- Abstract
Partial label learning (PLL) is a typical weakly supervised learning framework, where each training instance is associated with a candidate label set, among which only one label is valid. To solve PLL problems, typically methods try to perform disambiguation for candidate sets by either using prior knowledge, such as structure information of training data, or refining model outputs in a self-training manner. Unfortunately, these methods often fail to obtain a favorable performance due to the lack of prior information or unreliable predictions in the early stage of model training. In this paper, we propose a novel framework for partial label learning with meta objective guided disambiguation (MoGD), which aims to recover the ground-truth label from candidate labels set by solving a meta objective on a small validation set. Specifically, to alleviate the negative impact of false positive labels, we re-weight each candidate label based on the meta loss on the validation set. Then, the classifier is trained by minimizing the weighted cross entropy loss. The proposed method can be easily implemented by using various deep networks with the ordinary SGD optimizer. Theoretically, we prove the convergence property of meta objective and derive the estimation error bounds of the proposed method. Extensive experiments on various benchmark datasets and real-world PLL datasets demonstrate that the proposed method can achieve competent performance when compared with the state-of-the-art methods., Comment: 10 pages

Accumulative evidence indicated that Cdc42 and Wnt/β-catenin signaling both play a critical role in the pathogenesis and development of T1DM. Further, bio-molecular mechanisms in adipose-derived mesenchymal stem cells (ADSCs)-derived insulin-producing cells (IPCs) remain largely unknown. Our aim was to investigate the underlying mechanism of Cdc42/Wnt/β-catenin pathway in ADSC-derived IPCs, which may provide new insights into the therapeutic strategy for T1DM patients. Methods: ADSC induction was accomplished with DMSO under high-glucose condition. ML141 (Cdc42 inhibitor) and Wnt-3a (Wnt signaling activator) were administered to ADSCs from day 2 until the induction finished. Morphological changes were determined by an inverted microscope. Dithizone staining was employed to evaluate the induction of ADSC-derived IPCs. qPCR and Western blotting were employed to measure the mRNA and protein expression level of islet cell development-related genes and Wnt signaling-related genes. The proliferation ability of ADSC-derived IPCs was also detected with a cell counting kit (CCK) assay. The expression and secretion of Insulin were detected with immunofluorescence test and enzyme-linked immunosorbent assay (ELISA) respectively. Results: During induction, morphological characters of ADSCs changed into spindle and round shape, and f

- Abstract
This thesis, with theological aesthetics as a theoretical horizon, and the iconoclastic controversy in the Byzantine period as a case study, is an analysis of the problem of Christology involved in the icon. It tries to make contribution in the three following aspects: (1) Study of the iconoclastic controversy itself. It is generally accepted that the controversy was the eruption of the inherent differences within early patristic theology as a public conflict, and a continuance of the Christological controversy into the post-Chalcedonian era. But most scholars share a tendency believe that the icon defenders' basic argument was the reality of the Incarnation (and used it against the iconoclasts), and this was for the most part attributed to John of Damascus. This thesis indicates that the ultimate foundation for the theological triumph of the defenders is the doctrine of the hypostasis of God-man, a basis on which the entire effort to defend the integrity of the humanity of Christ depends. Otherwise, the return to the Antrochene tradition of the icon defenders can hardly avoid being suspected of Nestorian. This, however, is the achievement of Theodore of Studios. (2) The theology of icon as theological aesthetics. The essence of the problem of theological justification for depicting the image of Christ is: How is it possible that a transcendent God descends and manifests Himself in a visible, perceivable manner, besides abstract concepts and language? Is there any legitimate dogmatic basis for human beings to receive revelation in this way and express it in a corresponding manner? This is the typical problem that concerns theological aesthetics. Although some scholars have already explored the problem of icon on the horizon of theological aesthetics, the systematic-theological content has not really been dealt with. The author analyzes how a proper understanding of the Incarnation by Byzantine Orthodoxy establishes an indispensable Christological basis for a theolog, 沙湄., 論文(哲學博士)--香港中文大學, 2005., 論文(哲學博士)--北京大學, 2005., 參考文獻(p. 170-176)., Adviser: Lo Lung Kwong., Source: Dissertation Abstracts International, Volume: 67-07, Section: A, page: 2619., Electronic reproduction. - Abstract
By reconstructing the interaction between the indigenous people and the Chinese state over a long period of time from the Tang dynasty to the Qing, this thesis argues that the anomaly of indigenous contact with the state in the southwest, unlike the Pearl River delta or even Fujian, is the very long duration of contact and the persistent representation of the indigenous as part of the dominant (Han) tradition, despite the Han claim to superiority., In my visits to Gaozhou, Leizhou and Hainan, I was attracted by the interesting phenomenon that Madam Xian (Xian Furen) or the God of Thunder (Lei shen) is worshiped not only as a deity, but also as an ancestor. The deities had been blended in with the ancestor because in the late imperial period, local people had changed the foci of their territorial worship as they became become part of the Chinese polity., This paper draws on a variety of sources---including official documents, the images of the subjection of the natives, the temples, and the performance of ritual and so on---to voice the indigenous point of view. It goes into the history of Hainan, Leizhou and Gaozhou to relate changing religious practices with social changes and the contact between the indigenous and the state. It also relates history to ritual practices as they are currently observed. By bringing together published historical sources, steles and documents found in the field and current observations of ritual practices, this thesis shows that the imperial tradition was made up of many different strands., 賀喜., 論文(哲學博士)--香港中文大學, 2007., 參考文獻(p. 261-276)., Adviser: David Faure., Source: Dissertation Abstracts International, Volume: 69-02, Section: A, page: 0714., Electronic reproduction. Keywords. Work-Family interface, Work interference to Family, Family interference to Work, Work withdrawal intention., There is a rising preference among working women in China to "return home". The present study explored how the four aspects of Work-Family Interface including Work Enhancement to Family, Family Enhancement to Work, Work Interference to Family and Family Interference to Work affected the work withdrawal intention of young parents who were employees and who had at least one child under 6 years old. At the same time, we explored the antecedences to all facets of Work-Family Interface, which included work/family load, work/family support, work/family involvement, gender concepts as well as personality traits. Furthermore, we examined whether there were gender differences in work withdrawal intention, as well as in its pattern of relationship with the Work-Family Interface. Around 420 couples with diverse professional background from two cities of China, Shanghai and Jinan, completed the questionnaire. We also conducted in-depth interviews with five men and eight women from those two cities to understand the dynamics of these considerations. Results showed that women had a higher work withdrawal intention than men. Moreover women might have a stronger work withdrawal intention when they experienced more Family Interference to Work. Men, on the other hand, might have a higher intention to "return home" only when they confronted more Work Interference to Family. Additionally, we found that women scoring high on family load or traditional gender concepts reported higher Family Interference to Work, while men scoring high on work load or low on the personality scale of Family Orientation reported higher Work Interference to Family. Noting the limitations of the present study, we suggest further research on the relationship between work withdrawal intention and work withdrawal behavior for men and women across different age groups and across different cultures., 陳雪飛., 論文(哲學博士)--香港中文大學, 2007., 參考文獻(p. 153-176)., Adviser: Fanny M. In Chapter 2, the ways how Abe interprets the Buddhist idea of sunyata for his western audience are explored. There are three characteristics in his interpretation, namely clarifying the meaning of sunyata in comparison with the western philosophical and religious concepts, emphasizing the subjective aspect of sunyata, and taking sunyata as a dynamic activity rather than a static state. Among these characteristics, the dynamic interpretation of sunyata is of the most importance. Abe's interpretation goes beyond the classical meaning of sunyata formulated by Nagarjuna, and distinguishes itself from the traditional Chinese Buddhist thought. This dynamic interpretation of sunyata is arguably an original interpretation made by Abe and might have been inspired by the western thought he dialogued with., In Chapter 3, this thesis scrutinizes closely Abe's proposal of "kenotic God" and summarizes the Christian responses attracted. According to Abe, the kenosis of Christ involves the kenotic understanding of