1. A$^3$PIM: An Automated, Analytic and Accurate Processing-in-Memory Offloader

Abstract

The performance gap between memory and processor has grown rapidly. Consequently, the energy and wall-clock time costs associated with moving data between the CPU and main memory predominate the overall computational cost. The Processing-in-Memory (PIM) paradigm emerges as a promising architecture that mitigates the need for extensive data movements by strategically positioning computing units proximate to the memory. Despite the abundant efforts devoted to building a robust and highly-available PIM system, identifying PIM-friendly segments of applications poses significant challenges due to the lack of a comprehensive tool to evaluate the intrinsic memory access pattern of the segment. To tackle this challenge, we propose A$^3$PIM: an Automated, Analytic and Accurate Processing-in-Memory offloader. We systematically consider the cross-segment data movement and the intrinsic memory access pattern of each code segment via static code analyzer. We evaluate A$^3$PIM across a wide range of real-world workloads including GAP and PrIM benchmarks and achieve an average speedup of 2.63x and 4.45x (up to 7.14x and 10.64x) when compared to CPU-only and PIM-only executions, respectively., Comment: 6 pages, 4 figures, accepted for presentation at Design, Automation and Test in Europe Conference | The European Event for Electronic System Design & Test (DATE 2024), conference to be held in March 2024

2. Pruner: An Efficient Cross-Platform Tensor Compiler with Dual Awareness

Abstract

Tensor program optimization on Deep Learning Accelerators (DLAs) is critical for efficient model deployment. Although search-based Deep Learning Compilers (DLCs) have achieved significant performance gains compared to manual methods, they still suffer from the persistent challenges of low search efficiency and poor cross-platform adaptability. In this paper, we propose $\textbf{Pruner}$, following hardware/software co-design principles to hierarchically boost tensor program optimization. Pruner comprises two primary components: a Parameterized Static Analyzer ($\textbf{PSA}$) and a Pattern-aware Cost Model ($\textbf{PaCM}$). The former serves as a hardware-aware and formulaic performance analysis tool, guiding the pruning of the search space, while the latter enables the performance prediction of tensor programs according to the critical data-flow patterns. Furthermore, to ensure effective cross-platform adaptation, we design a Momentum Transfer Learning ($\textbf{MTL}$) strategy using a Siamese network, which establishes a bidirectional feedback mechanism to improve the robustness of the pre-trained cost model. The extensive experimental results demonstrate the effectiveness and advancement of the proposed Pruner in various tensor program tuning tasks across both online and offline scenarios, with low resource overhead. 3. Extended FastSLAM Using Cellular Multipath Component Delays and Angular Information

Abstract

Opportunistic navigation using cellular signals is appealing for scenarios where other navigation technologies face challenges. In this paper, long-term evolution (LTE) downlink signals from two neighboring commercial base stations (BS) are received by a massive antenna array mounted on a passenger vehicle. Multipath component (MPC) delays and angle-of-arrival (AOA) extracted from the received signals are used to jointly estimate the positions of the vehicle, transmitters, and virtual transmitters (VT) with an extended fast simultaneous localization and mapping (FastSLAM) algorithm. The results show that the algorithm can accurately estimate the positions of the vehicle and the transmitters (and virtual transmitters). The vehicle’s horizontal position error of SLAM fused with proprioception is less than 6 meters after a traversed distance of 530 meters, whereas un-aided proprioception results in a horizontal error of 15 meters.

4. High-Resolution Channel Sounding and Parameter Estimation in Multi-Site Cellular Networks

Abstract

Understanding of electromagnetic propagation properties in real environments is necessary for efficient design and deployment of cellular systems. In this paper, we show a method to estimate high-resolution channel parameters with a massive antenna array in real network deployments. An antenna array mounted on a vehicle is used to receive downlink long-term evolution (LTE) reference signals from neighboring base stations (BS) with mutual interference. Delay and angular information of multipath components is estimated with a novel inter-cell interference cancellation algorithm and an extension of the RIMAX algorithm. The estimated high-resolution channel parameters are consistent with the movement pattern of the vehicle and the geometry of the environment and allow for refined channel modeling and precise cellular positioning.

5. SLAM Using Cellular Multipath Component Delays and Angular Information with JPDA Approximation

Abstract

Advanced cellular communication systems provide increased potential for opportunistic high-accuracy positioning. In this paper, long-term evolution (LTE) downlink signals from two commercial base stations (BS) are received by a massive antenna array mounted on a passenger vehicle. Multipath component (MPC) parameters, like delays and angle-of-arrival (AOA) are extracted from the received signals on a snapshot-by-snapshot basis, and then associated across snapshots with a low complexity joint probability data association approximation algorithm. The associated parameters are used to jointly estimate the positions of the vehicle, the transmitters, and the virtual transmitters (VT) with a simultaneous localization and mapping (SLAM) algorithm. Both reflector and scatterer models are adopted, and clock and angular offsets are taken into account in the algorithm. The measurement results show the effectiveness of the data association algorithm and the accuracy of the SLAM algorithm. The vehicle’s horizontal position error of SLAM fused with proprioception is less than 5.5 meters after a traversed distance of 530 meters, compared to that of the un-aided proprioception which is 15 meters.

