the ongoing analysis for odd-mass yttrium isotopes will be presented.

The structure of neutron-rich Sr-96,Sr-98 nuclei was investigated by low-energy safe Coulomb excitation of radioactive beams at the REX-ISOLDE facility, CERN, with the MINIBALL spectrometer. A rich set of transitional and diagonal E2 matrix elements, including those for non-yrast structures, has been extracted from the differential Coulomb-excitation cross sections. The results support the scenario of a shape transition at N = 60, giving rise to the coexistence of a highly deformed prolate and a spherical configuration in Sr-98, and are compared to predictions from several theoretical calculations. The experimental data suggest a significant contribution of the triaxal degree of freedom in the ground state of both isotopes. In addition, experimental information on low-lying states in Rb-98 has been obtained.

[EN] The aim of this paper is to theoretically discuss the inferential logics of sense attribution to everyday objects. Such discussion takes part of our attempt to explore the possibility of development of a method for systematic research and analysis of the relationship established between users and artifacts in their context of use and specific circumstances. Taking into account the notions of sensible effects, practical bearings, and sense, the argumentation, supported by the Peircean pragmatism, tries to frame their connections with processes of logical mental mediations that emerge when design-agents (e.g., users, designers, and design researchers) deal with everyday objects. The contribution and final considerations of this paper may address issues from the fields of design (practically) and semiotics and design (theoretically and empirically) through possibly enlarging the understanding of the mediation processes, so-called inferential logics of sense attribution.

Graphene and graphene oxide receive much attention these years, because they add attractive properties to a wide range of applications and products. Several studies have shown toxicological effects of other carbon-based nanomaterials such as carbon black nanoparticles and carbon nanotubes in vitro and in vivo. Here, we report in-depth physicochemical characterization of three commercial graphene materials, one graphene oxide (GO) and two reduced graphene oxides (rGO) and assess cytotoxicity and genotoxicity in the murine lung epithelial cell line FE1. The studied GO and rGO mainly consisted of 2–3 graphene layers with lateral sizes of 1–2 µm. GO had almost equimolar content of C, O, and H while the two rGO materials had lower contents of oxygen with C/O and C/H ratios of 8 and 12.8, respectively. All materials had low levels of endotoxin and low levels of inorganic impurities, which were mainly sulphur, manganese, and silicon. GO generated more ROS than the two rGO materials, but none of the graphene materials influenced cytotoxicity in terms of cell viability and cell proliferation after 24 hr. Furthermore, no genotoxicity was observed using the alkaline comet assay following 3 or 24 hr of exposure. We demonstrate that chemically pure, few-layered GO and rGO with comparable lateral size (> 1 µm) do not induce significant cytotoxicity or genotoxicity in FE1 cells at relatively high doses (5–200 µg/ml).
