[EN] While the classic separable quotient problem remains open, we survey general results related to this problem and examine the existence of infinite-dimensional separable quotients in some Banach spaces of vector-valued functions, linear operators and vector measures. Most of the presented results are consequences of known facts, some of them relative to the presence of complemented copies of the classic sequence spaces c_0 and lp. Also recent results of Argyros, Dodos, Kanellopoulos [see 1 in the paper] and Sliwa [see 64 in the paper] are provided. This makes our presentation supplementary to a previous survey (1997) due to Mujica.

This paper deals with the ways of categorising landscapes as ‘urban’ and ‘rural’ using a physicalist approach, where these terms have special meaning. The aim of this paper is to elaborate on the question whether such a division is still meaningful with regard to anthropogenic landscapes, not least in spatial planning. The concerns raised in this paper depart from the increasingly complicated structure of geographical space, including that of anthropogenic landscapes. Our standpoint is illustrated using cases of landscape ambiguities from Poland, Germany, Romania and Greece. Leaning on frameworks of physicalist (mechanicistic) theory, this paper suggests an explanation to the outlined semantic conflicts. This is done by pointing to the relationality between the impact of centripetal and centrifugal forces, the specifics of socio-economic development, as well as the varying landscape forms that emerge from the differences within that development.

[Abstract] This paper aims to analyse the concepts of subjectivity and intersubjectivity in scientific writing through the use of stance adverbs perhaps and possibly. These adverbs act as markers of the authors’ presence expressing their views, and a covert relationship between these authors and their corresponding readership. The material used for this study includes four sub-corpora of the Coruña Corpus of English Scientific Writing: CETA (Corpus of English Texts on Astronomy), CEPhiT (Corpus of English Philosophy Texts), CHET (Corpus of English History Texts), and CELiST (Corpus of English Life Sciences Texts). Two of these represent the so-called soft sciences, and the other two the hard sciences, which will allow for comparison. The results might argue against the generally-assumed tendency in the history of scientific writing that this discourse has moved from being author-centred to object-centred. Perhaps it is simply impossible for writers of science to disappear completely from their texts.

However, the aim of this paper is to examinePomeranian face-urns from a perspective emphasizing artefacts assuch, not what artefacts symbolise but rather what artefacts were forthe prehistoric societies. However, my research does not stand in oppositionto the existing approaches. They should rather be complementary.Only by taking into account both a symbolic perspective andthe approach offered in this paper – what I shall call a thingness perspective– can archaeology take a step closer to grasping the complexityof the face-urns phenomenon. The paper begins with a discussionof Martin Heidegger’s thinking about the differences between thingand object. Then I will try to correlate Heidegger’s reasoning withthe Lévy-Bruhlian concept of dualité et bi-présense, using a film, TheMask (1994) directed by Chuck Russell, to illustrate Heidegger’s andLévy-Bruhl’s thinking about things. Then using some thoughts fromarchaeology of the body I will investigate similarities between the humanbody and face-urns. The paper will conclude with an attempt todraw some aspects of the cultural biography of face-urns.

[EN] The main purpose of this paper is the study of a new class of summing mul-tilinear operators acting from the product of Banach lattices with some nontrivial lattice convexity. A mixed Pietsch-Maurey-Rosenthal type factorization theorem for these opera-tors is proved under weaker convexity requirements than the ones that are needed in the Maurey-Rosenthal factorization through products of Lq-spaces. A by-product of our fac-torization is an extension of multilinear operators de¿ned by a q-concavity type property to a product of special Banach function lattices which inherit some lattice-geometric prop-erties of the domain spaces, as order continuity and p-convexity. Factorization through Fremlin¿s tensor products is also analyzed. Applications are presented to study a special class of linear operators between Banach function lattices that can be characterized by a strong version of q-concavity. This class contains q-dominated operators, and so the obtained results provide a new factorization theorem for operators from this class.

Trust is a pervasive phenomenon in our lives. We trust our family members and lovers, our physicians and teachers, our politicians and even strangers on the street. Trust has instrumental value for us, but at the same time it is often accompanied by risk. This is the reason why it is important to distinguish trust that is warranted or justified from blind trust. In order to answer the question how trust is justified, however, it is crucial to know exactly what is the fundamental nature of trust. In the paper, I reconstruct three accounts of trust that operate with the assumption that trust is fundamentally a mental state – the cognitivist account, the voluntaristic account and the affect-based account. I argue that all of these accounts make reference to deeply held intuitions about trust that are incompatible with each other. As a solution to this unfortunate dialectical situation, I suggest to give up the assumption that trust is primarily a mental state. Instead, I argue for a position according to which trust is best understood as a two-place predicate that characterizes a specific relationship in which we can stand to each other.

In this paper, I discuss the use of the English language in movie dialogues where, logically, other languages would have been used by the fictional characters. A shared characteristic of many Hollywood movies (as well as countless other fictional narratives, written or performed) is the notion of linguistic replacement. Even when the depicted story would realistically have taken place in a different linguistic setting, the language(s) are replaced by the base language of narration; in my case, English. Using a taxonomy of semiotic strategies proposed by Petr Mareš as a point of departure, I discuss examples of linguistic replacement from a corpus of twelve recent, commercially successful Hollywood movies with European and American settings. I argue that even though the different strategies (e.g. the use of L2 accents or the presence of the replaced language in filmed writing) fulfill more complex symbolic functions than that of compensatory realism, there has been a recent shift away from linguistic replacement altogether
