The Alpha-dot system is a coding technique that enables people to input data using familiar shapes in a form that is also directly compatible with computers and other binary data processors The technique can be used as the basis for a number of devices and procedures for the two-day communication of information between man and machine. Ten enlisted personnel entered both free form and formatted versions of simulated enemy situation spot reports. Learning time as well as rate and accuracy of data entry using the Alpha-dot keyboard was compared to operator performance using a standard typewriter. The Alpha-dot technique appears to have potential as a means to increase the speed, accuracy and flexibility of input of battlefield data by frontline observers. Functional specifications for a militarized field operable unit will be developed following field tests of a prototype unit.

Legibility comparisons were made among four 5 x 7 dot fonts. The four symbol fonts were shown under nearly optimal viewing conditions to one group of operators and under degraded viewing conditions to a second group of operators. The results showed that no one symbol set was significantly superior in legibility to any of the other sets. It was concluded that new symbols designs are needed to improve the legibility of present 5 x 7 dot symbol sets., See also AD702491.

A system of dynamic armor for tanks (Dash-Dot) is under investigation. A successful system will sense the presence of an anti-tank round, compute it trajectory, and defeat it by automatically firing defending charges that will destroy the attacking rounds before impact. A sensing system of three optical screens, employing filtered IR sources and photo-conductive detectors (PbS cells) has been devised. Preliminary evaluations of the physical and geometrical detection parameters are discussed. In tests of an experimental screen system, an accuracy of about 3% has been achieved in determining the unknown altitude and velocity of 75 mm shells at velocities up to 2500 fps. Preliminary calculations on the complete geometry of the system are presented as an appendix.

An analysis was made of the velocity characteristics of some clear-air dot angels as determined using a simple Doppler radar technique. In addition to inferring the probable nature of the dot angels, an attempt was made to assess the accuracy with which populations of dot angels can serve as wind tracers.

The U.S. Supersonic Transport (SST) program resulted in many significant developments in titanium technology such as metallurgy, brazing, welding, and aircraft structural analysis. A two-phase follow-on program was funded by DOT/FAA to document areas of significant development completed during the SST effort and to expand selected technological areas most applicable to future American aerospace and other industry technology. This report summarizes the work conducted on titanium structure during the two-phase DOT/SST program and provides a concise reference to the more detailed reports available., Report on SST Technology Follow-on Program. The report describes a hollow spherical dipole D-dot sensor (model HSD-4). It consists of two hemispherical conducting shells on opposite sides of a ground plate and produces a current output in response to a time-variant D-field perpendicular to the ground plate. The sensor is a scaled-down version of a larger hollow spherical dipole (model HSD-2), but with less sensitivity and higher frequency response. The theory of operation design, and construction of the sensor, and prototype testing and test results are discussed.

This report describes the design and development of a double gap loop B dot sensor in response to a need for a short rise time sensor for pulse radiation field measurements for antenna scale modeling. A sensor with a single-ended or unbalanced output was needed because this was a requirement of the laboratory instrumentation for monitoring fast rise time pulses (on the order of 0.5 nanosecond).

Aircraft cabin materials fire hazards consisting of flammability, smoke emission, toxic gas emission and flash fire are discussed together with the work ongoing pertinent to these hazards by the FAA and other DOT Administrations and the NASA. (Modified author abstracts)

A new procedure is described for estimating the size distribution parameters from a micrograph of solid particles. The method is more efficient than traditional methods and permits an estimate to be made of the areas of individual profiles by counting the number of dots, in an equispaced lattice array, that fall within the image profiles. Errors in the estimated areas of the individual profiles are distributed in such a manner that they tend to cancel, giving high precision in the estimated values of the mean and standard deviation of the size distribution. The potential usefulness of the dot-counting procedure is demonstrated, using a simulated array of particle profiles. The new method has the additional advantage that it reduces the subjective element in the operator's performance and thus increases interoperator correlation. (Author)

This report describes a concentrated effort to identify and quantify the parameters involved in the design of matrix displays for legibility and to assess the design trade-offs against the criterion of symbol legibility. A literature survey was conducted to determine what information previously existed and its applicability to matrix displays. The literature survey is included as an appendix to this report.