6. Flexible Density-based Multipath Component Clustering Utilizing Ground Truth Pose

Abstract

Accurate statistical characterization of electromagnetic propagation is necessary for the design and deployment of radio systems. State-of-the-art channel models such as the Enhanced COST 2100 Channel Model utilize the concept of clusters of multipath components, and characterize channels by their inter- and intra-cluster statistics. Automatic clustering algorithms have been proposed in literature, but the subjective nature of the problem precludes any from being deemed objectively correct. In this paper, a new algorithm is proposed, based on density-reachability and ground truth receiver pose, with the explicit focus of extracting clusters for the purpose of channel characterization. Measurements of downlink signals from a commercial LTE base station by a passenger vehicle driving in an urban environment with a massive antenna array on the roof are used to evaluate the repeatability and intuitiveness of the proposed clustering algorithm.

Abstract

Previous genome-wide association studies (GWASs) of stroke — the second leading cause of death worldwide — were conducted predominantly in populations of European ancestry1,2. Here, in cross-ancestry GWAS meta-analyses of 110,182 patients who have had a stroke (five ancestries, 33% non-European) and 1,503,898 control individuals, we identify association signals for stroke and its subtypes at 89 (61 new) independent loci: 60 in primary inverse-variance-weighted analyses and 29 in secondary meta-regression and multitrait analyses. On the basis of internal cross-ancestry validation and an independent follow-up in 89,084 additional cases of stroke (30% non-European) and 1,013,843 control individuals, 87% of the primary stroke risk loci and 60% of the secondary stroke risk loci were replicated (P < 0.05). Effect sizes were highly correlated across ancestries. Cross-ancestry fine-mapping, in silico mutagenesis analysis3, and transcriptome-wide and proteome-wide association analyses revealed putative causal genes (such as SH3PXD2A and FURIN) and variants (such as at GRK5 and NOS3). Using a three-pronged approach4, we provide genetic evidence for putative drug effects, highlighting F11, KLKB1, PROC, GP1BA, LAMC2 and VCAM1 as possible targets, with drugs already under investigation for stroke for F11 and PROC. A polygenic score integrating cross-ancestry and ancestry-specific stroke GWASs with vascular-risk factor GWASs (integrative polygenic scores) strongly predicted ischaemic stroke in populations of European, East Asian and African ancestry5. Stroke genetic risk scores were predictive of ischaemic stroke independent of clinical risk factors in 52,600 clinical-trial participants with cardiometabolic disease. Our results provide insights to inform biology, reveal potential drug targets and derive genetic risk prediction tools across ancestries.

8. LTE NLOS Navigation and Channel Characterization

Abstract

Navigation with terrestrial wireless infrastructure is appealing to overcome geometrical limitations of satellite navigation for users in environments with limited sky views. However, terrestrial signals are also prone to multipath that can result in angular and range estimates that are not representative of actual transmitter-receiver geometry. In this paper, some of these propagation effects are quantified for a particular urban non line-of-sight (NLOS) scenario, based on measurements of downlink reference symbols transmitted by a commercial Long Term Evolution (LTE) base station (eNodeB) and received by a massive antenna array mounted on a passenger vehicle. Empirical results indicate that large-scale statistics for a user making multiple passes through the same urban environment look similar when represented in terms of angles and delays despite changes in orientation and drive direction. Additionally, it is demonstrated that multipath effects can be utilized advantageously; it is possible to estimate not only user position but also orientation through wireless fingerprinting.

9. Urban Navigation with LTE using a Large Antenna Array and Machine Learning

Abstract

Channel fingerprinting entails associating a point in space with measured properties of a received wireless signal. If the propagation environment for that point in space remains reasonably static with time, then a receiver with no knowledge of its own position experiencing a similar channel in the future might reasonably infer proximity to the original surveyed point. In this article, measurements of downlink LTE Common Reference Symbols from one sector of an eNodeB are used to generate channel fingerprints for a passenger vehicle driving through a dense urban environment without line-of-sight to the transmitter. Channel estimates in the global azimuthal-delay domain are used to create a navigation solution with meter-level accuracy around a city block.

