Construct systems and style preferences of 30 student teachers were investigated before and after student teaching using Gregorc's (1982) "Style Delineator" and Kelly's (1955) "Repgrid". The majority of student teachers were found to prefer styles of Concrete Sequential and Abstract Random. Constructs were elicited from students as they compared and contrasted different teacher role types (e.g., Best Teacher, Most Understanding). The "Planet" computer program (Shaw, 1982) was utilized to determine similar patterns and relationships that existed in the subjects' construct systems. As predicted, students whose style preference was Concrete Sequential had a tendency to rate all the teachers with negative or positive characteristics the same on the repertory grid. An analysis of the constructs revealed categories of: personal traits, teaching qualities, and techniques. Shifts in styles were found to have corresponding changes in underlying cognitive structures. Awareness of style types and cognitive structures appears to need further research and consideration for inclusion in teacher education practices. (Author)

These 41 papers reflect the conference's focus on nonformal adult education. A major goal of the conference was to facilitate dialogue between researchers and practitioners who are concerned with lifelong learning issues. Four papers focus on aging, specifically intergenerational experiences, preretirement leisure counseling, aging of the work force, and memory aids. Community development is emphasized in four papers that address resource utilization networks, community education as a response to unemployment, and attitude scales. Two papers describe correctional education programs. Participant changes in leadership capabilities and a cooperative extension faculty workshop are discussed in papers concerned with extension education. Three presentations on international education focus on adult education in Nigeria and Greece and Farming Systems Research and Development. Four papers on learning theory discuss Eduard Lindeman's critical theory of adult learning, learning contracts, a holistic view of the adult learner, and Ira Progoff's "Intensive Journal." Four papers on literacy address reading instruction, educational credentials, adult high school non-completers, and locus of control and course completion. Two papers address policy in terms of policy evaluation and issues in legislating adult basic education. Concerns of 10 papers dealing with postsecondary and higher education include cost effectiveness of continuing education, participation patterns in credit and non-credit courses, adult university students' expectations of instructor behaviors, self-concept theory, environmental cognitions, university outreach, and continuing professional education. Two papers discuss educational technology--educational television and interactive video instruction. Single papers are offered on three topics: adult development, adult education history, and educational philosophy. The First International Conference on School and Popular Meteorological Education was designed to: (1) examine the need for the general public to be educated in science and mathematics in order to live in today's high technological society; (2) note special attributes that meteorology possesses as a vehicle to teach science and mathematics to all levels, especially to very young children; and (3) discuss methods and programs already underway that can increase scientific and mathematical literacy. These proceedings consist of papers presented at the conference. Among the subject areas addressed in these papers are: the case for scientific and meteorological literacy; activities of the World Meteorological Organization, the Royal Meteorological Society (including its Australian Branch), and the American Meteorological Society; case studies of teaching meteorology, ranging from primary schools to college; use of media (including radio, television, observational data, and photographs), microcomputers, weather watchers networks, and field courses in teaching meteorology; and communicating meteorological knowledge in developing countries. Also provided is information about conference workshops and exhibitions, future prospects, and recommended courses of action to improve general weather literacy. (JN)

This short paper presents the identification of a metastable, isomeric-state decay in the neutron-rich odd-odd, prolate-deformed nucleus 166Tb. The nucleus of interest was formed using the in-flight fission of a 345MeV per nucleon 238U primary beam at the RIBF facility, RIKEN, Japan. Gamma-ray transitions decaying from the observed isomeric states in 166Tb were identified using the EURICA gamma-ray spectrometer, positioned at the final focus of the BigRIPS fragments separator. The current work identifies a single discrete gamma-ray transition of energy 119 keV which de-excites an isomeric state in 166Tb with a measured half-life of 3.5(4) μs. The multipolarity assignment for this transition is an electric dipole and is made on the basis internal conversion and decay lifetime arguments. Possible two quasi-particle Nilsson configurations for the initial and final states which are linked by this transition in 166Tb are made on the basis of comparison with Blocked BCS Nilsson calculations, with the predicted ground state configuration for this nucleus arising from the coupling of the ν1/2 - [521] and π 3/2 + [411] Nilsson orbitals. A method is presented for obtaining ground-state and isomeric lifetimes from storage-ring data. The method published by Schmidt . is extended to the problems and solutions associated with applying their et al 193 method to storage-ring data. These developed procedures are applied to real experimental data for 193Re, and a mean-lifetime value of 37+9-7 s is obtained. This is consistent with a previous measurement. [ABSTRACT FROM AUTHOR]