God, which means the original nature of God is self-emptying. Abe was not satisfied with the traditional Christian doctrine of Trinity, and proposed "Great zero" or "Absolute nothingness" as the ground of the divine Trinity. Except very few Christian theologians who totally agree or disagree to Abe's idea, most of them accept his idea of "kenotic God", but refuse to take "Absolute nothingness" instead of Trinity as the ultimate divine reality. It can be said that Abe's proposal of "kenotic God" aims at offering a Buddhist interpretation, which is based on the experience of sunyata, as an aid to help Christians to deepen their understanding of God. Although his idea is not completely accepted by most of the Christian theologians, it exercises some sort of transformative influence. Many Christian theologians admitted that their understandings of God had been significantly changed by Abe., In chapter 4, the present study examines if the ideal of "mutual transformation" is fulfilled in Abe's endeavour in Buddhist-Christian dialogue. As demonstrated in Chapter 3, Abe's proposal of "kenotic God" aims at deepening the Christian understanding of the divine ultimate reality from a Buddhist perspective. And it does have some transformative effects among some Christian theologians, in this regard, one side of the "mutual transformation" is realized. The remaining side to be explored is if Abe's understanding of Buddhism has also been transformed by the Christian insight. On the social-historical level, Abe points out that Buddhism should learn from Christianity, especially its view of justice. Abe also attempted to develop the Buddhist social ethics and a Buddhist view of history through encountering Christian theologians. However, on the ultimate level, as Cobb criticizes, Abe shows a strong self-confidence in the Buddhist understanding of ultimate reality and an equally strong resistance to change. Nevertheless, through a comparative study of his interpretation of sunyata and process thought, it is found that Abe's understanding of ultimate reality, namely "Dynamic sunyata", might have probably been inspired by the dynamic structure of process thought together with its idea about the bipolar nature of God. It therefore can be concluded that Abe's understanding of Buddhism has also been transformed in a fundamental way by Christian thought. (Abstract shortened by UMI.), Masao Abe was probably the most prominent and active Buddhist scholar in Buddhist-Christian Dialogue in the last few decades., This thesis consists of five major parts: In Chapter 1, Abe's theory about interfaith dialogue, which includes the necessity of dialogue, the methodological issues, its final goal, and how to understand the plurality and unity of world religions, will be discussed. According to Abe, nowadays the validity of religion in general is seriously challenged by anti-religious ideologies, especially scientism and nihilism. To cope with this challenge, interfaith dialogue must go beyond mutual understanding, and engage in mutually creative transformation. For him interfaith dialogue should involve two steps: first, clarify one's own religious idea, and make ideas from different traditions encounter with each other; second, liberate oneself from one's traditional framework of doctrine and practice and learn from each other in order to realize mutually creative transformation. Only in a transformative dialogue, can religions demonstrate their deepest authentic spirituality and overcome the anti-religious ideologies. In respect of religious pluralism, Abe proposed to take the Buddhist three-body doctrine as a working hypothesis to establish the dynamic unity of world religions. Through comparing Abe's proposal with that of John Hick and John B. Cobb, Jr. respectively, this thesis argues that although Abe's proposal is more capable of explaining the plurality and unity of world regions as well as giving a theoretical support for mutual learning, the proposal also implies a kind of Buddhist superiority, which may prevent Buddhists from learning from other religions at the ultimate or inner most level., 李宜靜., 論文(哲學博士)--香港中文大學, 2007., 參考文獻(p. 195-212)., Adviser: Pan-Chiu Lai., Source: Dissertation Abstracts International, Volume: 69-02, Section: A, page: 0639., Electronic reproduction. - Abstract
Based on these fragments, this dissertation first makes an attempt to clarify the issues involving the Gu Wen Shang Shu that was discovered in the Kong's wall, as reported in various documents of the Han Dynasty. It then proceeds to discuss the characteristics and the origins of the "archaic scripts" in the Shuo-wen Jie-zi and the Stone Classics in Three Scripts of the Wei Dynasty, as these two texts and the script of Gu Wen Shang Shu are closely related., Finally, by examining the discrepancies between the quotations of the Shang Shu in the Shuo-wen Jie-zi and the version of Ma Rong and Zheng Xuan, this dissertation constructs the argument that such discrepancies are perhaps the result of the interpretative replacement of characters which was, after all, a common method of teaching employed by gu wen scholars of the Eastern Han., It further deals with the argument of the "li-shu" transliteration (li gu ding), and through a detailed analysis of the expressions and terms used in the text, it expounds the view that the li-shu transliteration of the Gu Wen Shang Shu was non-existent in the Han Dynasty, let alone a so called li-shu transliterated version., Seeking to challenge this viewpoint, the author of this dissertation has made a close examination of the Gu Wen Shang Shu and has discovered that it was actually written in "li-shu", rather than in archaic script. Through a survey of relevant philological issues, the arguments are presented in this dissertation., The controversy surrounding the opposition between the archaic and vernacular scripts (jin gu wen) of the Han Dynasty is one of the most complex issues in Chinese philology. Scholars have yet to come to a consensus on which script the Gu Wen Shang Shu (The Book of History Written in Archaic Script) was written. For a long time, a popular view has been that the difference between "jin wen" (vernacular script: li-shu) and "gu wen" (archaic script) lies in the types of script used, as the so-called Gu Wen Shang Shu is believed to have been written in archaic script., The issue of script of Gu Wen Shang Shu has been a significant topic in Chinese philology. Moreover, the controversy over the archaic script and the contemporary script of the Han Dynasty is very much about the Shang Shu. An understanding of this issue is crucial in resolving problems confronting other archaic texts., Though the original text of the Gu Wen Shang Shu is no longer extant, there are a few surviving fragments in the quotations of the Shang Shu in the Shuo-wen Jie-zi, the "archaic scripts" in the Stone Classics in Three Scripts (San-ti Shi-jing), the "li-shu" transliteration (li gu ding) of the Shang Shu and the quotations of the Gu Wen Shang Shu of Ma Bong and Zheng Xuan in the Jin-dian Shi-wen., 蘇春暉., 論文(哲學博士)--香港中文大學, 2007., 參考文獻(p. i-xvi)., Adviser: Chan Hung Kan., Source: Dissertation Abstracts International, Volume: 69-01, Section: A, page: 0198., Electronic reproduction. This phenomenon might show that every teacher has some underlying beliefs, which could be made clear by narration. Lack of "traditional" art making experience, Helen thought the "Visual Learning" in art education could help students "unwrap packaging" and get to understand the hidden truth. On the other hand, other three teachers who love drawing from their very young age, focused more on different media of art making. To some extent, reflecting an "art for art sake" attitude, which shows quite a distance from the orientation of recent curriculum changes., This study is an exploratory narrative research, focusing on the beliefs and their formation process of those teachers who regard themselves as art teachers. Hong Kong society seems ignore the importance of art education. Most teachers teach in primary school can have a share on having a few Art & Craft lessons, including those who even don't understand what is art. In this context, there are still some teachers who regard themselves as art teachers. Why? What beliefs do they hold towards art or art education? How are these belief constructed? Are these teachers conscious of their own beliefs? Are these beliefs related to their teaching experience and seniority?, Through "synthesis text" interview, teachers are provided with the opportunity to reflect their beliefs and discover the unaware "existential presumptions". It was a good chance for them to clarify their blurred perspectives, even to make change of them., Through four interviewees' sharing of their "life stories" towards art or art education as well as "how" and "why" they transmitted such teaching activities, the researcher found that regardless their teaching seniority, they all showed that art teachers should possess drawing ability. Interactive interviews and self-evaluation of their own "synthesis text" were delivered. The researcher found that during their late phase of teaching life, Wangyi and Zhongliang were aware that they haven't thought seriously about the relationship between art and art education. Hyde, during her early phase of teaching life, thinks that the one who love drawing can be an art teacher. Helen, in her middle phase of teaching life, did not seem to be very clear of what she believed towards art education. Only through several interviews could let her rethink and reconstruct some clues of belief., 第1冊. 一項敘述性研究 A narrative study -- 第2冊. 四個「全貌的」故事 Four life stories., Di 1 ce. - Abstract