10. SLAM using LTE Multipath Component Delays

Abstract

Cellular radio based localization can be an important complement or alternative to other localization technologies, as base stations continuously transmit signals of opportunity with beneficial positioning properties. In this paper, we use the long term evolution (LTE) cell-specific reference signal for this purpose. The multipath component delays are estimated by the ESPRIT algorithm, and the estimated multipath component delays of different snapshots are associated by global nearest neighbor with a Kalman filter. Rao-Blackwellized particle filter based simultaneous localization and mapping (SLAM) is then applied to estimate the position of user equipment and that of the base station and virtual transmitters. In a measurement campaign, data from one base station was logged, and the analysis based on the data shows that, at the end of the measurement, the SLAM performance is 11 meters better than that with only inertial measurement unit (IMU).

Abstract

Background: Randomised control trials and genetic analyses have demonstrated that vitamin D or 25-hydroxyvitamin D (25[OH]D) levels may not play a causal role in the development of cardiovascular disease. However, it is unclear if 25(OH)D is causally associated with cause-specific vascular disease and lipids. Therefore, we examined the causal association of 25(OH)D with myocardial infarction, stroke, ischaemic heart disease, ischaemic stroke, subarachnoid haemorrhage, intracerebral haemorrhage, and lipid levels among both Chinese and Europeans. Methods: We used a Mendelian randomisation (MR) design in the China Kadoorie Biobank, the Copenhagen City Heart Study, and the Copenhagen General Population Study. The 25(OH)D-related genetic variants in the CYP2R1 and DCHR7 genes were genotyped in 99,012 Chinese adults and 106,911 Danish adults. Results: In Chinese adults, plasma 25(OH)D levels were not significantly associated with cause-specific vascular disease or mortality, with the exception of intracerebral haemorrhage (HR, 1.09 [95% CI, 1.01,1.18] per 25 nmol/L higher plasma 25(OH)D). In Europeans, plasma 25(OH)D levels were inversely associated with all types of vascular diseases and mortality. However, MR analysis did not demonstrate causal associations of genetically increased 25(OH)D levels with cause-specific vascular diseases, or mortality in both Chinese and European adults. In addition, each 25 nmol/L higher 25(OH)D was observationally associated with lower total cholesterol and low-density lipoprotein cholesterol levels, but higher high-density lipoprotein cholesterol levels. Likewise, MR analysis showed that 25(OH)D levels were not causally associated with lipids in both Chinese and European adults after Bonferroni correction. Abstract

Little is known about nonrespiratory disease risks, especially vascular morbidity and mortality after developing airflow obstruction (AFO) in Chinese adults. Objective: We aimed to investigate the prospective association of prevalent AFO with major vascular morbidity and mortality. Materials and methods: In 2004–2008, a nationwide prospective cohort study recruited 512,891 men and women aged 30–79 years from 10 diverse localities across China, tracking cause-specific mortality and coded episodes of hospitalization for 9 years. Cox regression yielded adjusted HRs for vascular diseases comparing individuals with spirometry-defined prevalent AFO at baseline to those without. Results: Of 489,382 participants with no vascular disease at baseline, 6.8% had AFO, with prevalence rising steeply with age. Individuals with prevalent AFO had significantly increased vascular mortality (n=1,429, adjusted HR 1.29, 95% CI 1.21–1.36). Abstract

The breakout session ‘Nutrition challenges ahead’ was held at the EFSA 2nd Scientific Conference ‘Shaping the Future of Food Safety, Together’ (Milan, Italy, 14–16 October 2015) to address the main problems in the area of nutrition to be faced in the 21st Century, both at a global and individual level. The nutrition challenges ahead are diverse and depend on agricultural, socioeconomic and individual factors. At a global level, food security, food sustainability and decreasing the impact of food production on climate change are of paramount importance. Decreasing the prevalence of obesity and related disorders, which may coexist with selected micronutrient deficiencies, is a major challenge for wealthy countries; for developing countries and rural food systems, fighting protein–energy malnutrition and micronutrient deficiencies is a priority. Diets based on a wide variety of nutrient-rich local plant foods (e.g. fruits, vegetables, whole grain cereals, vegetable oils, nuts) that contain moderate amounts of animal protein (preferably in the form of fish) and are low in saturated and trans-fatty acids, added sugars and sodium, are healthy, nutritious, sustainable and climate friendly. Creating an environment where such diets are also economically advantageous and convenient may be a part of a global solution to these nutritional challenges. Individuals, however, are unique regarding their genetic background, gut microbiota and health status. In addition, nutrition may already play a role in the development (and prevention) of disease very early in life. Thus, additional health benefits could be achieved by tailoring nutritional strategies to particular population subgroups or even individuals on the basis of current and future knowledge about the relationship between nutrients, genes, the microbiome and health. New technologies and food innovation may help in finding novel foods fit for purpose.