Neutron-rich 160,161,162Sm isotopes have been populated at the RIBF, RIKEN via β decay for the first time. β-coincident γ rays were observed in all three isotopes including γ rays from the isomeric decay of 160Sm and 162Sm. The isomers in 160Sm and 162Sm have previously been observed but have been populated via β decay for the first time. The isomeric state in 162Sm is assigned a 4- ν7/2+ [633] ⊗ν1/2- [521] configuration based on the decay pattern. The level schemes of 160Sm and 162Sm are presented. The ground states in the parent nuclei 160Pm and 162Pm are both assigned a 6- ν7/2+ [633] ⊗ π5/2- [532] configuration based on the population of states in the daughter nuclei. Blocked BCS calculations were performed to further investigate the spin-parities of the ground states in 160Pm, 161Pm, and 162Pm, and the isomeric state in 162Sm. [ABSTRACT FROM AUTHOR]

In the past years, we have made many theoretical investigations on multi-quasiparticle high-K isomeric states. A deformation-pairing-configuration self-consistent calculation has been developed by calculating a configuration-constrained multi-quasiparticle potential energy surface (PES). The specific single-particle orbits that define the high-K configuration are identified and tracked (adiabatically blocked) by calculating the average Nilsson numbers. The deformed Woods-Saxon potential was taken to give single-particle orbits. The configuration-constrained PES takes into account the shape polarization effect. Such calculations give good results on excitation energies, deformations and other structure information about multi-quasiparticle high-K isomeric states. High-K isomers exemplify the coexistence of individual-particle and collective motion in atomic nuclei. Here, the topic is briefly outlined, and some open questions are discussed. These include violations of the K quantum number; the high-spin limit to K isomerism; the fission stability of K isomers; possibilities for manipulation and control of K-isomer decay rates; and access to K isomers in neutron-rich nuclei. We study the effects of quadrupole-octupole deformations on the energy and magnetic properties of high-K isomeric states in even-even heavy and superheavy nuclei. The neutron two-quasiparticle (2qp) isomeric energies and magnetic dipole moments are calculated within a deformed shell model with the Bardeen-Cooper- Schrieffer (BCS) pairing interaction over a wide range of quadrupole and octupole deformations. We found that in most cases the magnetic moments exhibit a pronounced sensitivity to the octupole deformation, while the 2qp energies indicate regions of nuclei in which the presence of high-K isomeric states may be associated with the presence of octupole softness or even with octupole deformation. In the present work we also examine the influence of the BCS pairing strength on the energy of the blocked isomer configuration. We show that the formation of 2qp energy minima in the space of quadrupole-octupole and eventually higher multipolarity deformations is a subtle effect depending on nuclear pairing correlations. This contribution will report on the experimental work on the level structure of 168Dy. The experimental data have been taken as part of the EURICA decay spectroscopy campaign at RIBF, RIKEN in November 2014. In the experiment, a 238U primary beam is accelerated up to 345 MeV/u with an average intensity of 12 pnA. The nuclei of interest are produced by in-flight fission of 238U impinging on Be target with a thickness of 5 mm. The excited states of 168Dy have been populated through the decay from a newly identified isomeric state and via the β decay from 168Tb. In this contribution the low-excitation structural properties of the doubly mid-shell nucleus 170Dy are discussed, with a special empasis on the evolution of the ground state rotational band within the dysprosium isotopic chain. Recent results from an experiment with the EURICA setup at RIKEN are shown in the context of previous measurements at the PRISMA+CLARA as well as the PRISMA+AGATA setups at Laboratori Nazionali di Legnaro. This paper reports the findings from studies carried out to determine the effect of enzyme addition on the efficiency of anaerobic digestion process. Some commercially available enzymes were used to study their performance in enhancing the rate-limiting hydrolysis step during anaerobic treatment of distillery wastewater. Results show that the addition of enzymes can enhance the hydrolytic activities in anaerobic digestion process (which will bring about increase in biogas production), but the performance depends on the nature and sources of the waste being treated and the type and dosage of enzyme. The nuclear structure of neutron-rich N>=126 nuclei have been investigated following their production via relativistic projectile fragmentation of a E/A = 1 GeV 238U beam on a Be target. The cocktail of secondary beam products were separated and identified using the GSI FRagment Separator (FRS). The nuclei of interest were implanted in a high-granularity active stopper detector set-up consisting of 6 double sided silicon strip detectors. The associated gamma-ray transitions were detected with the RISING array, consisting of 15 Euroball cluster Ge-detectors. Time-correlated gamma decays from individually identified nuclear species have been recorded, allowing the clean identification of isomeric decays. [ABSTRACT FROM AUTHOR]