The research found that MRPO is helpful for environmental protection and poverty alleviation in rural areas. The poor get pay through working for the project of MROP, but it is too little to help them move out of poverty. However, owning some forestry land may give them sustainable income and help them move out of poverty. The project can raise the public environmental consciousness, and improve the natural environment observably, but do not work well in pollution reduction., The study identified different types of public participation and asset ownerships which have different impacts on the success of the program. There were two participation modes (market-oriented participation and official-led participation) and two types of asset ownership (household ownership and the common ownership). We found that market-oriented participation and household ownership was more effective for poverty elimination and environmental protection than official-led participation and the common ownership. This study suggests that for improving the performance of the program, NGOs should use market-oriented participation when implementing the program, and distribute the asset ownership of the project's outcomes to the poor family when the program is finished. Finally, this study puts forward some specific recommendations in relation to social welfare policies, social work practice, and project implementation to promote the development of NGOs in environmental protection and poverty alleviation in China., This paper is a case study on an environmental and poverty alleviation program, namely Mother River Protection Operation (MRPO), launched by China Youth Development Foundation (CYDF) in 1999. CYDF hopes to address environmental concerns and alleviate poverty through the implementation of this program in poor rural regions of China. The study, based on a survey of 833 persons in four projects of MROP and interviews with 25 farmers and project staffs, evaluated the performance of the program, and analyzed the factors influencing the program outcomes. The four projects respectively lie in four provinces of China, which are Hebei province, Mongolia province, Sichuan province and Guangdong province., 劉洲鴻., 顯微膠片卷端, 作者名誤作"ZHOUHONG, Liu", 論文(哲學博士)--香港中文大學, 2007., 參考文獻(p. 438-461)., Xian wei jiao pian juan duan, zuo zhe ming wu zuo "ZHOUHONG, Liu", Adviser: Kwong-Leung Tang., Source: Dissertation Abstracts International, Volume: 68-11, Section: A, page: 4867., Electronic reproduction. - Abstract
The major findings of this study include: (1) poverty resulting from being laid-off is the direct reason for help-seeking and help-receiving to take place, and the lived experience of the research participants is the result of their interpretation of the causes of their poverty; (2) the actions of help-seeking and help-receiving are due to the fact that basic needs not being fulfilled and have demonstrated a task-centered characteristic; (3) help-seeking and help-receiving have different meanings, and cultural value is the root of this difference; (4) the research participants' willingness or readiness and their actual practice in seeking and receiving help show a ranking structure. Amongst formal and informal social support systems, the State ranks the first preference while the family and informal social networks are considered to be their second choice. However, in reality they have to resort to depend on informal social networks, they would seek and receive help in an order determined by the relatedness in blood relation and psychological distance; (5) in the transition period of inadequate social security system in China, social solidarity is based on the family which has been the major source of help; (6) the major support of the participants is from family members, relatives, former colleagues, friends who could only provide limited help due to their own limitations in resources and power; (7) participants' idea of the responsibility of the State under the market economy system is the result of their subjective interpretation of their relationship with their family, society and the State under the situation of restricted resources of the family and informal social network; (8) the social and psychological costs arising from help-seeking and help-receiving are found to have derived from their concept of honour and dignity based on traditional Chinese cultural values., The significance of this study are: (1) it is a break-through from the traditional positivist objective analysis framework and has presented the subjective experience of help-seeking and help-receiving of the impoverished laid-off female workers in China; (2) it has summarized and conceptualized the research participants' help-seeking and help-receiving action as "an experience of Confucianism-Socialism-Communalism ethical practice", and thus provides an analytical framework for the study of help-seeking and help-receiving behaviour in the Chinese context so as to develop indigenous social work theory of helping; (3) it has put forward suggestions to eradicate social exclusion of the impoverished laid-off female workers and improve their social participation in regard to social policy and social welfare services., Using narrative analysis of the qualitative approach, this study explores and describes the subjective interpretation of the help-seeking and help-receiving experience of 15 impoverished laid-off female workers in urban China. This study reveals how these impoverished women make meanings for their lived experience in the context of drastic social and economic changes in China., 馬鳳芝., 呈交日期: 2006年5月., 論文(哲學博士)--香港中文大學, 2006., 參考文獻(p. 368-403)., Cheng jiao ri qi: 2006 nian 5 yue., Adviser: Lam Mong Chow., Source: Dissertation Abstracts International, Volume: 67-11, Section: A, page: 4337., Electronic reproduction. - Abstract
Based on the definition and assessment methods proposed in Chapter 2, an analysis of accuracy at the phonetic, spelling, lexical, syntactic, semantic, and textual levels is given, together with an examination of the impact of extra-linguistic factors, such as the time and place of translation, initiator's policy, and translators. The last section defines the texts for the present study., Chapter 1 is a review of the literature on translation quality assessment in China and in the West., Chapter 2 reviews the study of accuracy in scientific and technical translation, including an introduction to accuracy, research on accuracy, and definition of accuracy, which involves completeness in information transfer, consistency in terminology, grammaticality in the encoding of the target text, and methods of assessing linguistic accuracy., Chapter 3 proposes a new theoretical framework and presents texts for the study of accuracy. Apart from complete transfer of information, consistency in terminology, and grammaticality in the encoding of the target text, accuracy should also be assessed by the function of the target text and the impact of extra-linguistic factors., Chapter 4 is a contrastive analysis of the source and target texts on the basis of the above theoretical framework. This analysis includes features of the source and target texts, methods in translating terms in traditional Chinese medicine, methods in assessing semantic accuracy, types of Chinese medicine formulas and their methods of translation, types of errors in the target texts, and the impact of extra-linguistic factors on translation., Chapter 5 discusses methods of assessing accuracy with the use of computer-aided tools, illustrating them with examples and offering explanations on the terms and statistics. The software used are Wordsmith 3.0 (Scott, 1998) and MonoConc Pro 2.0 (Barlow, 2000)., Chapter 6 examines computer-aided assessment of the translation of The Pharmacopoeia with a more comprehensive error analysis of the target texts. It is shown that compared with human analysis, computer analysis has a higher speed in search, a broader range of texts, a faster production of wordlists, and a faster and better calculation of errors. This is a more comprehensive assessment of translation accuracy. It concludes with an analysis of the possible impact of the extra-linguistic factors on linguistic encoding., Chapter 7 proposes methods to improve accuracy through the construction of the bilingual term bank, and offers suggestions to improve the translation by the construction of a translation memory with the computer-aided tools provided by Trados. A comparison of the new translations with the old ones shows marked improvements in the former., Chapter 8 concludes with the major findings in this thesis. Firstly, computer-aided assessment of accuracy in scientific and technical translation is faster and broader than human assessment. Secondly, methods for assessing accuracy with computer-aided tools are important in filling up gaps in human assessment. Lastly, computer-aided accuracy assessment has a great impact on other relevant areas., In scientific and technical translation, accuracy is most important. However, the operative aspect of accuracy assessment still eludes us. This is a thorny issue in translation studies and practice., The purpose of the present study is to use computer tools, such as Wordsmith 3.0 (Scott, 1998) and MonoConc Pro 2.0 (Barlow, 2000), to help to assess accuracy in the English translation of Chinese pharmacological writings, a specific area of scientific and technical translation. The texts used for this study have been selected from the bilingual versions of The Pharmacopoeia of the People's Republic of China (Beijing: Chemical Industry Press, 2000; The Pharmacopoeia hereafter)., The theoretical framework adopted in this thesis is the translation quality assessment model proposed by Reiss (1971/2000) and Vermeer (1996). The emphasis is on the definition and assessment of "accuracy" so as to provide an operative method to assess accuracy in translation, which is supplemented by a computer-aided approach to accuracy. This is done in the following ways: (1) The creation of a bilingual term bank of 1,500 entries and a translation corpus based on the source texts, target texts and 8 Chinese-English dictionaries of medicine. (2) The categorization of the formula names and linguistic items in the source texts and the definition of accuracy and its assessment methods based on research findings in scientific and technical translation. (3) The quantitative and qualitative analysis of translation errors based on the above definition and methods. (4) The comparison of new translations, produced with the aid of computer tools, with the old ones to demonstrate the validity and applicability of the new approach to accuracy assessment., This thesis is divided into 8 chapters., 錢多秀., 呈交日期: 2005年12月., 論文(哲學博士)--香港中文大學, 2006., 參考文獻(p. 198-211)., Cheng jiao ri qi: 2005 nian 12 yue., Adviser: Sin-Wai Chan., Source: Dissertation Abstracts International, Volume: 67-11, Section: A, page: 4165., Electronic reproduction. - Abstract