Fusion-fission reactions were induced by bombarding a thick 27Al target with 178Hf projectiles at a laboratory energy of 1150 MeV using the ATLAS accelerator at Argonne National Laboratory. The subsequent γ-ray decays were measured using the GAMMASPHERE germanium detector array. The beam was pulsed at two different ON/OFF cycles of 82.5/825 ns and 25/75 μs in order to observe the γ rays from the decay of isomeric states. In 121Sb 2721+Δ keV, Iπ=(25/2+) and 2434 keV, Iπ=19/2- states have measured half-lives of T1/2=200(30) μs and 8.2(2) ns respectively. The 2614+Δ keV, Iπ=(27/2+) and 2486 keV, Iπ=19/2+ states in 123Sb have measured half-lives of T1/2=52(3) μs and 7.9(4) ns respectively. The positive parity isomers in these nuclei correspond to a πd5/2 or πg7/2 configuration, in 121Sb and 123Sb respectively, coupled to aligned (h11/2)2 neutrons. The Iπ=19/2- isomeric state in 121Sb is proposed to have a νh11/2 x νd3/2 x πd5/2 configuration. A previously unobserved isomer has been identified in 99Mo at an energy of 3010 keV, decaying with T1/2=18(5) ns. This state is interpreted as an energetically favoured 3 quasi-particle alignment of ν (d5/2 g7/2) x π(g9/2)2 configuration which is observed systematically in the even-Z N=57 isotones. © 2006 American Institute of Physics [ABSTRACT FROM AUTHOR]

The population of metastable states produced in relativistic-energy fragmentation of a 238U beam has been measured. For states with high angular momentum, I=17h and I=21.5h, a higher population than expected has been observed, with the discrepancy increasing with angular momentum. By considering two sources for the angular momentum, related to single-particle and collective motions, a much improved description of the experimental results can be obtained. The utility of isomers for exploring the nuclear landscape is discussed, including their role in superheavy-element research, and the possibility of observing neutron radioactivity. Emphasis is given to K isomers in deformed nuclei. The context, programme and challenges of a Library "Service Excellence Campaign", are described and discussed. The campaign was initiated during 2004 at the University of the Witwatersrand, Johannesburg as part of a university-wide pilot programme. In the context of increasingly sophisticated library information services, systems and academic users, heavy demands are made on staff development in the workplace, and on managers and supervisors accountable for the quality of service delivery. The paper describes a workplace training programme developed on the basis of a customer service survey. One of the planned outcomes for the Library is a "Client Services Charter"; a senior staff workshop brainstormed core elements of this and several examples of Library Service Charters available on the Internet are given. These were selected for their references to staff performance and abilities, and the paper concludes by suggesting that incorporating these concepts into a service charter, as well as more arithmetic standards of service, should continually remind staff of their commitment to service excellence in the University Library. Deep-inelastic collisions of [sup 136]Xe ions with tantalum and tungsten targets have been used to study high-spin isomers in neutron-rich Aapprox. 180 nuclei at the GSI on-line mass separator. Gamma-rays associated with the decay of the well known K[sup π]=37/2[sup -], 51-minute isomer in [sup 177]Hf were observed, but with different half-life characteristics and an unexpectedly high yield. These features are interpreted as evidence for a hitherto unrecognized isomer in [sup 177]Lu. A two-component half-life analysis of the [sup 177]Hf γ-ray intensities gives a first component of 6[sub -2][sup +3] min, when the second component is fixed at 51 min. Comparison with multi-quasiparticle calculations suggests the possibility of a K[sup π]=39/2[sup -] isomer in [sup 177]Lu, which β-decays to the [sup 177]Hf isomer.