Among the officers sent to Tibet by the government of Republican China, fifteen were investigated in detail in this dissertation based on their significant influences on Han-Tibetan relations. I refer to them as the "special envoys on mission to Tibet". After examining the background of the envoys' mission, their activities in Tibet, their perception about Tibet and the Tibetans, and their roles in Tibetan affairs, the author argues that there was a substantial discrepancy between the information obtained by these envoys "on the spot" for their central government and the reality that was happening in Tibet. It was the strong Han nationalist historical context in which the envoys and their government perceived and dealt with Tibetan issues that resulted in a more complicated and delicate development of Han-Tibetan relationships. The historically formed inequality between the Han Chinese and non-Han minorities who scattered around the frontiers still has impacts upon contemporary China's ethic agendas., This dissertation explores the problematic yet relatively unstudied topic of the relationship between Chinese government and Tibet during the Republican period, 1912-1949. Drawing on the abundant English and recently declassified Chinese archival materials, as well as plentiful travel records of some individuals who traveled to the Tibetan areas during that time, this dissertation firstly presents a historical narrative of officers whom the government of the Republican China sent to Tibet, and thus attempting to reconstruct an objective picture of the Republican China's relations with Tibet., 朱麗双., 呈交日期: 2006年10月., 論文(哲學博士)--香港中文大學, 2007., 參考文獻(p. 350-366)及索引., Cheng jiao ri qi: 2006 nian 10 yue., Source: Dissertation Abstracts International, Volume: 68-09, Section: A, page: 3907., Electronic reproduction. Apart from the introduction in the first chapter and the conclusion in the last chapter, this thesis consists of two parts. The first part comprises of Chapters Two and Three which deal with the history of the LiangYou Printing & Publishing Company and its pictorial magazine The Young Companion, putting mainly the progress of the Company and its magazine in the order of their establishment, development and extinction, and analyzing the Company's publications in order to show a full view of the magazine to the readers. The second part mainly explores the age and milieu as depicted in The Young Companion. This part is primarily a textual study, discussing the magazines views of China and the world through its news reports, special columns and serial features., The Young Companion, after its virgin publication in 1926 in Shanghai, China, rapidly became an influential and authoritative large-scale pictorial in the 1930s and 1940s on account of its correctness in widening knowledge, enriching common sense and exploring field of vision. The long period of its existence and the numerous issues published earned its uniqueness in China. As a large-scale pictorial magazine, The Young Companion created a new idea for magazine publication. The research done on the magazine will help us understand how a new cultural trend is formed in society., This thesis focuses on the uniqueness of the coming and going of The Young Companion as a cultural pipeline facing the public in Shanghai which is a place of cosmopolitan population and a meeting point of China and the West; it also focuses on how the magazine regulated its position in the socio-cultural context of China as a new medium and cultural product., 王若梅., 論文(哲學博士)--香港中文大學, 2007., 參考文獻(p. 274-287)., Adviser: Yuen Sang Leung., Source: Dissertation Abstracts International, Volume: 69-01, Section: A, page: 0339., Electronic reproduction. - Abstract
For data collection, the researcher was attached to three Hong Kong secondary schools with average academic and extra-curricular activity performances for three months each during the past two years. Having got familiarized with the teachers and students through joining various formal and informal school activities, in the last month of his attachment, the researcher invited each teacher to be interviewed on the topic of extra-curricular activities and to be tape-recorded. In the end, 122 teachers agreed to be the participants in the interviews. The interview was conducted in a semi-structured way, in which the teacher first recounted and commented on his/her experience and impression of extra-curricular activities. The researcher then asked for clarifications and further exploration of his/her own conception, with the help of some "situation cards". In the whole interview process, the researcher adopted a "non judgmental" attitude towards the definition of "extra-curricular activities", only asking the interviewee questions on the clarity and consistency of his/her conception. Each interview lasted for about an hour. After the interviews, the recordings were converted into written scripts. Based on the interview process and scripts, the researcher sorted out various main themes and key words and proceeded with data analysis. After three stages of back-and-forth collation and with the number of cases reduced to forty, finally seven conceptions of extra-curricular activities have been constructed: Accountability, Attachment, Mould, Experience, Personal growth, Liberation, and Balance. The researcher has depicted the specific horizon, concepts and the relationship among concepts, and also compared and contrasted the distinctive features of each conception., There are multifarious extra-curricular activities in Hong Kong secondary schools. Nearly every teacher participates in the activities. Different teachers infuse extra-curricular activities with diverse meanings, and actualize different modes of school education. This study aims at exploring Hong Kong secondary school teachers' conceptions of extra-curricular activities. It collates individual cases into different collective clusters, depicting each conception of extra-curricular activities, and the relationship between the concepts., This thesis attempts to relate and contrast the features of the seven conceptions of extra-curricular activities and the four main questions generated from the theories about valuation in curriculum, thus showing that the conceptions of Accountability, Attachment and Mould are based on "group" values, which set an instrumental field for "learning". Conceptions of Personal growth, Experience and Liberation refer to "individual", tending to adopt "individual as a unit" and "intrinsic values" as the learning field. The conception Balance is in-between the two. It tries to balance the tension between individual and social instruments, as well as intrinsic and extrinsic values. Taking a step further, this thesis also argues that to improve the quality of school education, each teacher has to decide on a definition and orientation of the curriculum which is in line with his/her own extra-curricular activity conception. Merely claiming that "Extra-curricular activity is part of the curriculum" is not necessarily conducive to improving education quality. Finally, the findings also point to the need to explore how we can provide teachers with a cultivating environment and quality facilitators for helping them clarify, improve and transform their conceptions of extra-curricular activities in the course of learning. This will be a key concern for the further development of teacher education., 周昭和., 呈交日期: 2006年4月., 論文(哲學博士)--香港中文大學, 2006., 參考文獻(p. 324-344)., Cheng jiao ri qi: 2006 nian 4 yue., Adviser: Ngai-ying Wong., Source: Dissertation Abstracts International, Volume: 67-11, Section: A, page: 4078., Electronic reproduction. - Abstract
Finally, this thesis put forward specific recommendations in relation to social welfare policies, social work practice, organizational capacity building, organizational performance assessment and the future areas for research on philanthropic foundations., The purpose of this research is to describe and discuss the magnitude of success, use of strategies and extent of public participation in philanthropic foundations under the socialist system of China. It also analyzes how the effectiveness of these philanthropic foundations is related to their selected strategies and their extent of public participation., The research also found that public participation was an essential value in the philanthropic foundations. Public participation was a tactic to obtain resources, and to realize success in the organization. However, empowerment of the service users had not been given enough attention. Meanwhile, the participants in the philanthropic foundations could be classified as individuals and legal entities, administrative units, public organizations and quasi-governmental organizations. The mode of participation varied from the "one-way model", the "participatory model" and the "decision-making model". Accordingly, four models of participation were identified., The research found that the successful philanthropic foundations had differing manifestations and weights in variables pertaining to "objectives", "degree of satisfaction", "legitimacy" and "resource input". Whilst the variables were related to each others, the weight for each variable differed in the studied cases. Classified in terms of the weight of the variables, there were four models among the successful philanthropic foundations, namely, the "equilibrium model", the "satisfying model", the "legitimate model" and the "sustainable model"., The research further found that there was correlations among the manifestation of success, strategic orientation, and mode of participation. The case background is related to certain manifestation of success, strategy and mode of public participation, constructing four reaction patterns. These reaction patterns are premised on "organization", "resources", "need", and "government", producing different relationships among "success", "strategy" and "public participation"., The study identified the functional dimension (philanthropic versus charity) and the instrumental dimension (market versus government action), from which five different strategies were derived from the philanthropic foundations studied. They were the "strong market orientation", the "compromising orientation", the "weak market orientation", the "mutuality orientation" and the "governmental orientation"., This research is a case study of 7 legally registered philanthropic foundations supported by non-governmental funds. Twenty senior management staffs working in the 7 philanthropic foundations participated in the in-depth interviews. The samples were selected from various departments under different administrative levels in Mainland China, including the central government level, the provincial level and the municipal level, and taking into account the economic strength of the regions. All the selected cases included philanthropic services for children, and have been operating for more than 5 years. These homogeneous cases are to a certain extent typical cases., 陳津利., 呈交日期: 2005年6月., 論文(哲學博士)--香港中文大學, 2005., 參考文獻(p. 406-426)., Cheng jiao ri qi: 2005 nian 6 yue., Source: Dissertation Abstracts International, Volume: 67-01, Section: A, page: 0336., Electronic reproduction. - Abstract
Anders Nygren's Agape and Eros is a classical work in the history of Christian ideas of love. It has inspired the academic debate on the relationship between Agape and Eros, while the former is a core concept in Christian theology and ethics, the latter represents the ancient Greek humanistic ethos. Nygren points out that agape and eros encounter and mingle with each other at the theoretical level. However, he suggests that in the Christian idea of love and theology, the erotic ingredient, which invades in and weakens the pure original meaning of agape, should be eliminated. In achieving this, he attempts to deny the role of eros, which manifests the existential characteristics of human being, in the Christian ethical life. Thus Nygren not only makes agape and eros distinctive in their respective meanings, but also separates them in human existential situation., In the history of Christian theology, we can find "Tradition of Separating" which tends to separate agape from eros like Nygren does. Meanwhile, there is "Tradition of Uniting" claiming to unite the two kinds of love and Tillich's idea of love is a typical example. Therefore, an investigation of Tillich's idea of love, especially its elaboration on the agape-eros relationship, is helpful and constructive not merely to a deeper understanding of Tillich's systematic theology, but also a comprehensive and balanced understanding of the two trends mentioned above in the history of Christian theology., In this thesis, we examine Tillich's idea of love within the context of history of ideas and trace its historical roots, so that the tradition of uniting agape-eros in the history of ideas, mainly in that of Christian theology can be demonstrated. On the one hand, we try to retrieve the Courtly Love tradition in Medieval-Renaissance ages and Marcilio Ficino's Neo-Platonist understanding of eros in Renaissance as the historical sources to the particular meaning of Tillich's eros. On the other hand, our discussion makes particular reference to Gregory of Nyssa and John of the Cross, two representatives of the Christian spiritual theologians, whose spiritual writings on love will be considered as the historical roots of Tillich's agape-eros union within the Christian tradition. At last, the present study attempts to show that the modern application of Tillich's uniting agape with eros in Christian theology and ethics, along with related secular philosophy, revitalize this "Tradition of Uniting"., Paul Tillich handles the relationship of agape-eros in his systematic theology in a way radically different from the Nygrenian way. In dealing with the relationship between agape and eros, Tillich proposes a "quadric interactive structure of love" in which the four qualities of love namely libido, eros, philia and agape united and synergized in one love. In this structure, agape uplifts eros (including libido, eros and philia qualities) as divine-human power from the ambiguities of life into the unambiguous transcendent unity of life; while eros substantiates the abstract agape by clothing it in substantial appearance common to human existential feature., 王濤., 呈交日期: 2006年5月., 論文(哲學博士)--香港中文大學, 2006., 參考文獻(p. 282-301)., Cheng jiao ri qi: 2006 nian 5 yue., Adviser: Lai Pan Chiu., Source: Dissertation Abstracts International, Volume: 67-11, Section: A, page: 4225., Electronic reproduction. - Abstract
Many studies show that teacher beliefs strongly influence their instructional decisions, which in turn affect classroom practice and curriculum implementation. Studies also reveal many curriculum reforms in the past failed because teacher beliefs had been neglected in the design and implementation process., The new secondary Chinese language curriculum implemented in 2002 in Hong Kong is of student-centred basis, and thus teachers are required to change their beliefs. This qualitative study aims at investigating teaching beliefs of Chinese language teachers and their influence on curriculum implementation. By examining teaching beliefs of teachers, light can be shed on the problems and prospect of curriculum implementation. Data were collected through semi-structured interviews and observations. Twelve teachers were selected purposefully from three different types of secondary schools, namely band 1, 2 and 3; which represent different range of students' academic competency. In each type of school, two expert teachers and two novice teachers with a variety of educational backgrounds and rankings at school were selected., The results of this study indicate that teaching beliefs of teachers and their teaching behaviours are interrelated. It also highlights that the existing beliefs of transmission-oriented teachers are incongruent with the underlying philosophy of the new curriculum. This may hinder the implementation of the intended curriculum. But most of the beliefs held by the heuristics-oriented teachers are in line with the intended curriculum, which is likely to facilitate its successful implementation. The findings also have important implications for curriculum developers and teacher educators: curriculum implementation must be accompanied by continuous teacher development which fosters changes of beliefs and practices., This study finds out that there are underlying commonalities in beliefs among the twelve teachers. In their opinion, the conception of Chinese language is "wen dao he yi", that means the subject does not only aim at developing students' communication skills but also providing positive values. Nevertheless, teachers' beliefs on teaching could be divided into two main orientations, namely transmission and heuristics. Transmission-oriented teachers believe that they transmit knowledge and act as directors and disciplinarians; while students are recipient of knowledge. Their major concerns of teaching are reading and writing but listening and oral practices are of secondary importance; these four areas of language are unlikely integrated in teaching. On the contrary, the heuristics-oriented teachers favour two-way and interactive teaching approaches. They regularly arrange group activities for students in diversification, and let peers learn from each other. Therefore students can be active learners while teachers are facilitators. In their view, integrating reading, writing, listening and speaking in teaching can facilitate students' learning., 譚彩鳳., 呈交日期: 2005年12月., 論文(哲學博士)--香港中文大學, 2006., 參考文獻(p. 240-261)., Cheng jiao ri qi: 2005 nian 12 yue., Advisers: Lam Chi Chung; Yu Nae Wing., Source: Dissertation Abstracts International, Volume: 67-11, Section: A, page: 4087., Electronic reproduction. - Abstract
Agricultural development has long been the biggest challenge faced by governments or rulers of many countries and regions, be it in the past or at present. It affects the various political, social and economic development aspects of a country or region. Based on various long-term and short-term social needs, the authorities have attempted to find a suitable balance, searching constantly for feasible methods to manage agriculture, in the hope of harmonising the interests of peasant households, consumers and the ruling class through administrative measures. This has resulted in continuous adjustments in agricultural policies and effectively affected the development of agriculture as well as the well-being of farmers and the general public., As an entrepot, Hong Kong had very little arable land. The number of people engaged in farming, either directly or indirectly, was dwarfed by the consumer population. How to provide the large population with sufficient food, enabling it to be a driver behind economic development? This question became an important political issue for the Hong Kong colonial government for more than 100 years. Sino-British relations fluctuated considerably after the Second World War and this made agricultural development a thorny problem for the colonial government. In the course of studying 60 years of agricultural development, the most striking impression is that the Hong Kong colonial government was totally involved in agricultural production in the New Territories through the systematic promotion of the cooperative movement involving production, transport and marketing. This had made contribution to Hong Kong's unique political and social environment., This thesis reconstructs the agricultural history of Hong Kong in the post-war period. It explores the profound influence that the Agricultural Cooperative Movement has on the political ecosystem of the villages in the New Territories, economic efficiency and human relations in rural communities., 陳煜禮., 論文(哲學博士)--香港中文大學, 2007., 參考文獻(p. 226-230)., Source: Dissertation Abstracts International, Volume: 69-02, Section: A, page: 0713., Electronic reproduction. This thesis looks into the development of Songjiang School in the context of mutual interaction and networking among painters. It focuses on two phenomena. Firstly, it studies the interaction between Songjiang School painters and artists from various Jiangnan art centres. Secondly, it explores the artistic genealogy within the Songjiang School. It investigates the activities of individual Songjian School painters in particular, and the rise and decline of the entire Songjiang School in general., Under the famous master literati Dong Qichang, Songjiang School painters broke new path in landscape painting, valuing moist ink tones at the expense of brush and ink. But even before Dong, Gu Zhenyi and Mo Shilong were already well known for their efforts in exploring new styles. Supported by brilliant art talent such as Chen Jiru, Zhao Zuo and Shen Shicong, Dong Qichang brought the Songjiang School to its zenith. However, it was also Dong Qichang who dug the grave for the School. As Dong's followers were mostly professional painters, they could not stand as equals to Literati connoisseurs. Some became Dong Qichang's ghost-painters at the expense of their artistic individuality, whereas others were trapped in the lower end of the art market. Consequently, the Songjiang School lost its vigor and prestige in the Qing dynasty. Only Dong Qichang, the leading master of the School, could dominate the literati painting scene., With its economy revived after the suppression of the wako invasion in late Jiajing period (1522-1566), Songjiang quickly reassumed its dominant position in the art scene. Songjiang School painters became very self-conscious and proud of their own hometown. They succeeded in networking with connoisseurs in Zhejiang and Huizhou, and learning valuable lessons from the works of their Suzhou counterparts. Consequently, although both the Wu (Suzhou) and Songjiang Schools were descendents of the same literati painting tradition, the Songjiang School loomed large throughout the sixteenth and seventeenth centuries. The social prestige of some Songjiang literati certainly enhanced the success of the School., 徐麗莎., 呈交日期: 2005年8月., 論文(哲學博士)--香港中文大學, 2005., 參考文獻(p. i-x (2nd group))., Cheng jiao ri qi: 2005 nian 8 yue., Advisers: Jao Tsung-i; Harold Mok Kar-leung., Source: Dissertation Abstracts International, Volume: 67-07, Section: A, page: 2355., Electronic reproduction. Integrated curriculum reform in China is meant to change the traditional teaching culture. Based on the findings, it is recommended that the education authority should implement the reform in a gradual manner and takes cultural changes into consideration. It is also essential to support the reconstruction of teachers' beliefs and their professional identities., The education system of Mainland China has been dominated by the discipline-based curriculum. One of the major curriculum reform initiatives launched in September, 2001, is curriculum integration. Two new integrated curricula, "Science" and "History and Society" are implemented in junior secondary schools in the experimental zones. The ideology and teaching approach of these new integrated curricula differ from teachers' usual classroom practices. To what extent are the integrated curricula implemented? How have teachers' beliefs changed? What are the factors shaping these changes?, The study reveals that the deep and core belief of teachers is very stable. The factors influencing teachers' belief changes included the personal experience of teachers, the school environment and the societal context. During the reform, teachers were trapped in two contradictory discourses, one treasured humanistic values fostering personal growth, while the other emphasized standard examination and competition. Facing two paradoxical educational value stances, teachers experienced serious conflicts in their educational beliefs, and their professional identities were challenged. The changes of belief reflect the process of adapting and adjusting to their new roles in the education system., This study, from a cultural-personal perspective, aimed to show teachers' beliefs and their changes. In this study, two schools and fourteen teachers were chosen to be studied. Ethnographic research methods, including in-depth interview, field observation and document analysis were adopted to inquire into teachers' collective daily experiences, their beliefs and their changes, and factors shaping the changes in beliefs., 張爽., 呈交日期: 2006年11月., 論文(哲學博士)--香港中文大學, 2007., 參考文獻(p. 369-384)., Cheng jiao ri qi: 2006 nian 11 yue., Adviser: Lam Chi Chung., Source: Dissertation Abstracts International, Volume: 68-08, Section: A, page: 3270., Electronic reproduction. I also argue that the structure and the content of Records of Practical Government was much influenced by Qiu Jun's (1421-1495) Daxue yanyi bu (Supplement to the Extension of the Great Learning), which initiated the tradition of systematic statecraft writing in the Ming. However, because Lu and Qiu lived in different eras and had different social backgrounds and official status, they addressed same issues at different levels in their books. The Daxue yanyi bu was written as a reference for the emperors and officials and as a blueprint for political reform to be initiated by the court. What it deals with are national administrative structures and large social issues. The Records of Practical Government only deals with practical matters from the viewpoint of local officials. Providing guidance to provincial officials at different ranks, it was meant to be a guide to local governance., I further argue that an immediate reason for Lu's desire to improve local governance was the impact of Zhang Juzheng's political reforms. When Lu became an official, he was involved in the decade-long reforms initiated by Zhang. Zhang was Lu's spiritual guide, although while Zhang's reforms involved officials at different levels, Lu's only concerned local and provincial administrative officials., In later times, Lu Kun's statecraft thought spread mainly through publication of his books. His ideas on government were well recognized in the Qing dynasty. He was canonized in the Confucian temple in 1826 and considered an accomplished thinker and scholar of practical learning., Lu Kun was a famous Confucian scholar-official of the late Ming Dynasty. As a magistrate of Xiangyuan and Datong counties of Shanxi province and as a Vice Minister of Justice, he was highly praised by people he governed and by fellow officials of his times because of his uprightness and able administration. This dissertation focuses on the characteristics of Lu Kun's (1536-1618) statecraft thought by analyzing his important work. Records of Practical Government (Shizheng lu), and his understanding of the relationship between the Wanli emperor (reigned 1563-1620) and his officials., The Records of Practical Government, compiled after Lu retired, is a corpus of official documents Lu wrote and announced when he was an official in Shanxi. These documents reflect his administrative experience and the local custom of places he governed. They also reveal Lu's understanding of local affairs, his emphasis on the responsibility of an official and his design for the strengthening of that. Lu, however, was unable to realize much what he proposed in the Records of Practical Government . His regulations were too detailed and complicated, and his language somewhat harsh, that they were difficult to be observed., The research also shows Lu's personal understanding and handling of the relationship between the Wanli emperor and his officials, which likewise reveals Lu's statecraft thought. Lu was prudent enough to be able to maintain good terms with Wanli for a smooth discharge of his official responsibility. But when Lu was forced to resign in disillusion during the contention for the confirmation of an heir-apparent, he turned to support officials who left office as a protest to the emperor., 解揚., 論文(哲學博士)--香港中文大學, 2007., 參考文獻(p. 391-448)., Adviser: Hung-lam Chu., Source: Dissertation Abstracts International, Volume: 69-02, Section: A, page: 0714., Electronic reproduction. - Abstract
Shi Hua is an important genre in the traditional Chinese literary criticism. The Qing dynasty (1644-1911) is the prime period of the composition of Shi Hua, the number of which amounts to a total of more than 1,000 works. Compared with other dynasties, this figure is unsurpassable. The study of Shi Hua usually focuses on one author, one school or one dynasty, and a large-scale research from the vision of area is rare. This dissertation aims to study the works of Shi Hua of the Guangdong Province in the Qing Dynasty. Starting to appear in the Ming dynasty (1368-1644), the works of Shi Hua of Guangdong became abundant in the Qing dynasty. Even after the founding of the Republic of China in 1911, the composition of the works of Shi Hua was still occasionally observed. During the Qing dynasty, about 100 works of Shi Hua were composed by the authors of Guangdong nativity, while only 30-odd works are still extant. The rich content of these works demonstrates the intimate relationships between the Shi Hua of Guangdong and the poetry of the same area as well as the entire Qing dynasty., The study of this dissertation is three-layered. Firstly the historical development of the works of Shi Hua of Guangdong in the Qing dynasty is discussed, and the information about the extant works and their authors is investigated. Secondly the development and evolution of the Guangdong poetry are analyzed on the basis of the content of the works of Shi Hua. Thirdly the theories and the value of several important works of Shi Hua in Guangdong are studied. The dissertation is divided into eight chapters: Chapter 1, the development of the works of Shi Hua of Guangdong in the Qing dynasty: in a chronological order, the development of the works of Shi Hua of Guangdong in the Qing dynasty is discussed in order to outline their literary thoughts. Chapter 2, the works of Shi Hua of Guangdong in the Qing dynasty and their authors: the authors' nativities and the background of composition are scrutinized. Chapter 3, the discussions about the Guangdong poetry in the works of Shi Hua of Guangdong in the Qing dynasty: the regional features of the Guangdong poetry discussed in the Shi Hua and their relations with poetry societies, clans, paintings, political background and the compilation of collectanea are studied, and the poetic thought of 'Tang-following' is emphasized. Chapter 4, the study in the works of Shi Hua of Huang Pei-fang: Huang's attitude towards the Qing poetry is studied, his poem creation theory is examined so as to reveal his poetic thought of 'Tang-following'. - Abstract
Both individual characteristics and organizational internal structure are significantly related to employees' participation in both kind of education and training, namely the firm-provided as well as self-chosen and paid education and training outside the firm. Those employees who are male and younger, those who are at higher end of job hierarchy, those who experienced more internal mobility, are more likely to participate in both kinds of education and training. They take the advantage of both kinds of education and training programs., Cases of this study include 31736 employees from 410 enterprises, randomly sampled at China's county level from different regions in terms of economical development. Multilevel logistic regression was employed to model the impact of region, firm and individual characteristic on employees' participation in adult education and training. Dependent variables are classified in three groups in this study: (a) those employees who participated in the training provided by firm only, (b) those employees who participated in self-chosen and self-paid adult education and training outside firm only, and (c) those employees who participated in both two kinds of adult education and training., In regard to employees' participation in firm provided training only, the labor market structural factors and the firms' internal organizational structure had the most explaining power, between these two firms' internal market characteristics had greater impact. A job position that an employee obtained is his/her niche in the labor market. The characteristics of an internal market is decisive for allocating training opportunities. Those employees at a position in advantage are likely to participate in firm supported training. That is, the higher an employee is at occupational hierarchy, the longer a person has worked in current firm, the greater the extent to which an employee has experienced changes in the workplace, the more likely that employee would take part in firm provided training., In the context of global market and knowledge economy development, adult education and training are regarded as an important factor in keeping economic growth in China. They also become a means for individuals to acquire knowledge, skills and to enhance human capital, thus improving their ability in the job market., In the fast-growing market-oriented economy in China, many employees have been involved in job-related education and training of various kinds. In the transition from the planned to a market economy, firms are more autonomous in the organization of production, and individuals are free to pursue their occupational aspirations. Firms and individual started to take responsibilities to invest in education and training in order to acquire competence. It is interesting to study who participate in adult education and training as an opportunity to update job skills. It is important to understand if that would have implications in improving the workforce quality., The empirical analyses supported the hypothesis that employees' participation in adult education and training is determined by both individual characteristics and multi-level labor market structures. Both employees and their firms are embedded in certain social structure that could be facilitating or constraining in terms of making educational opportunities available to firms and individual employees. The findings clearly show that patterns of the three groups of independent variables having impact on the three types of participation choices vary., These findings show that employees' participation in education and training is related to individual characteristics acquired before entering the labor market, and it is also related to the characteristics of labor market. Making education and training available for employees has become a practice to improve competence, which is vital to maintain sustainability. Therefore, it should give consideration to improving equality of participation for different groups of employees and reducing disparity between regions. A mechanism is necessary to coordinate education and training among sectors, such including education, economic sector and the government administration for the workforce. That would encourage the exchange of information between sectors and improve cooperation in developing programs for the workforce. In such a way, adult education and training can play an important role and meet skill training needs for different social groups., This thesis takes employees' participation in education and training for a study. It is focused on the following research questions: Who had an opportunity to participate in adult education and training during the economic reform in mainland China? What are the factors affecting employees' participation? Based on human capital theory, labor market segmentation theory and organization theory, it is hypothesized that employees' individual characteristics, the firms' internal structural characteristics, and the firms' characteristics in relations to labor market all these multi-level factors have impact on employees' participation in adult education and training. Independent variables are accordingly deduced into three groups. Individual characteristics are those achieved status possessed by employees before entering into the labor market, include age, gender, marital status, initial education level. Characteristics of the firms' internal labor market is represented by the employees' job related characteristics in terms of job position, work experience in years, mobility, and the extent an employee experienced the firms' reform. An employee acquired these work-related attributes after having entered the firm, or being selected by a firm if one's individual characteristics were considered matching in the workplace. Finally, firms' characteristics, reflecting firms' attributes as compared to other firms in the market system, would affect resource allocation and labor requirements. These variables include firm size, the average education year of employee with in firm, the overall mobility of a firm's internal labor market, types of ownership, and the economic industrial sector that the firm belongs to., Whether an employee has participated in self-paid adult education is an interaction of individual characteristics and labor market structure. Those employees who are male, younger, and who had senior secondary education are likely to participate in self-paid adult education. In regard to one's decision of participating in self-paid adult education or not, it mostly related to one's own individual characteristics. As an employee is embedded in the firm and then the firm embedded in the large labor market, his or her action is affected by the labor market structure, too, but those are the secondary factors., 王蕊., 呈交日期: 2006年2月., 論文(哲學博士)--香港中文大學, 2006., 參考文獻(p. 213-232 )., Cheng jiao ri qi: 2006 nian 2 yue., Advisers: Jin Xiao; Nai-Kwai Lo., Source: Dissertation Abstracts International, Volume: 67-11, Section: A, page: 4067., Electronic reproduction. - Abstract
After China adopted the reform and open door policy in early 1980s, thanks to their knowledge on Buddhism, their familiarity of religious rituals, and their experience in temple management, vegetarian women have doubled their efforts not only to transmit their traditions their next generation but also to establish the authentic Buddhist image of temples in Southern Fujian. (Abstract shortened by UMI.), The research is carried out according to the discussions on (1) the gender and power relations within the religious institutions that were re-presented and re-produced by renaming vegetarian women as Brahma-carya upasika, and (2) the influences of being identified as Brahma-carya upasika on the life and religious practice of these vegetarian women. From a bifocal perspective, the study demonstrates that women are victim as well as agent within a religious organization in a patriarchal society. It has been discovered that vegetarian women in Southern Fujian have been suppressed yet they have also made use of the opportunities of changing their identity since the late Qing Dynasty. Study results also show that [vegetarian] women in Southern Fujian have adopted obedient attitudes instead of revolutionary means to establish their space and women culture. This could be considered as their expedient means and power yet indicates their powerlessness under the patriarchal society and religion. In other words, they have employed the least powerful approach to conducting their religious life and maximizing their power for self-development., This thesis, based on historical, textual and field studies, explores a special religious group of vegetarian women (Caigu in Chinese) in Southern Fujian. The research is focused on examining their identify transformation as a religious group to a Buddhist organization along the process of societal change from the end of the Qing up to present time. The key issues discussed in this thesis are as following: (1) the process of institutionalization of the vegetarian women into mainstream Buddhist, (2) the elements that have exercised influences on the religious identity of vegetarian women, (3) temple managements, daily activities and religious rituals, and (4) the relationship between vegetarian women and the mainstream Buddhism in contemporary China., 劉一蓉., 呈交日期: 2005年8月., 論文(哲學博士)--香港中文大學, 2005., 參考文獻(p. i-xvi (4th group))., Cheng jiao ri qi: 2005 nian 8 yue., Adviser: Wai Lun Tam., Source: Dissertation Abstracts International, Volume: 67-07, Section: A, page: 2616., Electronic reproduction. - Abstract
There are five chapters. Chapter 1 reviews the publishing of catalogs, the methods used to identify fake copies, and previous scholarly studies. I will also define the research scope, objective and methodology of the study. Chapters 2 to 4 explain the relationships between official sutra copies and Buddhist ones, religion and scripture calligraphy, and the copyists and their calligraphy. Through analysing the colophons at the end of the manuscripts and the style of the calligraphy, I intend to show the impact of politics, religion and the status of the copyists on the calligraphy. Chapter 5 focuses on the artistic style of the calligraphy of Dunhuang scriptures, explores the concepts of Xiejing Style and Beiliang Style , and highlights the stylistic differences and similarities in different geographical areas., This study demonstrates that Dunhuang scriptures are an important part in the history of Chinese calligraphy. The quality of the calligraphy varies: some may be masterpieces while others common everyday writings., This thesis investigates the calligraphy of Buddhist and Daoist scriptures found in Dunhuang and Xinjiang, spanning from the Jin dynasty to the Song dynasty. The calligraphy of the copied scriptures is analyzed in its specific social and historical context. Based on historical records, contemporary references and the actual objects themselves, this study uses a textual, comparative research method to give an overview of the calligraphy and to describe its course of development in an approach that is as faithful to history as possible., 毛秋瑾., 呈交日期: 2005年12月., 論文(哲學博士)--香港中文大學, 2006., 參考文獻(p. 143-149)., Cheng jiao ri qi: 2005 nian 12 yue., Advisers: Jao Tsung-i; Harold Mok Kar-leung., Source: Dissertation Abstracts International, Volume: 67-11, Section: A, page: 4016., Electronic reproduction. - Abstract
Contemporary labor social security is an important social institution established to combat risks of human life under urbanization. It has close connection with the mass rural-urban migration in the process of industrialization. Since the 1980s reform and open door in China, huge number of peasants has crowded to the cities looking for jobs. This has created the ever largest migration movement in human history and posed grave challenges to the existing labor social security system. On the basis of a comprehensive review of the legal documents and field interviews in the city of Hangzhou, an attempt was made in this study to review the evolution and the practice of rules and regulations relating to the labor social security, analyze the causes of the labor social security rights deprivation, and explore the social inclusion strategies from developmental welfare perspective., The findings suggest that: (1) The migrant workers have now enjoyed the same basic labor social security rights as the urban workers in terms of rules and regulations; (2) The deficiency of the labor protection in practice is mainly the consequences of the distorted social development: the surplus supply of labor market, the transformation of labor social security system, the problem of the rules and regulations and their executions; (3) Developmental welfare strategies in terms of human and social capital investment help the migrant workers improve their position in the labor market and get access to labor social security; and (4) Apart from implementing developmental welfare strategies, the positive discrimination policy should be endorsed in order to achieve the aim of the wellness of social development and change the disadvantaged position of the migrant workers., This study takes social development theory as the core concept, and regards the social exclusion of labor social security as the result of distorted social development, and proposes a policy orientation that combines developmentalism and positive discrimination. The study not only overcomes the limit of developmental welfare theory which pays emphasis on long-term goals and neglects immediate aids, but also promotes the realization of labor social security rights from both its consequences and causes., 方巍., 呈交日期: 2006年12月., 論文(哲學博士)--香港中文大學, 2007., 參考文獻(p. 266-311)., Cheng jiao ri qi: 2006 nian 12 yue., Source: Dissertation Abstracts International, Volume: 68-08, Section: A, page: 3616., Electronic reproduction. - Abstract
All in all, modernization, marketization, and policy fluctuation can explain the development and change of civic associations in 1980s and 1990s. The policy fluctuations plays the key, and has been more significant in the late 1990s. But as to the state-society relations, it also shows that it is not a zero-sum game, but a win-win game in recent years., Civil associations have been a window to state-society relations in China, which catch eyes and minds of students of China since middle-1990. The theoretical perspectives always adopted include civil society and corporatism, which pay more attention to the political aspects of civic associations. Based on case studies, previous research does not explain the variations of civic associations both in time and spaces., In analyzing the first period, various sources of data are collected to verify the prevailing modernization hypothesis and transition hypothesis. Emphasis has put on the impact of political fluctuations in 1980s. Data shows, the higher level the association registered, the more sensible they are when facing the fluctuations. Based a time series comparison, the sensitivity to fluctuation is also a function of the types of associations. Business associations, recreational associations are more sensible than others. Marketization is closely related to the development of business associations and professional association. State played a key role in the development of them. Modernization is a key factor in the development of academic associations and recreational associations. However, in a cross-sectional analysis, modernization also accounts for a part of variations of associational density between different areas, but the correlation is weak. The balance of power between state and society brought by market transition shows no correlation with the difference of associational density in the cross-sectional analysis., In understanding the development of associations in the second period, data comes from a nationwide sampling survey and the Statistical Yearbook of Chinese Civil Affairs. Comparing to the situation in 1980s type by type, it is shown that policy change and political fluctuation are the most important explanations for the development of associations in 1990s. It finds that during the re-registration and houseclean campaign, the total number of associations dropped greatly. But more grassroots association were accepted and the autonomy of civic associations are also strengthened. But a panel analysis of provincial associational density between 1992 and 2003 shows that economic development and marketization are positive to the associational density after controlling the policy fluctuations. But there is no significant relations between the social modernization and associational density. When a interaction between the covariates and the policy change are considered, all except the urbanization are not significant related to the associational density., To fill in both empirical and theoretical gaps, my research intends to analyze the macro political economy of civic associations in China. After reviewing the history and mapping out the landscape of civic associations, I put forward a comprehensive theoretical framework integrating modernization, marketization, and policy fluctuation as independent variables to interpret the development of civic association in Reform China. It has been divided into two periods: 1978∼1991 and 1992∼2004., 何建宇., 論文(哲學博士)--香港中文大學, 2007., 參考文獻(p. 192-203)., Adviser: Shaoguang Wang., Source: Dissertation Abstracts International, Volume: 68-08, Section: A, page: 3583., Electronic reproduction.
